Kratos Joins Mortal Kombat's Ranks

Characters from action games have often popped up in fighting titles this generation, and the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot is no exception.

According to the latest issue of OPM, as cited by Game Informer, one of the most recognizable names - and faces - in all of PlayStation gaming will be included in the fighter roster. It's Kratos from the stellar God of War series, and we're willing to bet he'll be quite the effective combatant. He won't be playable in the main story mode but he will be available in Versus mode, and he'll definitely have "his own move set, complete with fatalities." GoW creator, David Jaffe, has already commented on the inclusion on his Twitter page:

"LOVE that Kratos is in the new MK. So bummed he's not in the story portion. Heard about it from Ed at E3 this year and had to keep super mum on it but man, ****ing LOVE it. He totally fits in that world. I **** you not- on some level I feel like all the characters I work on are alive and that I have a relationship with them and I can tell you, if I know Kratos- and I do!- he's ****ing LOVING his time in the MK Universe. I bet he makes a **** ton of friends there. He should pull Zeus in and ****ing leave his ass there!"

Yes, it's true that Kratos most certainly fits the atmosphere. Furthermore, it seems even more fighters for Mortal Kombat have been confirmed, but these probably aren't surprising: Goro, Quan Chi, Stryker, Noob Saibot, Sindel, Kabal, Smoke, Shang Tsung and Ermac. Ah, the memories...Goro's annoying reach, Noob Saibot's even more annoying teleportation, Smoke's...smoke, etc. Yes, we all played MK at one point in time; will the reboot rekindle our love affair with the series?

Kratos in MK is meant to be. They could've found some way to include him in the story though. That would've taken it through the roof. This next MK is going to give the other fighters a run for their money..

Well thats unfair, Kratos could kick the crap out of any MK combatant =p

Kratos is becoming the star guest appearance in fighters these days.
I wonder who the guest guy will be for 360 users?
Master Chef?
No, I know. Alan Wake. He'd have his trusty flash light flash special move. FLASH! Stun... UPPERCUT! "haha excellent"

I heard a rumour that the 360 guest-star will be that big dude with no neck from the Gears of War games. I also heard a rumour that the 360 will get nothing and that an exclusive character will be exclusive to the PS3.

In the words of Scott Pilgrim, I expect nothing but an epic epic of epicness.

After Kratos slaughtered the Soul Calibur crowd, he'll now unleash the Blades of Chaos (or should I spell that Khaos) upon the Mortal Kombatants. This has guaranteed my Day 1 buy for the new MK.

Mortal Kombat is one of those franchises need to be put out to pasture and just not exist anymore. The franchise is crappy..always have and always will be, but in the Boon should just stop trying to compete with Street Fighter, Tekken , and VF.

Mortal Kombat is my favourite fighting series. Yes, the combat system pales in comparison to other fighters these days but that's what this reboot's for. I actually thoroughly enjoyed MK Vs. DC and I think I'll miss some of the 3D aspects of the fighting. I think that MK has the best mythology, hands down, out of all the fighters. I think Boon should maybe hand over the scripting reigns to someone else, though.

Fulgore baby, it was the most epic of moments when you pulled off those unstoppable combos. Too bad they were impossible to do on the N64 controller, and the SNES version was fun but way downgraded.

There's the one fighter, I remember playing a bit, who's concept I really liked. It was the one where you can morph/transform into an animal hybrid. I think it was called Bloody Roar? I may be interested if they did a reboot of that with a massive roster (maybe having all of the characters from the other games while incorporating a few more). I know it may never happen but.... it's not impossible.

Raiden will become playable once you've scored a bronze or better in all of the game’s virtual training missions.

As for whether it's a PS3 exclusive or multi=plat, I'm not sure yet.

"Considering I place your age at about 20, you were never anywhere near the arcades where it was a worldwide phenomenon"

I'm 32 and practically grew up playing arcade games and still do till this day. In fact its still a ritual of mine(as it have been since 1990)to stop off at an arcade after school or work. To further add, I was never cluelss when it came to the release of an arcade title given the fact I knew people and had family members who was directly involved with the distributio and purchase of arcade machines like a brother of mine who was employed by Namco Cybertainment business.

Overall if there is this one thing I could say about the arcade scene back then and now, its the fact arcades have never lost its luster with me. In fact even till this day I find the arcade scene to be a much better place for gaming over consoles and the PC. With all that mind, I'm very well positioned to judge Mortal Kombat.

"I have to agree with Ben. You must still have been in diapers when I was waiting in line to play Mortal Kombat II (1 was good, but 2 was so much better!)"

Do you honestly believe I'm the only one who have a critical view of Mortal Kombat? In the shoryuken community, Tekken Zaibatsu community ,the Evo Championships, the core fighting scene; you'll find TONS of individual's both new and seasoned like myself who share the same thoughts about Mortal Kombat. Many of these individuals might play the MK games, but deep down in thier views are exactly like mine.

I'm not going to knock your opinion. However, I have to disagree..MK doesn't need to "not exist anymore" and it's not a crappy franchise. When the first MK came out, almost every person was line up to play it in arcades. Why do you think it was such a sensation on home consoles?

Furthermore, MK II was far better then the first and once again there were lines at the arcades to play that one as well. The sequel also garnered big attention on consoles. Sales numbers don't lie.

In the communities you named I'd expect to see people who have different views of MK. I mean why would you be on a different website dedicated to a tekken or SF and rave about MK? Makes no sense. Mortal Kombat I and II were one of the best fighters out at the time and was competing very well with Street Fighter II and Super Street Fighter II. Tekken and Virtual Fighter came out later in the decade.

If you just didn't like the MK games or series you should just say that. Instead of calling it crappy and doesn't need to exist. The only MK's that was a failure in my book is MK 4.

Okay, I can believe you are 32. I suppose that the 78 represents your birth year.

Regardless of age;

Your comment "The franchise is crappy..always have and always will be" makes me believe you have NEVER played the game or simply was never good at it which may be the source of the hate towards the game. If you are the non-violent gamer type who doesn't like the sight of blood, then I could understand your view of not wanting to play it. Though, this would give you nothing to stand on with your comparisons with other titles in the same genre.

Mortal Kombat was the first game to glorify violence in such a way that that made blood beautiful. It was a fighter for "grown-ups".

I remember when the first MK went to consoles, the Sega version was the one to get because blood was RED, not that puke green from the SNES version.

Add to that: While everyone else was playing "Super Street Fighter II Championship Edition Turbo" I was playing Killer Instinct, Tekken, or MKIII. Street Fighter lost it's appeal when it tried to copy MK by adding finishing moves/combos that weren't nearly as good as the Killer Instinct or Mortal Kombat games. To say that competition isn't good, is just ignorant. Every product needs competition, including your favorite fighters. Otherwise they'll evolve slower than molasses if even at all.

A2K78, Ed Boon in a recent article directly addressed the purpose behind MK's existence. He doesn't intend to compete with the hardcore fighters. He attributes a margin of MK's success to the accessibility that the series has maintained over the years. He believes that when a game is made too complicated it may shun the wider populace of gamer. MK is not so much about depth as it is enjoyable entertainment.

I could pick apart and ridicule MK's various combat systems, but I try not to because I know that's not MK's angle and It's not the reason why I choose to play it at times. My personal favorite MK fighting system is UMK3. It has balancing issues up the wazzu but it still entertains me a lot.

@AK
sounds like you're just someone who got his a$$ handed to him everytime you played mortal kombat. I'm not a big fan of the game but i give credit where its due. Sounds to me like you had one too many sweep kicks in your life that you were never able to get back up. never liked it when people did that in game but i'll gladly do it to you just to see you're reaction.

I remember I used to walk down my local bowling alley to play UMK3. One of my favorites in the series maybe cause I didn't play the later games expect for Trilogy and Deception.

Ah...the good 'ol days of smashing the living daylights out of countless keyboards playing Mortal Kombat 4 with friends on PC.

I quite liked the previous entry in the series, Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. Gameplay was pretty neat, and with the exception The Flash, the characters were very well balanced balanced.

In fact, it was one of the games that made me give in and buy the PS3. I bought that game and GTA IV along with my console.

Even though the latest Street Fighter games have come pretty close to attaining fighting nirvana, I sincerely look forward to the reboot.

Two things i hate about this lol! Well maybe not hate but am more concerned about.

How will kratos look? I mean in GOW3 he is with out question te most detailed and realistic character to ever grace a console. They cant gimp that part. In fact maybe sony santa monica should handle his part of the character modeling.

Second: does this mean our beloved character will grace his presence on the 360 console also? Or is this exclusive to the PS3 version? Its weird that sony would pimp him out like that. ;) then again i dont know the actions it would take to stop it from happening either, or if its even a big deal!

But all in all this is awesome! I cant wait. I hope he has some combos like he does in the series! Hes BA, he will be my usable character all the time!

EDIT: im not sure but it seems Kratos, is a exclusive character. I didnt notice anywhere where that was clarified, but that would seem to be the case! No longer a concerb i guess.

They'll probably need approval from SCEA as far as the depiction of Kratos in the game goes.

Just like including Pepsi in a movie needs approval on how it's going to appear in the movie.

No way in hell Kratos is on the 360 version, they will get their own exclusive character kinda like they did with Vader and Yoda (But they won't get Kratos as 3 dollar DLC)

Well that's cool, but if they want MY money, they're going to have to put Kratos in the next MK movie.

I'll be happy, but it only depends on what weapons kratos is using. I freaking love the artemis blade. Don't get me wrong his chains and other weapons are wicked, but that has always been my favorite weapon of his.

Is Quan Chi in this one, cuz Kratos might have found a brother from another mother.

MK a brutal fighting game and Kratos a brutal guy?
At least we know it will go well.

Is Kratos exclusive to PS3 then?
I'll assume he is since it's Kratos.

Sucks he won't have his own story. and If they try the same thing thing from MK/DC it'll be pushing it. Perhaps he can be a Challenger to the Elder Gods?? 1st the Greek gods Now the MK elder gods? I like it.
