Naughty Dog: Uncharted "Influenced Greatly" By ICO

Inspirational games benefit everyone, especially when it comes to game designers seeking to create the best of the best.

Recently, OPM readers voted Uncharted 2: Among Thieves as the greatest PlayStation game ever and while the competition is ridiculously high, we're not about to question the results. But believe it or not, Naughty Dog boss Evan Wells said his own game wouldn't be #1 on his list...no, in fact, that would be ICO. Wells mentioned that the PS2 classic has acted as a big influence on their current project. He also singled out Grand Theft Auto III as an influential title that had a great impact on the industry:

They're pretty different games, but they've both influenced the industry tremendously. [ICO's] the kind of game - that linear, narrative-driven experience - that we're focused on making right now. Everyone in the office has been influenced by it greatly; it's just a fantastic game."

More high praise, and not long after Fable creator and Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux had some high praise of his own. ICO is truly a masterpiece so when it arrives in flashy new high-def form next year along with Shadow of the Colossus, it will automatically land a spot in your collection. Right? Right.

As for the huge honor given to Uncharted 2 (along with about a thousand Game of the Year Awards from 2009), Wells said- "[Story-driven games] are very difficult and costly, but I hope people are now realizing how story can really elevate the gaming experience." Oh, we've known, Evan. We at PSXE have known for a very long time. It's the people who are forgetting that concern us.

Yeah, but maybe we shouldn't pick on Ben so much. (Says world after leaving a burn on the 3rd Birthday article.)

High praise indeed for ICO, which I shall be getting in the HD updated form when it releases...

As for Uncharted 2, it receives what it deserves...

No... it deserves more sales, but doesn't seem to be receiving them. The accolades are a different matter.
Peace.

Oh.... some of us have been screaming this at the top of our frustrated lungs for like 6 years now. It's the way the best titles used to be... its where the best titles should be going.

It is hard to interest the majority to a good story. For example look at the movie industry. Some classic movies are those with an excellent story. But those movies are seldom blockbusters. The majority wants action, explosions and sky high body count.

Do you see the resemblance with FPS games?

That's why I will eat poop if Black ops will get GOTY. I can't be. It would be "The Expendables" wins oscar for best motion picture.

Very true.

Mindless massive action and fun = big sales

Beautiful story driven artistic creations = big awards

So, depending on whether or not a developer wants big awards (with long-term recognition) or big bucks (with massive but ridiculously short-term recognition) will determine what kind of game they want to make.

Also, I do not see Black Ops making any Game of the Year lists. Not when Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Fallout New Vegas, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood or Gran Turismo 5 came out this year as well.

For the sake of supporting new IPs and innovation in this day and age, I hope Heavy Rain gets GOTY, it deserves it so much more than the number of sequels being churned out.

Well they say it's influenced by Ico but I don't see anything similar.
But a story is the most important part of a game, it's what keeps you going.

A game with great moments can force me to sit in front of the tv for like 6 hours straight

Ico is a horned boy who is abandoned in a castle filled with evil creatures,he finds a young girl and he should rescue her from those evil creatures.Hence the name Ico.The game is about Companionship,Trust and Heroism. One of the most unique experiences i have had while playing it on tv.

I keep hearing good things about Ico, but the game is too old, I can't find any actual gameplay of it. How does it play anyway? Does the boy fight the creatures or climb around to avoid them?

It's more adventure than action. The boy has to lead a girl (I believe her name was Yorda or something) around picturesque environments, solving puzzles and dealing with shadows. The shadows are basically enemies and although the boy can attack them with a stick, combat is certainly not the focus.

The focus is on the storyline, atmosphere, and unique hand-in-hand co-op type gameplay.

Hey Ben, I think you meant "that would 'be' ICO" instead of "that would ICO."

I could just be reading it wrong. I'm also not trying to be mean or anything. =]

That's right i definitely felt that when i was playing with elena and chloe. When they jump to a ledge and nate should catch them that is taken directly from ico!Just as yorda jumps a ledge and Ico should catch her.

Can't wait to see them on the big screen again, except in glorious HD.

I can definitely see it in Uncharted's environments and how much puzzle influence they used.

ICO's such a beautiful game. It dares you to have patience and to actually see beyond killing/shooting an enemy.

I remember reading in the Official Playstation Magazine for about two years after Ico's release they would put in their awards section "The Yearly Ico Award" just because they loved the game so much. Made me smile every time I saw it...then they stopped.
Ahhh, memories : )

I like that they mention their current project. Does that mean that Uncharted 3 will have more emphasis on co-op?

Either way, it is great to see these industry professionals giving praise to ICO as it raises its prestige in the eyes of gamers, thus potentially boosting the sales of the collection when it releases. Good news all around.
Peace

Aren't we all "influenced greatly" by ICO? I know when I was born, people thought I was strange because I had horns coming out of my head. After playing ICO, I felt...that I wasn't alone anymore. Thank you ICO.
