PSXE Poll Update: PS3 Owners Split On Plus Interest
PlayStation Plus offers a variety of incentives and perks to members; the premium PSN subscription costs $17.99 for three months or $49.99 for a year. The question for last week was, do you want it?
As it turns out, the PSXE readers are split right down the middle on this issue. While almost exactly half the poll participants said if they aren't already a member, they'll probably sign up later, the other half simply said they're not interested at all. It's clear that Plus is better for those who spend more time on the Network, although there are a few bonuses for the solitary gamers who tend to play alone. And of course, as Plus is still a relatively new option, it still needs time to prove itself on a continual basis; we'll be waiting on those exclusive betas, early demo accessibility, etc. One can make the argument that even the $50 subscription pays for itself in a matter of a month or two but then again, many gamers either A. don't have the time to be too hardcore, and B. don't feel like spending extra cash on something they're not 100% on.
This week, we want to know which TGS 2010 game caught your attention. Which one really jumped out at you? ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection? Mikami and Suda 51's new horror shooter, Shadows of the Damned? CyberConnect2's insane new brawler, Asura's Wrath?

As for the new poll, hands down, Team ICO stole the show.

Mostly because I've found, in my experience, that bargain shopping usually means more money spent while getting less of the games I actually want.
I usually dislike being put in a situation where I feel obligated to a purchase in order to get the "most value" out of a paid service. I'd rather bargain shop on my own terms through my choice vendors or used game suppliers than feeling locked into a single outlet for the reason of maximizing value.
This isn't to say that if the stars aligned and PSN+ happened to offer a compelling heavily discounted package that I wouldn't go ahead and give PSN+ a try for the immediate value (Warhawk expansion pack trio).
I also know that PSN+ offers more value outside of game discounts: beta opt-ins, early demos(that would've been had anyway w/o PSN+) and free Qore content etc. and early access to services like Hulu--maybe it's a beta but it's still essentially a charged service not unlike Live and Netflix.
Anyhow, my "good reasons"

Warhawk aside, I've probably only spent $30 on the PSN since I bought my PS3 almost at launch and I don't see my purchasing trend changing anytime in the future.
I don't think I'd get the most out of any free or heavily discounted dlc either as I might find time to justify purchasing 4 games per year.. maybe.

The thing is for me, i dont roam around PSN looking for new stuff to download, even though its £40 a year, and you could save that within a couple of months of free downloads, I would never have downloaded the paid content thats free on PS+ in the first place so its a waste of £40 for someone like me.

Shadows of the Damned is looking pretty sweet aside from some poopy graphics. But I voted for Alice. I really think it could turn out to be pretty twisted with its console foray and the first one was pretty fun.

On a side note. Sometimes devs surprise me. If you've signed up for a euro-PSN account snag that Enslaved demo if you haven't already. It's pretty cool, and the demo has a few holy crap moments. Though, Jawknee beware, the demo was rife with screen tearing. Even the frame-rate felt pretty unstable--not a game breaker, or nothing. Hopefully, Ninja Theory optimizes the code for the final game. I am a bit curious how the 360 will compare seeing that, traditionally, UE3 games tend to edge out PS3 on the performance end.

I voted for ICO and SotC even though i probably wont buy them. Its great to see two of the greatest games getting some love. Neither was nearly as popular as they deserved so hopefully this will bump up sales for TLG as well.

The Poll:
Asura's Wrath: Looks interesting, but i'll have to stay on the sidelines to see what comes up.
Shadows of The Damned: This looks promising, but the trailer i seen looks bad ass with the metal music playing and people flying etc, so I'll be watching this one.
Alice Madness Returns: Game looks freaky but i will definitely keep an eye out, i like games like this.
But my vote goes with ICO.

And man, hehe the game is so dang unforgiving. Throws are the bane of all ninja existence. Why can't Ryu's guillotine throw be a one hit kill, too?
BTW, I tried the lesser ultimate ninja mission where you face off with two cyber ryu's. I can't believe with a crappy AI partner I managed to get them both half dead...

I'm actually looking forward to the Alice Madness Returns game mostly. It seems to exude a freaky, twisted, and horrifying scent that has tickled my eccentric game buds. Here's to hoping it turns out to be a polished and satisfying title!!

I can understand why a multiplayer beta would be exclusive to P+ members, but PS1 classics don't make sense. I hope Sony doesn't make a habit of this.

I first saw that Tomb Raider was available by chance because I looked to see what was available for PS+ members. I saw it and noticed it was NZ$18.50 (equivalent to US$9.99) but that was just for PS+ members, because when I went to purchase it from the PS1 Classics section of the store it wasn't there. Then when I went back to buy it from the PS+ section I was of course denied :( It's now available for everyone, but at this time it wasn't, and that's what frustrates me.

Slightly related, to last week's poll: Once again my Xbox exclusive friend and I were arguing. He was trying to tell me that Reach is the greatest game he's ever played. I told him to play U2:AT, ahd he told me he had and thought that it was inferior graphically and gameplay-wise and that he was unimpressed with the story. I went, huh...
The second part is more on topic, I swear: We got to talking about the online services. When I mentioned PSPlus and the goodies it offers, he brought up Live. First he said that it had dropped in price but it had gone back up since a major update. I asked him what had changed to make it worth paying more and he said that you get as many games and movies as you want for free, provided you pay for Gold. I just shook my head. There's no way that I can believe that.
Sorry for the long boring story, but I've got to tell someone.
Peace.

I felt bad hearing about how much he's disappointed in Reach, he'd been talking it up for a year now.

I don't think this is too far removed from your instance. He may claim the reason is because he thinks LIVE is better, but in reality, I doubt that's the case. These guys are committed and satisfied with their world of gaming entertainment and asking them to pick-up and leave their community, achievements, and Halo is a lot to ask. Especially upon casual observation that the differences between gaming libraries, online services, and graphics quality are relatively minor between these two platforms. Basically, a lot of what's interesting on PS3, is also found on 360 to some extent, sometimes to a lesser extent when considering the breadth of SOny's quality line-up of franchises. I really believe so much of the animosity between MS and PS camps is due to how similar their target audiences are.
Cleave onto one and hate the other is basically how I see it.
LV, well too bad for him. As a gamer who's taken part in every Halo, Reach is definitely the best yet. I have no idea what your friend was expecting from it. If it was to be so radically different, it wouldn't be a Halo game. No one wants a turn-based Halo game, do they?

First of that's ridiculous, Xbox Live has never dropped in price and in fact in the US, UK, Canada, and Mexico on November 1st prices are going UP to $60 a year from $50. All for a reason that's yet to be explained, although some seem to think it's because of ESPN integration or something.
Because that totally justifies it...

I mean, I wouldn't mind trying Halo, given the acclaim that the franchise has garnered since its introduction, but I maintain that KZ is the better franchise. Were I to get a 360, it would be for Gears, Alan Wake, and perhaps Kinect.
AntDC, That was exactly what I thought. He said that it had dropped from $80AUD, down to fifty and was now going back up to seventy, or something of that ilk. I stopped listening when he started talking about free full games just for the subscription.
One last thing, Temjin. They already did a game vastly different from standard Halo fare. It was called Halo Wars, and while it wasn't as popular as the other games in the franchise, it still managed to sell over a million units.
Peace.

All in all it's a good game but then again I haven't been Halo-ed out by playing all the other entries ad nauseum

people did not sign up to PSN to get a certain amount in discounts, they signed up to get access to features they otherwise would not have access to do.
how many people do you think would be signed up to XBLA gold if M$ did what sony are doing, and have everything the same between the 2 accounts but instead of paying say 10 bucks for something you can now pay 6.
i did not sign up to plus to get discounts, i signed up to plus to get access to things i otherwise would not have access to.

It's like a dream come true, it's everything I want for a Disgaea game. Upgraded graphic, more depth now for everything. Especially that dual wielding which is awesome.
And now we can do 200 million of damages.
Though I'm kinda concern for 2 things, I want a free camera control instead of the rotating crap and more characters for dispatching.
Another is DmC, I'm willing to overlook the new Dante if the gameplay is amazing.

Of the TGS games, Alice: Madness Returns has that Gothic aesthetic I absolutely love, so that would be my pick. Of course I have no idea what the gameplay will consist of at this point.
Asura's Wrath looks rather insane, that might be fun. Shadows of the Damned looks pretty corny, but who knows. Yakuza: Of The End is some kind of zombie shooter type deal? Another one that looks moderately interesting. It's way too early to tell about any of those games based on some short trailers. But good stuff to keep an eye on. The best part is that there are a lot of Western games I'm interested in, and now we've got some Eastern style games to add to the mix. Variety is the spice of life.

I’ll, however, get Plus if Sony offers MMO subscriptions for free or at discounted rates because I really want to play DC Universe Online and The Agency; but I’m not a big MMO gamer, so I doubt if I’ll play enough to justify $15 a month. I guess I could play it nonstop for a month or two, get my fun out of it, and shelve it.
With MMOs being new to consoles and both DCUO and The Agency being Sony games, I would have bet Sony wouldn’t put a monthly fee on its PS3 MMOs. Then, again, I guess DC wants to get paid.

As for PS+, I've been a subscriber since the day it was available and like most people's complaints about it, I really didn't expect to use it much at all because I don't spend a terribly large amount of money on the PSN to begin with. Maybe spent $40 on it since I bought my PS3 back in '07. Well, I figured I could at least make up the $50 by the end of 15 months so I did it. I have made the money up easy. I have gotten games that I never would have bought otherwise and I only got them because I figured hell they're free why not. Turns out I have liked the games a great deal and would have never played them had I not gotten them through PS+
Bottom line is, for $50 for an entire year I am discovering games that I never would have and loving them and getting well more than my money's worth.

Plus seems like a good deal but i'm in the same boat as some others members here. I don't shop on the PSN very much. Especially for games and DLC. I don't really do the beta's anymore because they always leave a bad taste in my mouth. I have Medal of Honor beta to thank for that. Usually if i buy anything on the network it's movies and breaking bad episodes.
