Black Ops Sets Five-Day Worldwide Sell-Through Record

We knew the game had broken day-one sales records but how about the five-day record?

Today, Activision has announced that Treyarch's Call of Duty: Black Ops has broken theatrical box office, book and video game sales records for the five-day worldwide sell-through in dollars. The new record is now $650 million, which does indeed outstrip last year's record-setter by Infinity Ward, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which raked in $550 million in the first five days. Black Ops has been warmly received by critics, despite the game suffering from a few technical issues at launch. Said Activision Blizzard CEO, Robert Kotick:

"Call of Duty has become the first entertainment property in history to set five-day launch records for two consecutive years across all forms of entertainment. The title’s success illustrates the mass appeal of interactive entertainment as millions of consumers are choosing to play Call of Duty: Black Ops at unprecedented levels rather than engage in other forms of media. The number of people playing online and the number of hours they are playing demonstrates how online gaming has become a mainstream form of entertainment and certainly validates Activision Blizzard’s leadership role in online entertainment."

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said the primary reason for the huge sales tally is simple: "Treyarch delivered a truly awesome game, and in the process have established themselves as one of the most talented developers in the world." There's little doubt that Black Ops will continue to be popular throughout the holiday season, and you can expect all the hoopla to start afresh about this time next year...when we wouldn't be surprised to see Modern Warfare 3.

Ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous numbers. Now Activision will be insufferable, and other game producers will want games of other genre to mimic this performance or be declared a failure.

It's a cute, pretty, anime maid....called May. I added it in reference to all the controversy about Aya in her maid outfit (Parasite Eve). Worry not, KOS-MOS is ever near and will return (probably today now that folks have noticed the change...).

Hand Maid May - Correct.

Funnily enough (make of this what you will), but she is voiced (English) by the same voice actress as Shion in Xenosaga. The characters also share a similar appearance - brownish hair, side braid and green eyes. So she does look a lot like Shion would in a maid uniform.

Sometime I'll have to pull together an avatar of Shion and May for a comparison. LOL!

Kossy will return this evening.

360 numbers aren't relevant. It'll be interesting to see how GT5 sells in comparison to just the PS3 numbers for the COD's and GTA IV. I'm pretty sure GT5 will outsell all other PS3 exclusives, seeing as how none have broken the 5 million mark.

Unfortunately, I believe Ben is right. The only way GT5 would beat out Call of Duty is if over half of the PS3 owners bought a copy.

Maybe we should start a tally...

There was a time when I would have been proud to see these numbers, but that was years ago when I was very young and naive. Despite what some reviewers and MW2 fans say this is one of the best CoD games ever made, even better then Modern warfare. This is really the first CoD where they actually tried to get you to think about the plot and care more about whats going on rather then just shooting people without thinking. Of all the CoD games Ive bought, this one is one of them that I don't feel that Ive kinda wasted my money like I felt with MW and MW2.

Hopefully Infintyward will learn from this and implement some of these elements in MW3.

I really don't feel that it deserves this title. COD4 was where it went mainstream because COD4 was awesome, COD3 had 11 guns....

Ever since they have only introduced 4 big new features. The rest is slowly improving graphics which will never beat KZ3 or let alone Halo.

I am somewhat ashamed to be a part of the "Record Setting Sales" not only does any CoD not deserve this solely because CoD's are essentially the same game with a few new perks, weapons, characters, and settings, it shows how casual gamers are defining the industry in a certain franchises ridiculous popularity. It is very sad to see other titles that offer true innovation and yet struggle to hit a few million units sold.

I don't do anything to be "cool" this is how I really feel about the game and I chose to voice my opinion. Not a crime, the way I see it I am ashamed because the games reviews are the lowest I have seen for a recent CoD and it really just doesn't deserve this success. There is some truth to the Highlanders comments. If other games don't approach these numbers then they could possibly be considered failures. I personally dont like 1ps that much, except bshock, however I might just give Black Ops a try so I can analyze it to see if all the hate or all the love is justified. Those sales numbers are staggering. Five days and $650 million! That means the game could easily pass $1 billion in a couple of months. That's easy, PS3: God of War 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted 1&2, inFamous, Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, MAG, Heavy Rain, 3D Dot Game Heros etc.

Multiplat: Bioshock 1&2, Red Dead Redemption, Batman: AA, Bad Company 2, Vanquish, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Super Street Fighter IV, Dead Space, Eternal Sonta, Castlevania: LoS etc.

360: I can honestly say I have never played a 360 game I absolutely loved since a majority of their library are SHOOTERS! Though I am sure I would like the Tales series. Just not enough to buy another 360.

Wii: Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, Kirbys Epic Yarn, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Metroid Prime, Zelda: Twilight Princess, New Super Mario Bros, Mario Galaxy 1&2, Super Paper Mario, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Dragonball Z Budokai Tenchaichi 3 etc.

PSP: God of War Ghost of Sparta, God of War Chains of Olympus, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, LittleBigPlanet, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy Dissidia, Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, Valkyrie Profile Lenneth, etc

DS: DragonQuest IX, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Final Fantasy III& IV, etc.

Is that enough for you or should I delve into my favorite PS1, PS2 and Gamecube games too?

It is casual gamers. Anytime someone whom I know doesn't play many games has never heard of Killzone or Resistance or Infamous etc. But I can always count on the knowing and playing Call of Duty. It's the Jonas Brothers of Video Games. One of my friends bought a PS3 just so he could play Call of Duty. It's pathetic.

EDIT: I won't say all because i know quite a few people on this site bought the game who are indeed hardcore but it is a majority i believe. Anytime a non gamer wants to talk to me about video games its.....yup Call of Duty. Just the other day i was listening to a radio program and the host who is a non gamer, who dislikes video games in general even new about Call of Duty. And the funniest thing is, he new exactly how shallow the series is. He more or less described a twitch gamer without know what a twitch gamer is.

I'm a casual gamer, I think. I bought Black Ops and I'm quite enjoying it. However, I'm very new to CoD (this is my first go at one), but I've been a fan of shooters. I like Halo - but I was getting tired of it. I bought a PS3 to have a Blu Ray player and Netflix streaming (without paying an extra $50/year, thank you very much, MS). I also thought it might be fun to explore some of the PS3 exclusives as well. Plus, I have small hands and the 360 controller is quite cumbersome in design for people like me.

Anyways, I have Black Ops - like it. BUT, Uncharted has been capturing a majority of my play time lately. I tried Killzone 2 - just didn't grip me so I traded it for Drake's Fortune. I got 2 hours into it and bought Uncharted 2 (waiting for me to finish Drake's Fortune). I also bought MoH (which I also like), and Resistance FoM. Got the Move package so Sports Champions as well and LEGO HP too. I think I'm probably very much a casual gamer.

I'm guessing there are a lot of "casuals" like me picking up Black Ops - honestly the story is pretty gripping, although the action can be over the top at times. I really prefer the pacing of Uncharted and Resistance, but BO is a good game too.

Just my two cents.

I categorize hardcore gamers, not as people who do nothing but play games, but as people who don't discriminate against genres to the point they only stick to one thing. If all you play is sports games or shooters, you're casual in my book. Maybe a hardcore shooter fan, perhaps, but not a hardcore gamer.

Underdog. Indeed. A hardcore gamer is a gamer that plays games regardless of genre. I mean we all have our likes and dislikes. Look at me, I am not a big fan of shooters, yet I cut my teeth on Doom and Quake back in the day, and despite my states dislike for online multi-player, I do play Uncharted 2 online and enjoy it.

A hardcore gamer is a gamer who can find a game in pretty much any genre to like. It's the kind of gamer that plays games for their game value and not because their friends are all playing it. My library is eclectic and varied, and includes games of almost every genre.

I loved CoD back in the day. And I owe a lot to CoD for being one of the first games to get me into gaming. But now in 2010 I only play CoD games for fun and with friends, its not up to par with almost any other fps out there and it doesn't do anything new, although I do like BO, I like to devote the majority of my time playing games that do something different.

And for me Half-Life 2 is the best fps ever! then Crysis.

That is unreal. And here I was thinking Harry Potter was an overrated phenomenon. I can't help but wonder at the popularity of this series though. I get that people play it for the online, but are there not other, more stable, more involved online segments in other First Person Shooters?

$650 million dollars over five days... I guess the continuance of CoD Yearly isn't about to change when it drags in that much money. I just hope publishers don't get it into their heads that this should be the norm.
Peace.

Because this industry isn't about artistic vision, quality and innovation anymore. It's about a quick fix for shooter junkies who can't sit and think about what they are doing for longer than 10 milliseconds. Activision has succeeded in bringing out the mediocre crowed like a hoard of zombies looking for their next meal. Those of us who appreciate games like Heavy Rain are left to fend for ourselves in this apocalypse.

Yes exactly how I feel. It is very upsetting that that is the way of things.

@Jawknee Then let us all who enjoy the true quality games bust out our shot guns and start blasting away! :)
And maybe after enough time has passed it will be only our kind that remain.(High and very improbable hopes but still, I can dream can't I?)

I'm ok with a publisher garnering this type of success, as I'm always glad to see more people become involved in gaming, whether hardcore or casual or anything in-between.

What I DON'T want to happen, is for video games to suddenly lose a high degree of variety. As long as video games stay diverse and fresh, let the CoD's come til' the CoW's come home.

I think there needs to be a medium. As we have seen with the Wii, the casuals flooded the market and now the Wii has a small library of great games while the rest is shovelware geared towards the casuals. Same with Call of Duties success. We are already seeing some of our favorite Japanese game companies trying to emulate it's success by going more casual or more shooter and action heavy. I fear what you don't want to happen has already begun.

You may be right. What my sincere hope is, however, would be for us to see at least one incredible title each year per genre.

I for one, only end up completing about 4 or 5 fulls games in a single year, while toying around with others. If I can get a great adventure, 1 sweet RPG with gripping story, and 2 or three other amazing titles in a year, I can live with the other 80 releases being mediocre to garbage. Just means I gotta be more selective.

Since it seems inevitable that quantity will trump quality, I would be satisfied to find a small handful of gems each year. Hopefully, we can achieve at least that.

The problem I see with this kind of hyper success is that other publishers start measuring the performance of their own games against it, and whether their games are profitable or not, the expectation is that they will somehow imitate COD's performance. And it's not just the companies, it's the investors. Investors who know jack about games and gaming see COD and want to know why other games aren't selling that well. The result is that they are less likely to invest if a game from another company doesn't have that level of success. OK, it's not entirely that simple, but that is the general trend. People inside and outside the industry see such hyper success and begin to expect something like it in other genre. That is damaging to the industry - IMHO.

I'm gonna go off script here and just start a slow clap. Nice work Treyarch, I may be largely against CoD and what it does to the industry at large but I guess a success is a success and though mediocrity doesn't deserve accolades, I suppose it does get better sales. Nice job kids, let us know when you're ready to play with the big boys like Naughty Dog and Guerrilla Games.

God of War 3 is a fantastic game, GTAIV is a fantastic game, MGS4 is a fantastic game, KZ2 is a fantastic,LBP is a fantastic game, and so on and so forth. Black Ops doesn't even begin stack up against these games, it is a GOOD game, not a great or fantastic game, it's a good game. I will not deny Black Ops' quality, because it is a good game as I said before, but nothing about the game is fantastic.

I really don't think that Publishers who don't hit call of duty numbers are going to be upset, it would be nice to hit but they wont be upset. I think all Publishers know that the Call of Duty series is on another level in terms of popularity and will outsell any game this generation.

Michael Jackson's Thriller Album sold 80 + million copies, do you think every artist that didn't sell that many copies were considered a failure?

it's been an annual thing. Ever since Call of Duty came out they have been making them each year. I notice that some years they release multiple too. It all started with modern warfare to begin things with that started the massive fps explosion. Halo 3 might have hyped thing up a bit before but call of duty 4 really got things started. Let's hope modern warfare 3 will make it next year or the year after.

i congraj the COD series on there success. i think the reason why this series exceeds is cause of the conent. violence, & guns being captured by artists & then put into a virtual realm where anybody can have a form of power & controll. since its a video game it also contains fun & thats what most people want.

if you notice the only other game series that lives up to these sale numbers is GTA. why cause its a virtual realm where anybody can cause, violence, theft, & sex without no consequences & cause its a video game its fun.

i just hope that developers & artists that have a passion & vision dont turn into this trend of making something just for sales. im not against what COD does for video games whether its intended or not i just favor the work of others that do things in depth cause of appreciation & results pay of with quality. i also hope the industry doesnt get greedy & turn the video games into something just done for $$..... by the looks of it.... its already begun....

i wonder how many units gone be pushed over christmas.....

You're great at riding on the coattails of other's success. I bet your favorite sports teams change every year as a new champion is declared or your current fave team is knocked out of the playoffs.

CoD might win in sales, but I fail to see how I lose anything at all...

And why would I have to settle for MAG? It's a great game too, from what I hear, but I've never played it. Maybe I'll have fun with WKC or Uncharted 2 depending on my genre preference.

I like Black Ops ok. I enjoy it. It's nothing special in my eyes, but I do like it... But I seriously doubt guys like Highlander and Biker Saint or Jawknee or any of the others feel like they're somehow missing out by not buying it...

Contrary to popular belief, the sun does not, in fact, shine out of Kotick's a$$.

@Booze
Did it ever occur to you that no one else cares about your blind CoD fettish, either? yet, that doesn't stop you from spouting your opinions left, right, and centre. So why should I stop just because you don't care?

And I never felt like you were directing it at me at all, but surly even you can comprehend that such hatred for people who dislike your favorite game is going to ruffle a few feathers of people who you never intended to insult!

Also, that was 5 things. Not 3. I never told you what my preference was. It was a generalization because I was answering in a way that recognized you weren't specifically talking to me, unlike you thought. And obviously, you do care about what other people like Highlander and Jawk think because you're hell bent on saying things like calling them "suckers"... as if they have somehow lost something... You also avoided addressing every one of my comments leaving me to believe I've obviously forced you to resort to playing the "I don't care" card due to the excellent points I made. Lastly, football is the worst and most boring sport in the world. It's the FPS of the sports world... a twitch game. Play for 5 seconds at a time... lol. What a joke. They even let the clock run out while nothing is happening.

im guessing ur not a hater because you like black ops, but what haters lose is the "CoD is crap" argument because Black Ops lived up to its hype.
you don't need 2 settle for MAG. i was cracking a quick insult. play kz2 or uc2 or whatever.
whether jawk or highlander like it or not isn't my concern because no random strangers opinion matters 2 me.

I was a casual gamer when I first bought it, because I bought it for PSHome. YES I KNOW. I also bought it because it looked awesome. Hey I was young back then and was willing to ask my mom to buy me something that was 300 pounds because it looked awesome.

But once I bought MGS4..It all changed. I can honestly say that game alone converted me. I wept at the end too (don't tell me you didn't), maybe that was the turning point. But since that game, I have learned to appreciate games, so much infact that I aspire to create them in the future.
