September NPD: Industry Slides, New Halo Dominates

The comprehensive numbers are gone but at least we can still get a bird's-eye view of the industry.

The NPD Group has released the industry results for September and true to their warning, it is devoid of specific hardware and software numbers. It does, however, tell us that overall hardware sales fell 19% to $383 million, and software sales slid 5% to $655 million. The report also noted that $614 million of those sales came from console and handheld software, which means PC software only tallied $41 million for the month of September...times have certainly changed, haven't they?

Anyway, it should be little surprise to anyone to learn the Xbox 360 was the top console last month; a little clue as to why can be found on the software chart, where Halo: Reach dominated (3.3 million copies sold thus far). However, even with the new blockbuster, non-PC software fell 6% overall. Here's a look at the software top 10 for September:

  • 1. Halo: Reach (360) - Microsoft
  • 2. Madden NFL 11 (360, PS3, PS2, Wii, PSP) - Electronic Arts
  • 3. Dead Rising 2 (360, PS3, PC) - Capcom
  • 4. NHL 11 (360, PS3) - Electronic Arts
  • 5. FIFA SOCCER 11 (360, PS3, PS2, PSP, NDS) - Electronic Arts
  • 6. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (PSP) - Square Enix Inc
  • 7. Mafia II (360, PS3, PC) - Take 2 Interactive
  • 8. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (PS3, 360, NDS, Wii) - Activision
  • 9. Metroid: Other M (Wii) - Nintendo
  • 10. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (360, PS3, PC) - Activision Blizzard

Yes, MW2 is still on the list. The lone bright spot for September can be found in the Accessories category, as sales jumped 13% to $180 million. The NPD's Anita Frazier attributes this rise mostly to PlayStation Move, which saw each of its various pieces finish in the Top 10 for the month. By the way, Sony is plenty happy with these results.

It's good to see a PSP game crack the top 10

So you're saying that if a PS3 exclusive was out, Halo wouldn't be top? Kinda sounds like a fanboy statement. Idk, just saying...

Not sure where you think he said that. He simply pointed out that 360 hardware sold well because of an extremely popular exclusive. It's a fact, not an attack.

If the PSP wasn't hacked, and everyone wasn't pirating, we'd probably see Kingdom Hearts go up a few more. I think that its actually good seeing a psp game on the top.

That's a mighty mediocre list if you ask me, no wonder the sales slipped. So, any chance there are places where you can grab us the real numbers now that NPD has been pu*sy whipped?

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo can always release concrete numbers if they so choose. But that's about the only way, besides third-party tracking places like VGChartz.

Don't worry World. I'm sure Dante's Inferno was #11.

Dead Rising 2 ??! Unbelievable. As for overall, I'm sure it's just the calm before the storm.

And a steady flow of MW2 n00bs is always a good thing.

I was surprised at DR2 as well.

Oh well. Score Capcom 1, Gamers 0 on that one.

Wonder if the PC sales includes the digital download sales as well, seeing as how a majority of PC users have switched to downloading their software and games instead of buying physical copies as also reported by NPD a while back.

Why am I not suprised by this, especially since I have been saying this months now.

Anyhow I remember how these analyst keep saying that the game industry will be growing in 2010, however the truth is high game development cost and high prices are keeping it from any growth.

If you were to ask me personally, I would say that that the industry staring at a second/overdue crash...the vehicle for the crash this time will be high development cost. The fact the industry have been experience massive studio closures and layoffs are evidence of this.

Unless....

you check up on history. The holiday season is coming. And 2010 has been a good year already... and there's more 2010 to come.

I bet by the end of the year, PS3 will have risen over last year.

I'm not surprised that people keep re-buying a repackaged Halo 2.

Just look at how many people re-buy COD every year. If people really like a game, they'll happily re-buy the same thing every year.
