Woah...Castlevania Is Like, Shadow Of The Colossus 2

We've seen plenty of gameplay footage for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, but the latest, taken by Ripten, almost made me shriek like a little girl. ...I said "almost," damnit.

Most anyone who owned a PS2 and could appreciate a certain amount of artistic impression and originality likely adored Shadow of the Colossus. In the game, you had control over what appeared (and felt) like a regular dude, who had to clamber around on these giant titanic bosses, utilizing stamina and strategy to locate the weak spots. Sometimes, the mammoth creature would try to shake you off and you had to hold on tight, remember? Yes? Then watch this:

See? There are even sensitive spots, times when the Goliath will actually attempt to grab you, and the only thing missing is the Stamina meter when attempting to hang on. I've always dreamed of a sequel to SotC but now I'm not so sure I need it. It's right here. Of course, we don't want you to get the wrong idea; there will be platforming, puzzles, and plenty of hack 'n slash combat ala God of War and Dante's Inferno; it won't all be about tackling Titans. In fact, there are probably only a few.

But still, the influence is obvious and we are not complaining.  By the way, we're also pretty sure Halford's bad-ass vocals in this video aren't actually in the game, as we heard no sound effects coming through the track.  Unless of course, they just enhanced the music...it fits, certainly.

That's pretty cool. I thought It was going to be like the other Castlevanias. (that's not a bad thing) But I wonder what kind of light will shine on It, Negative or good? Looks Interesting. The music was fitting as well for It.

I have a confession to make... I bought Shadow of the colossus way back when, and I did appreciate the artistic impression, however I was unable to defeat even the first boss! I had no idea how to get on the boss and tried for hours. I was disappointed and frustrated because it seemed like my type of game. Maybe ill try again when this comes out :)

that was difficult to say btw

Just let me say when my friend showed me SotC for the first time, I wasn't all that interested. But I after I played and finished Ico, something changed inside me... I love SotC and I played and I played and I beat every bosses at every level and I even make my way to the top of the garden. It was amazing.

Don't feel bad, some of the bosses take some time to figure out the weak point to. But the satisfaction gained from finally finding that weak point by yourself and bringing it down single-handedly....

Words can't describe the satisfaction and beauty of watching a colossi fall!!!

BTW, it took me over 2 hours to defeat the final boss. That thing was freaking insane!!!!
But my patience and perseverence were well rewarded. Gotta love Shadow of the Colossus.

Also Chaos Theory X, feel free to check out FAQs or Youtube videos if you really don't know how to defeat it or even get on it.
Try looking for bushy or furry patches around their feet, or a ledge behind their leg you can ride your horse towards and leap onto.

Speaking of horses, SotC had the best horse controls of any game, until Red Dead Redemption came out.

.... still waiting Team ICO. Last Guardian and ICO/SotC Collection on PS3 had better be worth the wait!!!!

@Chaos

You have to get behind it, get on the left leg, stab him there one or two times, then continue climbing to the lower back, you recover stamina there.
Then climb up through the back of it all the way to the head, and right at the center of it, stab him twice, and you got him.

I'm actually playing it again so do tell if you need any help with it.

Eh, I see what you're getting at, but I just don't feel it. I mean yeah it's essentially the same thing, but it in no way has the artist feel of SoTC, everything in that game was created for those battles, honestly it just looks like something they added into the game just to have more than make it amazing like, also wish we could have got to hear the actual game's audio, instead of music.

Agreed.

SotC wasn't just about defeating collosi. It was about immersing yourself in a desolate world mostly empty of life, with just you, a horse and your sword.

This doesn't have the same artistic flair of SotC. Team ICO created a beautiful masterpiece that was better to experience, not just play.

SotC was all about creating a feeling of emptiness and loneliness, making the Colossus battle that much more satisfying when you reached them. AND the slow movement, grip metre, graphics (for the PS2) and lateral thinking that went into defeating each one made for the best gaming experience on the PS2.

I'm only referring to the battle itself, obviously. I'm not saying it'll be anything like SotC in terms of overall structure, as I made clear in the next-to-last paragraph.

There is no puzzle element when climbing the titan.
In Shadow of the colossus every Colossus was a different puzzle to defeat.
In this game the titan puts the hand down and then the hero climb's it.

Apparently there are at least two of these beasts in the first three chapters, so I'm kind of inclined to think you'll have to tackle one at the end of most. And considering I want SotC badly, but am noot willing to pay the cost of a new game for it on ebay, this will have to suffice. Unless of course we get a Team Ico bundle. not to rain on the parade but the video just didn't give me much of that SoTC feeling like it was conveyed in the article. Quite frankly im tired of games having easy bosses and this one looks like an easy boss judging form the video. I'm hoping that the game has some unique boss battles and that they aren't just adding giant bosses for a 'me too' effect

Castlevania has almost ALWAYS had giant bosses. Even in the 8Bit days, although BIG then isn't nearly as big now. Beelzebub in Symphony couldn't even bee seen on the screen as a whole, neither could Galamoth or "Legion", really. And Drac was massive in Symphony.

by big, i meant big like in the video or in other games like SotC or even GoW3. Huge where you have to climb up them and attack them. And even then, those large bosses were never truly tough, unless you try to defeat Galamoth without using the alucard shield power or the crissegram (spelling) sword.

My main point is often times these gigantic bosses are quite often easy to defeat. Even the Dragon God on Demon's Souls was way too easy, that could have been an epic battle put it was done horribly imo, is one of that game's few downfalls

Resistance 2 had some boss fights like that but they were more scripted than anything. it looked cool but no challenge. Same with GoW3, really cool looking battle but it wasn't challenging.

SoTC, playing it for the first time years ago, just gave a more satisfying feeling of slaying a giant

To each their own, I guess. The difficulty of video games is subjective to the individual players. One person can play through a game on the hardest difficulty setting and have no issues, while another will struggle on the easiest.

That being said, however, I'm not one to let difficulty get in the way of my enjoyment of the game. I struggled through God of War and God of War II when I first played them on the normal setting, so when God of War III came out, I had used my past knowledge and experience of the previous two games to blow through the third one in a very satisfying way, simply because it worked with the narrative being told. Kratos had been hammered about by the Gods for over a decade, it was time for retribution, and I took great glee in destroying the holy life out of them. But that's me, and that's not everyone else's experience with the games.

For myself, and people like me (if they exist) a game's difficulty doesn't hender or even enhance their enjoyment of it. As a kid, I loved the Ninja Gaiden series, and it was hella hard. As an adult, I dislike it greatly, 'cause despite the challenging nature of the new 3D series, the difficulty doesn't pay off with a narrative that's satisfying nor rewarding.

All in all, I have no idea what I'm trying to say, 'cause I just lost my train of thought.

So... ignore this ramble. Haha.

It reminds me of Galamoth, only you get to climb onto the giant this time.

What I find hilarious about 3D Castlevanias (this one not included yet) is that other game franchises did a better job of capturing the vibe and feel of the 2D 'Vanias in a 3D world than they did. God of War, etc. I remember the first time I played the original God of War and it reminded me of the old school 'vania games. The first one a little bit, Simon's Quest and Castlevania III a bit more; and even a little of Symphony of the Night. While all the 3D 'vanias were just bland and uninteresting.

I never did finish III. :(

First of all, just let me say that I don't want Shadow Of The Colossus 2. A classic should stay a classic, but I do want Ico and SotC HD. Now, on to the Castlevania:LOS. Like I mentioned before, I'm still undecide on this game because the producer made stupid comment about Uncharted 2, I know someone asked me not to be stupid, but I guess I'm stupid like that. Valve rubbed me the wrong way before, not until Gabe Newell himself made the appearance at Sony E3 conference that I finally changed my view about them. Anyway, somewhere someone said this game is a combination of God of War, Shadow of Colossus, and Uncharted 2. What do you guys think?

Not sure where you'd be getting it from, but just as a starting point,
Gamestops in the US are asking $19.99 for a used SOTC

And if they can even get an ICO in on a trade-in, ICO still has a crazy going rate of $39.99 (due to it still being in great demand & very few are traded in???)

Yeah, I'll probably just wait for the HD remaster, but yeah, I'd be getting it from game mania, where used games are expensive... Though I know it'll still be there even if I plan to buy it in a couple of weeks, since there aren't many people here who can tell you which games are gold, since they mostly just play Cod:MW2 and BFBC2, most all of them go like "?" when I tell them they should play Demon's Souls, I don't even bother, also no-one seems to know that Uncharted 2 is pure awesome, they don't like Killzone 2 either...
But anyways, thanks for the advice, I'll just wait till the remastered version :)

So the next Castlevania in going to be a SotC/GOW hybrid? That's not a bad combo to say the least. I guess someone was bound to make a SotC sequel.

I didn't like that music for the video. I don't mind Heavy Metal, in fact Bon Jovi is my favorite! It just seemed distracting and out of place.

I'm sure the game will have an epic symphony orchestra score....like the movies.
