Rumor: PlayStation Phone Revealed With Complete Specs
No, it isn't the PSP2 - which has apparently been known to insiders for some time - but the oft-rumored PlayStation Phone. And it's still a rumor because some sources say this ain't real...so what else is new?
But it seems Engadget has stumbled upon a picture of the real deal; it'll actually be "headed into the market soon," complete with Android 3.0 (aka Gingerbread) and a custom Sony Marketplace that will let you buy and download games designed specifically for the gadget. The phone boasts a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 (200MHz faster than what we have in the G2), 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and the screen is between 3.7 and 4.1 inches wide. The handset features a touch-pad in the center and it even includes the familiar PlayStation shoulder buttons. Lastly, there's no Memory Stick slot, but there is support for microSD cards. The model shown in the screenshots through the link "is still in prototyping mode" and is rumored to contain a few bugs. Therefore, it may be unlikely that it'll be around for the holidays; 2011 makes much more sense right about now. Well, that's fine by us...we didn't even see it coming at all, and it still might not.
Now all we need is a release date and a price tag. The latter will be the most important, don't you think? Then again, we could use actual confirmation, too... FYI, Sony's "we don't comment on rumor and speculation" doesn't mean anything.

Since the thing is begging for a SIM card, I think it's safe to assume AT&T or T-Mobile at least in America.
EDIT: Since the thing is begging for a SIM card it's safe to assume its GSM, which rules out Sprint or Verizon, at least in America.

Wonder if it can play regular PSP games. It says it plays games specifically for the device. If it does, I'm wondering if it'll give us a preview of the PSP2's graphics.

There is one thing about these supposed "specs" that make me a little skeptical:
The device is based on Android, which is a lot more "open" compared to the operating systems that Sony has given us so far - both on consoles and handhelds.
This open-ness can lead to many issues, most troubling of which are easy homebreeding and piracy.
If the specs here are indeed real, than Sony Ericsson would have to lock out quite a few features from Andriod, which will also restrict its smartphone functionality.

Looks like Sony wants to try to take a bite out of Apple's 'casual gaming' audience. Here's 50$ on this thing playing tetris, farmville and being a social media machine and not a real gaming device.

This just seems like a pretty poor idea all the way around.

The PSP has a CPU and GPU, the memorystick memory includes a measure of copy protection. the PSP platform itself is engineered to be secure. You can't simply emulate the CPU and/or GPU, you have to emulate the entire system including the memorystick interface. That Qualcomm processor and 512MB of RAM sound great, but they may not be up to the task of emulating a CPU running at 333MHz along with the custom GPU in the PSP and it's hardware interfaces. I'm skeptical as to whether it can be done on that platform at all, but even if it can, it's very definitely a case of taking the long road to get somewhere.
It may play PS1 games, there are good emulators for that hardware, and the PS1 hardware wasn't anything like as advanced or high performance as that in the PSP.
You can't just look at the clock speed and assume that you can emulate the system. A 1GHz processor that emulates a 333MHz processor has to be able to emulate every instruction of the target processor in no more than three of it's own instructions. That's really pushing the capabilities of any processor emulation, and doesn't include the emulation of the rest of the PSP hardware.

As for this thing, it might be real, it might not. *If* it's real there are some *real* problems with it in terms of it being a PSP and a phone. It might be a PSP branded phone, it might play PS1 games, but the Qualcomm processor inside it really isn't up to the job of emulating a PSP. The absence of a memorystick interface is troubling too.
I'm saying that the prototype doesn't really look well finished, which is why it looks like one of those Chinese fake PSPs. I'm not saying it is a Chinese fake.
I just have a feeling that this is nothing more than a Sony Ericsson cellphone that is being given the PSP brand name and controls like a PSP-Go. It will probably be capable of playing PS1 titles and PSP minis downloaded from some part of the Android Market place, or a PSN marketplace of some kind. But that's about as far as it goes. It might be better to call this a PlayStation Phone, rather than a PSP cellphone. Assuming that it ever reaches the light of day.
All that said, I hate Sony Ericsson phones, they've always been crap in my epxerience, so if this is a real product, they'll have had to made drastic improvements in the quality of their design work.

For example, my friend has a dual core processor at 3.1GHz on his computer. But my triple core processor at 2.66GHz is faster, or at least makes more computations per second. In other words, mine handles more computations than his, even though, technically speaking, his computes a singular task pretty quickly.
My tech savviness isn't 100% accurate, but I think I got the gist of it there.
Basically, I'm trying to say there are a lot of factors to consider, and efficiency is one. Even if system A is faster, if system B is more efficient, it might have the better of the two processors. Like TheHighlander said in short, the PSP's processing capabilities is tailored to that specific system and is therefore faster and more efficient than an Android of higher hertz.

The Qualcomm processor is pretty good, it includes a fairly recent ARM core, and for a phone will be pretty zippy. I really hope that there is something called a PlayStation Phone that can handle the downloadable PS1 and PSP Mini games. It would be an instant upgrade decision for me, I love my Moto Droid, but I'd jump at a PlayStation Phone.

It's not a big selling feature for me, but it would be cool to only fumble between wallet and 'gadget'. (I keep my wallet in my bookbag... it's annoying to sit on a wallet for that many hours.)

I hope these rumors are false. Apple acquiring Sony would only increase the cost for us. Apple makes cool gadgets gut doesn't know how to bring them to us at affordable prices.

but if it is real what the hell for?
apple are going to walk all over this, i mean the iphone 4 has been out for over 5 months now and its still sold out country wide!
every store in the country has been getting stock every day now, stores open at 9 and by 10:30 there all sold out!
you really think sony can compete with that?
good luck!
sony, dont waste your time, just get all the kinks worked out and release the PSP2 god dam it!
sony really needs to stop focusing on what there not good at, and start focusing on what they are good at.
games, and game consoles, none of this phone, media hub bull sh*t!
just like if you want a watch you buy a rollex, just like if you want a car you buy a Ferrari, if you want a phone you buy a Iphone!
unless you want something that would last 2 months, have 1/10th of the content the apps store has added on it per week, and have the battery life of a 20 year old Motorola than maybe you could buy a PS phone.
