World Of Mass Effect Will Finally Grace The PlayStation 3
We swear we can't predict the future. We're not oracles. ...it just seems that way.
Less than 48 hours after it was determined that PSXE readers most want Mass Effect 2 - of all the top-notch games not available on the PlayStation 3 - it has been announced that a PS3 version of the excellent RPG is headed our way. Freshly revealed at GamesCom this morning, EA and BioWare have announced that Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 will arrive in January, and it'll feature "hours of bonus content." We don't have all the full details just yet but we figured you guys would want to know ASAP, right? According to some sources, ME2 is the single best-rated game in the 28-year history of Electronic Arts (validation for acquiring BioWare) and of course, we all know that EA simply doesn't do exclusivity. They just can't make enough money this way so perhaps such a move was inevitable.
You can also consider this to be pre-confirmation of Mass Effect 3 on PS3, as it's exceedingly unlikely BioWare will somehow magically revert to Xbox 360 exclusivity, even if it's only timed. No, ME appears to be a multiplatform series, now. Sony lost a few big exclusives at the start of this generation, too, and in general, third-party exclusivity really is a thing of the past. However, now that Microsoft has lost ME...they just have Gears and Halo, right? I mean, that's all that's left to compete against MGS4, GoWIII, GT5, LBP, Heavy Rain, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, inFamous, Killzone.....? Well...all right.

Oh, and for what it's worth -- ME2 is WAY better than ME1. In pretty much every way.

By the way, Ben, the 360 still has Splinter Cell conviction, Alan wake, Forza, Limbo and fable. These are all great games. However, I do agree that they can't compare to LBP, MGS4, Killzone, Motorstorm, GT5, Resistance, Heavy Rain, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, GOW3, and Infamous. Just wanted to point out that it's not just Halo and Gears....

Also I think Ben was just thinking of their biggest exclusives. The ones people buy the console for. No one bought a 360 just to play those additional games you mentioned. They aren't system seller unlike most of the PS3 exclusives Ben mentioned.

Not sure why your post got down voted, its just an opinion people and one that I personally agree with. Fable is a lousy game, poorly made, full of bugs and home to some of the worst combat and voice acting I have ever been exposed to (outside of free theater groups). Again thats just my opinion.

For the record, I love the Splinter Cell series but I really think Conviction was a step backwards for the sake of multiplayer. I also liked Fable, but I never got around to playing Fable 2. As for Forza...GT5 will rape it and then it won't matter.

As for Fable, I think Fable is one of the 360's gems, While it didn't follow what it initially promised in giving us an RPG where what you do changes the quest, it was still a fun adventure in a fleshed out world. I myself am looking forward to the 3rd game.

So i guess the answer is no. Its mostly a shooter console. FPS/TPS is my least favorite genre, so when i do play them i want to play the best ones and those are on the PS3. Besides shooters, what do they have? Fable and Forza. i grew up with Gran Turismo and Forza doesn't compare. Fable, i never liked games like Fable and i find Fable in particular, especially bad.
Read Bandit King's comments for why. He summed it up nicely.

On the other hand, my woman loves the Fable series. She's finished both 1 & 2 and is excited for 3 - I think. With FFXIV around the corner I doubt she'll find time for Fable 3, though.

I think Sony has done a good job this gen at successfully launching several Sony owned and controlled franchises that won't just pop up on other systems without their say.

IMO: frame-rate > tearing
Simply because frame-rate problems can really be felt in the controls. Tearing is more of a annoyance, but it doesn't really generate more input lag.

ME1 was partially funded by Microsoft and published by Microsoft Game Studio on the 360. They are probably holding the publishing rights to it with a death grip. I doubt we will see that one just because of that. I do however think that EA will pack in some sort of back story missions at the beginning.

I don't remember so much screen-tearing issues (though there was some), as much as clipping, slow down, screen freezing, and save-file corruption which happened quite regularly. Despite that, the game is still very good for the story line, character/plot scenarios, exploration, and fairly good action. I might even get it again (despite having played it twice), considering I sold my 360, the games, and the original harddrive with the game-save data (that will be used in ME3 just as ME1's carried over to ME2). ME was the only franchise that I was missing a little, as I thought of keeping my 360 just for ME3 (and not even for Gears3, as after Gears2, I had enough of the game as the story was tacked on, and the action was still as sludgy as ever). I mean the action in Gears is pretty much the same as in ME's, with the cover-shooter mechanic, but without the rpg elements, squad commands, and exploration. But in ME, at least the story has a lot more depth, way more characters, each having much more development. Basically, the only thing Gears had over ME was graphics, but not by a huge margin. Overall, imo, ME2 is clearly a better game than Gears 2 (though I haven't played ME1). I haven't played DA:Origins, but I'm imagining it's a similar experience.

As for frame rate and tearing, I'd rather have no tearing and a small dip in frame rate. Screen tearing gives me a headache and makes me queezy.

I'm not sure if I'd recommend it as a must-buy. As I mentioned in my response to Jawknee, the game is rife with glitches and knicks. Moreover, the planets and areas, despite the number of them and the different settings, do appear a bit generic, and lack the clever level-design of a game like Demon's Souls. However, despite the lack of polish, the game does have a lot of content (especially when considering how much DLC has been released for it). It has a story that is quite moving at times, despite the cheese, and the ability to customize and see different scenarios through is bewildering.
One improvement I'm hoping on is better quality video, thanks to Bluray. The cruddy compressed video of the original cost the original game precious presentation points.

Civilization
Sim City
Ok, I stand corrected, that's two games. To be honest I don't think I'd even buy either of them any more, Civ 4 was a disappointment compared to Civ 3 for me, the game has become to big and sprawly and I just don't get the same 'game' feel I got from Civ1 or Civ 2. SimCity has simply become too complex. I enjoy building my city and all that, but don't like to have to worry about a realistic world economic model and it's effects on my city.
Even if I were to build a brand new PC tomorrow with decent graphics, I would still game on the console only, the PC just isn't a gaming device to me.

It's pretty impressive though, because I was planning on buying the game so I could throw the disc, frisbee-like, at my brother and hopefully sever a limb. How did you know I'd use this against a 360 owner?

However, without the first game, it's once again as I just said... It's like being neutered, except more like castration in this case... So... LOL at PS3 owners since they're getting handed a glass of milk, but no cookies.
ME2 without ME is worthless. This is a point at laugh at PS3 owners without the first game. Seriously... It is. Heck, most of the second game won't make sense without the first game. I'm happy for the PS3 owners without an xbox that get a chance to experience Mass Effect 2, but I'm laughing myself into tears because it's nothing without the original, and I'm sure BioWare knows it, but who cares if you can milk the cow. More money for them.

But, again the point of contention being not having ME1 might be a moot point in the end as like you said Bioware is fully aware that ME2 relies heavily on ME1 and I am sure they will find some way to catch gamers up. Maybe it is in those hours of bonus content.

You know what is being neutered? Having a 360 RROD for the 2nd or 3rd time, and having to buy another one.
Seriously, I had a 360, did not play ME1, but played ME2, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The back story was explained well enough (Shepard's rise into power in the Alliance against the Geth and after the attack on the Citadel). Even the older characters were reintroduced, allowing you enough time for them to grow on you.
So, no. Though I have sold my 360, I honestly and sincerely can say I miss nothing, especially after this news.
Because of Uncharted 2, GT5, Wipeout HD/Fury, Demon's Souls, Killzone 2&3, Resistance 1-3, R&C, inFamous 1&2, LBP 1&2, MotorStorms 1-3, everything else is neutered.

@ Sonic1899, I actually agree with that in concern to Devil May Cry 4 to a degree, and I hardly know enough about Rising, but more likely to completely agree with Rising. After having played DMC4 as it was my first DMC game, I went and bought the first 3 so I knew who all those characters were. In the case of DMC4 it's surrounds a completely new main character and all, so it gets away with it. Rising was intended as a standalone MGS game for Raiden. If MGS4 went to the xbox360, it would be senseless. There are endless connections to the previous 3 games that without them, MGS4 is only 1/2 of a game.
@ Shams I've had 2 RRoDs as well. The xbox as physical hardware is s*** in comparison to the PS3, it's not hard to figure that out. LOL
In terms of software, both have alot to offer. On a note, the comment was more or less a poke at Ben who once before said himself any real gamer would have both systems (PS3 and 360).
@ Oxvial, for the record I have an 80gb pS3, paid $600 and bought it months before my 360. It's hooked up via HDMI and I have a 3DTV to enjoy all the new benefits of it. A benefit that has yet to really grace the 360. Jealous about ME2 going to the PS3? Why would I be? I have a PS3, 360, and a Wii. Exclusives are of no concern to me. I played through ME1 and ME2. I've played through the MSG games on my Sony systems. Infact MGS4 happens to be my favorite game of all time, and if you note above, I think it would be stupid to put it on the 360.

Besides, you can't tell the difference between bluray movies and DVDs. No disrespect because I do like you. it's hard to take you seriously on graphical fidelity since you think bluray makes little difference. If you can't see how bluray movies greatly enhance the fidelity how can you spot the minimal differences in bioshock, ps3 vs 360?

As if have said before, Yes Blu-rays are better, but not as big of an act that it is being marketed for. DVD's still look great upscaled by the PS3 on a HDTV, hence why i am in no hurry to convert 600+ movies. When in 5 years time there will be a new format.
As for Bioshock the image generally looks softer than the 360 version due to it being a port. Just like Resident Evil 4 when it was put on the PS2.

A quote from Digital Foundry who has done some research in comparison of AA between the 360 and PS3:
"It's often the case that the Xbox 360 version of a game features edge-smoothing, while the PlayStation 3 counterpart will either leave it off altogether, scale it back, or use an NVIDIA specific technique called "quincunx", which refines edges nicely, but blurs the entire texture in the process."
Highlander may be able to explain better.

That said;
Don't blame the hardware for poor quality software, blame the developer or publisher.

Check out either the Digital Foundry or the Lens of Truth to see the comparison.
The analysis is pretty telling.
Here's a summary quote from DF.
"In terms of purchasing decisions for those who own both HD consoles, it's fairly self-evident that the Xbox 360 version of BioShock 2 is the one to have: graphics are undoubtedly superior with four times the resolution on transparencies, the frame-rate is undoubtedly smoother, there's no HDD-sapping mandatory installation and control varies from slightly crisper to considerably more responsive, depending on the status of the PS3's frame-rate at any given point.
This is not to say that the PS3 version of the game shouldn't be considered if you don't own an Xbox 360. The quality of the conversion is measurably better than the original BioShock, and while frame-rate drops can be irritating - coming when you really need the visual and controller feedback the most - it's still eminently playable and enjoyable.
The low-quality, quarter-resolution transparencies are the biggest issue here, since water and neon-bloom are so integral to the visual make-up of Rapture. In that respect, the impact to visual quality in what is such a beautifully designed world is somewhat disappointing, but won't detract too much from the overall gameplay experience."
***
Truth be told.
The technical argument that could be made for PS3 would be that there is no screen-tearing, but at the expense of a much less stable frame-rate. I choose tear, cause my play needs to be smooth =)

Everyone's different, I know, but I just can't understand how screen tearing is less distracting than frame-rate drops. I've been seeing games slow down since the 8-bit NES days. Honestly, I don't think I ever recall screen tearing being an issue on consoles until Microsoft entered the arena (aside from PC gaming). Although, I'm sure there was.
Point being, I've dealt with frame-rate drops for a much longer time than most posters here have been alive (if you are older than 28, then you don't count). I'm used to it. I suppose if you were a PC gamer for a long time then you'll be used to the tearing.
There were high percentage of games with screen tearing on the 360 and PS3 in first couple years of their existence. Experienced PS3 developers seem to have almost eliminated screen tearing.
I haven't purchased a 360 game in a very, very long time. It's interesting that you point out that an experienced 360 developer is still struggling with screen tearing on the 360.

They can't bring ME1 over to PS3 for reasons mentioned above but they can include a recap video and added options to choose key decisions of ME1.
BW know what they're doing, but that's the most reasonable way to release ME2 on PS3.
Played it on PC btw, and it rocks. One of the best action RPGs this generation. And I'm always amazed about all the stellar voice actors BW choose for their games.

I'm not trying to start an argument in favour of the 360, I don't even have one. I know the PS3 lineup is bigger, better and has more variety. But let's not spread a fallacy that the 360 only has a couple of good games that aren't on the PS3.

Fable is much more appealing (as an adult) imo over LBP, which for what it is, is rather incredible, it's plays like a childrens game (and looks like one, sounds like one). Fable 2 though was great, and definately a system seller I think.
Forza is the xbox answer to GranTurismo... That was sheer neglect on Ben's part...
As for Alan Wake, it's one of the few games I want that I just haven't picked up yet. Waiting for an amazon deal of the day on it as I do with most games since October last year.
Keep in mind PSXE is a PS3 only site and caters to PS3 owners. It doesn't have to put any positive spin on the xbox or the games for it.

Halo has a lot or popularity, but the franchise is seeing a decline. Look at the downhill slope the series has been on.
*Halo Wars: I'm sorry but RTS and consoles haven't mixed well.
*Halo ODST: This was a serious blow to the series credibility. The game was poor. Short, bland story, dated engine, over-priced and another attempt at MS trying to milk their property. I do enjoy the core tactics of Halo's play, but that is all that I could value from ODST.
*Bungie: They're leaving. The team who gave birth to the series, their baby, are leaving it behind. They know they've already done what can be done with the series. Some games and franchises just need to end and MS won't let it go (and they shouldn't there's still millions of fans, but it's populace is on a decline) Experimental efforts will be the best they can hope to do while other FPS competitors slowly chip away from it's user-base. Halo has had it's time in the sun, and it carried MS's platform and propelled MS's LIVE service for years. It was a legendary era in video-game history.
MS needs a new horse, and for my interests sake, please don't make it Kinect.
I don't mind supporting multiple platforms to have a shot at all the greatest games, but Kinetic is receiving a tremendous amount of emphasis by MS. It's nearly all they're focused on. If they're not careful, they may drive away a sizable portion of their audience to chase down their hope for greener pastures..

I'm not saying LBP isn't a system seller, but the game itself "to me" comes off as a childrens game. However, I cannot and will not deny that the creation tools within LBP are a completely different story. Despite my lack of care for LBP, I bought it for my kids, and I have seen what people can do with it, and it's amazing. Seeing the trailers for LBP2 makes it even more impressive. Just because I personally don't like LBP, doesn't mean I don't understand it or can't appreciate it.
As for Fable 2, it has some rather bothersome flaws, such as people in town crowd around you and make moving sometimes near impossible, but as a whole, it's a really fun experience I think, as do many. There are also people who think it sucks, that's fine.
Both are system sellers.
I am willing to admit that GT5 (especially seeing as how it will be in 3D) is a possible system seller and Forza likely isn't. However they each have a unique place for the system as their primary exclusive driving sim game, so it can't really be ignored.

true they are completely different games, but both drive the system for sales and advertising. They are part of a group of games for their respective console that is part of what makes it what it is. Never meant to imply they were a similiar genre, but reading what I wrote, I can see how that could be seen. My mistake on that. Note to my above comment as well on LBP, as I mean no disrespect to the game or the creation tools.

Know the difference between fans and fanboys, please. According to you, PS3 fans aren't allowed to be happy about this.

This way, they get around the licensing issue, and still be able to give the players as much of ME1 as they are allowed to.
So, the extra development time will probably focus on that extra content and optimization.
Otherwise, they could've just straight-ported to PS3, and have it out by this November...

I really hope that when the PS3 owners buy the game, they get access to all the DLC that has already released for the 360 owners, as that would be a really smart on Bioware's part (and the gamer's, because who would want to pay upwards of $30-40 for 1 year plus old DLC?).
And for those wondering why ME1 isn't in the picture, I'm not sure why myself, as both the games could easily fit on a 50GB Blu-ray disc, including ME1 and ME2 DLC. Additionally, since PS3 owners get to only play ME2, choices related to ME1 will have alreafy been made for them (important ones at that). So, there won't be any confusion as to the story and characters and whatnot.
As for the last part of the article, we all know Ben, we all know =P

Overall image quality is pristine (1920x1200, max details) but all cut scenes are heavily compressed bink-videos.
It kinda felt like the GOW collection on PS3, just not as extreme.
Should BW actually utilize the extra space to use real time cut-scenes then I'm buying ME2 for PS3 again. Otherwise the extras will have to be awesome to convince me.

Hopefully some of the extra content will be back stories to M1 & M2.
Now, if there's some technical way to incorporate your old M1 M2 saves into our own version of M3, that would be the icing on the cake.
BTW, AND...score another one for us....
Insominac just sent me a email stating that both, "Resistance 3" is on the way, and we're also going to be getting Ratchet & "Clank:4 for One" too.....
Here's the email....
worst. secret. ever.
resistance 3 revealed
The date we’ve been all been waiting for quite some time now has finally come. Yes, we are very aware of the fact that some games are just too hard to keep a secret; however, it’s our pleasure to finally put some rumors to rest. Today, we would like to OFFICIALLY announce our latest title currently in development – Resistance 3.
Since the release of Resistance 2, we’ve listened to your feedback to help fine-tune what we know will become a respected addition to the franchise. Our Burbank studio has done a phenomenal job of crafting a cruel and brutal Resistance 3 world. You can catch a glimpse of it by watching the live-action Resistance 3 teaser trailer shown during the PlayStation Press Conference at GamesCom today. Follow @insomniacgames on Twitter and you'll be the first to know when we've uploaded it for you to watch and share with all your friends.
We are very excited to show you more about Resistance 3. Remember to tell your friends to sign up for the newsletter, we’ll be offering swag and exclusive info throughout the coming year. In fact, you can visit our Community section and download some wallpapers right now.
4p ratchet & clank co-op
insomniac nc's first title
Wait, that wasn’t enough? You want to know what else we're working on? What our North Carolina studio has been wrenching? Believe it or not, we’ve been hard at work on an all-new, out-of-this world adventure, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One. Check out the trailer here!
Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One is a four-player co-opexperience with huge cinematic-quality battles and tons of cooperative gameplay. While Dr.Nefarious and Captain Qwark are no strangers to the Ratchet & Clank franchise, in All 4 One, you will be able to play as them alongside both Ratchet and Clank. If that wasn’t enough, there will also be an online drop-in, drop-out feature, so you can play together side-by-side or online with up to three other friends. We’ll be revealing some exclusive Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One content soon, but only for newsletter subscribers. In the meantime, you can download some cool wallpapers from our Community section. We hope you encourage some of your fellow Ratchet & Clank fanatics to sign up for the newsletter so they can enjoy the same content.
What’s next for Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One? We will be in Seattle for PAX 2010 (Sept 3-5) with a live panel, but if you can’t make it out, there’s alwaysFacebook and Twitter for our breaking news.
And as always, keep your eyes peeled on: www.insomniacgames.com.

Yeah, they could just move some stuff around, alter a few things, give it a game subtitle and call it good.
At the least, I'm sure they'll include content that details the main events from the first game. That way people don't feel out of the loop when buying into it. It's too bad many won't get to witness the cool standoff between Wrex and Shepard.

Sure, it's a lot of work, but BW got all the resources necessary, plenty of time and enough disc space.
I can't wait to see how they wrap this up.

if it gets move support i might get it, id be a really cool game to play with it.
otherwise ill pass.
