PSXE Poll Update: Not Everyone Likes Call Of Duty
All right, so I probably shouldn't have given you guys the option.
We maintain that Call of Duty: Black Ops is a great game (albeit a little lacking in the technical stability category), but the obvious entertainment factor hasn't seemed to sway the PSXE faithful. In our recent poll, despite the words of praise from critics, the majority of participators just replied, "Call of what now?" when asked what their reaction was to Treyarch's latest blockbuster. To be fair, the game seems to get run through the shredder in various forums and communities around the web and although we understand the backlash, we still say a lot of that criticism is unfair and biased. The game wasn't as polished as it should've been and the developer is already hard at work on a PS3 patch but for the most part, it's damn fun. I will say the story was better than I expected and the single-player campaign can be immensely fulfilling.
Next up, it seems we have a racing battle on our hands. Although Gran Turismo 5 is probably the favorite - especially amongst PS3 owners - there's no denying the appeal of Need for Speed, and the new Hot Pursuit game looks great. Besides, many gamers are more arcade-oriented and have no interest in simulators so in preparation for the next few weeks, we ask: which one you gonna get? Or do you just not care about the genre at all? If so, that's fair...besides, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is almost here. Can't wait for that one, right?

Call me crazy, but Aeris was like the sweetest babe ever.
She fit Cloud so well...
You could tell Cloud was more into Aeris' personality than into Tifa's, imo.
Anyway, wouldn't it be great that if they re-made FFVII that they'd give us the option to save Aeris? Alternate storyline?
THEN I'd buy it.
I rate FFVII under all FFs except XIII, but if this option was there it'd definitely pass at least FFV and VI.

Aeris dying is one of the reasons I still rate FFVII below FFVIII.

It was more of an emo Cloud and a "here's my shoulder" Tifa :(
The game's still solid after that and Tifa is cool overall. But it's just that Aeris was what made the game feel alive to me... (no pun intended lol!)
Ok, put it this way, imagine if Yuna died in FFX. Yeah...

Now as for nfs vs gran tursimo if I can spare it I'll pick both up. That way i get the best of both worlds. Yes Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood looks cool but right now I feel like racing.

Indeed. I suspect a lot of PSXer's will be in agreement with this. This kind of hyper success just isn't healthy for the industry. If there is one thing that could kill the industry, or at least put it into a decline for a while, it's a monoculture around Shooters. Unfortunately, that is where we are heading.
I hate to sound like a wet blanket, but you really have to start to ask yourself what it tells you about gamers. What does it say that games like COD Black Ops can sell so many copies and yet games like Heavy Rain struggle to hit 2 million, and even acknowledged powerhouses like MGS4 don't even come close to those numbers. It tells me that the population of gamers is quickly becoming dominated by the lowest common denominator.
Sad.

If there's anything I've learned while working in social services and community development, it's that intelligence and an appreciation for the arts is appreciated by nearly no one, while movies like Hot Tub Time Machine top box office sales.
In our society, there is no hope. Video game technology is 20 years too late. It barely missed a generation of folks who might appreciate the finer things in gaming.

I'm not even sure I am going to get hot pursuit any more at first I was about to preorder it. Now it just doesn't look, play good.
I hated the Demo. I now that the full game will be better but still. I might get, the NFS I really want is a Underground remake. That game was so much fun, and it didn't have cops.

I'm not much into racers, but I loved the first 'Gran Turismo' to death, and have followed the series since. So for me, it's absolutely no competition. Put ANY racing game (heck, put any TWO) against it, and I'll still go with 'Gran Turismo 5.'

sp has the best story for a CoD yet. setpieces can be underwhelming however.
zombies is still fun, but only with friends
mp is the same as ever with many welcome changes and i will be playing it for a long time, but the hit detection and occasional lag prevent what should be easy kills and bring in many, many cheap deaths.
black ops is fantastic, but to me CoD4 is still the best CoD out there.

It will be the game to redefine the genre. I will be getting it no doubt!
NFS has always tried to one up GT, I still remember when the first GT came out. NFS was right there trying to compete with it.
GT has always been the bigger and better racer though.

MoH makes you feel like a big fish in a small pond, where BO makes you feel like the fish.
cant wait till NFS hot pursuit comes out, never got to try the demo, but if its anything like the original ill be playing it for months to come!

Ben gave the game an 8.8 and debated giving it a 9.0. He liked the game... how are people kissing his arse by dissing a game he stands up for?
I think you're a little sensitive, and I don't think you have a very firm grasp on the PSXE community.

@the original poster... Let me get this straight, Ben gives a game an excellent review with only minor quibbles about the game (considering the need for a patch, he could have said more), and yet we're all kiss-asses because we vote the game down? Did it ever cross your cordite addled brain that some of us are not the biggest fans of shooters? And even if we love the genre we can still have an opinion of our own? Never mind the illogic of complaining that we are all sycophantic followers of Ben Dukta because we - wait for it - disagree with him.
Wow, seems like maybe your world view is more than a tad bit distorted there sunshine.

When the context is applied, it makes those people getting angry look moronic. Especially considering the game's ending.
I won't be getting either racing game. I've learned to like FPS games in the past few years, but racing games aren't my thing, and I never have enjoyed them.
Waiting on Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood till the end of the month, along with Fist of the North Star.

As far as racing games, simulators all the way baby! I was playing F1 2010 last night - 67 laps around Hockenheim in Germany. 100% concentration the whole way, and then it started pouring halfway through. Had to pit and switch to rain tires, then it was edge-of-your-seat excitement 'til the end. I could barely see where I was going, REALLY had to have every corner and course contour memorized; constantly pushing the car as fast as traction would allow, but you didn't know exactly how much traction there was with the varying track conditions. An absolutely intense and immensely satisfying experience! I'll remember it forever.
I just can't get into that arcade stuff where you can go around any corner at pretty much any speed, ram the other cars out of the way, maybe even blow them up LOL. It's fun for a while, but the level of challenge just doesn't hold my interest for long enough to be worth sixty bucks.

As for Call of Duty: Black Ops...I don't really know why, but I just can't get into it. Maybe my distaste for the quality of the product just keeps getting in the way. I don't know, but after the game froze on me Friday night, it's been sitting in the corner across the room and hasn't moved since I "placed" it there.
I intend on selling or trading this game while it's worth something. Maybe I'll stand outside of Gamestop and sell it to someone for $50.

I check this site a few times a week for a good read and find alot of people on here have nothing but negativity when it comes to multi plat games. If Black Ops were a PS3 exclusive, then all of a sudden people here would be like '' another hot exclusive'' and say nothing but praise the game. I truly believe that.
Underdog15
Monday, November 15, 2010 @ 10:00:44 AM
Some of this site and it's members favorite games are GTA games, Red Dead Redemption, Assassin's Creed games, etc. etc. All multi-plats.
Now, there might be some CoD hate, for sure, as there is everywhere, but I assure you it has nothing to do with it being multiplat.
Similarly, there have been PS3 and PSN exclusives that have not been well received. I do not believe you when you say you visit regularly. Games like Haze and Last Rebellion are two great examples of well hyped exclusives that were ill-received here.
At the same time, it's not fair to say PS3 fans are bad for favoring PS3 exclusives of multiplats for two reasons. 1) They're PS3 fans. They are going to like PS3 things. 2) Exclusives, no matter what the system they are exclusive to, ALWAYS have the upper hand in terms of quality compared to a multiplat entry as they can be designed specifically for a certain platform.
I don't feel like you have much basis for your opinion.

I'm playing the 360 version of Black Ops so my "negativity" isn't directed at all to the PS3.
From what I've read during my time at this site, most don't complain about a game because it's a multiplat but because the PS3 version tends to get the shaft. And were the majority of my multi-plats the PS3 version and I had to deal with getting the more inferior version though my machine is the more superior technology, I'd be irked, too. There's no excuse for the better machine not getting the better version.

My justification is that I'm still not a big FPS fan. In the PS2 days, I was an RPG, Racer.
My roommates xbox and Halo was the first game that got me into playing FPS'. I enjoy them every now and then, but I don't spend a lot of time on them. I enjoy the storylines of games more then anything. Most of my online shooters I've purchased this generation have been the PS3 exclusives. Socom, Killzone, Resistance, Mag... Those have been good enough to fulfill my frag fest needs. Haven't felt the need to get into the COD whirlwind in order to maintain my fix.

On top of that, I loved the online environment that Criterion did with the last installment of Burnout. With them at the helm of a NFS Hot Pursuit, the online community for this one should be just as fun.
Maybe it's because I'm getting older and don't have as much time for certain games as I used to, Or maybe my attention span is shorter, I don't know, but as much as I love GT, I feel as though that will be a game that I will never finish. For those reasons alone, GT is taking a back seat temporarily while I play some NFS.

What I have found that I cannot stand; AI (at least in the Treyarch CODs) have ultra unrealistic super accurate targeting and seem to always know where you are. It's like the enemies have eyes on the back of their heads or some form of ESP. To top that off, they only seem concerned about 'you' and not your AI teammates.
You know what game has great enemy and friendly AI? Uncharted 1 & 2. Enemies actually appear to use and be restricted to line of sight and AI communication. You can actually trick the AI into thinking you are somewhere you're not. Friendly AI is actually useful as they are racking up some important kills as well as saving my arse on numerous occasions. Games that employ life-like AI are far more entertaining than the ones that are simply a shooting gallery. COD AI doesn't really offer that sort of realism. At least in MOH, my AI teammates actually feel like teammates.
This is why I tend to enjoy FPS games online modes more than the campaign. There is much more satisfaction from out smarting another human-being than some lines of code.
I really have to stop ranting while at work... it just turns swill of comments.

I bought GT3 and didn't enjoy it, though there is no question about its level of quality if you're into sim racing. Maybe if I had racing wheel, I'd enjoy it more.
Of this year's racing games, Split/Second would be my first choice, but I'll probably just keep playing Burnout Paradise. I can't imagine anything more to my taste as far as racers go.
