Blizzard Exploring Possibility Of Diablo III For Consoles

These days, just about anything is fair game for multiplatform endeavors.

This even includes Blizzard, a studio that tends to stick to the PC and Mac. As most of you probably know, they're currently working on Diablo III and in the past, there have been rumors of a console version. Well, the studio is indeed exploring the possibility: after some new job listings popped up on Gamasutra - for a Lead Designer and Lead Programmer for a console version - Blizzard posted an update at the official Diablo community site:

"We're exploring a Diablo-related concept for consoles and are currently looking to fill a few senior console-related positions on the Diablo III team. As we've said in the past, with proper care the gameplay could suit the console platform, and we're interested in seeing what talent out there might be interested in such a project. If you're passionate about all things Diablo and have the requisite skill and experience, then head over to our jobs site to check out the positions and apply.

Please note that this is not an announcement of a console title. We are first and foremost developing Diablo III for Windows and Mac PCs and don't intend to allow any possibility of a console interpretation to delay or affect the release of the game."

It's not really unprecedented. The original Diablo did release on the PlayStation back in 1998. Of course, in those days, it made a lot more sense to play it on PC and although Diablo III will probably still be best on PC, we would expect a console version to be comparable. Cross your fingers and we'll keep you updated.

That's nice, even though I remember reading of similar possibility back at least a year ago.
So how's about a date sometime this decade?
Either way I've got enough til after the holidays but when did diablo become such rocket-science?

The game is practically finished as far as the engine and all goes. They are just adding more and more content to it now. Not to mention the tons of loot!!

Blizzard has always been known to take their time with their games. They are perfectionists as along the same lines as Hideo Kojima and Kazunori Yamauchi. They may take forever with development but it's all worth it in the end.

True but Diablo 1 and 2 weren't really far appart compared to this lol. Took something like 3-4 years between 1 and 2... Now we're topping 10 and were still not so sure XD. Anyway like you say it is probably worth the wait.

I think this game should just stick with the PC though. Can't imagine it on consoles =/ Like SC2. I can't imagine SC2 on consoles, too much micro and macro to work with the controllers.

Don't they have to do what Kotex tells them? Seems like he'd force the issue. This sounds like they make some sort of special edition like Diablo III: Subtitle.

I enjoyed the first one, but haven't the fans been waiting for part 3 for like six hundred years?.

Actually no they don't. They are a separate entity within the organization and have their own management meaning they can do what they want. And thank god for that. Everything they make is high quality and if Kotick was able to get his greedy mitts in Blizzards' affairs, I fear things would go downhill and turn into CoD: WoW Edition or somesuch.

I'll be picking up the Collector's Edition of Diablo 3 for PC as soon as it's available.

Diablo 2 was an amazing experience at first lol. Then dupes and crap got in.

A console version of a diablo 3 would limit hack damage :D :D

And trophies or gamer score would just make it more appealing to some ( like me lol )

Damn I can't wait to try different builds and duel my life out lol. Sure hope this thing is going to be out before I get too old and senile to play XD

I'm interested in Dungeon Siege III as well. I hope it's similar to Champions of Norrath (and the sequel Return to Arms, both of which I still have for PS2). I've played through both with a friend. Hopefully it will be a much bigger game and include even more features, quests, weapons, armor and magic. I would also like the option to use a very in depth costumization feature.

I like dungeon crawlers in general especially with the option of 4 player co-op. Actually I also find Dungeon Hunter: Alliance interesting seeing it has that feature. Even it is a somewhat looking cartoony iPhone game being given the HD makeover I'm keeping an eye on it. This is not meant as a jab, based on the screenshots I've seen I'm somewhat liking the art style (especially considering it's an iPhone downloadable port). DeathSpank is also appealing; the demo is quite fun and funny.

Okay. I played the hell out of Diablo until I lost the disc for it many years ago in the ages of myth. I miss it greatly, but have no inclination to pick up another Diablo on PC... I just don't like PC gaming for whatever reason.

Onto the topic: The only way that a direct port of Diablo 3 would work (I'm working under the assumption that it still plays in the same way the original did here) is if it utilises the PSMove, because it seems to me that the control scheme wouldn't really seem right with the DS3.
Which makes me think that this is would be a spin-off. And if that is the case, I'm thinking a Demon's Souls style control scheme. Which would of course, be awesome. That is all.

Except, speaking of Blizzzard, weren't we already promised a console game from them... Starcraft: Ghost anyone? Yeah, that kind of dashes my hopes for this. In short... Never going to happen!
Peace.

havent enough games been dumbed down for consoles?
sigh, looks like ill have to wait for RAGE to finally see what my PC can do.
:(
what happened to the good old days where games were made for the PC than ported to consoles?
not the other way around!
as if having to put up with a crappy port of black ops was not bad enough!

unfortunately john said doom 4 wont be out in 2012.
though id much rather doom than RAGE, doom 3 is the last game i can honestly say genuinely scared me.
yea, its not suppose to be a scary game, but you cant deny it was one freaking awesome game!!!!!
since duke nukem 3D is getting a HD remake, maybe someone should get into touch with ID and see if they will let them do a HD remake of doom 1 and 2.
now that would be sweet!

And something off topic here, did anyone read about PSDowngrade?
It seems that a way to downgrade the firmware has been confirmed.

yup, but its kinda pointless since you have to pay 40 euros for it and you can only downgrade your FW once.
once you downgrade, if you upgrade thats it your stuck at the upgrade.
so its not like you can upgrade to access PSN than downgrade, rinse and repeat.
give it a few weeks and it will be free, but you can only use it once so whats the point?

If they could have ps3 gamers connected to battle net with pc gamers, that would be awesome BUT it would definitely put console gamers at a big disadvantage when pvp'ing against a pc user. Just like Dragon Age is a much better experience on the pc due to mouse and keyboard, this is just meant to be truly experienced on a mouse and keyboard.

Why a studio would stick to developing for the PC is completely beyond me. You see the sales numbers for CoD on the PC? It's an embarrassment. It's 360/PS3 stats with Wii/PC/Mac all being grouped into one little lame percentile.

Just saying, Blizzard could make a killing on consoles.
