Update Adds Mechanical Damage To Gran Turismo 5
Kazunori Yamauchi and Co. have expressed their long-standing dedication to making Gran Turismo 5 better, and yet another patch has arrived.
This big enhancement comes in at a hefty 149MB and will update GT5 to v1.03, which is a must-do for any hardcore fan. The biggest addition is the new option for mechanical damage in online races, which is bound to make the simulated racing experience even more authentic...and even more challenging, as a direct result. Once you have the update, you can change the settings as you see fit:
-- “None” – No mechanical damage.
-- “Light” – Mechanical parts can be damaged, but will “automatically be repaired after a short time has passed.”
-- “Heavy” – Mechanical damage will be more severe, and can only be repaired by making a pit stop. Damaged parts will be indicated with on-screen icons.
Yamauchi has often said that GT5 will continue to progress with the help of such updates, and if future improvements are like this, racing aficionados ought to be satisfied. Although one could complain that such features should've been included in the final product - especially given the lengthy development time - we won't complain about what we have. We're just interested to see what GT5 will be like in a few months time...

This is why we need PSNID specific cloud based game saves.

Uncopyrighted materials will be "copied" to the new PS3, but copyrighted material will be "moved," which of course means that you'll have it on the new PS3, but will be erased from the old PS3.

Sony should fix the game save backup issue by locking copyrighted game files it to your Account/PSN id or offer a online backup service for them. My 4 times and currently Ylod PS3 has a few files that are locked to it and one of them is only about 1 hours play away from a Plat trophy. Bloomin cheap-ass Sony solder in my YloD :(

hen they started talking about the PlayStation Plus service, cloud based game save backups was one of the things people thought would come. still no sign of it.
I can't honestly see why developers are restricting game saves to one console and PSN ID only. Restricting to the PSN ID is more than enough to prevent any cheating by exchanging game saves.
Ah well, all I can say is; Sony, please implement a PSN cloud based game save feature, now. Thanks awfully.

Oh yeah, I hope all the updates are free, I waited patiently for this game and also didn't complain. I deserve a treat ^-^
I hope they keep building on this until the online community is that of Forzas. Although Forza is not the superior sim, it does have a vast online community.
I wish they add bikes, just make it happen please PD. Tourist Trophy was pretty impressive as always with PD. They could spend more time on each bike, upscaling to maz :)

The online component is extremely WEAK in GT5! I regularly set up races and the way it's organized is *very* loose. I mean, I set up a race, but it's up to me to set the regulations, but I only have maybe 15 characters in the online game to describe my game. Other players can't see the details until they actually go into my game. So I have people jumping in and out, cuz they're trying to find cars that meet my game specs.
Not only that, but when we do race, we're not racing for anything. I mean, nothing is really at stake. So, most people just goof around, cuz it doesn't make any difference to them.
Whatever happened to online game modes like in Prologue where they have set races where people join in and race together? They could have just improved on that in GT5, and allow for more variations of races, and log your win/losses in your profile. It's so simple!
Sorry for the rant, but I feel it's a legitimate complaint with the online component of GT5.

And they need a leaderboard and on-line rankings... A on-line spec with points.

So in summary this has put me off of starting or getting far in a few games and I would think twice about buying such games, in case for whatever reason, the saves can't be backed up and something corrupts/wipes the data.

--Even having a monetary system would be cool for placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. To buy online cosmetic upgrades for your car.
--Or putting up pink slips for your car...or bet money on a race.
---Just have something to give people incentive to stop goofing off by going backwards on a race track and trying to slam into people.

I know, Kotaku usually blows. But the second video on this link is down right hilarious. I couldn't help but laugh very hard at how silly it was.
THe first video sort of sucks.
The third one does make GT5's AI look bad, though. ugh

Again, people will never be satisfied as a whole, but judging by the comments on gtplanet, there are some bitter opinions that boggle my mind. This is simply fantastic support for the gamers and the overall game itself. I'm wondering what we can expect next! Sure, what we're getting is grade A stuff despite what most consider to be the saga of completion for what some tout as an "incomplete" game. Let's face the facts, though, many people will spend far too much money repairing their rides rather than upgrading or buying new ones. Personally, damage in career mode would upset me, so I hope if this is added I can turn it off.
Between the race to the finish and successfully overtaking AI, that sometimes is as determined as the player to win, I can see massive flaws in what sounds like a great idea on paper (or in some stubborn minds). If I were to exit races and entire events just to repair my ride, I would get sick of it... Fast!
Just an opinion..

I like this because it makes the level of difficulty ramp up as your ability ramps up.

However, one place where the AI will do this regardless ofyour driving style is during license tests. They will hit you from behind, and the game disqualifies you for it!
If you have the Collector's Edition and have gone through the magazine, one of the section talks about driver etiquettes. Pity the AI can't read...

Like I say though, in races, I have only encountered the senseless aggression (aka anger) by the AI drivers in the lower level races. The AI can be aggressive in the higher levels, but it doesn't seem quite so suicidal and will try to nudge you from the track while preserving itself, where as earlier it would simply get under the rear quarter and try to drive you off the road without caring if it was losing places too.

For me personally, I'm playing a racing game like GT5 for the racing and the incredible cars, not the damage. I used to play the BTCC Touring Car racing games that Codemasters (I think it was Codemasters) did on the PS1. They modeled quite a lot of damage on the cars both visually and mechanical. As I get deeper into GT5 I am seeing more damage to the cars occur, but as yet no mechanical damage penalty. I'm not sure I want there to be any mechanical penalty, at very least I want an option to turn it (and the visual damage) off.
I honestly think that either the PD team should have spent longer making the visuals of the damage more appealing, and left out the aerodynamic and mechanical effects, or simply not done damage at all. So many people are complaining about the damage because the cars do not actually crash and crumple in a 'ralistic' manner. Try taking any car at 120MPH and slamming it into a wall, the effect will be much more Burnout Paradise than GT5. But, that's the point. Burnout Paradise makes a virtue of the crash, where GT5 makes a virtue of the physics, driving and car models. I guess PD could implement much more dramatic crash/damage effects, but to me, that isn't what Gran Turismo is for.
