DNF Campaign Is "Huge," 3x The Size Of Last CoD

With multiplayer dominating the world of shooters, those who prefer to play alone have only one question these days: "how long is the single-player campaign?"

For some time now, many have noticed that games with an emphasis on multiplayer tend to skimp on the single-player; after all, a studio only has so much money and resources. But it seems you needn't worry about the above question in regards to Gearbox Software's Duke Nukem Forever. According to what Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford told CVG, the hugely anticipated game will not only be a "big, triple-A title," it'll also be long and absorbing. Said Pitchford:

"The campaign is huge. It's probably three times the size of the last Call Of Duty game. And it's great through and through.

"Any time I play I play it, at any given moment, I'm having a great time and I want to see the next moment. There's crazy set-pieces and, in that regard... if you're expecting this to be a fizzle-out, a low budget thing, you're going to be like: 'Holy sh**! Oh my God! This is no joke!'"

He goes on to say that we shouldn't expect perfection - what game is absolutely perfect? - but apparently, we'll all be "astonished" at how big it is. In fact, he says it's about "three times the size of the last Call of Duty game," which would be 2009's Modern Warfare 2. That campaign was maybe only 5 hours in length so can we assume DNF is at least 15 hours long...? Is that fair?

Well damn, we'd be happy with that.

cant see myself spending $60 bucks for 15 hours. unless the game just blows me away with awesomeness and coolness i will just wait for the price drop all games seem to get a few months down the road. even then i want to see reviews and what not first. 13 years to make the game it better be huge.

Um...a lot of games are less than 15 hours. Even some of the best in existence, like Uncharted 2.

To be fair Ben he mentioned that he would purchase a game with less than 15hrs of gameplay if it was amazing (Uncharted2).

no offense Ben but it seems your only responding to my first sentance.

ok and if no one read what i wrote right after that i said unless the game blows me away with awesomeness and coolness i will just wait. Unchated 2 offered me not only a long single player but a kick ass co-op. no one seemed to understand this next sentance to my statement. God of War 3 was not very long but its epic and full of awesomeness.

i dont care much for standard multiplayer so even if this has that i wont care much. i have burned myself to many times buying games at $60 that didnt offer my moneys worth.

Jawknee said he paid $13 for the new medal of honor and isnt that happy with it. imagine if he had paid the $60 out of pocket plus tax.

it is still to early for me to decide on this game but there are games that offer me more than 15 hours of play. if it has other reasons to buy it other than a long single player than i will be more interested. its been 13 years the game could be a giant mess or it could be great.

Thank you Limited you seemed to get what i meant in my statement, which uncharted 2 i did get right away at $60

Dude, just wanted to say that the new Medal of Honor campaign is flipping short. 4-5 hours max. I will be watching my pennies more closely than ever when it comes to games and their length.

I might pick up the game if it comes with something fancy to pre-order it or maybe a collectors edition other than that I might wait to pick it up

Sounds great, and Duke 3D had some of the best and most entertaining level designs compared to the Dooms and Quakes.

I really expect no less from the Duke. I gotta say, even after all this time I'm starting to get hyped again.

It seems to me this statement is part of the hype and their marketing stunt...

However, I welcome a FPS longer than 5 hours

But all this hype train they're putting out kind of worries me, I mean seeing how we've already been strung along for 13 years now so far.

Finally a FPS that caters to the single player crowd. I'm tired of all these multiplayer FPS with filler single player campaigns that offer very little gameplay.

Ben you forgot one thing though, SP campaigns suffer this gen due to that one thing... oh yeah DVD! If this follows the Duke3D formula the MP maps will be taken straight out of the SP, which means less wasted space on the disc.

Is "3x CoD's campaign" saying a whole lot? I've never played CoD but I remember reading complaint after complaint of how short it was. It was made with only Xbox in mind so forgive me for being extremely skeptical about it.

Well obviously Pitchford just doesn't get it now does he? He's still stuck in the mid 90s thinking people buy an fps for a long sp campaign. FPS are almost exclusively bought for their online component. The better it is, the more it sells.

If this clown knew anything about an fps he'd have bragged about DNF's epic online gameplay. But he's not. Which leads me to believe his game will be nothing more than a sp flash in the pan.

Or are we supposed to be impressed that they've got an hour of campaign for every year of development?

How much longer will the SPs be marginalised? SPs are poeple too. The emphasis on multiplayer has me shuddering and thinking of all the "reality" shows that are bombarding the tv networks now.

i think the only good time to pay for a game with less than 10+ hrs of campaign is if the campaign has amazing levels that you can go back and play and not feel like a chore. Not gnna lie some of uncharted levels felt like a chore. Just a few though. ON the other hand i love halo not a fanboy though and about 2/3 of their levels feel like a chore to go back and play. Maybe not so much in halo reach but u all get what im saying.

I'm starting to not buy games that i don't hear good things about the campaign. Developers are losing their touch for an emotional story nowadays. Now its just go kill this fag and do it again.

Dude, if you're going to nag about long solo play, you're effing NUTS! I'm digging this game the more I read about it and I'm a guy who long abandoned fps games. This game can't be as imperfect as it's MS DOS ancestor! Haha... Either way, it's been a while since I've submerged myself in something humorous with adult content and gory... Other than an Gta game, which never had full pixel nudity (except for that banned unlockable feature that caused all that uproar), what else really comes close to Dukes game?

Length doesnt bother me. A short games just gives me more time to try something else. Some of the greatest games ever made or either 15 hrs or less.

Well, a campaign between twelve and eighteen hours sounds just grand for a shooter. This is what I'm hoping for out of Vanquish. My interest in DNF is starting to rise on hearing this, now tell me that it's fifteen hours of goodness and not derivative, repetitive, uninspired design.
Peace.

in the words of duke himself.
"yeah, but after 12 dam years it better be!"
thats not exactly a achievement though, i mean MW2 took me around 4 hours to complete so this should last around 12.
not bad, but certainly not what i expected, i mean its been in development for over 13 freaking years!!!!!!!!!!!!

Almost shat my pants this arvo, IGN had a article saying DNF is coming to AU.
typical my luck, its only Brisbane.

They really shouldn't hype up Duke much like this. They really just need the goods in terms of gameplay videos and such. I want to hear that it has a 15-20 hour campaign for real. Not market speak. Otherwise unfortunately there mightn't be a shred to any of it.

Don't really see why it's a smart idea to compare their games' length(Dirty joke? Har har) to that of COD4 or MW2, since both those games were REAAAAALLLY short.

COD: MW2 is NO golden benchmark for a game's length - it was about 5 hours. IW/Activision might have as well skipped the story (which was ridiculous) and kept the MP element.

If it was 3X the length of Borderlands, it would definitely be more impressive. But either way it's still a day one purchase for me.

Also waiting on the PC fanmade remake of the original using the Unreal 3 Engine that has just been given the go ahead approval.
