GT5 Online Servers Struggle, Update Coming Soon
So Gran Turismo 5 doesn't have enough to offer offline; everyone has to go and clog up the online servers immediately?
Well, all that traffic is causing problems for the GT5 servers. Sony just made mention of the congestion and what you can do to combat any issues; Eurogamer posted the notice and a few additional comments Sony made within the in-game GT5 news feed. While they work on things, they ask you to do the following:
"Because GT5 performs online access not only when participating in online races and using community features, but also when starting the game and during the various screen displays in GT Mode, unfortunately this online congestion is also affecting standard gameplay.
Currently we are simultaneously working on several different solutions to improve the network status and alleviate the network congestion as soon as possible. We are expecting to be able to provide a proper online service again soon. We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience."
In addition, we have learned they'll be providing us with the first patch on Saturday. GT creator and Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi told Eurogamer that they've received quite a few demands and suggestions for online fixes, and the developers will waste no time in responding:
"We received a lot of demands for having more regulations placed on the online play. We're going to perform an update on the 27th that will include things like max power restrictions and weight restrictions.
It's like a living creature, dynamically growing as we speak."
This update will "refine the usability of the game to make it a better experience," which is really what we want from all big patches, right? Yamauchi adds that it'll be "hard to find an end to the process," what with GT5 being so freakin' big and so freakin' popular. So for the time being, or at least until the weekend, maybe you should just focus on offline stuff...you know, there's quite a bit to do.

But hey, no rush. I think most of us here would want Ben to play the game deep enough to be able to give a proper review. I'd say, even wait for the online patch that drops this saturday...

Yes, apart from all those things, it's "just like Prologue"...whatever.

And as I said, it's good that they will be patching it to try to iron out all of the peculiar little ticks that reviewers have picked up on... I get it today... Not for about another twelve hours though. Can't wait.

This wheel workes perfectly in Prologue, has great support in all Codemasters racing games (Dirt 2, F1 2010) but GT5 is totally ignoring it.
It is not a racing simulator for me if I have to use a Dualshock to play. Tried one race yesterday and shelved my collector's edition until they figure out how to support racers. I can wait another year or two I guess. 100$ for 1 race. Wouldn't get many stars in my review.

Those who criticize seem to be those who do not have the skill or patience to play this SIM. You simply can not play this the way you play Burnout or any other arcade racer. I observed this with a few people already. 2 out of 5 could not handle the controls and automatically the game "SUCKS". The car lovers are really feeling GT5. 2 of them are going to purchase a PS3 just for this alone. GTTV the Lounge and the Community has them excited. Wait till they get into the other features the PS3 is capable of.
P.S. For those who celebrate... Happy Thanksgiving. For those who don't Happy GT5 day!
P.S.S. For those who don't like GT... Find something to be happy about. Stop hating.

"The physical damage modeling in GT5 is released from currently Level 20"
Does this mean we haven't been experiencing "actual damage"? We've just been getting the dumbed down version cause we're not skilled enough (yet?). Is anyone over level 20 and can they confirm this? Even if it isn't it wouldn't bother me, I play not to crash, but it'd be a good thing to throw in the face of those idiot reviewers who played the game for a few hours and had the nerve to release a review based on that with supposedly "fully-formed and accurate opinions".

god dam it sony, why cant you ever release a game and have a smooth release?
resistance 2 released and had so many bugs every game i entered it froze, or enemies got caught in walls.
KZ2 released and had so many bugs every game i entered either kicked me out with the 5021 error, or had ridiculous lag!
MAG released and had so many bugs every game i entered froze on me, or plain out kicked me out.
why cant sony actually get things right for a change?
just goes to show how f*cking god dam unorganized they are!
i dont see halo or ME having these problems.
nor do i see mario kart.
come on sony, just once can we have a game working perfectly from the get go?
just once?
pleeeeeeeeeeeeease?

Once again your freaking out. Maybe you should stop playing games... They all seem to frustrate you. The only game I've ever seen you say anything good about was AC and then ten minutes later you were frustrated at it... I dont think this is a healthy hobby for you!

I haven't taken it online yet, but I did note that after I signed out of PSN to play GT5 tonight (remember the servers are down for emergency maintenance), I noted that the game plays a bit better with less time taken transitioning between many of the menus and into a race.
Anyway, I've experienced no framerate slowdowns, and no tearing at all. I'm playing on a 1080p screen, and have seen no issues.
Standard cars are a little more restrictive than premiums but since the restrictions on their really have no impact on their performance characteristics it doesn't matter at all. I haven't tried the weather effects yet, and I'm quite OK with that.
People have said this is just like GT4, it's not, it's better. People have said this is like Prologue, it's not, it's light years better. If you take all the good things from GT4 and GT5 Prologue and bring them together in one game, then add some polish and a few new features - course creation - then you get what we have here GT5. It's not perfect, but it is very, very, *very* good.
I think that if some of the people complaining would relax and play it a bit more without looking for fault, they might find that under all the petty criticism is a fantastic driving sim/racing game.
Regarding the one review from IGN (I haven't seen the rest). Either the reviewer was not working with a final copy of the game, or he only just got it (remember a manufacturing delay nearly pushed the game back to December). If he was working with a pre-production copy, there are things that may be better and different in the retail copy compared to his. If he was working with a release copy, then he could not have spent long with it. It's only after about 12-15 hours of play that I've got where I am with the game, and I've barely scratched the surface. You really can't review this game after a short play. You need to spend some time getting the licenses an working through the events.
Anyway, I just want to say to everyone who's still wondering about this. GT5 is at very least a 9/10 game. It's not in any way a bad game. The worst issue it has - other than the online issue that is being fixed - is occasionally annoying AI drivers. Apart from that, this game is exactly - and I really mean EXACTLY - what it should be. Gran Turismo for the PS3. If you were expecting something other than what GT already was, then you were really looking for a different game. GT is about the actual driving, not the environment or the damage or anything else. It's about the performance of the machine and how fast you can get it around the circuit.
So, if you're still on the fence, don't be, and don't be worried about the game. It's not disappointing, it's not a let down, but then neither is it the key to world peace, or the universal solution. It's Gran Turismo on the PS3. Think about that for a moment. Take GT4 make it bigger and better, add some features, more cars and make it properly HD. That's about what any GT fan wants from a GT game on the PS3, well, that's what this delivers.
Hmm... that was supposed to be quick. Oh well...
This is the Gran Turismo game you've been looking for...

My biggest disappointment is the lack of cockpit view for the standard cars. I've got a wheel and I can't play the game in any other view. It's too arcady otherwise.
In my opinion:
Wheel + GT5 + Cockpit view = the best ever.
Wheel + GT5 + car view = too arcady.
Controller + GT5 = stick with Dirt2, Forza or NFS.
People complaining about the 1 hour install time? Jeez, just start the install, crack open a bottle of wine, cook dinner, speak to your wife, put the dishes in the dishwasher.
Install complete!

My ONLY disappointments are the fact that I can't Race Modify all the Premiums nor put wheels on the standards and some jaggies.
Outside of that, a 9.4 score for me, with a 1/2 point deduction in the aforementioned and some a 10th of point on the jaggy issues on the shadows.

Oh, but it gets better. The guy hosting the race wanted to change the number of laps, but he apparently couldn't do that because one of the players entered the race too soon, so halfway through the first lap he announced that he was booting everyone out, and then I got a "connection with server was lost" message.
What a fun online experience!
I don't know if there's any way of entering a race that's about to start so you don't have to wait around, and I'm sick of pouring through menus and sub-menus trying to locate stuff that should be front-and-center. I'll just stick with the offline for now.

"Gran Turismo 5 is an extremely deep and satisfying game, held back slightly by some poor design choices. Perhaps if the game hadn't been in development for so long and so eagerly anticipated certain issues could be overlooked, but the developers have always set such a high standard that any flaws - from occasional graphical glitches, to frustrating menu navigation - are much more glaring than in other racing simulations. "
The gist of this is that because the developer took a long time with this version, and because previous GT games have been so good, we are going to hold this one to a higher standard. Therefore despite this being an excellent game we'll give it a score that is merely good, or perhaps very good, because, you know, we like to punish a game for taking too long or having a great pedigree.
There also seems to be a bit of a case of not actually playing deeply into the game, and reviewing it based on some quick play time and the expectations of it based on previous GT games. You can't do that IMHO, you just can't.
This same review contained this rather odd comment; "Many of the traditional race courses such as the F1 Monaco circuit and some of the countryside areas are quite barren,"
Monaco is Barren? What did the reviewer want, spectators littering the course? It's an F1 course, it looks just like the real f1 course, I've watched dozens of races over that course. It looks like the real thing. What are Polyphony supposed to do? Spice it up some with curbside food vendors that the driver can stop and grab a burger from?
The reviewer says that the countryside courses are quite barren too, this has to be a reference to the Top Gear Track. The thing is, the Top Gear track looks exactly like it does in the game. It's an old airstrip, the land is flat and open, and there's not a lot around the actual course. Once again, I have to wonder what this person expected? The Polyphony guys went to the real world locations and took pictures, ground surveys, and all sorts of other metrics to fully model the environment. When you race on Laguna Seca in this game, you are racing on Laguna Seca. When you race that 13 mile long Nordschleife in Germany or the other endurance track in France, you are driving an exact replica of the real course. If you went to the course and looked at it from the driver's eye view in reality, it would look the same.
I think that there is a major disconnect going on between gamers/reviewers who think that GT5 should be something it is not, and people who want GT5 to be what it is - a driving/racing simulator that let's you drive realistically modeled cars around real circuits with driving physics that are truly accurate. GT5 is not an arcade racer, and is not designed to be an arcade racer. Real racing tracks are fairly barren, boring places - unless you're a racing fan or driver of course.
Seriously though, I remember playing a game back in 1984 called REVS. It was Formula 3000 racer on an old 8-bit home computer that was popular in the UK. The guy that programmed it was Geoff Crammond, you may know his name from the F1 Grand Prix simulator games on the PC (and other simulator games). REVS was very limited in it's graphics because it was on an old 8-bit computer with a 2MHz processsor and 32KB of memory for graphics and game code. However, it taught me something that holds true today with GT5 more than ever. My friends hated the game. Why? Because it was boring, because you couldn't see the course, because it was hard...Well, the thing is, the game was a simulation. The car physics were fairly accurate (considering the computing power, they were awesome), the graphics were realistic (as far as possible with the resolution) you could only see the course as the driver would in reality. This meant that there was a small amount of track visible ahead and a lot of sky. You actually had to learn the courses, every undulation of them was modeled. It was a superb game/simulator at the time.
But it taught me the difference between an arcade racer and a racing simulator, and the difference between someone who likes the racing simulator kind of game, and someone who prefers the arcade racers.
GT5 is a racing simulator. The graphics are very accurate, the driving, car performance, car physics and track layout are all as real as you are going to get in any racer available. They are not augmented for game purposes, they are not treated to a veneer of arcade 'fun' or distraction.
I honestly think that a lot of reviewers are missing the point of the game completely. They are evaluating it in comparison to racers that lean heavily towards the arcade style of racing. Even other supposed racing simulators make concessions to the video game feel adding certain arcade style elements. GT5 does not do this, and so it feels bare, sparse or barren to those expecting a video game/arcade veneer to have been applied.

I was so excited couldn't stop smiling. I watched the intro video as soon as it got to the cars my jaw hit the floor, by the end of it I had to wipe off my DS3, because it was covered in droll and I had to pick up my jaw from my lap. :D
I just finished my first race and was wondering how to download the 8gig install. Nothing came up to do it and I can't find anything. I'll get my 6 DLC cars then hopefully somebody has an answer for me in not to long. I'm bringing my PS3 to my cousins and we'll be playing it all night on a 60".
Please somebody, please reply.
The long, long wait is over, and that first race was worth it :D
See you all on the track :D

The CE cars are obtained with a downloadable code that is on a small sheet that is inside the packaging. It has a GT5 logo on one side, and the download code is on the other, under a sticky label that you pull off.
When you start the game, you might want to consider signing off PSN before playing for the next couple of days, there have been some server issues with the game, and this interferes with the game's operation even when you are not racing online. The easiest thing is to simply sign off PSN and then everything is fine.
Have fun.

(It never prompted me to install to hard drive and I've got 60GB free).
I agree that the menu navigation is pretty confusing to begin with. I've been playing GT:PSP and GT5:Prologue recently so it all seems very familiar.
The cars drive fantastically! The precision you get from using a driving wheel is brilliant. Very happy with GT5.
