New Tomb Raider Announced, Young Lara Featured

The reboot of the Devil May Cry franchise is simply called "Devil May Cry" or "DMC." The fresh Tomb Raider? ...you guessed it.

Today, Square-Enix has announced a new game from Crystal Dynamics, Tomb Raider. It deals with a young and inexperienced Lara Croft who finds herself in a Robinson Crusoe-like situation at the start of her harrowing adventure. Perhaps the developers are trying to explain how Lara became such a bad-ass survival and action/acrobatics expert; said the press release:

"After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was traveling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive.

Here begins the first adventure for a young and inexperienced Lara Croft in a story which charts the journey of an ordinary woman who finds out just how far she must go in order to stay alive."

If you're trying to get a picture of the game in your head, maybe it'll be tougher than you think. Crystal Dynamics boss Darrell Gallagher said quite simply, "Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider." He goes on to call it a "character-defining journey like no other," so he has managed to pique our curiosity.

Tomb Raider will make its worldwide debut in the January issue of Strategy Informer, which will be available to the public on December 11. We're definitely hoping for a quality reboot; we haven't seen much of Lara this generation, although we reassert that Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is one of the most complete, accomplished downloadable titles of 2010.  Stay tuned for more on Tomb Raider.

Hopefully this works out for them. Tomb Raider has kinda been off for the last few games but still fun. I hope it doesn't suck, Id like to play another Tomb Raider game.

There is no question that Tombraider 2 was the best of the franchise. The snowmobiles, Yeti, trampolines, Sharks, Opera House, Venice, wall of china etc. were the best. If they can recreate that magic then I will be the first to buy this. I played just about every other tombraider game after that and none of them could compare. Honestly speaking, if the producers/designers were on Naughty Dogs level. The Tombraider franchise would destroy Uncharted. Lets face it, who would you rather look at while playing? Lara or Nate Drake? However, if Chloe Frazier had her own game I would buy that over Nate and Lara. Lara's body just cant touch Chloes. Anyway, its good to hear that they haven't given up on Lara. She's an icon. Hopefully they will do her justice with this new installment. That Guardian of light was a waste to me. Top down 3 quarter video games and side scrollers are played and tired. Anyway bring on some new Lara!

Not that I have doubts about this game, but what's the deal with all the reboots lately? It seems to be a new fad, and not just in gaming either.

I could clearly tell you never played Tomb Raider 4, this when the game was clearly a prequel to Tomb Raider.

anyhow argument aside, it would be interesting to see how further SE destroy this franhise as Eidos have. Still though its quite a shame that Adrian and Jermey Heath-Smith bailed on this franchise, this given the fact they really knew how to navigate this series and knew what the old school fans wanted.

Have to say I am excited for this one. I bought a PS One to play the original game. I agree with Aamzingskillz, the second game was definitely the best of the bunch. I like the direction they say they are going with the reboot. If it plays like Uncharted, I'll be even happier. I just hope they don't fail in the execution of, what I think, is a great idea. The official site, tombraider.com, shows it coming to multiple platforms, but, IMO, Lara's home is the Playstation. Keeping fingers crossed...........

i agree 100% with that. i love the Lara Croft games, not because you're looking at a certain someone from behind all game when things get boring (ha), but also because there is a good story-telling aspect to it. not to mention the action always gets crazy every now and then

Why can't we just have a Lara that hunts treasure for the sake of it, as she has done in the past? See, this is why I dislike Hollywood. It is already having an adverse effect on the games industry with the constant need for reboots. I'd be happy if this were filed as an original idea, I'd probably even be happy if this were considered a new entry into the franchise, but using the word 'reboot' is just annoying.
Peace.

Looks like she's going to get rather messed up. Going to put her through some of the hell Kratos had to endure, are we? Going to kill off someone she loves perhaps? Get her hand blown off and replaced by cybernetics? Come on guys, stop teasing! Which one will it be?

multiplatform, not interested. I been wanting a new tomb raider game for a while. I want the best that Video games can give you and so far Sony is the only people that can do that.

I don't like how this game sounds, I want a game that plays like uncharted but totally unique, I want her to be haunting for treasures like the original.

well there are still hopes for my other reboots, Jet moto, Crash and MGS 1 and 2.
For MGS 1 and 2 I want it with the same story line but with voice acting and amazing HD graphics.

This makes sense. The Tombraider franchise has been slowly dying a horrible death. But then Uncharted comes along and shows that the treasure hunter games are still in demand. I'd love to see this series revitalized. For how it began, it definitely deserves more effort put into then what the last few installments have been.

Although if Marky Mark does a have decent playing as Drake in the new Movie... How much you want to bet that we're going to see a Drake and Lara joint Hollywood adventure somewhere down the road....I hope not, but you guys know that someone in LA is already typing up a crappy script...There's already been discussion of who will replace Jolie...

I can picture it now...Drake and Croft getting ready to get into a a little PG-13 Hot and heavy petting, when Harrison Ford swings through the window on his Indiana Jones Whip yelling "No Drake! You can't nail this top heavy woman! She's your sister and I'm your Father!!"

Or something like that....Oh the horrors...

yeah, it's a number of things: the dirty unkempt hair; her strong brow ridge and harder edged nose curvatures. When it comes to feminine portrayal in the media, these features aren't norms.

The lips, though, aren't masculine.
She has a tom-boy'ish look to her from what I can see. She just needs that backwards baseball cap =p

I was kind of surprised that there wasn't a bushido blade in the Move release titles...the POV mode in that game was original for it's time, it would have been a perfect compelment for the Move...

And yeah bring on the Onimusha..another I wouldn't mind seeing is another proper version of Tenchu...You know, from back when Activision put some effort into making a game.

@Temjin001 I agree Shinobi was butt harder than NG but it would be sick to see what it would look like the PS3 same goes for NightShade it was a pretty good game also it definitely had allot of potenial.

@CH1N00K Bushido Blade was my favorite fighting game It would be nice to see it make a come back because the fighting game genre is lacking in the variety department only games you can chose from are SSFIV ,Tekken 6, or Blaze Blue. A Tenchu reboot would be awesome if they made it right of course it started sucking after the games went multi-plat. I really don't need say much about why the need to reboot Onimusha I'm sure you already know the reasons.

Shinobi brought back black holes of death: miss a jump and NO!
It also had a camera that was impossible to master. WHen people complain about NG's camera it suggests to me that they haven't learned how to control it right. BUt Shinobi (thinks of Moth Boss) you're making leaps of faith at times.
Nightshade was tons easier. I still liked it though.

I hope those two get a HD release for PS3.
