Mortal Kombat Pre-Order Incentives, Special Editions

If you're a long-time Mortal Kombat fan, you're likely excited about the next installment; a fresh reboot that takes the series back to its roots.

And if you're really excited, you'll want to spring for one of the two available special editions when the game releases in April. Warner Bros. has revealed the launch details; there will be a Standard Edition, Kollector's Edition, and Tournament Edition; you know the Standard version is just the regular package, but the other two options are explained as follows:

Kollector's Edition: Sub-Zero and Scorpion figurines, collectible art book, and DLC that includes an exclusive MK Klassic costume skin and avatar costumes.

Tournament Edition: Portable fight stick and DLC listed above...limited to only 20,000 copies in North America.

Also, there are pre-order exclusives at various retailers (GameStop, Best Buy, and Amazon) that feature exclusive Klassic costume skins and original Fatalities. Dropping your deposit at GameStop nets you the original Scorpion Fatality, Best Buy gets you the Sub-Zero Fatality, and Amazon will give you the Reptile Fatality. It has also been confirmed that only the PS3 version will boast stereoscopic 3D support.

Fighting fans ought to be satisfied when this bad boy shows up.

Hmmm... Mortal Kombat was never one of my games in the arcades. I don't remember playing it much at all in the last 15 or more years. I hope there is a demo so I can try it out. I love the sword based action of Soul Calibur, but have yet to get into brawlers/fighters.

Yet another game with stereoscopic 3D...excellent.

April? Trying to copy Capcom with Street Fighter IV lol...

Anyway, it'll be a great game. Going back to the CORE of what made MK... MK.

Kratos makes this so easy for me. Will definitely buy it.

I'm excited for this game. It looks like the best MK since it's 2D days. I sort of wish the arcade stick had more of a universal button layout, but oh well. I plan on picking the game up on April 2nd =)

Yeah i cant wait for this game! Its been a while since i enjoyed a mk game and i think any fan is in for a treat!

Does the 360 support 3d? I dont know much about it and how it works and what supports it. I am really intrigued by it. At first i thiught it was a fad but at my local theater the 3d movies are selling more tickets regularly, and sony is pushing it hard for consoles. I dont think its going anywhere. Not to mention what ive seen at demos is pretty amazing. Ive been looking fr a tv recently and found some great deals but ima hold off until kz3 comes out i think, mainly cus i dont wanna fincance one.

Anyways scorpion was always my character so ill pre order at ganestop! And i dont really need the fight stick but its really good incentive!

I think the 360 does do 3D but not how the ps3 does of course...dont know much on it, but heard LG was releasing a tv to "help" the 360 do 3D. I purchased my 3D tv MAINLY for Killzone 3....and now Uncharted 3 as well ;P

One word of advice when buying a 3D TV, be ready to spend an extra $400 for the starter pack *glasses and adapter*

I think the 3D is going past being a fad....hopefully its here to stay...not saying everyone HAS to get it, just nice to have options!

@Snorge,

360 does 3D using the 1950's 3D technology - red/blue colored lenses - anaglyph 3D . the trouble is that technique causes a reduction in image quality and color fidelity and is inferior to fully stereoscopic 3D. That's how Crysis 2 will support 3D on both consoles, fully stereoscopic 3D on the PS3 and the old 560's tech anaglyph 3D on the 360.

@BigRailer

You know, as more games come with this as an option, it will be interesting to see how the adoption of 3D changes. It will be especially interesting to see how Microsoft responds since the 360 is not capable of stereoscopic 3D.

With 3D games and 3D BluRay ins stereoscopic 3D, the PS3 is interestingly placed. Whether the technology is active shutter, passive polarized lens glasses (RealD) or even something like lenticular lenses, parallax barrier or some other 3D system that works without glasses, a stereoscopic 3D video feed will be the standard for decades to come.

The PS3 is (quite ridiculously) capable of the movies and games and high definition output required for all of this, along with PSMove for game control in three dimensions. A while back I was trying to figure out how the other consoles would differentiate from the PS3 because the PS3 already had HD video, HD games (up to 1080p in some cases) and of course video download.

The addition of motion controls by both Sony and Microsoft removed one possible distinction, so now I am left wondering what major feature a future console could have that the PS3 cannot. 3D is covered. HD is covered. Digital delivery is covered. 3D motion capture/control is covered. Seriously if you were building a next gen console now, what could you put in it that would set your system apart from the PS3?

In that context, the PS3 is also moving into the more commodity pricing stage of it's life. BluRay drive costs are coming down, and will continue to drop to the level of DVD drives, manufacturing costs of the PS3 are well controlled and will continue to drop as techniques and manufacturing technology improve.

So let's say that MS decides it needs a new console in 2013. There will be no new video standard to lean on, no new digital download standards, streaming video is already covered, 1080p gaming is possible, so I guess they could make a virtue out of that (after dismissing it this generation as unnecessary - I can see some quotes being re-used).

I'm just not seeing any feature that they could hang their hat on that would justify spending on a more expensive console. The PS3 will by that time be well established in the mass market and minds of consumers with it's nice affordable price tag (assuming a $50/$100 cut by 2015). How could you persuade consumers to spend anything up to double that price for a new console that doesn't really do anything different to the PS3?

This could potentially give Sony an opportunity to wait a couple of years after Microsoft's launch to bring a PS4. If Sony were to try to launch along side Microsoft, they'd go head to head with a company that doesn't mind a suicidally expensive marketing war. That's not Sony's style, plus the PS3 would still be very viable in the market. If sony arrived a year later, as they did with the PS3, they would be seen as arriving late, which carries some negative connotations. If Sony waits more than a year after Microsoft, let's say two years, I think it would actually be better, not worse for them.

Instead of merely being late to the party, Sony would have the chance to overtake whatever MS does while leaning on the continued life of the PS3. If the PS4 builds on the technology of the PS3 (which seems likely) allowing PS3 software to be used on it, developers could continue to use their established knowledge. A PS4 launched a couple of years after a notional Microsoft next console could be a real win for Sony. They would not be seen as playing catch up since the PS3 is already capable of all the things that are required, and the PS4 would have an extra two years to mature in design and manufacture.

If the PS4 does build o PS3 technology, then it will capitalize on lower development costs for games, a wider knowledge base. Again, if the new console has full PS3 compatibility, it will dovetail very well with PS3.

I know that is a lot of speculation based on the 3D games that are coming out now. But when you start looking at the PS3 and it's capabilities, it really is difficult to see how Microsoft responds. 3D is - for the moment - one of those areas where Microsoft really doesn't have an answer - except silence or derision.

I found tons of tvs over the weekend where you buy the tv and if you include a blu-ray player and starter kit you get a discounted price.

For instance i found a 50" samsung 1080p, 3d plasma for $1500. but when u buy a blu-ray player at $200 and the starter kit for $400 with it, the new price of the tv becomes $899 and you end up spending a total of just the original price for the tv, $1500.

Not a bad deal!

I hope its hear to stay too. But im hearing more and more bout the tvs that dont need glasses! Ugh do i wait?

Yes highlander i agree with you completely. I honestly dont thibk we will see a new console til atleast 2014 because of this dilemma. I really think we will see a ps3.5 an a xbox540 before anything else.

The PS3 is far too capable of tackling any form of entertainment a household could ask for. Their are no answers for any one company to respond with. Other than down playing what te ps3 does or can do. Which is also merely impossible n makes people ignorant!

Stereoscopic 3D does exist on 360 games (not the cheap 50's kind. see Avatar, Black Ops etc).
The PS3 advantage in stereoscopic 3d is HDMI 1.4
GT5 can run two full 720p images @ 30fps (360 has to use sub-HD res). At this point, it's not possible to do that on a lesser HDMI spec. Hence, the 360 can't do that either.
I'm sure as 3D grows in usage devs will find ways to utilize SPU power to optimize performance further.

@Temjin,

Hmmm...When I typed up my summary earlier, I knew that the 360 ought to have the computational power to do stereoscopic 3D, but I also knew that the fact that not all 360s have HDMI meant that it couldn't push it to a screen. But your comment made me go back and do some more reading - thank you. So, let me correct myself.

Some games that use 3D on the 360 at anything close to HD resolutions use a technique similar to Analglyph 3D - like Crysis 2.

I didn't know that any game developers had gone to the lengths of implementing a true 3D on the 360. I honestly didn't think it would be worth their while with the incomplete HDMI support in the 360.

I did some further reading and find that he 360 can't support the 720p3D standard because it uses a 1280x1440 frame buffer to handle two full 720p frames in an over/under configuration. The 360's frame buffer can't be configured to handle that. The second problem 360 faces is that not all 360s have HDMI, and the HDMI it has is not HDMI 1.4 compliant. Last up is that the 360 was not designed to accommodate 3D. The eDRAM in the GPU on the 360 isn't big enough to handle it, and tiling must be used to handle the full frames.

There are 3D techniques that work, the one that Crysis uses isn't as good as I thought it was. It uses the colored glasses, but uses a geometric trick to achieve a '3D' image extrapolated from a single view point. This allows it to put out a sort of 3D image with very little CPU/GPU impact. The 360 is currently a bit unclear with regard to 3D because Microsoft has chosen not to take the lead and has not provided a 3D API. So devs are choosing their own approaches.

However the 360 can do 3D in a side by side image mode. The PS3 does it in a over/under mode that allows the system to send two full 720p frames to the TV in one frame (1280x1440). The 360 using side by side mode puts two 720p images side by side, but the resolution has to be slightly compromised to fit both images in a single 1080p frame buffer (1920x1080). I'm not certain how the HDMI link allows side by side frame data to be send, nor whether the standard includes scaling images back to proper 720p. However both the over/under and side by side techniques work just fine, and the TV splits the frames apart and displays them appropriately.

I still believe that because of the compromises that the 360 must make it's 3D resolution is likely to be lower than the PS3s, but that will depend on the game and the processing time available. Many PS3 3D games do not run in full 720p3D resolution either, although, some of course do. The PS3 remains the only console to support 3D in HD video playback.

Hey, that external CPU thing you mentioned sounded almost exactly like the concept that was patented a few months back by Sony for connecting what looked suspiciously like a PS2 in a box to the USB ports on a PS3. This patent makes specific mention of SPUs. The odd thing is that the configuration of the notional CPU in this patent is a 4 core unit. If you're adding more CPU to a PS3, you're not going to use a cut down Cell. On the other hand, the PSP2 is rumored to have a cut down mobile version of the Cell which would include 1 PPC core and 3(or 4) SPUs. That would match the proposed accessory that connects tot eh USB ports much more closely....just sayin'.

I'm quite the sure the joystick they are offering is one of very low quality instead of one being of arcade standards. Still though no amount of pre-order bonuses, not even Kratos is going to make me drop a dime on this game.

"he acrade stick looks pretty cool actually, i don't usually go for them but this one is rather tempting"

forget about the look of the joystick being offered, its the quality of the stick you should be thinking about given the fact joysticks for console fighting games tend to be of very low quality e.g. they lack the actual type of high quality parts used in a coin-op machine. To further add as a result of these low quality parts they end up breaking easily.

Then they did a segment on mokele mbembe, so I figured it was just a mob of crazy people seeing crazy things.

Yeah, I'm firmly aware that arcades still exist in Japan. But they might as well exist in Asgard or Olympus as I've no intentions of ever going to Japan, so the existence of those 'cades doesn't really effect my life.

Isn't Kratos only on the ps3 version too? Not that I would ever get it for anything else. Altho with the way they are packing this game with the different versions it sounds like there will be tons of dlc and will cost an arm and a leg by the time you actually get everything.

I'll wait for the goty version or whatever they decide to call the complete package that comes out later.

here's the crappy part: the classic costume that comes in the kollector's and tournament edition is also one of the ninja. they don't say which one, and they're not being very clear about it. as it stands right now, it looks like you're running the chance of getting a pre-order and collector's voucher for the same character. unless the kollector's/tournament voucher is for someone like Smoke, Noob Saibot, or Ermac (who is in the game now) or maybe one of the cyber-ninja like Cyrax or Sektor.

or something else. I dunno.

I'm getting the Kollector's for myself, and two regular copies for the GF and my eldest nephew... I'll have access to all three retailer exclusives...

Oh, oh, the "figurines" need a bit better description in this article! They're actually rather large, nice quality book ends, not figurines at all. Scorpion on one side, Sub-Zero on the other, but they've not revealed what the Sub-Zero side looks like. Scorpion is yanking his "spear" thinger through the wall creating a nice illusion.

It'll make for a really cool "game" end on my book shelf, where my games are. :B

All they show is Scorpion's side, but the sihloutte on the box might give an idea of what Sub's side looks like.

Also, the MK Twitter cleared up the retro-costume issue. The one included in the Kollector's and Tournament editions of the game is a fourth ninja, not the three retailer exclusive ninja.
