Red Faction: Battlegrounds To Focus On Multiplayer Intensity

THQ and Volition are working very hard to expand the Red Faction universe; we know about Armageddon, the next full installment, and a new sci-fi film based on the franchise.

And now, yet another title appears on the horizon: Red Faction: Battlegrounds, a downloadable multiplayer-oriented effort destined for the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. As announced at GamesCom this week, Battlegrounds will be the very first downloadable entry in the series, and it'll focus on fast-paced, nonstop action. Featuring mechs, tanks, rovers and other types of vehicles and machines, you will "wreak havoc above ground and beneath the surface of Mars." In keeping with that patented RF flair, just about everything you see can - and probably will - be destroyed, so saddle up for a rock 'em, sock 'em experience.

Four players will compete against one another either locally or online in a variety of game modes, including Survival, Annihilate and Flag Frenzy. You will rank up and gain rewards as you go, so there's always incentive to perform well. The only caveat is that GamesCom is a European conference, the game is being developed by THQ Digital Studios UK, and it was reported at a UK source. Therefore, this may only be available in Europe when it arrives, but we're hoping otherwise.

Either way, Red Faction: Battlegrounds is scheduled to drop some time next year.

Kodos to THQ for switching it up and putting out games ppl want to buy. All while not stepping on developers toes and putting out new IPs.

Still have to get into Guerilla. If the online is good there then maybe I'll have a look at this.

The first one was definitely the best. But Guerilla was good. Not great, but definitely a good game.

As far as my interest in RF:Battlegrounds goes, nope, none at all.

But all the others in the series so far, Yup!
(already own RF 1 & 2).

This looks like the sort of thing that people who like this sort of thing will like. I, however, do not. Get yourself an honest to goodness new IP THQ.

So it's MP only and yet, it's only 4 players? Sounds like weak tea to me.

Only red faction I've played was guerrilla and I didn't care for it, so a 4 player MP version doesn't sound at all appealing.

So once Red Faction sells enough we'll get some new IPs right, THQ?

Just curious... does anyone know what "THQ" stands for?

sigh.
another MP only game!
why?
when will developers learn not everyone has unlimited download usages?
another one to add to the skip list.

I'm sorry but that trailer looks weak as sh.. That's the best they could do. It looks like a top down arcade kiddie game. After seeing the trailer I'm not even remotely interested. I can think of better things I could waste money on.

Can you dig tunnels like the first one? Dig tunnels and then use guided rockets or the rail gun.
