Will GT5 Be The Biggest PlayStation 3 Title To Date?

With Gran Turismo 5 confirmed for November 24, pre-orders are spiking and the rumor is that Polyphony Digital's new masterpiece will become the best-selling PlayStation 3 title thus far.

Thing is, if you go back in time four years and ask an early PS3 adopter why he bought Sony's new machine, the name "Gran Turismo 5" has a good chance of escaping his mouth at some point. It has been hyped and talked about ever since the release of the PS3 and let's not forget that GT is one of the most popular game franchises in history. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec gave the PS2 one of its first big boosts in 2001 - that hardware bundle was a massive seller - and GT4 broke more sales records. So perhaps it stands to reason that the new GT, which has even higher expectations surrounding it, will once again top sales charts. Several retailers are predicting big numbers for the game, including ShopTo.net, and it's quite possible that GT5 could sell more than a few million copies. Can it go past the likes of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots? Who knows? Time will tell.

And don't bother to bring Call of Duty into the discussion. We know the world is shooter-crazy but besides that, CoD is a multiplatform title available to a lot more people than GT5.

I wouldn't doubt that this game will break sales records for a PS3 exclusive. It is, as was said, a huge reason many people bought a PS3, myself included. Too bad it took so long for it to come out, but it's coming now, so that doesn't really matter anymore. Just one more week!

I do not know if it will be the best selling game so far. It may be the Best Game Ever to come to the PS3, but I know a lot of people that do not like Gran Turismo or any racing game for that matter. I have no doubt it will sell very well and that it will be the best racing experience to date.

I think so...Theres to many people who can't see what other Games have to offer rather than CoD. All I hear all the time is "Hay, What about that CoD..." and I'm sick and tired of it, I just hope GT5 can top GOTY, just like Uncharted 2. Its gonna be really tough since theres Halo Reach and Black Ops. But I believe PD has made one of the best Racing series out there!

I seriously doubt Black Ops and Halo Reach even have a chance at GOTY. They are more of the same mediocre junk that just doesn't deserve GOTY. it will either be Mario Galaxy 2, Red Dead Redemption or one of the many PS3 exclusives we got this year.

Goodness, once again, sales don't matter! Uncharted 2 was only about a million out the door and it won GOTY last year. I don't mean to be rude but really, people need to stop with the Sales= Quality or a Win. It simply does not.

Besides, your contradicting yourself. Most casuals don't pay attention to game awards so why would they be voting?

Again, don't mean to be rude but sales matter little in the over all scope of things. uncharted 2 proved that.

I think globally, yes. The great thing about a game like GT is that it's 100% marketable in every major region. Cars from Europe, Japan and the U.S. are offered in stunning detail and precision. It's multi-cultural friendly like that.

oh yeah, quality means something for sure. But better yet, the source content means it's interesting to the big 3 gaming regions. Unlike some games "cough* CoD *cough* Madden

GT5 is compelling in a way that many games aren't

Completely agree. Gran Turismo is the only series that stands the best chance to sell the most copies in all regions.
Franchise sales:

USA/ Europe/ Japan
COD/other shooters: Well Well Poor
Final Fantasy: Good Good Well
Soccer games: Ok Well Good
Other Racing games: Ok Well Poor

Gran Turismo: Well Well Well

If Gran Turismo can't break sales record than no one can....

The thing that sold me on this game was the rally racing. Looks great. I've never seen a racing game with nascar rally and sim put together. Plus a bajillion other things haha

GT's rally though is the funnest rally of them all. Not even Dirt has that FEEL with rally racing found in the GT games.

The tracks themselves just look and drive so well.

At the extreme worst case scenario I expect to see 1-2 million units sold on day 1. Best case scenario, the sky is the limit. Given that Prologue moved over 4 million units, it shouldn't be difficult for GT5 to pass 5 million and thus becoming the current best selling ps3 title (effin MW2).

I hope the sales actually pay for what it must have cost to develop this sucker. I know the US gets like ZERO bundles but they'd be insane not to bundle this since many xbot holdouts still exist that were waiting for this game just to get a PS3.

Prologue sold more than 4 million across digital and physical releases, and GT PSP is over 1.5 million so those titles may well have paid off a lot of the dev costs for the real deal!

It really isn't as simple as "it must sell 4 million on its first year."

GT has every car brand in its game, yeah...guess what that means. Just like car companies pay TV stations to market their cars, they pay games like GT some money to market their cars.

Never mind the tire and car oil companies like Penzoil, Firestone, etc.

Of course sales help too.

It will cross 10 million lifetime. Believe it.

It won't beat its predecessors but this series has LEGS. It will sell well over a long period of time. Not to mention it's releasing right in the middle of the Black Friday madness. Worldwide first week numbers could exceed 3 million easily.

I would also suspect that the hardware boost it recieves will rocket it above the competition for the rest of the year with the possible exception of the Wii.

I have a gut feeling that damn Sony is gonna repeat history and underestimate the sales of PS3 on Black Friday like last year. I can't imagine the madness when there's not enough GT5 on stock for the rest of Black Friday sales.

There was a very early build last winter with just one track i think and a nissan of some sort. I didnt bother with it because i want to wait for the full game so it can really blow me away all at once.

Some Best Buys have demos in their store, though i imagine it wont be easy to get a chance to play it until after the 24th.

I think Move was taken out because GT5 is the kind of game you buy a wheel for instead of shoehorning Move into it. You can get a DFGT for a few dollars on ebay and it is worth every penny.

I'd say a few million right off the bat. Gran turismo isn't a game. It's a racing syndicate. living without a project car to abuse, this is it for me. And I'm absolutely positive there are plenty of gamers who make gt games a hobby it's cheaper and... well, it mostly keeps me sane! Hah...

We (meaning my dad and i) have a project car and i still can't live without GT! We've been working on his 63 Falcon for a while, its a gorgeous car. 302 bored 30 over, C4 trans (auto, but still fun), Mustang 2 front end, 9" rear mini-tubbed with 10" tires on the back (might put something wider on later, we havent decided yet), 2x3" full tube frame the entire length of the car... Its just awesome. It runs great and looks good enough (needs paint bad), but we always find something we can work on with it.

Gt5 lets me do all that work without destroying my bank account!

That sounds awesome! I love falcons! Although I am generally fond of Fords, most of my favorite cars of the 60's were middle of the decade GMs. Although, the Falcon and 68 Cougar are definitely the the coolest, IMO.

It's a shame the engine compartment on Falcons is so narrow, with the launch of the "Hurricane" officially happening, that would be one hell of a cool 5.0 to slip beneath the hood!

GT5 is most definitely an necessary addition to any gearheads gaming library, no exceptions about it! Gaming with a controller may be the general consumers means of racing, but god does it change the gameplay having a wheel! If i wasn't so tight on space in our living room, I'd build a racing bucket out of a Summit Racing seat with sliding rails and the whole deal. haha.. Ahh..

Anyway, shoot some pics my way!

Actually our falcon is quite roomy under the hood. The mustang 2 front end has the shocks placed farther apart so we dont have the shock towers taking up valuable space. Theres so much room in it that the 302 looks tiny!
The next project is ram air. We have everything ready to go but the stupid distributor is the size of a small country and takes up too much room next to the air filter. Once we get a smaller distributor we'll have some awesome ram air action going on.

I have a DFGT, which i consider to be the cheapest acceptable wheel. I cant stand anything but a Logitech, they just get everything right it seems. I may get a g25 in the future, but thats a lot of money to spend on a wheel...

Nice, dude! what distributor are you running? Maybe it's efi time with a stout procharger! He he... The best part about the front mounted distributor is the ability to set your motor back further against the firewall without having to worry about crappy space to reach it (sbc guys would love it in gen 3 f bodies), but yeah, it sucks when it's in your way..

I have the same wheel, too. I just can't afford the g27 as much as I wish I could! I agree, though, logitech is awesome. I've relied on them with my z 5300 speakers, tons of keyboards and mice for myself and builds I've sold. Their customer service hasn't always been there for me, but I've rarely had to even worry about it.

GT3 sold close to 15 million. GT4 sold about 10 and a half million. GT5 Prologue sold about 4 million. See the trend?

In a word: Yes. Of course it won't unseat industry behemoths like GTA or CoD in terms of sales, but looking just at the exclusives, it will blitz through them. I mean, GT5:prologue sits at about the third highest buy rate of exclusives, out of the retail release. That doesn't count the downloaded copies.

I see this easily selling three million in its first quarter of availability, and going on to lifetime sales of over 10 million. Why you might ask... Simple. This is The Real Driving Simulator, and it demands your purchase. On the other hand... I am often wrong.

P.S. I forgot to mention that I believe that there will be a rather large spike in PS3 sales over the Christmas period, thanks largely to GT5, but also Move and LBP2 early next year. That is all.

Hopefully it will demonstrate to some publishers that a) the PS3 market is alive and well, b) we PS3 owners are not all cordite addled, trigger happy drones, and c) you can make a non-shooter and make money.

I feel similarly that I think, as an exclusive, it will probably sell more than any other PS3 game, however the ability of it to cross 10 million units sold may be a bit far fetched to begin with.

As others have stated here, maybe over it entire life time, it will do it. The PS3 has a ways to go, and with the holiday season coming up, there should be some good sales to boot.

Where should GT5 be my Christmas, or just beyond, hopefully the 5 million unit sold mark... after that it will run gaining more sales.

I think it will take some time to reach the 10 million mark, if ever. It surely should, but you never know in this economy. Time will tell.

Your completely correct. I don't think a game like this needs advertising but They need too, have too advertise the h3ll out of it. I want to see commercials on all the big networks. Hey, On speed channel tomorrow with the big block friday showing they do, usually with pass time, pinks all out, intersections, etc. They will be commercials during those.

GT is the best-selling Sony franchise of all time and all 4 GTs released have sold over 10 million copies each when none of PS3's exclusives even sold 5 million beside MGS4.

The answer is obviously yes, this will be the biggest game for PS3.

i dont no if i should pre-order this or nor (no doubt im getting it launch day) but i mean will i really have to? because i have the feeling that in me neighbourhood i can just walk in morning of November 24th and still have loads of copies left! ...does anyone know if EB Games (Gamestop) is offering any pre-order bonuses for canada?

I don't think you will have to pre-order it! There won't be cues of people outside the local GameStop wanting it... I am sure a good amount of copies will sell on the 24th, but I would be surprised if they sold out of copies completely, unless we are all collectively underestimating how bad the PS3 gaming community want this game.

I got kind of a nice deal pre-ordering it from Amazon. Originally it was $60 plus about $7 for release day shipping. Then shipping went to 99 cents, and after it was delayed they announced that release day shipping would be free. And in the meantime, they offered it for $55 for a few days, so I got that discount as well. So $55 with free release day shipping, plus a $10 discount on my next game purchase from Amazon.

I'm gonna go way out on a limb here and predict that it will sell insanely well. Probably give console sales a nice boost during Christmas as well, especially if they come out with a PS3 slim / GT5 bundle.

I was really hoping for a bundle with the PS3 160gig and GT5. but I don't think that is going to happen, most likely there'll have some for black Friday, but none packaged from sony.

I think it'll be the same size as all the others. I mean, how big do they wanna make it? Like the size of the old 78s? If they try to make it any bigger they'll have to ship it with an external disk drive.

Here's my 2 cents. I could care less if its called the biggest game ever on ps3, or if its on the top of any lists and or charts... all I care for is that its coming out next week and that its going to be awesome!! I really find lists and charts pointless as a good game for me is probably not a good game for someone else....

A friend of mine just traded in his Xbox 360 and PS2 so he could get PS3 just for this release. So these are the kinds of things going on out there. I say yes.

It's going on all over the place. I htink PD released the game at the perfect time. Black fiday, Christmas is going to help put a lot. I have a friend that want's to trade in/ sell his 360 and his PSP to get a PS3.

Yes!
GT5 will be the PS3s best game.
Sales are going up like crazy since the announced Nov 24th date.
At amazon they had a 1300% increase for the Collector's edition, 850+%. GT5 is going to sell very well, exceptionally with the help from the holiday's.
Also at amazon the 160GB started jumped up in sales, because of GT5. GT5 is going to break PS3 records and sale many PS3s.
Many people bought the PS3 for this game, or are waiting to buy a PS3 for this game. Gran Turismo has a big part with the PlayStation.

GT5 countdown: 6 days, 4 hours!!!

i hope it does sell millions but i wont be suprised if it doesn't. i wanted gow3 HR AC2 & CODBO but didnt have the funds for niether. all i know is GT5 will be in my hands even if it means putting a bill to the side.

i grew up with this series & its the only game i will put a ridiculous amount of time in to beat it & get lost in. i have a passion for motorsports & the amount of detail Polyphony puts in the series keeps me satisfied untill one day i might be on the track myself.

Well, since everybody seems to take the "yes" stand I'll take the opposite stand again. :)

Logically speaking I doubt gt5 will sell better than Uncharted, simply because Uncharted is a wider genre game. Adventure/shooter is bigger than race sims, thus if the sales of Uncharted were anywhere near it's given potential then gt5 should not stand a chance.

Wow.. I want GT5 to blow COD out of the water. Of course, it will in my book.

What sucks is I was playing black ops when I got the yellow light.. So, no PS3 when GT5 comes out. No sweat though, I'll still be getting GT5 first day. I'll just have to wait on Sony to ship me my new slim.
