PSXE Poll Update: Not Everyone Likes Call Of Duty

All right, so I probably shouldn't have given you guys the option.

We maintain that Call of Duty: Black Ops is a great game (albeit a little lacking in the technical stability category), but the obvious entertainment factor hasn't seemed to sway the PSXE faithful. In our recent poll, despite the words of praise from critics, the majority of participators just replied, "Call of what now?" when asked what their reaction was to Treyarch's latest blockbuster. To be fair, the game seems to get run through the shredder in various forums and communities around the web and although we understand the backlash, we still say a lot of that criticism is unfair and biased. The game wasn't as polished as it should've been and the developer is already hard at work on a PS3 patch but for the most part, it's damn fun. I will say the story was better than I expected and the single-player campaign can be immensely fulfilling.

Next up, it seems we have a racing battle on our hands. Although Gran Turismo 5 is probably the favorite - especially amongst PS3 owners - there's no denying the appeal of Need for Speed, and the new Hot Pursuit game looks great. Besides, many gamers are more arcade-oriented and have no interest in simulators so in preparation for the next few weeks, we ask: which one you gonna get? Or do you just not care about the genre at all?  If so, that's fair...besides, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is almost here.  Can't wait for that one, right?

Haha... I like that result...

As for the new one, well it has to be GT5, doesn't it? I'm sure Hot Pursuit will be a grand game, but it is hardly a competition.
Peace.

P.S. Second paragraph, third line from the bottom. :D

So far, I love the SP storyline for Black Ops. Treyarch has always had the better storyline/Sp experience. I haven't encountered any of the freezing, pausing or AI issues that have been reported. I don't play MP so can't comment on the glitching. As for the poll, GT5 all the way!!!!

i was talking to my cousin about this as we both game a lot. i was looking at my game collection and realized i dont really own that many fps. ps1 games i have are gt2, ff 7,8,9 and a few other niche games. ps2 is a lot of 3rd person games, jak games, R&C games, mgs, gta, gt3, ffx... it keeps going for ps2 not a single fps. ps3 time and all i have is bioshock games, fallout games, mag and resistance 2. MAG and R2 are the closest to a CoD game i have and i never played the comp part of R2. i did a lot of the co-op though. i have never owned a CoD game and the only one i played was MW. i didnt care for it. guess if im gonna play online i would rather play MAG anyway

I always preferred Aeris to Tifa...
Call me crazy, but Aeris was like the sweetest babe ever.

She fit Cloud so well...
You could tell Cloud was more into Aeris' personality than into Tifa's, imo.

Anyway, wouldn't it be great that if they re-made FFVII that they'd give us the option to save Aeris? Alternate storyline?

THEN I'd buy it.

I rate FFVII under all FFs except XIII, but if this option was there it'd definitely pass at least FFV and VI.

I was so PO'd when Aeris died, I almost got a Gameshark so I could use that code to get her back. She was my favorite character. 1. I love mages, and 2. yeah, she was just adorable.

Oh, I didn't know you could get Aeris back. Hmmm... I might consider that. I had blocked out of my mind why I never completed FFVII in the first place, then when i replayed it on the PSP recently I got to that point again, and stopped - again. I just can't be bothered to finish the game after she's gone.

Aeris dying is one of the reasons I still rate FFVII below FFVIII.

The group itself just didn't feel the same after she died.

It was more of an emo Cloud and a "here's my shoulder" Tifa :(

The game's still solid after that and Tifa is cool overall. But it's just that Aeris was what made the game feel alive to me... (no pun intended lol!)

"Call of what now?" is more like "I know Call of Duty is a great game, but it is this franchise the reason developers think we only like that, and their argument is the sales. That's why Sega didn't bring Yakuza 3 with the hostess club, or Namco won't give us Tales, or Capcom tries to get his ResidenEvil 5 more action-y, or SE gives us a really shallow FinalFantasy."

At least, that's how I see it, and I will NEVER support a franchise that has done that.

Indeed. I suspect a lot of PSXer's will be in agreement with this. This kind of hyper success just isn't healthy for the industry. If there is one thing that could kill the industry, or at least put it into a decline for a while, it's a monoculture around Shooters. Unfortunately, that is where we are heading.

I hate to sound like a wet blanket, but you really have to start to ask yourself what it tells you about gamers. What does it say that games like COD Black Ops can sell so many copies and yet games like Heavy Rain struggle to hit 2 million, and even acknowledged powerhouses like MGS4 don't even come close to those numbers. It tells me that the population of gamers is quickly becoming dominated by the lowest common denominator.

Sad.

If there's anything I've learned while working in social services and community development, it's that intelligence and an appreciation for the arts is appreciated by nearly no one, while movies like Hot Tub Time Machine top box office sales.

In our society, there is no hope. Video game technology is 20 years too late. It barely missed a generation of folks who might appreciate the finer things in gaming.

'World At War' was my last 'Call of Duty' as of right now, and it will likely remain that way until I see something truly amazing from the franchise.

I'm not much into racers, but I loved the first 'Gran Turismo' to death, and have followed the series since. So for me, it's absolutely no competition. Put ANY racing game (heck, put any TWO) against it, and I'll still go with 'Gran Turismo 5.'

my take on black ops.
sp has the best story for a CoD yet. setpieces can be underwhelming however.
zombies is still fun, but only with friends
mp is the same as ever with many welcome changes and i will be playing it for a long time, but the hit detection and occasional lag prevent what should be easy kills and bring in many, many cheap deaths.
black ops is fantastic, but to me CoD4 is still the best CoD out there.

It's not so much the game, it's the distortion to the perceptions of the industry that such a hyper successful game causes. Games that sell a million copies were once considered a great success, and that was on the PS2 with 100+ million paying customers. Now, a game's success is measured against Call of Duty, and let's face it, no one wants to have their game's sales compared to that monster.

Let me get this straight, Ben gives a game an excellent review with only minor quibbles about the game (considering the need for a patch, he could have said more), and yet we're all kiss-asses because we vote the game down? Did it ever cross your cordite addled brain that some of us are not the biggest fans of shooters? And even if we love the genre we can still have an opinion of our own? My favorite part of this whole week revolving around Black Ops was when people got all sorts of upset about Fidel Castro's position in the game, and taking that position out of context.

When the context is applied, it makes those people getting angry look moronic. Especially considering the game's ending.

I won't be getting either racing game. I've learned to like FPS games in the past few years, but racing games aren't my thing, and I never have enjoyed them.

I played a bit of multiplayer Black Ops with my younger brother (he is a COD aficionado). I'm not going to be in denial and assert that I completely loathed the experience; it was fun. Though that doesn't change the fact that I despise the series. The Treyarch games seem a degree more vivid (MW2 was so bleak; I don't really like games with bleak environments), aesthetically speaking of course. The "I kill, I shoot, I man" apathetic brain dead paradigm is still there, irrevocably.

Tomorrow is my last exam and after that I plan to play Tombi (or Tomba I think it was called in the US). Recently my interest in cars has been rekindled, so I might sample GT5.

I'm not interested in those Call of Duty games. I was pretty sick of FPS games by the end of the PS2 era, and the thought of getting online with every hyperactive 9-12 year old on the entire planet is about as appealing to me as watching an entire season of Dancing With The Stars.

As far as racing games, simulators all the way baby! I was playing F1 2010 last night - 67 laps around Hockenheim in Germany. 100% concentration the whole way, and then it started pouring halfway through. Had to pit and switch to rain tires, then it was edge-of-your-seat excitement 'til the end. I could barely see where I was going, REALLY had to have every corner and course contour memorized; constantly pushing the car as fast as traction would allow, but you didn't know exactly how much traction there was with the varying track conditions. An absolutely intense and immensely satisfying experience! I'll remember it forever.

I just can't get into that arcade stuff where you can go around any corner at pretty much any speed, ram the other cars out of the way, maybe even blow them up LOL. It's fun for a while, but the level of challenge just doesn't hold my interest for long enough to be worth sixty bucks.

I’m giving Call of Duty a pass, in general because it mostly feels like the same thing over and over. How they rely on what if scenarios with a hollow wood movie style of action. And I really like the feel I get in Killzone 2 when you’re controlling the character with weight and detailed animation. I don’t get that in a Call of Duty game and Killzone 3 is coming out in few months, which I can wait for.I Want a game to be authentic in way, i don’t see call of duty being that. It’s just something else mainstream.

Ben, you must be hurting for ideas on the poll...NFS vs GT5, really?

That's like pitting Glass Joe against Tyson. :)

As for Call of Duty: Black Ops...I don't really know why, but I just can't get into it. Maybe my distaste for the quality of the product just keeps getting in the way. I don't know, but after the game froze on me Friday night, it's been sitting in the corner across the room and hasn't moved since I "placed" it there.

I intend on selling or trading this game while it's worth something. Maybe I'll stand outside of Gamestop and sell it to someone for $50.

I've been enjoying Black Ops. Still on the campaign and my only beef is, as has been mentioned before, the sharp-shooting of the enemy AI. It makes taking cover very frustrating when those shooting at you can hit you even when they're nowhere close, aren't sniping, and only have a small part of my body showing.

I know, right? They'll be running from right to left, firing a shotgun from the freakin' HIP, at 10 miles away, while your hand is the only thing visible, and kill you in under a second.

Meanwhile, your ally's can't hit jack, and let bad guys run past them ALL so they can kil you. Why the enemy will walk past 5 of your allies just to hit you is beyond me... What's even further beyond me, is that my allies won't stop them...

Yep. My allies' inability to offer any support against a horde of sharpshooters causes a great amount of angst when I play. They yell at me to do something while they stand there shooting at nothing. So very frustrating

See... I think if a game has a veteran difficulty, or whatever, it needs to give you more opposition. Force you to create a strategy. Give you less ammunition. Add some more enemies. SOMETHING... all CoD does is make your enemies capable of manipulating the matrix, while your allies remain on dummy Easy difficulty.

Why can't CoD force you to actually USE your allies? In BO, all they're good for is helping determine where bullets are coming from. Nothing else.

Call of Duty Black Ops Campaign is a good play and I recommend it to all gamers if you are a shooter fan. The online is entertaining but frustrating at the same time. I learned to play hardcore team deathmatch as it is much more tactical.

I check this site a few times a week for a good read and find alot of people on here have nothing but negativity when it comes to multi plat games. If Black Ops were a PS3 exclusive, then all of a sudden people here would be like '' another hot exclusive'' and say nothing but praise the game. I truly believe that.

You truly have not come to this site very often. The condition of this site is not that at all. What you find here is that people have the same expectations of multi-plats as they do exclusives.

Some of this site and it's members favorite games are GTA games, Red Dead Redemption, Assassin's Creed games, etc. etc. All multi-plats.

Now, there might be some CoD hate, for sure, as there is everywhere, but I assure you it has nothing to do with it being multiplat.

Similarly, there have been PS3 and PSN exclusives that have not been well received. I do not believe you when you say you visit regularly. Games like Haze and Last Rebellion are two great examples of well hyped exclusives that were ill-received here.

At the same time, it's not fair to say PS3 fans are bad for favoring PS3 exclusives of multiplats for two reasons. 1) They're PS3 fans. They are going to like PS3 things. 2) Exclusives, no matter what the system they are exclusive to, ALWAYS have the upper hand in terms of quality compared to a multiplat entry as they can be designed specifically for a certain platform.

I don't feel like you have much basis for your opinion.

@TopShelf

I'm playing the 360 version of Black Ops so my "negativity" isn't directed at all to the PS3.

From what I've read during my time at this site, most don't complain about a game because it's a multiplat but because the PS3 version tends to get the shaft. And were the majority of my multi-plats the PS3 version and I had to deal with getting the more inferior version though my machine is the more superior technology, I'd be irked, too. There's no excuse for the better machine not getting the better version.

To me Call of Duty BO is not worth the retail price of $60 bucks, more like 40 bucks in my opinion. With all COD games, used purchase for me. So many other great games than COD...
Remaster COD: UO for the PS3 and I will be more likely to pick it up retail price.

A day is going to come on when I will be in a comments section similar to this one, and I'll be the dried up old gamer saying, "I hate to admit it, but I've never played a single COD game." This will probably happen somewhere around the release of "COD:OVERKILL".

My justification is that I'm still not a big FPS fan. In the PS2 days, I was an RPG, Racer.

My roommates xbox and Halo was the first game that got me into playing FPS'. I enjoy them every now and then, but I don't spend a lot of time on them. I enjoy the storylines of games more then anything. Most of my online shooters I've purchased this generation have been the PS3 exclusives. Socom, Killzone, Resistance, Mag... Those have been good enough to fulfill my frag fest needs. Haven't felt the need to get into the COD whirlwind in order to maintain my fix.

As for the racers? I intend on getting both eventually but NFS is actually topping my list on this one so far.. Don't get me wrong I love the GT series, and have completed GT 1-4 to 100% (including the endurance races). Having done that...I'm a little apprehensive of tackling the daunting task of acquiring all of my licenses and perfecting my Apex's again.

On top of that, I loved the online environment that Criterion did with the last installment of Burnout. With them at the helm of a NFS Hot Pursuit, the online community for this one should be just as fun.

Maybe it's because I'm getting older and don't have as much time for certain games as I used to, Or maybe my attention span is shorter, I don't know, but as much as I love GT, I feel as though that will be a game that I will never finish. For those reasons alone, GT is taking a back seat temporarily while I play some NFS.

To me, GT5 is one of those games that is not intended to be finished. Actually, I'd really appreciate it if polyphony would allow players who got their licenses on previous games to skip the junior licenses on GT5 and future GT games, they are such a pain to go through again...

I never played the COD franchise before the PS3, so I can only comment about the last 4 installments.

What I have found that I cannot stand; AI (at least in the Treyarch CODs) have ultra unrealistic super accurate targeting and seem to always know where you are. It's like the enemies have eyes on the back of their heads or some form of ESP. To top that off, they only seem concerned about 'you' and not your AI teammates.

You know what game has great enemy and friendly AI? Uncharted 1 & 2. Enemies actually appear to use and be restricted to line of sight and AI communication. You can actually trick the AI into thinking you are somewhere you're not. Friendly AI is actually useful as they are racking up some important kills as well as saving my arse on numerous occasions. Games that employ life-like AI are far more entertaining than the ones that are simply a shooting gallery. COD AI doesn't really offer that sort of realism. At least in MOH, my AI teammates actually feel like teammates.

This is why I tend to enjoy FPS games online modes more than the campaign. There is much more satisfaction from out smarting another human-being than some lines of code.

I really have to stop ranting while at work... it just turns swill of comments.

I voted for neither racing game, since I probably will get neither one, but I'm much more likely to get NFS than GT5.

I bought GT3 and didn't enjoy it, though there is no question about its level of quality if you're into sim racing. Maybe if I had racing wheel, I'd enjoy it more.

Of this year's racing games, Split/Second would be my first choice, but I'll probably just keep playing Burnout Paradise. I can't imagine anything more to my taste as far as racers go.

I have to say that I could not stop laughing when I saw the results. However I do disagree. My local Xbot made me play the game at gun point and I must say that it's not bad, not amazing but not bad. 8.5 to 8.8 range.

Now this poll is perhaps the single easiest poll ever. On a side note, how does Demon's Souls stack up to next to Dragon Age?
