Tekken Producer: "That Hollywood Movie Is Terrible"

Hollywood wrecking video games is nothing new. But it's about time that an annoyed game producer finally stood up and said something.

The "Tekken" movie didn't exactly enjoy widespread critical acclaim, and Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada was none too happy about it arriving on DVD and Blu-Ray in Japan this week. According to GameStop citing Harada's reply to a fan on his Twitter page, the game producer is clearly upset about the whole fiasco.

"That Hollywood movie is terrible. We were not able to supervise that movie. (It was [a] cruel contract.)"

Then, after another fan called the movie a "disaster" and begged Harada not to let it happen again, the producer made it plain that he had little to no control over the proceedings: "Please don't ask me about that movie," he wrote. "We did not have the supervision right. I don't want [to] talk about that." The idea for a film had been around since 2002 but after nothing happened for a while, it reemerged in 2007 with director Dwight Little heading the project. Little's credits include "Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid" and "Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home."

But obviously, the "Tekken" effort didn't work and this is an example of a game maker who watched helplessly as the film bombed. In the future, you can bet more designers are going to demand that they be very "hands-on" when Hollywood wants to mess with another game series.

Here's the thing, you make sure you retain creative control in the contract or you don't let the movie be made!

That said I kinda want to see it now just to see the women in those outfits. :)

With a resume like that, they should have known the director would only make worthless drivel. He says they didn't have any control, but you know they chose to agree to that contract which means they gave the studio the right to make the movie without their input.

Just goes to show you should always read every last word before you sign. Listen up devs, don't want your games destroyed on the silver screen, better not sign stupid contracts.

At this point, it should be painfully clear that any and all 2D/3D fighter games, should always be animated. Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, and even though the Tekken animated movie was kinda...strange (Dinosaurs...? Really?), it was still vastly better than what I've seen regarding the live-action move they're...regurgitating.

I always assumed it would be bad, but to it's credit, I kind of like how they really tried to properly represent the look of the characters and costumes. Some movies like to re-invent appearances. Even then, the whole thing looks cheaply produced.

I was very unimpressed with the costumes in both the decent Mortal Kombat and the terribly abysmal DOA. The girl who played Kasumi would have looked so good in the original threadbare outfit. (of course she would have needed implants)

Reading this reminded me that the Shadow of the Colossus movie is being written by the same guy who wrote The Legend of Chun-Li, and now I'm extremely depressed. Hollywood should just lay off completely, or hand over control to the people who made the games.

I heard that project got canned. And I was elated to hear it. Now... I must do more research to assure myself that this guaranteed travesty will never come to be.

An SOTC movie just shouldn't happen... ever! That game was such a unique and all together amazing experience. No one could ever capture it's essence in film. It's just a bad, bad, bad idea. Seriously, unless you can get someone like James Cameron or Peter Jackson to take on this project (which we all know won't happen) then I say just let it be.

@pandacastro and kraygen: Yeah, I first heard about the project about a year ago, I believe even from this site.

@gumbi: I never heard anything about it being canned, but I haven't heard any updates in a while either, so you may be right. I HOPE you're right, because, as you said, a project like that should be handled by the masters, or just left alone.

If the ladies in the picture are supposed to be examples of the 'babes' in the movie playing the babes in the game, I can only suppose that the casting director doesn't like pretty faces. If you're going to make a movie of an arcade game with cute babes fighting each other. You have no story to lean on, so the eye candy has to be AAA. To my eyes at least, this would appear be a further problem for this movie.

crappy movie means that the actresses in them MUST be hot. hell, i bought the legend of chunli dvd for one reason, kristin kreuk. i still havent watched the dvd because the actual movie scarred me. i mean how can you mispronounce shadaloo when it was written on screen as such. not to mention chris klein, he ruined a messed up movie. i dont know what possesed me and my friends to watch it after seeing all the reviews.

I saw it too and man, I never imagined it could be so bad. Luckily I only paid $1 to see it. Movie rental place going out of business. thank goodness, even tho it wasn't worth the $1, I'm glad I didn't pay more.

i really dont buy his excuse, i mean you created the series so you have a say on what goes in or out of a movie based on your creation!
its like sony doing a uncharted movie, and it sucks than ND say o sorry we did not have much control over that.
you created the series, so wherever it turns up its your responsibility to make sure its up to spec.
if i start up a company, and my employees do a shoddy job who gets the blame, them or me?
the fact of the matter is, its his idea, his creation so wherever it goes he is responsible for it.

though i have to admit, the new MK movie does not look to shabby at all!
cant wait for that, or the game im a little disappointed though its in 2D and the 3 combat systems are gone.
that was the best addition to MK ever! they are FOOLS to remove it!
mixing combos across 3 combat modes was so cool, i remember trying to do sparky almost sent me insane!

I was nearly in tears when i saw the trailer, Tekken had the potential to be so much more. If i were to do it i would start with a prologue wit ha fight scene between Heihachi and Kazuya on the cliff, then have the opening a live action replica of the T2 intro and then have the story revolve around the 2nd game. ending with the battle with the devil. Maybe when i become a famous movie director i will sort it out lol.

I hated how they just slapped all the battles into the cage like in in T4. Tekken is not UFC. i would have fight scenes in interesting locations and involve the Mishima empire.

I like the way they are toning it down slightly to go for a more realistic setting.

Well of course the movie was terrible, has he been living on another planet for the last 10 years? LOL.

I don't mind stuff like Red Faction having a SyFy Channel movie, because you know it's going to be low budget crap (but hopefully entertaining crap), and everybody can have a good laugh and it stirs up some publicity for the upcoming game. But actually expecting Hollywood, of all places, to make a "good" movie...good grief.

IMO...all fighting game movies suck period....what did u expect its a game with no cinematics and very unexplained storylines. Here...SCENE 1 - PAUL VS. LAW ROUND 1 FIGHT!, winner PAUL! SCENE 2 - PAUL VS ....well u get the idea. HOLLYWOOD picks the stupidest games to make a movie. I think they try to bad produce movies of games out of jealously.....
GAMES ARE RISING MOVIES ARE DROPPING....they see UNCHARTED and thats what hollywood dont want to be....lol uncharted..

Yeah. To be fair, though, many games worth making a movie off of don't end up getting movies due to smart dev's. A good example is Kojima's Metal Gear Solid. There were movie talks there, too, but he's unwilling to give up rights. And good thing too, imo!!

Good movies come from the devs who started the games. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is AMAZING on blu-ray. (Why they cut so much out of the DVD, I'll never know!! There's literally over a half hour more footage on blu-ray left out of the DVD that makes the movie MUCH MUCH MUCH clearer.)

I would be happy if they ever made a decent game-based movie. But for that to happen you would really need the producer and director directly involved with the developer and head artists of the game in question. Oh, and the script have a once over as well.

uh.... they used miguel, and dragonov. they were in dark ressurection.... no one knows who the fu** they are! and eddy and christie didn't seem to know each other, and christie didn't even do capoeira. jun died from jacks (which didn't look like jacks) rather than orge in tekken 3. it wasn't very well thought of at all.
