You Won't Find Girl Gamers Because They're Hiding

Girl gamers do exist. I wrote an editorial some time ago entitled, Is The Girl Gamer A Myth? and after the massive influx of e-mails in my inbox disabusing me of such an absurd motion, I was forced to issue a follow-up article citing many of the responses.

However, at the time, I noticed a recurring theme in those responses and ever since, that theme has become more obvious. Girl gamers are out there and many of them are probably playing online with you...but you might not ever know it. Why? Because the maturity level of too many gamers is below that of an infant. Has anyone been in PlayStation Home if someone is wandering around with a female avatar? How many times did I hear a girl gamer say they play shooters all the time, but never with a microphone, because it would become an unbearable experience? Some of those gals are just plain unapologetic; they're out there, and they're gonna kick your ass if you've got a problem with it.

But most, I've found, aren't like that at all. Whether it's because older gamers can scarcely believe any normal female would play video games, or because the younger crowd hurl insults while hiding behind the veil of anonymity, many females who indulge in the hobby prefer to stay out of sight (and out of ear). Some don't even like the idea of going into GameStop; if the girl is even remotely attractive, they're creeped out in minutes if a certain clientele happens to be in the store. Things aren't any better in online communities; that veil of anonymity once again causes all sorts of problems, and again, I've heard of many a girl gamer hiding their gender when posting in game forums. This is not a good sign. Immaturity and video games have been linked together for a very long time - a common stereotype - and this really isn't helping.

Oh, they're out there, all right. But you'll probably never see one, because she's either disgusted or freaked out whenever that fact becomes public knowledge. So maybe the best indicator of an audience that is finally grown up arrives when girls don't have to tolerate our adolescent bullsh**. Wonder when that will be?

One way to fix the bull$#!+ online is to provide the person's Phone Number, Home Address, and Hair Color next to their online account.

If they lost the 'safety' of being anonymous, I'm sure they'll quit the bull$#!+.

on a related note, i used to find out friends i had made while playing games online were girls months after the fact when on a private chat channel. theyre definitely out there, and theyre definitely hiding.

I know a few males that they'd feel awkward, to say the least, knowing a female plays videogames and they could get beaten by them. I'd be thrilled to play with girls anytime. I say, the more, the merrier!

I once saw this large female frog in a pond and it had been pounced upon by 20 smaller male frogs. They had all grabbed on to the female and she was drowned by the weight of the males...

I think that is a bit like being a female gamer (especially online).

Sometimes better to keep your head down otherwise before you know it you will be battered and bruised and covered in tadpoles.

I actually have a few girl gamers I play with. I respect them and we have fun kicking as$. With that said I agree that ppl go crazy online when they find out a gamer is a girl. I recommend a respectful approach then maybe one day we can all play together without fear of stupidity lol!

I don't really blame them for hiding. I mean, most of us play games in order to relax, and I imagine being swarmed by about a hundred hard-up guys in an MMO would be very offputting. I don't think that most guys will ever grow up to such a level as to be able to play online with a girl, and not focus much of their attention on her, but I really don't understand it. Yeah, it might be a relatively rare phenomenon, but just get over it. People are people. Doesn't matter who they are, where they're from or what gender they are. Treat them as equals, pay them out when you kill them, and offer humble beggings of mercy when they thrash you.

Here's hoping one day, acceptance will become the norm.

I love the point about MMOs. I can imagine that, it would resemble moths being attracted to a flame.

Actually when I play in Home, I use a female avatar. Why you ask? Because the female avatars are a hell of a lot nicer to look at than the male ones. So I spent some time crafting as beautify an Avatar as I could. Now when I'm in home I turn off all the communication features, unless I am with a group of friends, but it's truly hilarious to watch the avatars of other gamers react to my avatar. I swear there must be 63 hard up guys in a Home space sometimes. It really is like moths to a flame. I don't punk them by flipping to a male avatar, there'd be no point. But it's hilarious to leave the controller for a minute or three and return to find her (my Avatar) surrounded by guys all trying desperately to get the attention of I'm not sure what.

So, if you are ever in Home and see a decent looking female avatar who looks not unlike she sprang forth from some JRPG, with a screen name that looks familiar, you'll know who it is.

I also usually use a female avatar in Home (and frequently RPGs like Oblivion), for the same reason.

The rude behavior has mostly petered out, though I still get friend requests from people before they've even said hello. Dude, at least chat me up first. ; P

Highlander, I tried sending a friend request to The Highlander a while back and the person said he didn't know PSXExtreme, so I guessed you used a different PSN ID. If you or any other regular wants to befriend me, please do.

Personally, I have no problem with losing to a woman. More power to them.

No, if my wife is anything to go by - and she is fairly typical - girl gamers take less than a month of crap online before the mics go off, the communications get turned off and that's that. Home is no exception. Male avatars in Home are as likely to be girl gamers in disguise as female avatars are to be something other than girls.

Yeah, I first went into Home just before they cut off the voice, and it was just too pathetic to watch & listen to the huge circles of idiots trying to hit up the women avatars there.

If I were to start playing online, I'd have no problem playing along with, or, against a female.
Just as long as she didn't throw it in my face every 2 seconds that she whupped my a$$, LOL

i think i have at least four girls in my friend list, but most of them are from Canada, i do trust them playing shooters to watch my back, theyre good team players but im over 25 im sure my maturity level its a lot higher than most of the teens that play shooters freaking out when a girl TALKS in the lobby, its like they never heard one before hahaha....

I say amen to you Ben on that last little bit! It's a revelation! Lol I guess I'm one of the very few girl gamers who take absolute pride in being one. I find that some of the crap we get online (especially CoD) does make me want to give up the mic, and let it gather dust while I play contently, gender anonymous... But, I feel that if you're a girl gamer and you're good, be proud because you come out on top of the a**hole who made the smart comment.
I've had many a kitchen comments, but they begin to take them back once the guys realize that girls are just as good as they are! However, I will say that the sheer number of guys that try to hook up with me on psn because I'm a girl playing mw2 greatly gets old. But, it's still funny to listen to a few of the guys cry when they realize I'm a girl on the number 1 spot :)

Overall, I'm proud to admit I'm a girl gamer and never back down from a challenge :)

Considerng that you have commented here since at least August, you should already know that the only comments that are held for moderator approval are the ones containing links. If a message is incorrectly detected as containing a link, it will also be held, by the software. It's nothing to do with anything else.

Sad but true, this doesn't only apply to girls though. I don't need to hear childish crap either, I've only started playing with a mic recently and only with friends.

It's a shame that this stereotype is so strong, hope people realise (not just girls, hell everybody) that there are mature guy gamers out there.

Me and my friends play with girl gamers online, it was in MW2 and now in Black Ops, we always worked as a team. It's very fun to play games with females, and it gets hysterical when stuff happens in the game, good times.

My girlfriend is a gamer.. Which is awesome.
Well, she's not as much of a gamer as I am, but she loves JRPGs, Beat 'Em Ups and MMORPGs.

I also have quite a few female gamer friends.
They're definitely out there.

Just an FYI,
there's also a "Dr. Trash Talk" voice changing gizmo for the 360 in my Xbox gaming collection, so I expect they also would have a PS3 model too.

And I also own a GameDR "Smack Talk device in my collection too, that sits between the controller & the mic.
It has 5 prerecorded sounds & voices on it, with the ability to re-record anything you want, and using who ever's female voice too.

BTW, I'll never use either one of them, just wanted to add them into my gaming collections.

Girls have smaller hands compared to the guys depending on height and age, what I mean by this is that people with smaller hands like girls, at times they can do better in gaming.

OMFG!!!! Thank You BEn. Ive been waiting so long for someone to say this. Its total BS. Guys don't always treat girl gamers with respect. I always have, in fact I go fricken ecstatic, then I jus wanna hear about all her gaming experiences and share sum with her.

Its not all our fault tho, some of them are just a bunch of bitches, they love games to bits, but they think of all guy gamers as immature assholes, then they go for their complete opposites, while never even bothering to get to kno us. It sux, all I want is a girlfriend I got something in common with (FFS, is that really so much to ask?) and the one true gamer girl I know is the latter type as I explained above (she only likes me as a friend, fuck! I hate that)

The situation is extremely unfortunate. It can only be fixed if:

1. We, the guy gamers, start behaving maturely, and encourage the same in our fellow guy gamers as much as we can.

2. More and more female gamers come out of the hiding to break the stereotype. Once girl gamers become commonplace, guys will not behave as ridiculously as they do today.

However, any platform that brings together both sexes will ALWAYS encourage some amount of flirting, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Both these points are dependent on each other and complement each other - its a vicious circle.

I recently bought a wheel and an Xlerator wheel stand for GT5 and asked my sister to come check it out. We rent a place together because it's easier on both of us financially, so she was going to see it sooner or later. I didn't want to be interrupted by her laughing at me if she walked in during a race, so I told her to go ahead and get it over with. To my surprise she didn't make fun of me.

She told me yesterday that she was having a conversation with one of her co-workers about GT5 and how she wanted to try out my set up. Her co-worker, who is also a female, said that she and her husband have the game and play often. A male customer walked in on the conversation and instead of joining in, he interrupted it by not being able to get over the fact that they were female.

I think if males want to see more females on the scene, they need to accept them as gamers first. As gamers we claim to hate stereotyping, but some males in gaming are guilty of it when it comes to gender.

lol at the topic.

i find females all the time that like to play video games.... wheter they 1st play them with me or they been doing it. its a great benefit normally after kooling with them u want to sit back light up or drink a couple beers then turn ya system on then ya lady talks bout playing it puts a smile on my face.

i was surprised on the day i bought GT5 cause i stay in Brooklyn NY bestduy aka do or die, the amount of females i seen in gamestop was surprising & they looked good. aint nothing like koolin wit ya lady & she enjoys doing what u like thats trill. i hope i find a asian & indonesian female that enjoy playin games before i die (jus wanna have females from all over i dont discriminate or hate any ethnicity color or race).

jus know the VGG are out here & easy to find.

i work in a gamestop, when attractive women come in alone i just assume they're buying games for their boyfriends or little brothers. When less attractive girls come in with 'new moon' t-shirts (and yes this is a specific customer) i'm like ooooh you're the one who's gonna be playing suikoden.

Thank you! I like to connect with other gamer moms out there but it is sometimes hard when they think I am just a creep hitting on them. One time I was playing MAG and saw the squad kick 3 other players because they had female names or voices. I stayed on because they didn't know I was a female. Very sad. Obviously Call of Duty realizes the market is changing. I love their Black Ops commercial with a girl and a professionally dressed woman both in it. It is funny when I go to buy or rent a game with my 11 year old son. They try to help me and tell me about the game or make recommendations. Funny thing is I know as much or more than they do about whatever I am there for.

Everyone who works at those places aren't very informed on what they are doing. My little brother knows more than them, and me as well.

Best Buy is just like that as well. I was asking one of the people who worked at the game section do you have the Tritton AX 720's, she replied "I have no idea what that is" But it's everyone i run into nowadays that don't know, and I'm wondering why they are even in that department.

True true. I was in university still when the first EB Games came to my hometown one summer. I applied for a summer job there, and they actually told me they aren't interested in people who know alot about games. They want salespeople.

Makes sense to a certain extent, I guess, but I also try to avoid EBgames now. (Not just for that reason, but it is one)

I have plenty of games with multiplayer content but I don't play that aspect of them very often. I don't really feel the need to be reminded of how many racists, sexists, and homophobes are out there when I'm just trying to play Bioshock or whatever. Even when it's not people saying offensive things it's morons babbling or singing. All my games that aren't Platinumed are the ones with multiplayer.

After what I experinced last night, I'd loved to be able to play with gamers that were mature (male or female). Some of the eight year olds I have played against are really bazaar. I bought a mic a few months back just so I could mute some of the garbage that was comimg from the mouths of these juveniles. Are the parents listening? My daughter likes to watch her dad play but doesn't care for the garbage talk.

This article has me so confused. I mean it might just be cause I don't post on the site but being a female gamer I'm like "huh... when have girls been hiding?" It's just awkward to come across cause I've met many other girl gamers on Home and I work at GameStop so for me it's just awkward to see "my people" being talked about like we don't exist. Most girls I know don't hide the fact that they are girls. It just makes it more difficult when they get called out or whatever.

I've also met some girls on shooters so you know, it's not too uncommon.

I'm a female gamer. Have been since, I don't know, the late 80's. (Yes, I realize I'm dating myself.) I'm really tired of getting treated like I'm a novelty every time I go into a game store, or talked down to because the boys working there assume that I don't know anything about games. The arrogance is a real turn-off.

I have zero interest in playing online because of the rampant immaturity I've seen. I got burnt too many times in the early days of Battle.Net, and it's just gone downhill from there. I can't play FPS because of motion sickness, but I often play wingman for my husband. We're both turned off by the players we keep running into online, so we play offline more often than not. Like smzdt76, the ones we don't have platinums for are the games with multiplayer.
