Call Of Duty Tops "Relationship Killing" Poll, Women Ignored

Newspaper reporter: "Hey, I just found these poll results about video games."

Newspaper editor: "Nobody cares."

Newspaper reporter: "No, it proves games are evil."

Newspaper editor: "Really? Go with it."

Newspaper reporter: "I dunno...the numbers are pretty flimsy..."

Newspaper editor: "I said go with it."

Yet another newspaper has found a way to question the gamer lifestyle; it's The Daily Mail and as noted by PCR, the paper cited a report by One Poll that "clearly" shows how games wreck relationships. The numbers are really super incriminating: about 5% of gamers admit that their hobby cost them a relationship, and about half of women say they're "jealous" of the time their partners spend gaming. It also says that 1 in 10 men have admitted to choosing a game over sex. These results were statistically strong enough to prompt a spokesperson to say:

"It seems like a games console often means there are three people in a relationship. It's a bit sad if the virtual world is taking precendence over the real world."

And the top relationship busting game? Call of Duty. It's followed by Football Manager (what?) and Grand Theft Auto. Now, I'm sorry, I'm all for learning more about a particular group or culture or whatever, especially if you're not exactly "in-the-know." But are you kidding me? Did anyone else see those numbers? Hey, do this- replace games with sports. Go right ahead. Let me know the percentage of avid sports fans who admit to relationship troubles due to a football game.

Better yet, take any hobby on planet earth and drop it into the poll, and see if the numbers aren't higher. What we enjoy doing by ourselves can have a negative impact on anything we do with other people; it's called logic and...well, math (i.e., amount of time in any given day). As for the bit about "half the women" upset at their partner's playing...yeah, well, no offense to the ladies, but about 90% of them can find a way to be upset with any hobby at any time.

And this is nationwide news, people. That quote and those results. Yaaaay.

Last time I checked, a degree in journalism (or diploma....) doesn't also confer upon these individuals a honorary degree in psychology.

And it shows....

These folks clearly have no idea how to interpret polls nor how to properly conduct and select an appropriate sample.

Now that you mention it... what was the sample? And why study video games only?

By the way... know what I did last night BEFORE I played 2 hours worth of video games and after I got home from work?

With the wife, did some chores and Christmas shopping, went out for dinner (just the two of us), came home and (skip ahead skip ahead), then watched The Mentalist together, then she went to bed. (She gets up 2 hours earlier than me for work)

And guess what? As Ben said, without moderation or discipline, any hobby can become a sort of addiction and take precedence over the things that really matter. Heck, my mother still complains that she loses time with my dad to the Raptors and Blue Jays. She even used to joke about how he should just go ahead and marry Roy Halladay. (my favorite ball player, too, actually) lol

I dunno, it just doesn't make sense why anyone would try to survey about video games specifically. What was their hypothesis? And how did they get to the point where they decided to research that?

If you ask me, this is the sort of thing that springs up from someone setting out to prove games are bad without a fair scientific motive in mind, and they often skip many steps in the scientific method...

I could go on about many more issues here, but the simple fact of the matter is, this type of study is just so incredibly porous that you have to WANT the conclusion to be true in order to accept such a conclusion.

Poll results equals not a scientific study (or method).

Besides this is the daily Mail in the UK, their readership delights in stories that paint video games as evil, that's what they think already and they just want to have it confirmed for them.

And as we all know, when you are writing the questions for a Poll, the way you ask your questions will very much shape the answers. So if you have an agenda for your poll, you can generally achieve the desired result.

Tired of these polls that have no clue about the life of a gamer. Many of us are gamers but not to the extent were we'll choose the games over anything or everything. Especially with those of us who have children. You have to find time for your gaming. Which is something I'm sure most of us do.

We could make a poll about women and shopping and how that effects relationships and the results would be similar. Gaming keeps some out of trouble as well. Iono guess the world we live in the uninformed will attempt to trash anything when they have nothing to do or story to write about..

Don't you love how journalists and news organizations tend to put a spin on things to make something sound bad when in actuality if compared to other mediums is only a minor issue (if you even want to call it an issue).

That crap irritates me, almost as much as worthless spammers.

Football manager is a soccer team management game kind of like a more detailed Madden franchise mode only based on soccer and not the NFL. It's a British game, and the Daily Mail is a British paper, and PCR is a British site, so football to them, is soccer to the US.

Second Life is creepy no matter what. I got roped into it by a buddy of mine and it stayed on my PC for all of 2 hours. It only lasted that long because it took that long to set up and get going before someone propositioned me to go back to his place and test out his love bed.

I like paintball. But shooting isn't the best part. I love the tactical side of a great paintball course. I love jumping and ducking for cover and running... the entire experience.

It's more like big-people tag though. lol! Just shooting a gun is pretty meh for me. (Of course, I've only shot a hunting rifle of my uncles. We don't have guns like they do in America.)

Any hobby that is time consuming and demands a high degree of focus will do this. The extreme focus will cause the gamer to ignore their significant other. The time consumed is time that could otherwise be spent in bed - of course.

BTW Football Manager is a soccer team management game, think Franchise mode in Madden, on steroids but based on soccer, not American Football.

The Daily Mail is a British daily newspaper, a so called tabloid, and is well known for sensationalizing this kind of thing in the guise of reporting for the public good...and not well known as a great source of actual news. Their readership is older and more conservative, and more Conservative, and this kind of story plays well with them.

Jesus Christ Highlander - it seems like your scope of informative knowledge is limitless sometimes! I suspect you may be some type of android jacked into a gaming data base. Not even human. Maybe a cyborg. Anyway, to the contrary on the subject. One could argue that gaming at least keeps the man at home instead of running the streets. If he's home on his PS3 at least his wife/girlfriend knows where he is and what he's doing right? I mean, if you take away gaming more guys would be out of the house and in the streets chasing women. Just a thought.

I'm not being sexist, but every girl is selfish. Your time (male) is their time. Prime example is my relationship. My schedule is based around my girlfriends which means my class hours and work hours have to match her work hours because I have to take her to/pick her up from work. When I have a class that causes me to pick her up late, she's mad at me. Why? I don't know if she understands, but I have priorities too and on top of that...I'm going out of my way to pick her up and I don't even ask for gas...lol Seriously though, this is just one of many things I find ungreatful about her. But when the shoe is on the other foot, I'm (the male) is suppose to have patience and not have a problem. Every man knows women want it there way. Like my Dad says "Don't argue with a women, you only end up stressing yourself out and making things worse for you and only you". Women always get the last word and there's no way around it. It's life. Pretty unfair. Be easier to deal with if I got those special favors every night...lol

There was recently an article in the paper about the theater i work at. 90% of the article was just incorrect, and it was stuff my boss plainly told the "journalist" in their interview. Not even important stuff, just wrong information for no reason at all. Then people wonder why print media is slowly dying...
Thats not to say there are less idiots on the internet, not at all. But its much easier to find the good, intelligent fellows (Ben, Arnold) and ignore the rest.

I watch my husband when he plays, and often play wingman for CoD, Battlefield, UC, etc. The only thing that gets on my last nerve is all is FB gaming!

I don't trust polls. They can make people answer the way they want to get the results they want. But I'm surprised they haven't inserted a "but think of the children!" yet.

call of duty has saved my marriage. after being married for 25 years we need something to do or else we have to argue with each other. so i play cod and she spends my money on the internet. simple
