PlayStation Rewards Detailed, Set To Launch Spring 2011

Are you a PlayStation fan? How would you like to get a little something in return for your loyalty? I mean, besides the quality entertainment you're used to...?

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment America, LLC (SCEA) has announced a new loyalty program called PlayStation Rewards. This will give PlayStation fans in the U.S. the chance to grab "exclusive status, recognition, and rewards based on a variety of PlayStation-centric activity they engage in across the PlayStation ecosystem." It'll start as an invitation-only beta (for early adopters of PS Plus and Gamer Advisory Panel (GAP) members), which will dictate how Sony shapes the final program. Right now, they're looking at three separate reward tiers: Select, Pro, and Legendary. Members will advance through each tier based on their amount of PlayStation activity.

And how exactly does one advance?

"...including playing new games for the first time, buying content from PlayStation Network in PlayStation®Store or PlayStation®Home, downloading movies and TV shows, or engaging in communication with PlayStation like taking surveys, for example. As their status increases, so do the rewards. Members can go to their profile page and look at the reward progress meter to find their current status level and see how close they are to reaching the next level."

Everyone who participates has a shot at plenty of exclusive rewards, including PSN avatars that display member status, dynamic themes, PlayStation Home content, and chances to participate in members-only sweepstakes and giveaways. The first big reward will be an all expenses paid trip as PlayStation's guest to the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Said Susan Panico, senior director of the PlayStation Network:

"PlayStation’s most important asset is its loyal fans and PlayStation Rewards gives us an opportunity to show our appreciation for their amazing passion and desire to continually evolve the gaming world. We can’t thank our fans enough for the feedback they have given us over the years and look forward to even more dialog to help us evolve PlayStation Rewards to make it the best possible loyalty program it can be."

Right now, the public launch of PlayStation Rewards is scheduled for Spring 2011. Plus is one thing; this is quite another, and a great way for fans to increase the level of their relationship with their favorite brand. For even more info, visit the PlayStation Blog.

Well, I'm a GAP member and a PS+ subscriber, so as long as Canadians can also take part in this, I SHOULD get a beta invite.

Sounds interesting but I don't know; I've hardly downloaded anything from PS+ since I already own almost everything released so far and Qore started strong as far as freebies went but later went downhill rather quickly. I really hope that if Sony starts this up for fans, they continue to support it. They have had a horrible track-record recently as far as not supporting things goes (the earlier mentions plus PSP Go).

Why America only FFS!? Watch this europe won't get it until 2012. This is tottaly awesome btw, ONLY If it's a. compatible with previous stuff you've done, e.g the games you've bought/played, b. If the "rewards" arent just a trip to wherever, because it's always one in 37 million chance youll get it, I'd prefer a strict reward system, e.g 50 trophies net you a avatar, whereas 500 trophies gets you a free PSN game (maybe thats pushing it but w.e :P).

And unfortunately it seems to be back even more so this gen. Only these days, we call it the "entitlement" generation.

HMMMM, I think "Dire Straits" sung it best.."Money for nothing & the chips are free"

So anyway, if you want to go for every trophy, that's fine, but just realize that there are other gamers out there too, & not all of us are trophy whores.

If I get one while playing, then it's OK, but I don't go out of my way just to try getting every single trophy.

P.S. I have no problem that you like the 360. That's fine, it's the fact that you feel to need to constantly remind us about how great you are for liking both systems is what I take issue with. As if you think you are superior to the rest of us "bottom feeding PS3 only owners".

No, it's a loyalty program, so it really ought to be not only free, but reward return purchasers with freebies or discounts.

Of course, I kinda thought that was what PlayStation Plus was all about...

Had the same thought about PS Plus. I thought that program was already a way to show that you're a PlayStation fan, and that those are the ones that are going to reap benefits from doing all things PlayStation.

This rewards program make it seem like the PS Plus program is only for those that are looking into discounts, not necessarily a big PS fan, because PS Plus members would have to further prove themselves to get the benefits they're talking about.

To be fair, I think some initial points should be awarded to those that are in the PS Plus program. Also perhaps something like a 10% boost to your points on some milestones you achieve.

I adopted PS+ one week in so i'll be awaiting my email, or message via the psn, Sony.

Here's hoping it's not a 'buy this this and this and get this avatar free' kind of thing, because i wont support it at all. I already paid my dues, 10x over. Time for the brand to start paying us back.

I think this should be an even higher step up from current Plus amenities. Perks should be:
-getting to meet Kojima
-getting to meet Naughty Dog et al
-getting limited (or the original) GoW storyboards
-tours of Sony studios

Pretty confident I'll fly through the ranks fairly quickly, good to see this is being implemented. Just yesterday I was shopping on the PSN and was thinking that good PlayStation customers don't get treated any differently. Well, I guess somebody at Sony thought the same thing

This is a clever way to get people buying more stuff off of PSN. Nothing a gamer hates more than seeing that they're "n00b" or "green" or "fresh" on their home page. Many will throw money at Sony just to increase their virtual rank.

that's why i asked if it was retroactive. When I 1st bought my PS3 the store was my friend, I bought games, Home stuff add-ons themes and I bought Wishmaster when they 1st started selling movies. Now I hardly spend anything in the store, the last thing I bought was FFVII. Also, will trophies increase your rank??

It's a pilate program, like he said. Your not getting scraps. The program is in testing phase at the moment and the US just happens to be where they are testing it. Canada got discless streaming Netflix before the US did. No one complained or whined about it. You guys have services and channels the US doesn't. No on is complaining about that either. So don't worry about it. By the time it's ready to launch world wide, I'm sure it will be a much better program in general.

Yep, us Canadians got discless Netflix first. Of course, there's pretty much diddly-squat on it and all I ended up watching was two horrible B-movies entitled 'ThanksKilling' and 'Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus'. That's pretty much it, though. Canadians really get bent over furthest when it's time for a good ol' shafting. It's sad, really. Our PS Web site is NEVER updated and e-mails to Canadian subscribers are always beyond late. Hell, just this morning, I received my newsletter letting me know that the PS Store was updated... LAST WEEK! LOL! Oh, yeah! I guess I'll have to wait until November 3rd to find out what came out on the store this week.

I just find it interesting that everything is a game now.

You used to buy a game and beat it - that was it.

Now you beat the game and go back and collect all the "insert random object here", or max out all your stats/weapons/etc....and you get trophies...which also rank up in levels.

Now you get loyalty points and they've made it into a game that you also "rank up" by buying stuff we might not normally buy.

These people are geniuses - they have found every possible way to keep us playing and keep us buying.

The beta for this program starts tomorrow for current PS PLUS members but you had to be a member by the 24th of this month. it will NOT be retro-active.

Once the program is live, sign-in to us.PlayStation. c o m and go to the Forums. If you made the cut for the invitation only beta you’ll be able to see a forum called PlayStation Rewards Private Beta. In there you’ll find instructions on how to be part of the beta.

oh and they said they are looking into expanding to canada. other regions are looking into it.

No...trust me europe get the scraps a whole lot of the time..., like US getting PSN games weeks before us (cough castle crashers cough), (hell even months...cough demons souls cough) And you guys get netflix, we get BBCiPlayer...which, btw, is just a link to a page that you could already accsess on the ps3's browser. I know there's more but I can't think of them. (BTW ask anyone from Europe, they will say moreorless the same thing.) Mind you...think of the asians, they get screwed on pretty much everything, and that's where sony are based!

I have an EU and US account. You guys get stuff before we do too. It goes both ways. I can't speak for a majority of Asian countries but Japan and Korea get all the great stuff first. I really don't know what your talking about or getting this info. Really, it's not a big deal. Life isn't fair but the sun will rise tomorrow. So don't worry about. :)

I just hope they don't wipe your status clean on a whim like Square Enix rewards do. I don't think they even let us carry our points over from year to year.

Being a member at EA is cool and pays off with betas. I just hope we get some sort of credit for registering PS3 exclusive games. Cuz I tend to buy most of those. :)

This is great, no matter how mundane the rewards may or may not be. Just the fact that they reward fan loyalty in any way is indeed a great idea. Expect other systems to do the same in near future.

I'm in the beta program for PlayStation Rewards.

I just reached a new level, probably from playing newly released games, and have been given a chance to redeem my reward points.

I have three options; Dynamic Theme, PSN Avatar, or PlayStation Home item(s). I don't get to choose or even see what they are.

I'd much rather see an option for funds credited to my PSN Wallet instead. Like, $3-5 worth would be greatly appreciated.

I'll post images on the forum.
