Insomniac Talks Pressure, One-Year Extension For R3

Sometimes, development is 99% pressure and pain and 1% fun. Insomniac Games, one of the premier studios in existence, knows this all too well.

Based on what creative director Marcus Smith told GamesTM, it becomes clear that Insomniac received a one-year extension for their newest project, Resistance 3, which translated to "ecstasy" on the part of every employee. Considering that Insomniac isn't really huge, Smith says that releasing Resistance 2 was quite the chore; it arrived only 24 months after Fall of Man, a deadline which is becoming more and more difficult to hit when it comes to massive AAA titles. Still, Smith seems proud of the accomplishment, despite the crunch:

"I think we’ve done a really solid job of keeping up a certain level of quality doing that, despite the time constraints."

But after R2 didn't quite have the sales numbers Sony might've expected, the decision was made to give Insomniac another year for R3. You know, people have lives outside of work and the bottom line was that this extension was absolutely necessary. Added Smith:

"Many of us now have children, and the reality of game development is that we need to maintain the quality, so something else had to change, Extending the development cycle was the way to go. It was something we were discussing from the very beginning."

Eh, don't worry Marcus. We've got Killzone 3 coming early next year so we're good if Resistance 3 shows up later in 2011. Besides, we all have confidence that Insomniac will deliver a top-notch product, right? It's what they do...sleep or no sleep.

Awesome, R2 needed some more polish and refining--some half-baked bosses, incomplete looking levels, and multi-player maps that looked sorely lacking in comparison to the single player mode. So this extra year is music to my ears.

I can partially agree Temjin,

By no means do I consider R2 a bad game but it wasn't quite as awesome as expected. I remember Gears 2 came out the same day or week and after I beat R2 I played G2 with my friend and was undoubtedly disappointed. The last boss battle, SERIOUSLY?!! But yes, another year sounds like a better idea, more time to iron out details and rough edges. The MP with R2 was before I competed online, was the MP pretty fun? What did you all think of R2?

R2 had some great multiplayer, both co-op and deathmatches. And I don't much like MP usually.

Yeah, not a bad game by any stretch. It's one of the better FPS options on the market. I just thought the quality was a little un-even and it probably could've benefited from spending a little more time in the oven.
I have high hopes and confidence in it's sequel.

Perfect, another year to catch up on the first two Resistance titles as I have yet to play them. Is there still a decent multiplayer community behind any of the titles?

I'm not sure about R1 cuz i myself never play it anymore, but R2 does have quite a few ppl playing Unranked games... Good luck getting in a decent ranked game :(

Resistance Fall of Man is the game I bought with my PS3 back in May or so. Loved it but I soon bought God Of War and got hooked. I am now hooked on Red Dead Redemption but it bothers me that I still haven't finished Fall of man. I'll get back into it soon.

I blame the children for a lot of things too, but that was a bit much. We all have day jobs despite kids at home.

Anyway, I hope they hurry up. If the only thing we've got from here to R3 is KZ3 we're in trouble.

I'm hoping R3 brings back the weapons wheel.

And I also *really* want them to bring back the 8-player co-op missions, again. That was a total blast to play, and really extended the life of the game, after completing the single-player campaign.

On a side note, the demo video of Insomniac's next R&C game was pretty cool. Finally a 4-player local cooperative game other than LBP.

I'm still slightly disappointed that it wasn't released this year. But then, the second one really felt lacking in comparison to the first and if they need an extra year to bring it back to that level of goodness, I'm fine with waiting. We must remember that they're going to have released two R&C games before this drops, so that has to have cut into the dev time.

Take your time Insomniac, but I still wanna know about this multiplat title.

It's funny how the games with relatively small development teams turn out to be the very best while tossing a hundred people onto a game to "get it done" just turns it into mediocrity.

p.s. At the advantages, they listed interesting story...wait STORY? Even though GOW doesn't need it, it is all about fun, story would be a perfect addition if it is really good. The old ones had just a nice story nothing more! This one, really good!

Actually, i didn't add last guardian as i don't know if it releases(i have a firm belief uncharted will), the same goes with rising, i am a huge mgs fan. So , if they do release, they will be bought day one. Especially rising, never lost a mgs launch, heck once i got out of the hospital just in time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!oops almost forgot yakuza 4!
