Portal 2 Opens For Entry In February

We still find it hard to believe that Valve boss Gabe Newell stood there on Sony's stage at E3 and said the PlayStation 3 would be getting the best version of Portal 2. But it happened. And it ain't that far off.

The developer confirmed to GameSpot that the highly anticipated EA offering had landed an official release date: February 9, 2011. It will release simultaneously on the PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Mac; it's a highly anticipated sequel that should be one of the first leading titles for next year. The original had players adopt the role of a human lab rat, Chell, who was able to utilize a special portal gun to create alternate routes to freedom. Along the way, you had to deal with seriously difficult tests posed by the insanely sadistic artificial intelligence known as GLaDOS. The concept was both original and engrossing, so we're expecting yet another step in the creative/innovative direction when Portal 2 hits store shelves. The only downside to this release date is that February also sees the launch of Killzone 3, although it won't be until later in the month. And hey, KZ3 isn't anything like Valve's effort; don't think the first-person view puts these two in the exact same category.

So what's next, Valve? Gonna announce Left 4 Dead 3 for the PS3? Come on, you may as well.

I thought he said it was going to be the best console version, seeing as the PS3's more open method of development would allow them to use Steamcloud for easier updates. I imagine the PC version will still probably be the best, but I'll be getting it on PS3, just because I can.

Never thought I'd be saying that last part.

Yep, Steam will allow Valve to easily update Portal 2 with fixes and free DLC and allow for easy access to Source mods for the game, if there are any.

Free DLC and mods are two things M$ft won't allow, and those are two things Valve likes to provide its community.

Yeah the first one was something totally new that had me completely hooked. The puzzles were sometimes difficult but not overly so, and the end was quite satisfying as well.
Hopefully this will be as good if not better than the first one

If the Resistance 3 co-op campaign copies L4D--as implied in the GamesCom trailer--I have no desire for Valve's game.

That would be strange if it did work that way, I took the trailer as just a creative way of showing that the game is coming, not a direct implication of how the multiplayer will work.

When I saw a group of armed civilians attacked by the Chimera, L4D was the first thing that came to mind. I'm really hoping I'm right because that kind of gameplay in the trademark atmosphere of Resistance would be fantastic. Remember that necklace with the teeth on it? (it shows up at 0:46) Those could be Chimera teeth...

556pineapple,
Valve said that they didn't know anything about the PS3 architecture, so they were bringing guys in who have worked on the PS3 for over 3 years.

So basically, the PS3 is supposed to have it's own team dedicated to making Portal for it.

But we shall see

Yeah, I'm glad they're bringing in a dedicated team for the PS3, it shows some real initiative on their part, especially after the lousy port of the Orange Box. But Gabe said in his speech at E3 that Portal for the PS3 would be "the best version on any console." (It sounded like a sly dig at Microsoft's limitations on the Xbox to me.) He didn't say overall, and because Valve is first and foremost a PC developer I figure that the PC one will still run the best. However, I could be wrong, and the PS3 version could be the best overall. Only time will tell.

I might get this game if They fix the load times. They were one of the worst parts of the game. If you die it takes forever for it to reload and it doesn't get shorter if it happens at the same spot. Anyways if they fix it I might pick it up a few months after launch, maybe in June.

Yeah, they really need to update there engine. L4D 2 has the same painfully long load time and it came out years later.

As cheap as gamestop is they would make you jump through portals first.

I have never played the first portal on any system and from what I've seen it doesn't really make me all that excited to play the second one.

However I'm always in support of any anti-ps3 people waking up and smelling the coffee. Who knows maybe eventually valve will make something I really like and I'll be able to play it on ps3.

Portal 2 should be a lot of fun. I'm starting to see a glimpse of PS3 domination here.

The cake is a LIE!!!! Too extreme?

Eh, whatever. I just want to know that the first will be bundled in with it. I have a bit of an obsession with getting the entire collection when it comes to series and I really, REALLY don't want to buy The Orange Box again. But, that will depend on how much time and money I have next year. I may be a bit too busy for Portal 2 what with the whole bunch of exclusives rolling down the line.
Peace.

It looks like a somewhat interesting game, but it's barely on the radar when Dead Space 2 and Deus Ex are coming out at around the same time.

I love Portal, but I also loved that it was bundled in the Orange Box when I got it. So it was 5 games for $60. I just don't know about spending $60 just for Portal 2.

I know it will be amazing....but $60-worth of amazing? I just don't know yet.

I read that the reason that Portal was so short was that it was basically an experiment. Since the experiment fared (very) well, Portal 2 is supposed to be much longer. I also read that it will have more tools to help you solve the puzzles, such as a rubber paint that lets you bounce off of surfaces. It also boasts an entirely new multiplayer campaign, different from the main one, in which the two players rely on each other to make it through the levels. I wouldn't pay $60 for the first one, but it sounds like a fair price for this one.
