PSXE Poll Update: PS3 Owners Split On Plus Interest

PlayStation Plus offers a variety of incentives and perks to members; the premium PSN subscription costs $17.99 for three months or $49.99 for a year. The question for last week was, do you want it?

As it turns out, the PSXE readers are split right down the middle on this issue. While almost exactly half the poll participants said if they aren't already a member, they'll probably sign up later, the other half simply said they're not interested at all. It's clear that Plus is better for those who spend more time on the Network, although there are a few bonuses for the solitary gamers who tend to play alone. And of course, as Plus is still a relatively new option, it still needs time to prove itself on a continual basis; we'll be waiting on those exclusive betas, early demo accessibility, etc. One can make the argument that even the $50 subscription pays for itself in a matter of a month or two but then again, many gamers either A. don't have the time to be too hardcore, and B. don't feel like spending extra cash on something they're not 100% on.

This week, we want to know which TGS 2010 game caught your attention. Which one really jumped out at you? ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection? Mikami and Suda 51's new horror shooter, Shadows of the Damned? CyberConnect2's insane new brawler, Asura's Wrath?

isnt hulu plus a separate subscription. i thought it was available to all users who would pay for it. not like live where they jacked the price up of their subscription because all these other features are mandatory.

Yeah, I believe Hulu Plus is a separate fee like Netflix (something like 9.99 a month) and was earlier offered to Plus members as an early beta/introduction to the service for a couple weeks a few months ago. But it's available to anyone on the PSN. But again you will need to have a Hulu membership which costs money.

There really is no reason not to sign up. I have already downloaded well over $50 worth of content and it's only been a few months. My subscription doesn't expire until Oct. 2011. Still a ton more to download in the coming months. Best $50 I have ever spent on any kind of subscription based service.

As for the new poll, hands down, Team ICO stole the show.

Free DLC for quite a few psn based games, and free ps1 classics and mini's. And just cause you don't like them, there still are other PSN free games =P thought I personally bought Mushroom Wars before I got ps+, haha

I have a reason, though =p

Mostly because I've found, in my experience, that bargain shopping usually means more money spent while getting less of the games I actually want.

I usually dislike being put in a situation where I feel obligated to a purchase in order to get the "most value" out of a paid service. I'd rather bargain shop on my own terms through my choice vendors or used game suppliers than feeling locked into a single outlet for the reason of maximizing value.

This isn't to say that if the stars aligned and PSN+ happened to offer a compelling heavily discounted package that I wouldn't go ahead and give PSN+ a try for the immediate value (Warhawk expansion pack trio).

I also know that PSN+ offers more value outside of game discounts: beta opt-ins, early demos(that would've been had anyway w/o PSN+) and free Qore content etc. and early access to services like Hulu--maybe it's a beta but it's still essentially a charged service not unlike Live and Netflix.

Anyhow, my "good reasons"

Meh, for only $50 I've managed to save more than $50 in only a few months with the program. I'd say that's proof enough that it's a great service that is worth the fee. It isn't for everyone though. If you don't frequent the PSN or keep current on the latest deals than I doubt the service is for you.

It's nice we have the choice though, thank you Sony.

I wouldn't see $50 of benefit over the year. Unless I downloaded every free game regardless of whether I gave a damn about it or not.

Warhawk aside, I've probably only spent $30 on the PSN since I bought my PS3 almost at launch and I don't see my purchasing trend changing anytime in the future.

I don't think I'd get the most out of any free or heavily discounted dlc either as I might find time to justify purchasing 4 games per year.. maybe.

Completely understand where ppl are coming from and agree with Temjin001.

The thing is for me, i dont roam around PSN looking for new stuff to download, even though its £40 a year, and you could save that within a couple of months of free downloads, I would never have downloaded the paid content thats free on PS+ in the first place so its a waste of £40 for someone like me.

DMC looks cool but eh, I can't get worked up about it. The ICO projects are pretty far off so I can't get too thrilled about them either. Asuras wrath looks like a typical big-guy lamefest.

Shadows of the Damned is looking pretty sweet aside from some poopy graphics. But I voted for Alice. I really think it could turn out to be pretty twisted with its console foray and the first one was pretty fun.

I don't know, World. Cyber Connect has done some pretty outrageous stuff with Naruto. While I think this new game isn't quite selling my time just yet, I wouldn't be surprised if they pull off a highly energized game that turns out to be a fun play.

On a side note. Sometimes devs surprise me. If you've signed up for a euro-PSN account snag that Enslaved demo if you haven't already. It's pretty cool, and the demo has a few holy crap moments. Though, Jawknee beware, the demo was rife with screen tearing. Even the frame-rate felt pretty unstable--not a game breaker, or nothing. Hopefully, Ninja Theory optimizes the code for the final game. I am a bit curious how the 360 will compare seeing that, traditionally, UE3 games tend to edge out PS3 on the performance end.

Shadows of The Damned: This looks promising, but the trailer i seen looks bad ass with the metal music playing and people flying etc, so I'll be watching this one.

When I logged on the other day Tomb Raider was only available for download if you had Playstation +. WTF? And it was still double the price of a usual PS1 classic! It seems ridiculous that I had to wait for this game to come to non-paying people, there was no logical reason why it couldn't be released for everyone at the same time. Or even releasing it for both but giving Playstation + members a discount would've been more logical.

I can understand why a multiplayer beta would be exclusive to P+ members, but PS1 classics don't make sense. I hope Sony doesn't make a habit of this.

Where do you live? Tomb Raider has been available as a PS1 Classic on the PSN well before the Plus service. You're correct it's listed at 9.99 (the same price as RE and the FF games) but it's not only available to Plus members. Unless shown otherwise I'm pretty sure you're mistaken. Not being a Plus member doesn't restrict anyone from PS1 games.

I live in New Zealand, but we get the same things as the European store. So as usual we get shafted when it comes to PS1 Classics compared to you guys in the US, and of course Japan.

I first saw that Tomb Raider was available by chance because I looked to see what was available for PS+ members. I saw it and noticed it was NZ$18.50 (equivalent to US$9.99) but that was just for PS+ members, because when I went to purchase it from the PS1 Classics section of the store it wasn't there. Then when I went back to buy it from the PS+ section I was of course denied :( It's now available for everyone, but at this time it wasn't, and that's what frustrates me.

Sounds like for us on the Euro store it was a timed release thing. I expect most of the major demos arriving in the next few months will do the same thing, allowing plus members to dl while the rest of us wait a few weeks.

To be honest, that sort of thing I'm not too bothered about as long as we get access eventually.

Alice seems interesting. DmC is tempting. Yakuza is slick as hell, and of the wall. Glad to see something different there, but it's the ICO bundle hands-down.

Slightly related, to last week's poll: Once again my Xbox exclusive friend and I were arguing. He was trying to tell me that Reach is the greatest game he's ever played. I told him to play U2:AT, ahd he told me he had and thought that it was inferior graphically and gameplay-wise and that he was unimpressed with the story. I went, huh...
The second part is more on topic, I swear: We got to talking about the online services. When I mentioned PSPlus and the goodies it offers, he brought up Live. First he said that it had dropped in price but it had gone back up since a major update. I asked him what had changed to make it worth paying more and he said that you get as many games and movies as you want for free, provided you pay for Gold. I just shook my head. There's no way that I can believe that.
Sorry for the long boring story, but I've got to tell someone.
Peace.

I have a buddy at work that only owns a 360 and is a huge fan of the Halo series but he's had nothing but negative things to say about Reach. He justifies Live by explaining to me it offers the better online experience thanks to the community. I find that argument laughable since the Live scene is full of kids and really no different than anything available on the PSN.

I felt bad hearing about how much he's disappointed in Reach, he'd been talking it up for a year now.

Well Lawless, my personal run-ins with fanboys are typically argued by an emotional perception of satisfaction: I'm happy with what I have, therefore I take little interest in what else is out there because I'm so satisfied with what I've got. I'm basically echoing a sentiment shared by a relative earlier tonight who is a Nintendo supporter to the 1st degree. He's been playing FF3 on his DS, and has played FF4 and FF6 as well. He has absolutely no desire for a Sony or MS anything despite the other huge mass of FF games on Sony's platform. In his eyes, they basically don't exist.

I don't think this is too far removed from your instance. He may claim the reason is because he thinks LIVE is better, but in reality, I doubt that's the case. These guys are committed and satisfied with their world of gaming entertainment and asking them to pick-up and leave their community, achievements, and Halo is a lot to ask. Especially upon casual observation that the differences between gaming libraries, online services, and graphics quality are relatively minor between these two platforms. Basically, a lot of what's interesting on PS3, is also found on 360 to some extent, sometimes to a lesser extent when considering the breadth of SOny's quality line-up of franchises. I really believe so much of the animosity between MS and PS camps is due to how similar their target audiences are.
Cleave onto one and hate the other is basically how I see it.

LV, well too bad for him. As a gamer who's taken part in every Halo, Reach is definitely the best yet. I have no idea what your friend was expecting from it. If it was to be so radically different, it wouldn't be a Halo game. No one wants a turn-based Halo game, do they?

First of that's ridiculous, Xbox Live has never dropped in price and in fact in the US, UK, Canada, and Mexico on November 1st prices are going UP to $60 a year from $50. All for a reason that's yet to be explained, although some seem to think it's because of ESPN integration or something.

That's an interesting theory there Temjin, I honestly hadn't thought of it that way, but now, as I do think about it, I think that may be the reason that I have very little interest in the 360. Not because the PS3 is the superior console but because the systems, and the experiences available on them, aren't all that different from one another.

I mean, I wouldn't mind trying Halo, given the acclaim that the franchise has garnered since its introduction, but I maintain that KZ is the better franchise. Were I to get a 360, it would be for Gears, Alan Wake, and perhaps Kinect.

AntDC, That was exactly what I thought. He said that it had dropped from $80AUD, down to fifty and was now going back up to seventy, or something of that ilk. I stopped listening when he started talking about free full games just for the subscription.

One last thing, Temjin. They already did a game vastly different from standard Halo fare. It was called Halo Wars, and while it wasn't as popular as the other games in the franchise, it still managed to sell over a million units.
Peace.

I personally really like Reach more than the other Halos that I have played which has been 2 and a few hours of 3. Reach has some neat stuff about it but I don't play my 360 online at all so I don't know about the multiplayer aspect of it. I do have to state though that Reach does seem to be pretty much standard fare for a Halo entry though with some additions glossing it up. Jetpacks, 'nuff said. I don't see a large leap in graphical representation though compared to Halo 3.

All in all it's a good game but then again I haven't been Halo-ed out by playing all the other entries ad nauseum

Though I'm kinda concern for 2 things, I want a free camera control instead of the rotating crap and more characters for dispatching.

Another is DmC, I'm willing to overlook the new Dante if the gameplay is amazing.

I'm sure PS+ is a good deal for people who download a lot of stuff from PSN, but I don't, so it's just not for me.

Of the TGS games, Alice: Madness Returns has that Gothic aesthetic I absolutely love, so that would be my pick. Of course I have no idea what the gameplay will consist of at this point.

Asura's Wrath looks rather insane, that might be fun. Shadows of the Damned looks pretty corny, but who knows. Yakuza: Of The End is some kind of zombie shooter type deal? Another one that looks moderately interesting. It's way too early to tell about any of those games based on some short trailers. But good stuff to keep an eye on. The best part is that there are a lot of Western games I'm interested in, and now we've got some Eastern style games to add to the mix. Variety is the spice of life.

From what I've seen this far, the Plus offerings have been lame ! A few of the games that are offered free are not good games to begin with so I assume Sony's stance is "if you can't sell it just give it away" ! I downloaded the old PS1 game "Rally Cross" and the control was less than stellar ! I never liked the game when it was on the PS1 so I'm not sure I thought it would be better this time around !

For $50 annually, I need to some some substance otherwise that's not a feasible way to spend $50 bucks to me !

I would get it, but I’ve already downloaded like 90% of PSN; so there is no real value there for me.

I’ll, however, get Plus if Sony offers MMO subscriptions for free or at discounted rates because I really want to play DC Universe Online and The Agency; but I’m not a big MMO gamer, so I doubt if I’ll play enough to justify $15 a month. I guess I could play it nonstop for a month or two, get my fun out of it, and shelve it.

With MMOs being new to consoles and both DCUO and The Agency being Sony games, I would have bet Sony wouldn’t put a monthly fee on its PS3 MMOs. Then, again, I guess DC wants to get paid.

I'm planning on getting a plus subscription in the near future.
Regarding the current poll, I wish square would see the results. All the anouncements at TGS and we are most excited about ICO and SOTC. Anyways, beating a dead horse.

Why Square? It's not like they have their finger on the pulse of the gaming community any more nor does it seem they wish to know what the gamers think. Remember when they were taken by surprise at the level of people that wanted a FFVII remake? Their radar for the gamers' desires is so far off it isn't even funny.

yeah, you're right. I forgot they already know what gamers want.

Even though I am severely in the minority on this one, Alice: Madness Returns got me the most excited. If you didn't play American McGee's Alice on the PC then you missed out a pretty twisted take on Alice in Wonderland. Definitely a good game and I am looking forward to the sequel.

As for PS+, I've been a subscriber since the day it was available and like most people's complaints about it, I really didn't expect to use it much at all because I don't spend a terribly large amount of money on the PSN to begin with. Maybe spent $40 on it since I bought my PS3 back in '07. Well, I figured I could at least make up the $50 by the end of 15 months so I did it. I have made the money up easy. I have gotten games that I never would have bought otherwise and I only got them because I figured hell they're free why not. Turns out I have liked the games a great deal and would have never played them had I not gotten them through PS+

Bottom line is, for $50 for an entire year I am discovering games that I never would have and loving them and getting well more than my money's worth.

i think Shadow of the Damned looks pretty horrible actually. Wasn't a huge fan of No More Heroes and the coconut gathering. LOL. As much as i want to like it, it just looks cheap and kind of weak. Asuras wrath looks cool though.

Plus seems like a good deal but i'm in the same boat as some others members here. I don't shop on the PSN very much. Especially for games and DLC. I don't really do the beta's anymore because they always leave a bad taste in my mouth. I have Medal of Honor beta to thank for that. Usually if i buy anything on the network it's movies and breaking bad episodes.

The game that interests me the most is not on the list..Project Dark.

Possibly Demon's Souls 2.....I can only hope.

it can't be "Demon's Souls 2" because I'm pretty sure IP can't be changed to a different platform, but it's essentially a spiritual successor.
