CliffyB: PS3 Owners Shouldn't Worry About Bulletstorm
Developer People Can Fly have a lot of confidence in Bulletstorm, and we're psyched for the insanity, too.
But you know, as Epic Games is in charge and they're predominantly an Xbox 360 developer, the PlayStation 3 faithful have voiced their concern. Sometimes, we often think designers should simply stick with the platform with which they feel the most comfortable, and focus on getting the most out of that platform. But Epic boss Cliff Bleszinski said PS3 owners needn't worry about Bulletstorm. In a video interview shown at CVG, CliffyB reassures PS3 owners and promises they won't get some lackluster port.
"When you see the game on PS3, you'll see the textures look crisp, the depth of field looks great, the particles look amazing - it will very much take advantage of what the PS3 is capable of."
Some naysayers will claim they've heard such propaganda before because that's all it is: propaganda. In the end, the developer doesn't make good on the promise. However, that's not always the case; we refer you to Platinum Games, a team that made the mistake of letting Sega port Bayonetta to the PS3. They then addressed the issue with Vanquish, a game that turned out pretty freakin' great on both the PS3 and 360.
So yeah, we'll believe 'em for now. Besides, we're really hoping Bulletstorm is just...grand.

Nitpicking, yes, but it still discouraging.
Given UE3's track record it's hard not to be skeptical. Even when a developer tries to offer their words of comfort.
"When you see the game on PS3, you'll see the textures look crisp, ..."
Okay, crisp textures weren't ever the problem. How about texture draw-in, Cliffy?
"... the depth of field looks great, the particles look amazing - it will very much take advantage of what the PS3 is capable of."
Yes, depth of field was new fangled in DOA2: HC, 10+ years ago. Today it's standard fare and hardly something I was concerned about. Besides can his depth of field really compete with U2's more sophisticated implementation? And Behemoth's blast in FFIX has some amazing looking particles =p
Sorry, he isn't quelling the real concerns that most UE3 engine games are known to suffer from on PS3: screen tearing, pop 'skip-hiccuping, texture draw-in, erratic frame rates and the general obscurity of AA.
Anyway, the game looks good Cliffy, but I can live without the coddling.

I'm more interested in knowing whether they will ever be bringing Gears over to the PS3. Outside of Alan Wake, it's the only 360 exclusive I'm interested in, and unlike the latter, the IP isn't owned by M$. Please, Cliffy?
Peace.

That last part right there is the main reason why developers like Epic and Valve should be more PS3 centric than 360 centric. As PC-centric developers that embrace mods on the PC, you would think they would embrace that ability on the PS3 since the PS3 is a more-open platform than the 360.
It seems Valve has finally seen the light concerning this, which is why the PS3 version of Portal 2 is going to support Steam and all the free updates and mods Valve will push out for the game to the PS3.

What you write, doesn't change the fact that Epic ported the game to Ps3 first and the 360 later on.
And it also doesn't change the fact that the PS3 version is better than the 360 version. I'm just trying to point out that Epic can develop for the PS3.
