GT5 Delayed Again, Will Still Hit "This Holiday Season"

Well, at least it can still be a big holiday title but even so...this probably won't go over well.

We were first told the next issue of Game Informer wouldn't feature the Gran Turismo 5 review because the game "had been delayed in the US." We started to hear similarly depressing things from across the pond in Europe and now, it has been confirmed at the PlayStation Blog: GT5 will not make its supposedly written-in-stone launch date of November 2 in North America. The silver lining is that it can't be a very long delay, as they say the hotly anticipated simulator "will be coming this holiday season." As posted by SCEA producer Taku Imasaki:

"We sincerely apologize to GT fans for the delay, however, creator Kazunori Yamauchi and the team at Polyphony Digital want to make certain they are creating the perfect racing experience, and we are confident that this ambitious game will exceed expectations when it launches."

Exceed expectations? At this point? That might not be possible. Anyway, we've also heard the new date should arrive on our doorstep before October is out, so stay tuned. If it comes out in December, maybe that isn't a bad thing...we can't really think of anything huge for that month, and it removes GT5 from November, where Call of Duty: Black Ops and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood can reign.

Still...it's not exactly good news.

GT5 will be the perfect holiday gift then
but i hope Assassin's creed gets good sales, i could care less about cod since its always going back and forth between different teams so its not the same quality each time

to be honest this is a very ambitiuos title, that encompesses every aspect of racing, from traditional racing to darfting and everything else in between, while at the same time trying to get everything as accurate as a video game possible could being a simulation.on top of that with 1080p output and the best graphics this side of uncharted 2 and crisis, you guys understand this is a VERY HUGE undertaking for any game dev to accomplish.while nothing perfect, these guys are trying to get close to it.there not willing to put out some buggy garbage that will piss off 15million fans of the series.delays can be a pain in the ass, but a broken product is far worst then any delay i can think of. and with all the content thats packed in this game your likely to be playing gt5, for years to come.if they can get this just right this well go down as one of the greatest games ever made.a game thats everything to a genre has never been done before.

Um, well, for all those who say that there's only one delay, let's just completely forget that something like 16 months ago a spokesnerd for Polyphony digital uttered a phrased that could be rightly interpreted as suggesting the product would launch imminently. If I remember correctly, they said something along the lines of "we can release any time now". So no, no actual official dates were given and broken before, but statements were made and twice it seemed from these statements that the game would finally launch only for us to then be told that it required more tinkering before release. So, yes, only one delay - technically - but in reality this is at least the third time we've had a reasonable anticipation of the game being released only to be told it's not ready yet.

Personally I am extremely sick and tired of the delays. I remember writing over a year ago about how we all recognize their struggle for perfection, but suggested that they should get the game actually launched and patch perfection into it after launch. Here we are again...oh, but only one delay... ::rolls eyes::

Personally, I already have a collector's edition pre-ordered, so it will arrive when it arrives, in the mean time, Criterion has a nice little racer coming out on Nov 16, Need For Speed Hot Pursuit. I'll be getting that, as will my wife (she got addicted to racers thanks to Burnout Paradise). I guess that GT5 will arrive whenever it does, but I'll tell you this, if NFS Hot Pursuit is even half as good as Burnout Paradise was, GT5 will have to enter super pursuit mode to catch it.

@Jawknee,

5 years? PS3 will be 4 in about two and a half weeks. So, I'm not so sure we can say 5 years can we? Although they have been working on it for at least 5 years since we know that they started working with the PS3 long before it was a realized physical product.

But seriously, I WAS kind of annoyed that my most anticipated game was coming out 4 days before my wedding. Now, when it releases, I'll have at least SOME time to play it, albeit on a crappy SDTV, since me and my fiancee are flat broke.

I don't mind. I want them to do the best possible job they can and if they need a few more weeks, so be it. I'd rather support a developer like this than ones who rush their games out with bugs and glitches. An extra coat of polish is always welcome.

Just a general queston or 2 as I'm not a game creator, but how much can they get done in a few weeks ( assuming its out before year end) that will improve the whole game? What is the lead time from when Yamauchi and co say the game is final, to when it will be in stores?

I have no plans on geting GT5 but I feel real bad for my friend, he just sent out an e-mail to me and everyone he knows complaining about this, it was probably the longest F-bomb rant I have ever seen. Im talking about 7 paragraphs filled with F-bombs!.

Seriously, i don't see the big deal. If Polyphony wants a few more weeks to fine tune their master piece then good for them. I wish more developers were this dedicated to their fans. He knows we want the game and he wants to give it to us in the best possible form. I have been waiting for Saves the Day to release their newest record that was supposed to come out a year ago. No biggie, the more time they take, the better it will be. :)

F1 2010 should be arriving in the mail today (hopefully), and in all honesty I was wishing I had more time to really get into it before GT5 comes out. One month is a fairly short time for me when it comes to racing games. I just hope they're serious when they say it will come out THIS holiday season.

Color me disappointed. I'm just wondering why Polyphony Digital announced a November 2nd release date if they couldn't absolutely, 100% commit to it. This leaves me wondering when the new release date will actually be. Typically, blockbuster games don't actually release in December, because there isn't enough time to maximize sales before Christmas. Late November then? Not sure........ I don't want to alarm anybody, but Kotaku asked Sony whether 'holiday 2010' could encompass early 2011. They decided not to comment.

I'd recommend not looking to Kotaku for info, if you are a Sony fan. Kotaku it generally anti-PS3 (except for maybe Stephen Totilo), so when they are asking Sony if early 2011 is still part of the holiday window, then they are most certainly looking for ammo to put a negative spin on things.

Oh that's OK. We'll be playing it for years. I'm still addicted to RDR and Joe Danger. The kids can't stop playing LBP. And every now and then I try to get a little further in Resistence Fall of Man (Yeah I know, go ahead and laugh) So GT5 can take it's time gettin' more perfect because I don't want my PS3 to melt due to over activity. Then there's Fallout New Vegas... There's too many games too little time.

PS. Bring us Medieval III!

Well, Well, Well. This helps me big time now i can get Wrestling and The Sims on October 26 like i planed with out waiting a week for GT5 to come out. as for november gaming i'll wait and see. GT5 better come out soon. but on the other hand why do i got a funny fealing that delay is not something minor but there maybe big news on that other system. *cough back door dealings cough*

I am extremely disappointed in the new delay. Normally, I don't care too much when a game is delayed, but this game is special to me.
I even pre-ordered TWO Collector's Editions (one for my brother). I guess I can give my brother this game as a Christmas present now...

Dude...this bites. The PS3 hasn't come out with a hot exclusive in months! First I see my pre-ordered LittleBigPlanet 2 get delayed. Now I see my pre-ordered Gran Turismo 5 get delayed.

Holidays are wicked, all number games here. Lets hope all these decisions "exceed" expectations and PS3 numbers shoot out through the roof.

I know it will be worth it, but you've got to work with us a little Yamauchi. If we can't trust you to stick to a date after 5 years how can we expect much of anything else from you?

@Ben and big6. I would agree that Kotaku is not the most reliable of sources, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that they are anti-Sony/Gt5. The site is run by a multitude of journalists and as such they're all going to have different console/genre preferences. Heck, they wrote a very favorable preview of Infamous 2 the other day....Anyway, I digress. The point I really want to make is that Sony are really going to have to think carefully over the new release date, considering that GT5 is the only major exclusive left for 2010 ( 2011 is chock- a-block with releases)

Enslaved really is awesome, and Fallout New Vegas should be pretty good, and if you are into games like Oblivion, Gothic 4 is coming for the 360 and the PC and looks like it has some potential awesomeness hiding in it. Oh, and if you just have to have a racing fix then F1 2010 will probably give you enough of a hold over until GT5 releases.

ETA: And let's not forget that they didn't flat out say it would be pushed out of November if I am reading the news correctly. It isn't likely but this could still release a week or two after expected which would put it in the second half of November.

I really think they should have worked a year or two on everything from GT4 and put it out there, which would have been amazing during launch days of PS3. GT4 could run at 1080I on PS2 so not much work needed.

GT5P is a great enough game to keep you occupied for the delays, and its quite cheap :P

The only good thing about this delay, is that GT5 is no longer coming out on the same day as the new Wheel of Time book (Nov 2nd). I just recently noticed they were releasing on the same exact day. So, yeah, that solves my problem of figuring out what I do first ;)

i'm gutted because i have the sig edition on pre-order and now i have no idea when i'm gonna have to drop £150 on it. might cancel pre-oreder get the standard edition and us the rest on some other new games, but i'd be gutted if i didnt get the sig edition and it's another 5 yrs before GT6. The one thing hate about this delay is its not got me in a position of re-thinking my purchase which is never good.

To me, GT5 has always come across as a title that will be worth the wait. From what I understand, Kazunori Yamauchi is also a perfectionist, so I guess this is not entirely unexpected. Hopefully, they will still make the release for the 2010 holiday season.
At least they are not "electing" to delay the release by 6 months due to a "business decision between partners". ;)

I know one guy at the office that was PISSED when I told him the news. He stood in the middle of the office yelling and tearing up his "___ many days until GT5" paper.

I stayed quiet. I was in fear for my life. I mean really, it's just a driving game. It's not like they announced they'd done away with turn based jrpgs or something.

It's fine. This is a dedicated team, you'll thank them when you see how beautiful this game looks in your TV.

I've played the demo, it's such a beautiful experience. You could almost taste the smoke/dirt.

I can't freaking wait! In the meantime I'll be playing the RPG of the year: White Knight Chronicles.

well heres to hoping that it comes out in time for holidays, that was the only game im picking up this year and is to hold me over till Killzone 3 and LBP 2.

i know i know there is Castlvania, vanquish and enslaved to buy, but im not spending $70 on a game i can beat in around 10 hours and has little replay value, so those can wait till i can get them for cheaper.
all these delays though are pissing me off, almost every blockbuster is already pushed back to early 2011, which in my opinion is pretty stupid on the publisher's part.

ah well, here is to hoping uncharted 2 gets some new DLC (coop?) and Battlefield Bad company 2 get its Vietnam add-on.

... Man... ughh... I was really looking forward to the Nov. 2 release date. I have been counting down for months. I Respect there decision and by the way Nov. 2 was there first release date set in stone, they only pushed back the release date once. Some people...
I now GT5 is going to be amazing, and people at poly are all perfectionists, but even so I have a feeling this is going to hurt sales big time, this is a GOTY candidate and in my book is going to win it and should. I wish the people out there would understand and respect the people at poly.
I hope it still makes it out before November is out, I will wait, like we have a choice, only an idiot will cancel there order, crap I hope I didn't give anyone any ideas. I'm pretty sure it will make a Nov. release. This game will sell systems, and many of them. there are people who have been waiting to get a PS3 because of this game isn't out yet.
I'm not angry like most, I can imagine. because I now I am going to get perfection

I believe it's alright for it to be delayed, it's just that since it is delayed again, no matter how professional and sincere PD's response is, they lose a bit more trust from their very hardcore fans (I'm not mentioning just the ones here), along with GT5 basically giving, at the very least, its thunder, to AC:Brotherhood and COD:Black Ops.

If it actually released with no delays, it would've sold a lot more than it would've in its (again) now delayed state, as the Nov. 2 release date was practically god's blessing to the many Hardcore GT fans; it was the first time the game would come out officially, and it would have sold its full potential if it wasn't delayed.

I'm not saying that it won't sell well, it will sell well, I know that. It's just that I think GT5 won't have legendary sales like its predecessors, which sold at least 10MIL when they released (GT4 sold 10M, and GT3 sold 15!). I think GT5 will sell more like around 7-8MIL, but I hope I'm wrong.

I'm actually waiting for that moment to happen, it's just that this is my view from a realistic standpoint.

WTF!? I'm more confused than angry. I can deal with a delay, as it only serves to give me more time to get through my current backlog, but it is still frustrating. *sigh* Ah well, as long as it is as flawless as it gets upon release. I think we should start looking forward to GT6... GAH!

The holiday season doesn't end on Dec 25th. for most people the Holiday season extends to early January. So will we see this game during 2010, or has it snuck into 2011? I mean they're not even specifying that it will arrive during 2010, only that it will arrive this holiday season...Whatever that actually means.

This is ridiculous! EVERY single time they've give us a release date it's been pushed back. All because of Kazunori Yamauchi and his OCD issues! Get over it Yamauchi, it's NEVER going to be at the level of perfection you want it to be. Just release it already and be done with it. You could have released it 2 years ago and had GT7 out by now. Unfreakinbelievable. After all the lies Yamauchi has told, I seriously doubt any "holiday release" date, at least not for this year. I'll believe it when I'm in the store, standing in the checkout line waiting to pay for it.

I'd totally bust up laughing if they announced the death of JRPG's. They are honestly nearly my least favorite genre ever. But more power to you and all of those that love them, just not my cup of tea.

@TheHighlander,

I sent Sony an e-mail asking for their justification of this and the exclusion of North America for the Signature Edition and everyone but Japan's exclusion for the GT5 PS3 Racing Pack. I got a reply basically saying that their business is not my business and that's all that they could divulge without giving away company secrets.
