EA: We're Okay For Now, But Woods Needs To Win

Tiger Woods and EA are okay for now, but there's a caveat: the former #1 golfer in the world really needs to start winning again.

According to a recent Reuters report, EA CEO John Riccitiello has said that if the EA/Woods partnership is to remain strong, the still-embattled golfer will have to snap out of his funk next season. If you took a trip to Mars over the past year, you probably missed the scandal; if you actually need a refresher course, Google is your friend. But anyway, Woods hasn't managed to win a tournament since the ugliness exploded on national television, and he has also lost his #1 ranking. And while the EA boss says his words are "no threat against Tiger," the business relationship is...well, a business relationship. Said Riccitiello:

"We're with him because he has the promise of being the world's best golfer. We have no plans to move away from him, but it's a business relationship on the basis of we make the best golf game and he's the best golfer. Both of those things need to be true in the long run for the partnership to make sense."

Woods' issues off the golf course don't concern EA, but Riccitiello admits that the one-time dominant athlete may never reclaim his singular, all-powerful spark. For the time being, however, both parties will push forward and hope that Woods enjoys a more fruitful 2011...more wins will make everyone happy, including EA. Finished Riccitiello:

"He sort of stuck with us for a very long time and we made great business together, and we're willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for a period of time."

Just be wary of that last bit, Tiger. "A period of time" sorta means you're on the clock. Good luck.

Ah, schadenfreude! I don't follow any type of these celebrities scandals, but sometimes I cannot help just feeling this... oh, well... as far as gaming is concern, is the game any fun at all? I guess that may be somewhat entertaining with Move.

Maybe EA could make the next TW-12 more arcade-y....
.....where his wife chases him down the driveway brandishing his own 9-iron, he crashes, stays mum too long, & then admits to almost nothing.

And if he doesn't tell his public the truth, whole truth, and nothing but the truth, he loses sponsorships.

And if he winds up losing every one of his sponsors, then it's game over

That makes sense. It's good that they aren't trying to punish him for the scandal, as he is only human. Everyone has to give into temptation now and again. His temptation was women, so be it. To focus on his career is a good thing, but Tiger Woods has such a powerful presence, he is a singular example when it comes to golfing. Everyone knows who he is, and I think that it wouldn't be a smart thing to drop him on the part of EA, because there really is no-one to replace him. Still, I suppose you should only ever advertise the best, and if he isn't...

It always bothers me when people use "human" to mean "fallible".

A true human would be able to control his urges well enough to stay faithful to his wife (or at least know himself well enough not to get married in the first place). I'd call what Tiger did "sub-human".

I guess that's just the Frank Herbert fan in me, though.

True, but are you saying that a real human will never give into temptation and always remain grounded in his/her moral system? Because I honestly know not a single human being capable of doing that. No matter what form the desire takes, most of us must eventually give in to it.

Oh I'm pretty sure Woods is aware that only the best golfer gets the front of the box when it comes to commercialism. Being friends with the nerds at EA doesn't get you squat.

EA should just make a golf game like they do all other sports. With whomever athlete is hot that year being on their cover. It may just bring better awareness to the sport and its young and talented golfers that many probably don't know about yet.
