Sony's Marks Talks EyeToy, Motion Evolution
The history of video game hardware and accessories can be quite interesting, especially when it involves the current-gen motion-sensing technology.
Over at the PlayStation Blog, Senior Researcher - and one of the main minds behind EyeToy and PlayStation Move - Richard Marks talks about a movement revolution that began quite a long time ago on the PS2. The EyeToy USB camera was the first "to translate your body movements into game controls, map your face onto in-game characters and more." Marks says they learned a lot with the EyeToy; not only in regards to how the technology could function in the future, but what gamers preferred. Said Marks:
"EyeToy helped us understand that while people definitely enjoy physical interaction and movement, they also want precise control and a simple, fast, reliable way to trigger actions. We also found that some experiences just feel more natural when holding a tool, or a 'prop.' Seven years later, we’ve introduced PlayStation Move, which we think is the ideal combination of both spatial and action/button input. We here at PlayStation are always looking for ways to enhance the gamers’ experience and we’re looking forward to the new experiences PlayStation Move will enable over the next 10 years."
I still remember when the EyeToy was introduced. Working at EB at the time, it was one of those gadgets that showed up and everyone went..."is this possible? Does this really work?" Sure, it's nothing like what we have now with Move, but every advanced technology needs a starting point, right? The question is how much further we can go...

I'm probably just dreaming but if they ever figure out a way to get 3-d tech into a pair of sunglasses..you know it's coming. The fact that someone's already thought about it is proof of that.

I think XBox will have a nice Xmas. Kids graduating from the Wii might see the Move as a bit of a horizontal upgrade, and so will the parents that would buy it for them. The Kinect on the otherhand is different, and will be the one chosen. Too bad for that, because now those youngsters will be locked into the Xbox instead of the PS3 for a few years.

Microsoft is obsessed with making Kinect look like a success regardless of it's true performance. Sony on the other hand has sold (I suspect) far more Move sets than they anticipated and already considers Move a success. But of course, the MS marketing machine is rolling now, so whatever Sony sell will be portrayed as a failure in many corners of the tech and mainstream media.

Edit: seeing how limited space is in most rooms, especially with multiple players, I can't even imagine how much kinect will fail for most users..

This is true for a retail release, but at one point the gameboy camera was going to be used to map faces into Perfect Dark on the N64. Ninty (Howard Lincoln in particular) had issue with the thought of kids shooting their friends in the face though... Who knows, maybe there were PC games that did this as well. Not to take away Sony's pioneering efforts in motion sensing.

dunno how well it would of gone, but it definitely would of been intriguing to see.
oh well, will have to lean onto kinect for that, i just hope M$ get something other than kids games for it.
ghost recon future soldier is suppose to use it, which will be interesting to see how they implement that.
