Nomura: KHIII "Might Be Possible" This Generation

Kingdom Hearts fans have long since asked for a third installment for the PlayStation 3 and although the new PSP entry, Birth by Sleep, is pretty damn good, those fan wishes remain.

In a new EGM interview with Square-Enix producer Tetsuya Nomura (as cited by PlayStation LifeStyle), he actually talks a bit about the prospect of making KHIII. While he does say that "any sequel of the mainstream storyline of the Kingdom Hearts series" would indeed be KHIII, he adds:

"But the problem is that the opportunity of developing the sequel is not currently [possible]. The team is busy, I am busy."

That's sort of discouraging but at least Nomura says he wants to do it, and in fact is preparing to do it. Therefore, it's something fans of the franchise can look forward to, even if they have to wait...the only question is, how long will they have to wait? Will we at least see KHIII during this generation of consoles? In response to that, Nomura replied:

"Yes it might be possible. It is my desire to develop the next Kingdom Hearts on the existing platform, but the problem with a new console is that it has new technical requirements… So, yes, I’m willing to create something on the existing console because when we aim for another non-existing future console, the release of the title will be far in the future. That’s my concern."

Next to the oft-rumored Final Fantasy VII remake, Kingdom Hearts III is the one big S-E announcement RPG fans have been pining for since the start of the PS3 era. Hopefully, we'll be able to bring you an official announcement before the unveiling of the PS4.

When I first play Neir when I rented it from Gamefly, I wasn't crazy about the game, but as the game continued, I started to love the game. After I sent the game back, I felt myself missing the game and the characters. For $28, it might be worth it.

Most anything Nomura touches is gold. I'm sure he's busy with FFvXIII. (it IS him working on that, right?)

Truth be told, I'm willing to wait if it means Nomura will do it. I'm not really willing to accept anyone else to play around with KH. (or that oft rumored game Ben referred to, either)

Maybe if SE wasn't working on a billion titles at once we'd already have a release date...

I really think the most talented members of square should leave and start their own company. Square's business model along with Wada is only holding them back.

I couldn't agree more...
I miss the days where i'd see the Squaresoft logo and automatically buy the game knowing that i'd love it (and i was 8 back then)...

Now SE's all about quantity over quality...

So yeah i wish they'd make a new studio... And even if their games couldn't be named Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts they would at least qualify as one of them... :P

Give us Versus XIII then just use that game engine to make KH3 but more cartoony.

Whats sad is while I likes the KH games, the Final Fantasy characters were alway still way more interesting then Sora and his troubles. I always wish I could take control of Cloud or even Squall instead.

It's really sad to know we're years off from KH3..
While Birth By Sleep was great, I miss playing KH on a big screen. Don't we have enough handheld titles? Why 2 more before a 3rd installment of the main series?!

@Kr3sn1k Yeah, but I'm pretty speculative about how important their content will be.. I'm guessing it'll be almost a filler. I do know that Coded was mostly filler.
Birth by Sleep brought a lot to the table story-wise, while 358/2 Days didn't bring much.

Oh and, it's Xehanort. :P

Man, Kingdom Hearts 3 was one of the reasons I got a PS3 in the first place, even though I didn't even know at the time it would come out on PS3, my 14 year old mind just went with the logical transition for KH2 on PS2, PS3 comes out, Kingdom Hearts 3 must come out on PS3. Of course I thought it would come out somewhere along 2008-2009, since it was 3 years between KH1 and KH2...
Anyways, I'm rambling, as long as Tetsuya Nomura makes it(KH3) and it's on a Sony home console, with that I mean PS3 or maybe PS4, I'll be happy.

Also, Really enjoying Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, I'm currently playing it when I have time at school or on the bus, since I'm really busy with the new study and whatnot.
Not too busy to check PSXE every morning though, it's now a part of my morning ritual, pick up alarm clock(which is my mobile phone), go to quick tabs and press Sony PS3 N..(which would stand for this site).

Let the hate pour but honestly I don't care if they release another KH. The story is extremely childish and the last one was not only easy but you could play almost the entire game without using magic, some RPG.

Well, once I kicked the idea that it was an RPG out of my head, I had fun with it.

...and it's Disney. By default, it almost has to be childish if they're including Disney icons like Mickey and Goofy.

But for the record, I wouldn't be as excited about KHIII as others.

I enjoyed the 1st one and it was pretty cool to see SE characters mingling in Disney worlds. It was certainly a unique concept and the gameplay was rewarding and I kept wanting to see the next Disney themed world.

But then with the 2nd one I realized how one note the concept was and how easy the gameplay had become. Plus the Disney worlds were pretty empty and the storyline was a complete mess.

Glad to hear you're not fully on the KH bandwagon. I'm tired of RPG developers slowly eroding the RPG format.

LimitedVertigo, all things aside, I kind of liked the storyline in the second one. Granted at parts it got hard to follow (like why the hell Riku took on the form of Xehanort), but overall the story made the game feel less kiddy imo. But the game was extremely easy. When they make III, they should definitely take the BbS approach because I died many times in some of those boss fights.

Ben,
Oh Gawd...please don't even suggest such a thing.

I really don't get why developers can't simply keep oldschool game mechanics with next-gen graphics. The DS and PSP are great systems for playing TRUE RPGs but I'm itching for something bigger and better looking. Its a shame that handhelds get a vast majority of the great RPGs this generation.

Yeah. I have yet to hear a rational explanation as to how RPGs are deeper or more involving or just overall BETTER with real-time mechanics.

No, it's "Be all, End all". I even remember a song entitled that.

As for KH, I never even considered it to be a straight up RPG, so the battle mechanics never bothered me. In fact, I'd never even heard of it when I first got the first one. I just saw Cloud on the box art and was like, "must buy".

One of the only impulse purchases I've ever had!

Anyways, I love the series. I haven't played Birth by Sleep yet, and I don't own a DS, but I've played the other 3 titles. (1, 2, and CoM) I'm a completionist, so defeating Sephiroth was always rewarding.

As for the no magic, you can play lots of games without using magic... FFVII and FFVIII included... even FFT you can get away without magic... I know I've commented on FFVIII before in this regard, and I think you guys just aren't taking advantage of the battle system if you find "no use" for magic in these games.

Hey, I used magic all the time in KH, and in FFVIII, Rinoa does more damage with magic for me than Squall could ever cause with melee attacks.

@underdog

I was a magic whore in KHI but KHII ruined it for me. Thats how you know a game's magic system sucks; when you influence someone who loves to use magic as much as I do to barely use it at all. They got rid of some very cool spells like aero and changed the mp bar so you barely had any magic at your disposal.

Also Birth by Sleep is good (2/3 done with it), the battle system is much better than KH2 IMO as now I find myself using magic again. 358/2 days was too repetitive. I would just look up scenes to the game/read the storyline as its not worth buying a DS for.

@LimitedVertigo
YES! omg the worlds were downright pathetic. KH1 worlds were a hell of a lot more vast and there was more in them. KH2 made all the worlds feel empty and lifeless and the only one I liked out of them was Timeless River.

So the team should just stop making Versus which is almost done and start KHIII? Let them finish up Versus and then they will have the right level of knowledge to make KHIII perfect. I love the fact that the team is actually being so careful with their work. They aren't jaded like most other game developers this generation.

Damn it Nomura, CUT THE BS.

I've waited so freaking patiently for KH3 to even be announced and each year you dissapoint everyone and instead announce spin-off! Yea BBS was good and 358/2 was decent but stop this nonsense.

Finish Versus XIII already and get your head out of your butt and get it into gear. Seriously if you can't develop the new KH game after having so much time with the PS3 system before the "the next generation" you have a huge problem. And what worries me about that statement is that I feel like your planing on going multiplat with that cause lord knows the new xbox will probably be out by the time you finish Versus XIII but assuming its finished within the next 4 years I'm pretty sure you won't have to worry about the next generation as far as the ps3 goes.

Epic snail pace and stupidity FTW eh?
Seriously if the game isn't being worked the day after versus XIII is finished you lose a fan.
