TGS 2010: Capcom Unleashes New DMC, Asura's Wrath
A little while ago, Capcom put concern and fear in the hearts of all Devil May Cry fans by saying the franchise needed a new "Western touch."
Capcom boss Keiji Inafune admits the popular series has fared well in Japan, but apparently hasn't hit sales expectations in North America and Europe. Hence, as just announced at TGS 2010, a new Devil May Cry - aforementioned touch included - is coming. One of the rumors did turn out to be true, as development is being handled by the UK-based Ninja Theory (Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West) and Capcom called the new effort a "re-imagining" of the franchise. This time, we'll get a young Dante in what amounts to a prequel; his hair hasn't gone silver yet, and he has what appears to be a new weapon that reminds us of Ivy from Soul Calibur (only darker). Here's the official trailer:
This fresh take on Dante and Co. - currently unnamed - is coming to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but we don't have an estimated release window just yet. But there's more. Capcom also unveiled a new IP entitled Asura's Wrath, in development at Japanese studio CyberConnect2. This one is about as nuts as it comes, with insanely fast-paced action, a clearly over-the-top premise, and a whole lot of patented Japanese action flair. It appears to be a massive brawler of some kind:
No release date for this one, either, but it's also coming to the PS3 and 360. So what think you of the announcements? It's clear that the new DMC does indeed have that "Western touch" but at least the action appears to be super cool, and it might be interesting to see the story behind how Dante became...well, older Dante.

And though i think i've had enough of unreal-generated games, the new Street-Fighter-esque animation in Asura's Wrath seems pretty insane (in a nutty kind of way, ya know, like everyone's fighting while high on crack).

But it's supposed to be a reboot, interested to see how this one turns out then.
Dunno what to think of Asura's Wrath. It's developed by CC2 so it can't turn out that bad. On the other hand it runs on UE3 and the trailer showed the 360 version, which foreshadows something nasty -_-
After all CC2's first multi-plat game is NUNS2, so given their knowledge of Sony's machine I would've expected a PS3 trailer.
Game looks frenetic and bad-ass though. Besides CC2 know how to create stunning presentations (in boss battles) ^^

believe me, NUNS2 will friggin rock. I've seen the roster and it made me drool. The fighting system's simple, but there's still enough room for advanced tactics + unique character moves/tactics.
I'm not watching the Anime (coz the first episodes of Shippuuden sucked) but this game is gonna be way better than the Anime ;)
@Kiryu
yea, Aizen Sousuke kicks ass. Once I've got my hands on this wallpaper (it's by stfun) I had to make an appropriate avatar ^^
regarding Asura's Wrath: I dunno whether the Jap. version will have Jap. VO as Capcom usually hires English VAs for their games.
RE4, RE5, DMC4 were all handled that way. Even though CC2 are developing it - and they always include the original Jp VOs in international versions of their games - Capcom are still publishing it. If they say we don't wanna strain western brains with subtitles CC2 simply can't include Jap. VOs.
Unfortunately there are way too few westerners who prefer Jap. VOs (me included) in Japanese games, so the big publishers don't care about them.
btw. thanks for the link ;)

Well, another game that has a......Snake-wannabe voice?
First of all, this Dante is UGLY!!
Second, THE HECK DO THEY EVEN NEED TO REBOOT THE GOD DAMN SERIES WHEN THE CLIFFHANGER AT THE END OF DMC2 IS STILL HANGING!!!!
And it's been like what?
7 FRIGGIN' YEARS!!!!!
After DMC2 we got a prequel, a spin-off and now a reboot?
Where's that sequel everyone has been asking for?
Oh wait, Capcom don't care about us after all.
Going as far as to laughed off a new Onimusha.(Well I never played Onimusha but I know it's a popular franchise)

If it's true that sales of DMC were flagging in NA and Europe (and Capcom has no reason to lie about that), and they wanted to boost sales, what could they have done...?
Sticking with the same formula obviously wouldn't be an answer because that wasn't working. I mean, just looking at it from a business standpoint; no personal opinion involved.
It can't just be, "I hate it so Capcom's stupid."

But...
so far, Heavenly Sword is doing pretty well for me in terms of story-telling. They managed to at least veer away from the usual cliches. DMC on the other hand, had a pretty consistent (and predictable) story. Note though that I haven't played DMC4 yet so my opinion's not 100%.

Classic franchise? The series hasn't even been around for a decade and 2 great games, 1 okay, and 1 bad doesn't make for a "classic" franchise.

From what the trailer looks like to me, this new Devil May Cry game just looks like a Westernized reboot of the franchise. The gameplay could very well be the same as throughout the series, but even the slightest change in the visuals of the game may or may not appeal to a larger audience. Dante, when looked at through a lot of folks eyes, might not be a character that everyone wants to play as. Dante fits perfectly within the Bishonen structure, as do a lot of other characters in Japanese fiction (Vampire Hunter D, Vega from Street Fighter, etc., etc.) and that might not appeal to the video game players in the States who like their heroes to look a lot more masculine. Of course, why Heavenly Sword chose a more emo-like appearance is beyond me; but there are a lot of emo-kids out in the States, so maybe that's their new target audience?
For comparison. I love horror. Grew up on it, named after it, I want to write it for a living, all that kind of stuff. One of my favorite horror movies in the last twenty years (I am kinda old) is Takashi Miike's Audition. However, it isn't a horror movie that's too overly popular in the States because A) it's Japanese and B) it isn't at all like what's being done in the States that constitutes as horror. There are very little by way of jump scares, and it doesn't really have a return to the status quo, happy ending. It's also quite long, being tons of buildup towards the last ten or fifteen minutes. So while Devil May Cry may be a very great action game series (I don't like it 'cause I suck at it, and I'll be honest about it; I couldn't beat the first boss in the first game, and I've not ever touched a DMC game since haha) the crossover appeal from a Japanese audience to a massive American audience, or Western audience, just isn't there.
I'm not saying this is neither a good thing or a bad thing, but I can totally see why Capcom and Square-Enix, and other Japanese devs and publishers are struggling to make games that not only appeal to Western gamers but are massively successful in the Western market. The biggest negative -- which also adds to the struggle -- is that they're risking the ostracization (sp?) of their already established user base. And in some cases, like with Final Fantasy, that's a pretty huge user base/fan base.
As for what I think they could've done differently? Just give Dante a new skin texture for the States and Western world. Make him less Bishonen, put a shirt on him, and rough him up a bit. More masculinity and less metrosexualism.

But I'm with Master Shams. Whether this makes good business sense or not, I'd rather not see the good series re-invented, but, rather, launch a new series... even a spin-off would be fine. Just don't make the core DMC gamers feel that this is the new face of DMC going forward. I like the wise-craking-confident-white-haired-stylish japanese style of DMC.
Not the morbid, dreary, mentally agonized, dark haired, i-wanna-be-a-vampire-kid who has no business wearing Dante's coat.
Call that Devil Me Vampire, or something, instead.

By bring up, Heavenly Sword, I was not for myself comparing the two. I was trying to brainstorm what Capcom must've been thinking when they handed over their baby. The obvious answer is they're trying westernize their game to get with the times. And i stand by the saying that imitation is cheap.
Regarding DMC, it may not be a classic like Mario or Metroid, but before Kratos, Dante was practically a PS icon. He spawned comic books and cartoon series. The series spawned two games DMC1 and DMC3/3se that rank amongst the best action-adventurers/hack'n slashes, and garnered quite a large following wide both in the east as well as the west. Even Jaffe regards it as one of GOW's influences. It may not be a classic to you, but it is undeniably an influential game with a large following.

Saying that DMC is not a classic is kind of hard to, for a lack of a better term, justify/disapprove. What I mean is that the subject is very relative. To you something might be a classic but the same doesn't necessarily hold true in other peoples opinions. Even though some may say classics are universally accepted pieces of art, for example, there's never a definitive right or wrong to what one may hold to be a classic. I hope that makes sense. IMHO DMC was a classic. Though it had it's bumps and bruises, it nearly single handedly gave life to the H&S genre and there's no denying that and there's no way to even take that achievement away from it. I wont even begin to post what I think cause it would just be one huge rant of disapproval. I just love this game so much, and for them to just treat it the way they did just upsets me....but Ben did give a good point. The fact that the game isn't doing well "to them" could have meant good riddance for this franchise much like that of Onimusha, regardless of the fan base. In a way I guess is does show that they love the project, but still...why outsource it and why reboot? To me it seems like they're getting really greedy just like what happened with the RE franchise. RE5, though a good game, can't stand NOWHERE NEAR its predecessors. Back to DMC...there are plenty of things they could have done. Still, the game looks similar, but I have to admit it looks too stiff for my DMC taste. The punk style grows on me more and more with every trailer view. However I do see NT's art style. In fact this looks like they're using the same engine being use on enslaved(not a bad thing). BUT WHY DID THEY HAVE TO REDESIGN HIM? That's my main gripe. Hopefully this isn't the end of a good franchise. This westernization crap is really becoming a huge pain in the ass now.

I wasn't hating, I read it all just damn dude that's a lot to read in one post.
@Dridion
You need to add some spacing in there so it's easier for us to read what you write. Within the context that "classic" was being used I was VERY justified in questioning the usage of the word for the DMC series. I understand with descriptive words there can be arguing on all sides and nothing will ever be concluded.
I'm simply keeping an open mind to what Capcom is doing with the series and I certainly don't consider DMC free from change, even if it may not be the change some fans are looking for.
@Shams
If you post something it's open to discussion. If you wish for your words to not be taken literal then I suggest not posting or adding a big fat /s.

CC2 are the masters of frantic, over-the-top action sequences, NUNS proved that. Judging by the Demo of NUNS2 they've ramped things up even more.
They have the talent and the PS3-know-how.
Dunno which engine they used for NUNS but I guess it was too cell shaded for Asura's Wrath.
Hope they can utilize their knowledge to optimize UE3 for PS3, but honestly I'm, not expecting anything less from CC2, those guys are awesome.
As for DMC - gonna wait for more game play footage and hands on reports before I decide on a purchase, 'coz I really don't like Dante's new look ^^

One: By the sounds of it, this is set before DMC3, and even though Capcom considers it a reboot, many fans will continue to think of it as DMC5. With that in mind, how does Devil May Cry (the business) fit into it at all? Add to that some of Dante's signatures such as Devil Trigger, and the other characters that we've come to know through the course of the franchise.
I'm sure that NT will be able to do a good job on the story, but really this does need to lead up to DMC3. It needs to introduce Vergil to the player (maybe as an ally), it needs to show Dante going from that to himself and it needs to show the relation between Dante and Nero. Oh man, such an abuse.
Peace.

i hope they keep the storylines synced, because devil may cry 3 was already a sequel with a young dante...and his hair was already white. In fact in DMC 3 that when he firt discovers he can activate the devil trigger. In fact i'm pretty sure his hair's always been white. sigh, they better not expect me to shell out just because it a franchise. I hated 2 but loved 1 and 3. 4 was meh for me. whatever...

It would be interesting though, if this "Dante" turned out to be Nero who was just kinda nuts before being picked up by the Order. It could then fit in that he was altered, giving him his silver hair (Dante genes???) and name. It is said in DMC4 that Nero also has the blood of Sparda. However, this is all quite a long shot, as Nero didn't smoke, and at the end of the trailer, Dante was putting away a silver gun, and a black gun, being Ebony and Ivory. Would have been nice if they'd kept Reuben Langdon as his voice actor though. Not sure how I feel about this reboot, and I'm not sure how I'm gonna feel about RE's reboot either.

I also think people are judging the new Dante a bit quickly, this isn't like the new Cole, the guys could actually BE Dante at like 16 years old, and we don't know he's gonna have a different character as of yet, or that it's going in a wildly different direction. People are assuming based on a little bit of action.
Though I will say he doesn't need the gruff voice, whereas Snake and Cole do.

And as for CyberConnet2, UGH, they're making this game instead of a new .hack? Boo, sigh, they need to make a new part of the series on the PS3, .Hack is one of my most beloved franchises on my ps2 =( Also I wished they would re-think their stance on a real .hack MMO, that would rock and would seriously be the first MMO that I would ever pay for no problem.

Who knows, maybe to try to please long time fans, they'll let his devil trigger turn him into his traditional look.
But enough skepticism, I at least think that the game looks interesting enough to play, and with that I have high hopes for this game. I hope my expectations don't fall short on this one.

Oh! Wait capcom has already done that with DMC series & using the same formula didn't work...HMMMM! I wonder if this is the reason they went in a different direction.
PPL bring up How they westernize the new Final Fantasy, well 4 one thing the Final Fantasy series is (1) an older series, (2) Has sold a shitload more games than the DMC series. So naturally because it's older series which not only meet, but went beyond expectations in sales, the western touch didn't work out 4 the latest Final Fantasy installment or rather it wasn't needed. This is not the case with the DMC series so in my Eyes this "western touch" as Capcom puts it, might actually work better 4 this series seeing as how it kinda already had a somewhat western feel to it anyway.

god im sick of this!
first they change RE into a mindless shooting game, than they turn DMC 4 into a repetitive boring crap heap, than they completely screw up LP2 and now this!
thats it, capcom are now officially my most hated company in this industry!
creating bad games is one thing, but taking famous series and turning them into something there not is a unforgivable sin!
imagine what would happen if bungie turned halo into a freaking dance rhythm game!
the fans would storm bungie HQ, and submerge every developer in nitric acid!

Dante doing his best to survive in a hellbent city before his demon powers are fully developed (hence the lack of white hair and probably not due to fear).
Being in a mental hospital isn't too much of a stretch. He claims he's a demon or people just observe him exhibiting odd behavior. Maybe the government wants to use him as a weapon.
This is set to be more of an origin story than just young Dante in the 3rd game.
People need to stop freaking out. We don't even know what kind of gameplay changes are in store. So far it looks pretty similar and still badass.
