Newsflash: You Can't Stop GT5 From Being Amazing

You know, it isn't just Kotaku. I'm not even necessarily accusing them of being anti-anything (but if they're not, an immensely lazy and not-so-bright individual posted that screwed-up video as news). Either way, it's hardly the only source that has made vain attempts to throw Gran Turismo 5 under the bus.

It's not a new happenstance to see headlines from sources trying to be "different," that attack great - or soon-to-be-great - games. It's one of the downsides of Internet "journalism" that just won't go away; attention-getting headlines, regardless of the content of the article, nets big traffic. Therefore, writing something against the grain - i.e., "5 Reasons Why God of War III sucks," or some such nonsense - is very attractive. But at least in those cases, even in regards to titles that aren't available yet, there's some sort of attack on the game's merits; it's gameplay, graphics, presentation, story, or whatever. ...has anyone noticed that although it appears to be hip to hate on GT5 these days, none of the naysayers ever actually have anything to say? Besides, "it's going to suck because I say so"...?  Always a convincing and intelligent argument.

It's because, and I really hate to inform them, they have nothing to say. You can post all the doctored videos you want, or complain about the "only 200 Premium cars" issue, or this or that. It really won't matter. We all know very well that Polyphony will produce a fantastic game, and one that has a darn good chance of becoming the best racing simulator available. It's a guaranteed Game of the Year nominee and while we can't say it'll be the "best ever" until we play, and we know it absolutely must deliver due to all the hype, we can say it'll be amazing. We can say that because we know 2+2=4.   We can say that because the sun is hot. We can say it because every last human on earth who has played it says it's unbelievable. So complain, bi***, whine, and moan, all you want...ain't gonna change nothin'.  Sorry.

So save your collective attention-whoring breaths.

Pure, juuuuust pure!

And that really is the point; they're hating on a game they can't find a fault in.

So they try to use miscellaneous BS like the "OMG loading is slow" video to say the game is bad.

Bunch of immature, internet wanna-be journalists.

It's clear they can't back up any of the crap they come up with.

Gran Turismo fans are not of the immature kind. They'll easily HUG this game to death when it comes out.

Sure, I can already feel a drop in sales in the US, but Europe and Japan know and love real racing.

It'll be THE holiday game whether you're 10 years old or 50. The kind of game you can enjoy REGARDLESS of how you like to play racing games.

It's all about facts and appreciation for art and quality.

This site allows for logical and educative discussions/interactions.
It'd be impossible to do this in most game sites.

Tghat was the worst trhing about the otaku video incident-their community should have ripped them a new one for trying to mislead THEM their own readership! when they didn't I was stunned but if you stick with a site after what the fool Crecente did over his Home story that Sony wanted him to hold(seriously, worst journalistic choice EVER)what can you expect of them?

Thing is did they want to bash GT5 or was it just more of Crecente's editorial position to pick at Sony products(making Kinect GOE3 etc)because he still holds a grudge over the whole Home thing?

He's an immature tool and his site stinks and the fact remains that GT5 is a lot bigger than him, his site, it;'s community or pretty much any other console game going.

While i'm not a regular commenter here may I join in the backslapping as this is one of the most inclusive sites I visit in terms of community and openness.

God of War 3 is not without flaws, but it's definitely a pure epic experience. You can say the same every other games.

GT5P's flaws were the lack of tracks. Even with the flaws, it's still an above average game. GT5 has improvements among everything, it'll only be more fun than GT5P. A definite worthy purchase.

Man I wish people wouldn't be like that. It is definitely immature to try and find something wrong with a game, or anything for that matter, which in actuality has nothing majorly wrong with it.
It makes me think of fanboyism or something like that.

I know of another PS site that has at least one person that loves to sensationalize story titles and if you were to read them, the content doesn't even match the title. Also, they've got a couple other "writers" that have poor comprehension skills. Even if you supply them with proper proof. It's sickening. I like that site but I know which stories to stay away from.

I see people often criticize PSXExtreme for not printing the latest news rumor, and not having dozens of new stories each day. but you know, there is a thing called quality and a thing called quantity. It seems to me that some sites go for quantity, and ignore the quality. It's very refreshing to have a site that pursues quality over quantity.

That other site would, I am guessing, prefer quantity.

I am one of those in the club of having zero interest in GT5. Not to say in won't be a great looking game (of that I know it will, especially in 3d), but comparing driving a real car to driving in an imaginary car on a TV with zero sensations is like comparing watching porn to actually having a sex life. There's absolutely no substitute for the real thing. Hell, karting is infinitely beyond GT5.

That's what I have against it though and any driving game for that matter.

Having a 3DTV, I still have no interest in GT5, despite the fact I know it will look good... It cannot and will never compare to the real thing; even going to the convenient store to get a gallon of milk. Unless you're driving a power wheels barbie car, anything beats a driving game.

Personally, I see games like these as good for those who don't have a drivers license, but that's only my opinion based on the above. All of this a conclusion I came to while playing Forza 3.

As for those who claim it won't look good, I agree with most fans of the series they can eat dirt. It'll probably be the best looking driving game to date, and with 3D, it'll probably be jaw dropping.

Agree totally, but that could be similarly said for many, many genres beyond driving. Every sports game, for a start, and most shooters (although in the gaming world, shooters are much, much safer than the real thing ;)). I love playing real cricket, but I also enjoy the game version. I enjoy driving, but I also enjoy driving games. And even if I can drive, it's unlikely I'll be able to take a Camaro at 200kph around Laguna Seca in real life ;). I think GT5 has a _lot_ to contribute to people who have a drivers license as well as those that don't, just like you hear of F1 drivers playing F1 games in downtime. It's not for everyone, but that's like pretty much everything everywhere :).

As far as I know, it's impossible to recreate that in real life.

But hey, guess driving at 30MPH and stopping at every red light is better than Gran Turismo *shrug*

Why do people thumb down someone telling their honost opinion, and it's also the truth at best! It's like saying playing a sport in real life is better than playing sport in front of your full HD 2" TV with 7.1 Surround, 3D, and move, because nothing beats the real thing.

I think you just need to expand your definition of reality. When I was a boy I asked myself how Tidus and Yuna and Wander and Jak and Sly could touch my heart the way they did, especially if they weren't "real." But then, not every "real" thing can be experienced through every sense available to us. Our thoughts are not tangible but are considered real. To say the stories and characters and words and expression of every plot devised by humans were never real would also mean that my love for all the people in my life was not real. Both are intangible, and are born solely in the human brain.
I believe that we can all learn important lessons from the games and television shows and books that have been created. To say that they are not real is a convenient excuse to never explore the meaning of fictitious works and to understand them only at face value.

I'm with Scarecrow and NoSmokingBandit.

I'm not the biggest racing fan either, but come on... Like Scarecrow said, I'm pretty sure GT5 will be very much unlike anything I will experience in real life. I drive a 2004 Hyundai Accent 4-door sedan. If I'm feeling particularly dangerous, I can top it out at 135kph (In the 80's for MPH for my American friends!) but if I top that out, chances are my steering wheel will start to vibrate violently forcing me back down to a safe 120kph at best!

Now I have a decent career underway, and I could get a new car if I was driven to, but it doesn't make monetary sense right now... and even if I did, I guarantee it wouldn't be nearly as nice or as fast as pretty much every single car in that game.

Also, I'll never drive on any of those historical race tracks in real life ever. Even if I DID get a car to top out 200+, I'd be too scared of getting caught for speeding.

Anyways, @DeathofChaos, I think the reason people thumb him down isn't because he doesn't like racing games, it's because of the reasoning behind it. According to his reasoning, he probably wouldn't play a shooter because it's not the same experience as driving bullets into people and aliens in real life. It was just a strange post, is all. Nothing wrong with not being drawn to a particular genre.

You kinda sorta seem to have missed the point. Gran Turismo isn't about driving a battered old family car to walmart and back again. It's about taking a huge variety of cars from ordinary to extraordinary from sports to super, from rally to F1 onto tracks from around the world and racing. That's something I will never be able to do, ever. But thanks to GT I can. And just like every other game I play, the reason I play is for that escape into an alternate reality where I *can* do these things that I have no chance what so ever to do in real life.

GT gives near infinite replay value and total escape from reality for petrol-heads ad casual racers alike.

Of course, it may not be your kind of game, but to dismiss it on the basis that you have a driver's license and claim that GT is simply a substitute for those without a car or license is quite simply missing the point by a country mile.

Finally got around to ordering my Collector's Edition today. I don't care what sites say about 'flaws' or 'drawbacks' to the game because I've played the series since its PS1 release and so there's no doubt this installment will exceed my expectations once again.

As far as sites or articles criticizing the game, I disregard them because the game is not out yet. Even for a perfectionist like Yamauchi there may be some things that don't come out just right but these are very very minimal when looking at the product as a whole.

All I say is to let the numbers talk when the game releases, plain and simple.

Gran Tursimo 5 is going to be the worst driving game in history because I heard it doesn't have the rewind feature found in Forza 3. Yeah, that's right, I said it.

/sarcasm. Anyone who can decry or declaim on the pure goodness that will be GT5 seriously needs to have themselves checked for a medical condition. Unfortunately the condition will probably be either stupidity, which is far too prevalent to ever be wiped out, 360 bias, which suffers the same fate as stupidity, or blindness, which is unfortunate.

There is no other racing experience like Gran Turismo in its accuracy, and the only way that I can see the game improving is to bring it into an open world. Well, maybe not the series, but imagine an open world game employing the car numbers and physics systems of GT5. Midnight Club: Gran Turismo.

No, Gran Turismo 5 is going to be more than worthy of being a GOTY contender, and anyone who says otherwise can bite me because they're dead wrong.

The sad thing is, a lot of these so called journalists are so determined to get as many hits to the site as possible that they will do whatever it takes. It's a lack of integrity.

Instead of doing some research and reporting news, they would rather come up with the most outrageous headline they can think of in order to get hits. It ends up being all about the money.

It's sad that there are so many of these people who are willing to sell out so easily. I have a feeling that half of these GT5 haters don't have anything against it or sony, they simply want to get a lot of people to notice them.

Man, I love this site.

The one thing with Gran Turismo is it's longevity. Since the original Gran Turismo came out, competitors both console and PC alike have attempted to match and sometimes surpass the series.

Now I will admit that Forza has come close in several regards, the fact remains that neither the original or it's sequels represent the entire package. It's fans as a whole don't have a passion for it, and the sales numbers reflect it. It's that very passion that creates GT, and it's true fans recognize it, and can't get enough of it.

There is a reason the GT series has sold 55 million throughout the years.
There is a reason that each full game sells around 10 million lifetime.
There is a reason that GT5 Prologue sold around 4 million.

I could go on, but I think my point has been made. I remember Ben's article on why it has to be the best racing game ever. What Kotaku did was fine example that reinforces that very point. GT5 not only represents driving nirvana, it also becomes a serious threat to certain people.

November 2nd will roll around, and I'll be buying myself the CE and a regular copy for the kids (gotta start 'em young you know) and I wont be alone.

LOL thumb police. I like it.

I'm getting GT5 partially because of the aforementioned;

"Graphics? Check!
Sound? Check!
Car variety? Check!
Race variety? Check!
Past history of GT coming through like a galactic sized barrel of awesome sauce? Check!"

...but mostly because of the fizix.

I have no grudge against GTA and I believe it will be the greatest looking car based game out there, can't wait for GTA to hit that quality, but I still think it would be funny in an ironic kind of way for everyone to end up hating the game. I've been waiting for a long time for Versus and anticipate it more than any other game this generation, but if it turned out that a lot of people hated it, then it makes the game so much more of a gem in my book. Terrible games in the past are regarded as awesome and epic nowadays.

Bravo *gives a round of applause* I am right there with you Ben. I absolutely cannot wait for this game, it's been a long time coming. I can't believe the negativity brewing up about this game. I guess there will always be those who envy and then those that just know they are great ala GT5.

You article got me so hyped for this game. The wait is now killing me. :P

The sad part is, "real" journalism is no different. This is exactly like that whole Dan Rather mess, and that story was never retracted by CBS. CNN retracted a story once and in their reasons for going with it originally, even though the evidence was shaky at best, they listed the fact that their "journalists" felt so strongly about it - as if a person's agreement or disagreement with the content of a "story" should be an influencing factor in whether it's true or not. And if you care to watch a few interviews of these nationally known "journalists" you'll see example after example of them expressing their hatred for certain people or items they frequently report on and their undying devotion to other things.

Staying informed on what's actually happening in the world requires a highly tuned BS detector.

Journalism 20-30 years ago still suffered from some innate bias, but journalism was a serious profession both in print and the various other media. the vast majority of professional journalists did due diligence when writing their stories and reporting on events.

Today the crowd sourcing, you tube, social media, blogsphere mentality has begun to spread beyond non journalists. So many small online publications are written by people with no more experience writing professionally than I have. Citizen journalism, the empowerment of the common man to blast his words with the same perceived value as the words of professional journalists who have researched and checked their information. The amount of persona bias, disinformation and downright untruth that is published as 'fact' today is astounding. And we defend this by saying 'freedom of speech' and it's just an opinion. Fine, yes, an opinion, but the insane and biased bloggers are impossible to separate from real journalists when their words are equally available and equally respected. 20-30 years ago, the bloggers would have been writing for fanzines that were published out of basements and did not in any way compete with newspapers or any other legitimate news source. Things have changed - and not for the better.

Never played any of the previous Gran Turismo games. All I heard from other people is that the races are 200 laps long. Is that true? Because i'm not a big enough fan of racing to enjoy that.

...whoever told you that is a moron.

No, they're not 200 laps long. Most are a few laps like any other racing game. There were some endurance races that can go 200 laps (or more), but they're entirely optional and hardly comprise the vast majority of the game.

I tried doing one of the shorter endurance races once, just to do it. I was doing quite well, too, and was about 50 or 60 laps in when my stepdad cut the power to my room because he was working on the house.

I've never tried again.

There _are_ 200 lap races in GT, hell, there are races that're longer. They are in the 'Endurance Race' section, but they're all 24-hr Lemans Circuits, or ~1000KM races.

As Ben & Co. stated above they're actually in the vast minority. Most are 2-8 lap races, with Championships going upwards of 10-20.

Well said Ben. I completely agree and have been waiting for this game since I got my PS3. I haven't played a game in the series since the original as I left console gaming for the PC for a few years but that still stands as my favorite racer ever played by a wide margin. I believe it is the lowest form of journalism to attempt to aquire readership through sensationalist headlines to then not deliver on anything worth reading or a real arguement to back up said headline. It is the internet version of the Weekly World News or National Enquirer and are worth nothing more than something to line one's virtual bird cage with.

Nice rant Ben, You always rant very well, articulate, and thoughtful, yet maintaining the momentum.

I do think that this is another example of the Eye of Moron, although I believe I sense a disturbance in the fabric of the Moron, an external influence is shaping the Eye's opinion...

I'm thinking that it's misplaced loyalty to a specific brand that is making many internet 'journalists' who would formerly known simply as bloggers of forum contributors react negatively to positive news for another brand. That and a smattering of paid blogging and commenting (aka astroturfing) with a specific aim of sowing negative spin for GT5 and other PS titles. Gee, who could be behind that?

Here's three things the bots are gonna say:
1) If GT5 get lower average score than Forza 3 than the bots will go, "All those time and money spent on a piece of crap"

2) If GT5 get higher score than Forza 3 than they'll go," Of course it's gonna be better, $60 million and 5 years was spent making this"

3) Ignorant bots? "GT5 is trash no matter what"

Sadly, I just think GT5 will get lower score than Forza 3 because of all the biased websites. UC2 did get 96% so there's still hope.

But the score don't matter, all I know is that we're in for a treat with "Gran Turismo 5".

I just think these tools are angry because their predictions that the PS3 would fail and all it's exclusives would come to Xbox is obviously not coming true.

They so want our exclusives but are too panzy to man up and buy a PS3 because they have spent most of this generation bad mouthing the best console on the market. Now they are eating their words.

My ONLY gripe... Well ok, two. Is interior for premium cars only? Realisticly, as playing around with 3d modeling myself, I know that disc space and time constraints wouldn't allow 1000+ masterpieces to exist... So, I can see that standpoint. I want a Ford Probe in this game. I own one. I love driving it. Its a great car in my opinion, and I have yet to see one in a racing game... Anyone remember GT:TT demo? I loved that. I had FUN playing that. I want more. I cannot wait for November 2nd. First day no doubt purchase for me.

I do have a question.. What kind of customization and performance can we do? Anyone know or any rumors floating?
