DICE 2007: SOE Announces Spy-Themed MMO
Phil Harrison wasn't the only speaker at yesterday's D.I.C.E event; Sony Pictures Entertainment Vice Chairman and Sony Pictures Digital president Yair Landau took the podium to announce an intriguing new MMO from Sony Online Entertainment. Sorry, EQ fans, this one isn't about staffs and mages and dense ancient forests loaded with fantastical monsters.
Landau showed a brief preview video on the game, and we find that SOE is stepping outside the box and planning to deliver a spy-themed espionage MMO, ala Splinter Cell. Set in the whimsical city of Prague, you take the role of the quintessential Bond-type character who has a bevy of neat-o gadgets at his disposal. The scene in the video is a hectic one; bullets flying everywhere, a kickin' soundtrack, and plenty of real-time action fun.
"We think this is going to take espionage entertainment to a new level," said Landau. "I'm a big believer in character-driven intellectual property."
Some of you may be wondering, "how the heck are they going to make a game like into an MMO?" Well, there's a whole lot of innovation planned for this title (currently unnamed), so you had best keep your mind open. SOE wants to combine the cinematic aspects of Hollywood with the interaction and community aspects of MMOs, but this does pose one last question- considering those "cinematic aspects" generally hold story elements, and story elements put a serious hurt on the open-ended "choose-your-own-adventure" gameplay found in MMOs, what exactly is the plan, here?
Well, either way, it's an original idea, and we like original ideas. Landau didn't reveal which platforms the game was being made for, but SOE is on record saying their future MMO endeavors would include the PC and PS3. That's good enough for us...for now.
