Rumor: New Open-World Tomb Raider In The Works

Tomb Raider isn't as big as it once was, which is evident with the release of the downloadable title, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

But might we see another full production soon? According to Eurogamer citing an advance copy of PC Gamer, a new Tomb Raider is indeed in the works, and it'll feature an open-world structure and a younger Lara Croft. The game is in development at Eidos and will be published by Square-Enix and is apparently destined to reboot the series once again. The story? A young, not-so-cocky and less experienced Lara finds herself on a mysterious Japanese island with plenty of jungles and dangers. Puzzles, enemies, and other obstacles should await her and if the information is correct, this new - hopefully promising - adventure is slated to arrive in late 2011 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. The competition keeps getting stiffer in the third-person adventure category, as the new king is undeniably Nathan Drake and Co.; Naughty Dog's Uncharted games are about the stiffest competition one can find anywhere.

But hey, everyone still loves Lara, right? Maybe it'll be a big ol' blockbuster and remind us of the '90s. By the way, Guardian of Light is out now on the Xbox Live Marketplace and will come to the PS3 and PC next week.

The picture you've used really brings out just how creepy they've made her. If they're going to bring us back to her youth, they've gotta make her the hot chick she used to be (Underworld was ok on the hot meter).

What they're describing there sounds a lot like Just Cause 2. That kind of crazy gameplay with the collecting of relics, a good story and a hot looking Lara would be an insta-buy for me.

Did you like JC2? Some of the most fun I've had this generation.

I get the feeling that after TRIII they've completely lost focus on what to do with the series and who Lara Croft is. Maybe that's why I haven't really enjoyed a TR game in close to a decade.

Give it a shot, the series bores me now.

I wish them well, Guardian of Light doesn't look like much though. I have no idea how an open-world Tomb Raider would work. I think they would probably do better if they just copied Uncharted, put in lots of sexiness and prayed the 360 crowd got delusions of having their own "Uncharted" that is better because it is on 360 even though it would be multiplat.

Yes, I was hoping for a PS3 exclusive , lets hope the 360 doesn't hold back the PS3, I'm tired of getting the short end of the stick.
I don't know how an open world would work but sounds cool. Just make Lora look good, example nothing like the pic for the article.

I'd like for them to make me feel like an actual archeologist. Raid some tombs, I know that may sound a little crazy to them, given the title and all.

I used to love Tomb Raider when it first hit PSOne. I thought it had a lot more potential than what was ever achieved with the franchise. They could still give us a good game, hopefully.

So the new game is set to take place in Uncanny Valley?

This game needs to be "open-world" like the original Farcry and for goodness sake please make the gunplay fun this time.

I really want to like the TR games but Underworld was so unpolished. TR's track record for good games is so inconsistent I'd rather not get my hopes up.

Lol...this is definitely the Gen of the Reboots.

no wonder people expect this to be a 'golden age' of gaming...if they keep rebooting back to the original when the game was great...but sadly half these reboots are becoming worse...coughdmccough...anywayz

ooooooooo yea now that would be so freaking cool!
id rather a pandemonium collection though, than a reboot of the series.
pandemonium R&C and crash bandicoot are by far the best franchises ever created!!!!!!!

After the last few Tomb Raider games, I think they've worked their way into the "wait 'till it hits the bargain bin" category pretty conclusively. These people just seem years behind other developers in the genre, and I think the chances of them ever putting in the kind of effort necessary to compete is slim to none.

Looking at the current state of the franchise, its quite a shame how both Eidos and Crystal D have taken Tomb Raider from its old school roots and destroyed it in the process. If anything Square Enix should reactivate the Core Design brand and rehire both Adrian and Jeremy Heath-Smith since they really understand the direction Tomb Raider should be going in.

Speaking of Core, my only criticism of them...after years of loyalty to SEGA(especially since how SEGA of Japan and Core Design had a very close relationship),they decided to take Tomb Raider multiplatform leaving the Saturn without a strong title to take on the PS1.

Nah pass on this idea. Lara can't hang with Nathan Drake so they change her up to try and compete with Infamous? Good luck with that...

Just played Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light PS3 demo and I have to say it really sux. This is one I won't waste any time on. That's sad too cause I really liked most of the TR's.
