OPM Provides New ME2 PS3 Details

Mass Effect 2 is headed to the PlayStation 3 in January and if you weren't excited before, you might be after reading the most recent info update.

The latest issue of OPM features ME2 and the magazine dishes on plenty of details set to entice the RPG aficionado who didn't get a chance to play BioWare's excellent adventure on the Xbox 360 or PC. Some of that info has been posted over at the NeoGAF forums and here are the highlights:

-- Nearly $100 of additional content, all 3 major expansion packs and over a doze on smaller Pieces of DLC altogether adds up to approximately 20 hours of additional gameplay.

-- The PS3 version will also feature 3 years worth of engine updates and every patch release for the game.

-- The developers promise that they are not taking any shortcuts. "Oftentimes when you got to the PS3 you see stuff like down-resing and using a smaller than 720p resolution to try and get back some of the framerate. We haven't done that says producer Jesse Houston, we really wanted to try to make it as good, if not better than the Xbox version."

There are a lot of reasons to want ME2 for the PS3 when it arrives, and perhaps one of the biggest is that RPGs aren't quite as numerous this generation. For our part, we're most interested in Dragon Age II, which is scheduled to release in March; it's about as close to traditional role-playing as we're gonna get these days.

nice to hear that they're doing whatever they can to make ME2 the best it can be. CRAPtavision, you should take note of the third highlight if you don't want PS3 owners filing a class action lawsuit against you.

I'm assuming something got lost in translation, instead of "dozen" someone typed "doze on."

Anyway, I lulled.

This looks some what good and I love that they are working on the frame rate. The frame rate in DA:O made me want to cry. On that note I think I may pass on this for a while as Dragon Age 2 is coming out a bit after and I can't wait.

It was revealed in earlier news that there will be an interactive *comic* thing replacing ME1 so you can make all the important choices yourself before you start ME2 :D

I'll get it, and all those extras are great and all, but they can throw in a kickstand for all I care cuz I won't be paying full price for an old game that should have been on PS3 from the word go.

Dragon Age II is a lock for sure, and I hope they have fixed the frame rate in that series.

If they have actually done this right, I may buy it simply out of the principle of supporting good developers.

I've got ME 1 & 2 on my bot box, but I still want the PS3 version, just for the difference in the way they'll be explaining M! in it, plus the comic, and also for all that additional $100 worth of extra DLC(which I never buy).

Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 is my next D1P for me. I'll be ready to give GT5 a rest by then.

Looks like a good deal for PS3 owners. I wasn't really a Dragons Age: Origins fan but this one looks good for us Sci Fi fans.

From what I've played of ME2, it feels less of an RPG than it's predecessor. It definitely skews more TPS action shooter while in action. And it went through a major upgrade in play over it's first outing in this regard. But un-expectantly, what compels me most, the experience of the saga and the firm feeling of living in the shoes as Shepard is so captivating. The universe and depth of this sci-fi adventure is so fantastically designed it's hard not to get lost in the world it creates around you. The interactions with aliens and people are so convincing to me. It really feels like I'm experiencing a lot more (or different) than what I'm used to feeling from most video games. To me, (and the majority of critics) it really is a strong candidate for overall GotY.

Bioware did a decent job with Dragon Age as a multi-plat. Having tried both console versions, there were definite pros and cons to each version of the game. 360 enjoyed 2xAA and an overall smoother frame rate; whereas, the PS3 version had some higher detailed texturing and nicer texture filtering (keeps the textures looking more sharp as they recede to the horizon) Overall, I'd personally take the 360 version, but depending on who you are, I'd find it perfectly understandable if someone had a preference for the PS3 version.

Seeing that Bioware is concerned about not letting ME2 be recognized as a lesser port, I'm hopeful that PS3 users will get a quality experience with this game.

Unfortunately, I can't think of a single UE3 game that's ever ran better on PS3 over 360.. but there's always a first time for everything, right?
Hopefully, these upgrades they speak of offload work onto the SPU's. Really, right off the bat, the PS3 should be able to handle some edge smoothing and superior motion blur post-processing effects.

Um....didn't Unreal Tournament 3 on the PS3 work better than the 360 version?

UT3 was very good on the PS3. I never seen it on the 360 but was very impressed playing it on my PS3.

From what I've read, they worked nearly the same. Though, whether it's to be believed or not, a reader contended with DF's findings and captured photos that clearly showed a level of detail that extended further into the background on the 360 version.

I think it's pretty safe to claim that, usually, UE3 games run better on 360 than PS3, but that's not to say few games, like UT3, run virtually the same. Aside from UT3, I really can't think of another that was so close. I can name quite a few that ran a lot worse, though =
Hopefully, these discrepancies can be chalked up to the skill of the developer. Perhaps, a developer as experienced as Bioware can make a near seamless, if not better, version for PS3 gamers, even with UE3.

Bioware is easily one of my favorite devs... They released dragon age as their first game on the PS3 and it was a huge success with continued support. Now they are bringing one of the 360' biggest names to the PS3, and "making it as good, if not better than the xbox version"!

Try really are making an impact and a lot of devs should take advice. I really would like to play ME first because I would mch rather play the prequal first... But theirs mo way I'll pass up on ME2 because of that! From the sounds of it I'd be a fool to pass up on it! I can't wait!

This is actually the last game I bought for the 360, and it was totally worth it. So glad to see it coming to the PS3.

I can't help but LOL at $100 of dlc. They can put a bunch of bullet points on the back of the PS3 casing if they want, but in the end, I'm not giving them $50 for having ignored my console of choice.

I'd be tempted to get this if I didn't have GT5, DA:Origins: Ultimate Edition, and Demon's Souls on my backlog... Maybe if we ever hit a drought in which I can get through them I'll pick it up.
Peace.
