Uncharted 2 Dubbed Greatest PlayStation Game Ever

This is bound to create plenty of discussion and arguments. The biggest question is, if you remove nostalgia from the equation, is the selection 100% correct...?

UK gamers recently voted for the best PlayStation games of all time and the results were published in the 50th issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine. The poll was conducted to celebrate the brand name's 15th anniversary and as you can see, Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has claimed the top spot. It was apparently a very close race between this masterpiece and the original Metal Gear Solid but the point is, Uncharted 2 takes the top spot.

Obviously, we're talking about three full generations here, so it can be tough to pick. Personally, I'm a little surprised that Vice City easily outstripped GTAIII (but I would make the same selection), and I'm also surprised to see RDR and SotC on there. I would've liked to have seen Final Fantasy X, one of the God of Wars, and Twisted Metal: Black, but hey, that's me. Said Ben Wilson, Editor of Official PlayStation Magazine:

wait please , I just cant trust this kind of survey because in general people would like what they remember MOST so most people will include newly released games and this may also explain the total absence of Gran Turismo beside a lot of other game like Crash Bandicoot for example
and please can somebody tell me where is GOW from all that??????????

Sorry people. UC2 is amazing, no doubt. But to me, it's still not the masterpiece that is FFVII. I have yet to play a game that impressed me with its story and gameplay as much as FFVII. UC2 and GoW2 have both come rather close, same with Mass Effect 2. But FFVII is not 3rd. It's first. (Hell, I'd probably have to put it into another league. lol)

I say good for UC2 but it's all subjective... I don't think COD 4 MW deserves to be on that list but clearly many UK "gamers" do.

I rarely ever pay attention to these lists though sometimes I see a game maybe I haven't played and it provokes me to give it a try.

100% agreed. I also am always wondering why these types of surveys aren't opened up to the public and everyone is allowed to give their input. This particular one may have been but earlier last month I believe, Sony sent out a survey to "select" gamers in NA. What's that about?

You still haven't play Uncharted 2? Are you kidding me? But yeah, No SH is a big miss and also Tomb Raider 1 had to be there. I know that the franchise has gone down the gutter but, the first one is got to be the most epic gaming of its time, the levels were gigantic and everything about the game was great for its time. It was back then what Uncharted 2 is to me now... Just saying :)

I know, I know. I'm ashamed of myself too. But seriously every time I want to pick this game up it seems like something happens. Bike needs a valve job and a seal replacement, truck blows its head gasket, have to fly to Miami for family reasons, computer takes a nose dive and have to buy hard drive mobo and cpu. I can't win for losing when it comes to getting a hold of this game.

Yep, started this morning and already can tell is going to be amongst my favorites of all times.
I love this from the foreword: "Unafraid of the odium of appearing too meticulous, we are much more inclined to the view that only thoroughness can be truly entertaining"
Thinking about it, that could be applied to the work done in Uncharted 2 :)

Coverton: Ain't life a bi*** sometimes? I was half way through MGS4 and my HD died and I lost all my saves, this is the game that came with my PS3 when I bought it and I still haven't been able to finish it...

Ben: I almost feel ashamed of reading it on the subway. This is the kind of book to read while sitting comfortably so you can give it full attention but, my life right now is just too crazy and time is not on my side. I'm trying to get as far as I can before my eye surgery next week...

I'm an Uncharted fan. Loved the first game, and uber-luved the second. Its got everything. Such excellent humour, such cinematic expansiveness, great characters, good control, great plot. Really is a cut above the rest.

What?! At least one God of War HAS to be there! GoW 1 raised the bar for all games when it came out, Gow 2 was a masterpiece, and GoW 3 has arguably the best graphics of any game EVER, not to mention it has the ultimate EPIC playthrough of any game( I'll admit the story could have been told a little better)

I just can't and probably will never name one game that's the greatest of all time.

I mean what does it take to make it to the list? Sales? Technical achievements? Revenue/Income? Rating? History? Gameplay? Story? Combination of some? It's too much to think about.

I think it's due to the lack of universal appeal in those games. I like them a lot, but not everyone is a fan of the racing sims.

I thought the same thing, but as 556pineapple said, racing sims are not as universal appealing as Action and Shooting games.

The day Gran Turismo makes the greatest game of all time list is probably the day Gran Turismo wins the game of the year award. The chances are similar.

I think you have to wait a little bit longer before making that kind of statement. It's hard to really remove nostalgia from the equation. Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent game, you just need to give it time to see where it settles compared to the rest. That's just me though.

Great list! Only one I haven't played on it.

I'm going to go with "Metal Gear Solid" as the best Playstation game ever.

I distinctly remember playing through that game and savouring every bit of playtime with it. As the credits rolled after its completion, I thought to myself, "This was the best game I have ever played."

Second place for me would be "Resident Evil 2", followed by "Resident Evil 1". (in case anyone cares... haha)

the trouble is everyone is different, to be honest since this was a uk poll, am surprised pes 6 wasnt on that list, pes ruled the roost on the ps2 and i didnt know anyone who didnt have that game,

all good games on the list obvs evryone opion is gunner be different and often more recent games get put on the list as they tend to have better graphics etc, am just glad MW2 wasnt on the list.

Great game but the best? Nope.

Like I've said before, I honestly enjoyed the first Uncharted more than the sequel and to me, no game has ever been better than Metal Gear Solid besides maybe the fourth MGS game. A close second would be Shadow of the Colossus.

A list that probably had a few thousand votes too. Hardly concrete.

And that list is all sortsa wrong...and the mags description of U2 is even more wrong, hence why i disagree!

I never pay attention to these best of lists in any format, really. They're just silly and dramatic.

Also, This generation is more fresh on the minds so you'll see newer games there more....especially as the age group that voted (considering the mags readers) is pretty young.

You have to also remind yourself of less commercial games that many might not of heard of, but are still unbelievable such as Demon's Souls, Exhumed, Dark Chronicle, Alundra etc.

See, too many factors invade such lists. The strongest one being personal opinion.

Off topic, Castlevania demo is GREAT! I dislike GoW type games, but this one got me! Great music, story, theme and acting.

In terms of production and presentation I've never played a better game. While I can't say TPS pop 'n fire is my personal favorite style of play, the quality speaks volumes. The game is better than polished and it embodies top quality elements in every conceivable way.

And to put it another way.
..If aliens from outer space came and abducted me and asked for me to produce humanity's greatest achievement in video game design I would pick Uncharted 2. Then hopefully they'd avoid using any probes on me =p

Lol! I also imagine mentioning Halo or Gears might have the opposite of the desired effect. The whole bloody planet might get sterilized (like the Krogan by the Salarians as eluded to in ME2) for teaching our youth how to deal with foreign interstellar nations through primitive combat sims.

I hate these lists. They're so damn subjective. I mean, sure, there's usually a couple titles that really do deserve to be there, but some titles I look at and go, "re.... real.... really?"

Just goes to show that personal taste plays a BIG part. My greatest highlight of the PS2 for me was Dragon Quest 8, for example. I also hold in high regard Okami, and Gran Turismo series. PS1 was so incredibly revolutionary that I'm shocked not to see more from it.

Anyways, I think my tastes are fairly different than the average person, so that's why I typically despise these lists.

I would think if it was a reflection of popularity or sales, Uncharted 2 and Shadow of the Colossus would't even be listed. And if it were a reflection of quality, than one would think KZ2 would've made it there before MW1 would've. Not a perfect list, but i'm glad a certain number of games made it.

That last part about describing U2 made me think of the Metal Gear series more. U2 was great but I'm still convince the Metal Gear series as a whole is shear perfection.

FFVII will always be my "one" favorite game. Naughty Dog said they had much better grasp on the system after U1. Square Soft didn't even have a background in CDs going into FFVII.
In the end these list are always subjected to opinions... so lets just go play video games.

5.Final Fantasy VII
6.Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
7.Metal Gear Solid 4
8.Silent Hill
9.Shadow of the Colossus
10.Gran Turismo 4

It's damn near impossible to do one of these lists. All the games I just listed and some I did not list could be considered my favorite game of all time. As I did my list I came to the conclusion there is not one top game of all time, but many.
You cannot rank truly epic games!

In some aspects i would agree however MGS4 was the only game that made my jaw drop from start to finish besides FFVII.

Uncharted 2 had its moments but it ended far to quick for my tastes and just wasn't as awe inspiring as the MGS4 and FFVII.

I'm sorry but I totally reject this. I'm not knocking it, UC2 is great, it's a lot of fun but it's no masterpiece. Like the films and tradition it's based off, the same thread that Indiana Jones is, it's just a lot of fun.

There's plenty more of substance available in the long history of playstation.

These lists are mostly good to ignore. But for the most part they got good games in there.

Great to see MGS1 second, that game is just downright perfect.

UC2 is just beautiful. It's everything one can ask for in a v-game.

Demon's Souls should have taken a place somewhere in there. Definitely better than Call of D00ty and Red Dead

this top 10 list does not make sense.(no GOW? no ICO? no Chrono? no Demon's Souls? etc) honestly, it is very hard to decide the best one over the rest, therefore, instead of that methodology, i choose to use best or most favorite games, not in any order or priority, which to me, makes more sense.

I see those list as a guide of what I should buy or at least rent. I don't believe on the term "best game ever" since more than 50 games I have played could deserve that title.

'Among Thieves' is awesome, to be sure, but saying it's the greatest PlayStation title EVER? I don't know that I could ever let myself go that far.

All the major 'Metal Gear Solid' titles, 'Final Fantasy VII', 'VIII' & 'X', 'Shadow of the Colossus', just about any 'Gran Turismo', 'Heavy Rain the 'God of War' series, 'Dragon Quest VIII', 'LittleBigPlanet', 'Valkyria Chronicles', 'Vagrant Story', 'Chrono Cross', 'Demon's Souls.'
I'm not saying all of those are definitively better than 'Among Thieves', but those are just the titles that spring to mind when I think about the best PlayStation games. Pretty stiff competition, if you ask me. And I'm just not ready to crown such a recent title better than all the others.

Still, things like this are undoubtedly good for the game, since it still hasn't sold as much as it deserves, despite it's three and-a-half million or so in sales.

I don't know the Japanese voice actors seem way better in Metal Gear Solid.1st Metal gear solid was also good in english.but 2,3 and 4 david hayter's voice was not good.
Hideo Kojima only said that for the 1st one and the 1st one had very good voices in the Jap version.
Akio Otsuka is perfect for Snake's voice.
All the Japanese voice actors are giving thier voices to Castlevania LOS.But this time Castlevania english version will have great voice actors so will play both and see.
Did u guys see the new story trailer for castlevania.Tell me if their voices are not good.

PS and PS2 had too many great games to say Uncharted 2 is the best ever. It was awesome but i enjoyed a ton of other games as much.

Its easy to pick your favorite game out of a series but not for a certain console. Just way too many games in different genres to enjoy to say its the best playstation game ever.

Uncharted 2 was an awesome game. Just hope we have more awesome games for the PS3 in the future.

I agree it had a lot more weak points than the other two games but i had more fun playing the game. The combat was way better in 3. Had many many more "oh sh!t" moments too.

i wouldn't agree with no. 9 and 10 but overall its very close to what i would say.
and yes UNCHARTED 2 is the best game of all time.

Modern Warfare, Red Dead Redemption and Resident Evil 4 are all fantastic games in their own right, but are they really worthy of all time top 10 PlayStation games?

Whare are God of War, Gran Turismo, Heavy Rain and ICO? And while Killzone 2 wouldn't make my list of top 10 of all time, one does feel it was an overall better experience that Modern Warfare, no?

UC2 is definitely a great game, maybe the best on PS3, but not best Playstation game overall. I'm still for FFVII.

I thought it was really weird seeing Red Dead Redemption there. It was on Playstation, but not really what I would consider a "Playstation game" when doing a survey like this.

I'm sure there were a lot of youngin's voting there that never even played a PS1.

This list is a classic format:

A mix of genuine old gems, and new releases which people are enjoying now.

This is not to say that I don't agree with some of the list, but again, it is all just opinion. Seriously, Red Dead? Resi IV? And 3 of the 4 MGS. Nah, not buying it. There have been thousands of amazing games ever made.

i like this list. its realistic, as mw2 did not make the list. i of course luv resident evil 4, call of duty 4, and my personal open world favorite red dead redemption.
but no matter how many groundbreaking games may be released in the coming years, metal gear solid 3 snake eater will ALWAYS be my favorite game of all time. its an old favorite.

I'm glad to see Uncharted 2 get the respect it deserves, because all personal opinions aside it was one of the greatest games and there is no denying it...

Although it's not a PLAYSTATION beloved game to me (because its glitches on PS3 compelled me to buy it on the 360), where the HELL is Fallout3, especially GOTY edition? It's still my favourite game of the current generation.

Resident Evil 4 is when the series started to become more of action game. I personally liked Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil:Code Veronica the best out the series.

I call bunk on this list. PlayStation is not another word for video games, and by doing a best "PlayStation" game list, I think you have to trim the fat by excluding all multiplatform releases. By including multiplat games like Modern Warfare or its sequel, I think you're really taking a dump on the first and third party dev teams that built the game using only the Ps3s architecture. I may have not liked the experience that Killzone 2 gave me, but it's technical achievements outweigh both Infinity Ward and Treyarchs on the Ps3 console. Same with Resident Evil 4, which was a port of the GameCube game. It's dismissive of the teams that brought us Onimusha and Devil May Cry, both of which were PlayStation exclusives for the most part during the last generation. I play a lot of games, and a lot of those games are multiplatforum, but I've never considered them the best of the best of PlayStation games.

I also think focusing on this generation of games is unfair to the history of the PlayStation brand, ultimatley making a "best PlayStation EVAR" list an impossibility.

In my opinion, you'd have to break it into three generations of gaming and a side section for the PSP, and then break it down into genres, all the while trying to remain as objective as possible and leave opinions out of it as much as one can.

That's how I would've done it, anyway.

No, not at all. Everyone has opinions and if your opinion is that Resident Evil 4 is a better game on the PlayStation 2 than any of the games in the Onimusha franchise, who am I really to argue that point?

What I'm saying is that if I were making a list called "The Best PlayStation Games" I would try to push my opinion away, tell it to shut up, and judge the games on their own merits. I would also remove any and all multiplatform games and ports from other consoles to focus on the games created just for the PlayStation consoles, as those tend to be the sort of games that make the console shine.

If I made a list based solely on my opinions, I'm sure it would get a lot of laughs as Jaws Unleashed would be on the list somewhere. the game was complete shambles, sure; glitchy as hell, yes; craptacular, most certainly. But the fun I had swimming around as a ginormous great white shark eating whaterver I wanted has been permanently burned into my memory banks. It was so much fun, but it wasn't a good game, let alone one of the best.

does that make sense?

Man its hard to pick a top 10. Uncharted 2 was an epic game but theres so many other amazing games that would be top. God Im glad I've been a part playstaion fot the last 13 years.

p.s would there be any psp games in your top 10?

I don't like this survey. Uncharted 2 does have the best graphics and game play ever, but you just can't beat the classics. RDR should not be on there, don't get me wrong I loved it but it's not one of the PS's best. COD4:MW was a very fun game, I put so many hours in to it, but it is not in the top 10. One or two of the Gran Turismo's should be up there. The Crash bandicoots and Twisted Metal as well. And GOW should differently be in the top 5 and all MGS belong, they are amazing(Rising is dumb).

I think for me, stories were what won my heart.. That's why my list consists of:

Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, 3, 4
Final Fantasy
Uncharted 2
God of war 1
Fahrenheit
Heavy Rain
Deus EX
etc.

Other mentions that won my heart with game play and somewhat originality are:

Crash Bandicoot 1,2,3 and CTR
LittleBigPlanet
Odd world Abe's Odyssey ;D
Lego Star Wars 1 and complete saga

There are many more games, I love for it's gameplay, stories etc. :D

But at the end of the day, everyone's different :)

depends what your judging them by.
if your judging by technological masterpiece and epic action sequences, than definitely uncharted 2, even over GOW3.
but if your judging by how much fun said games are to play U2 falls way off the mark!
the original crash bandicoot was, and always will be my favorite game of all time!
nothing can change that!
R&C a close second, than syphon filter 3rd.

GT is great, had allot of good times with it, especially when me and my father spent all weekend together trying to get our A license.
great times!
but not allot of people are into racing sims, too finicky and can get really frustrating at times.
allot like ninja gaiden, allot of people hate that series because its so hard.
me i love it because its so technical, you have to really time everything not just go masher on the buttons AKA bayonetta, GOW or many other action games.
