Take-Two Enjoys Profitable Non-GTA Fiscal Year

Square-Enix may not have a happy New Year, but Take-Two will.

Now that the publisher has branched out, they're capable of turning a profit during years when they don't release a Grand Theft Auto. ...of course, it helps when you release a blockbuster that can essentially be labeled GTA in the wild west. Take-Two's financinal earnings for the current fiscal year look good; they've reported a 65% rise in revenue to $1.16 billion, with a profit of $49.7 million. This is in stark contrast to the $130 million loss it posted during last year's fiscal year and the company can thank Red Dead Redemption, which has shipped nearly 8 million copies since its launch this past May. Said CEO Ben Feder:

"We have achieved our goal of profitability in a year without a new release of Grand Theft Auto. Our better-than-expected revenue growth and margin expansion were driven by strong demand for our diverse portfolio of games, including the hit new titles Red Dead Redemption and NBA 2K11, as well as strong sales of catalog titles and digitally delivered content. I am also pleased to report that our 2K Sports division was profitable during the period."

It also helped that the stellar NBA 2K11 did exceedingly well (3 million units shipped worldwide), partly due to EA's cancellation of NBA Elite 11. It may be a little bizarre that we're taking fiscal year results at this time of year, but Take-Two will shift the end point of their financial year: it's going from October 30 to the more common March 31. As for the future, we expect to see Top Spin 4 (yay for me!) and MLB 2K11, as well as L.A. Noire and - wait for it - Duke Nukem Forever.

Yeah, this is one publisher that seems headed in the right direction.

There are many reasons why Red Dead Redemption is one of the best games we've seen in years. Not only does it have the prerequisite fun factor, but it has proven that, when done well, taking chances on new genres and new ideas can turn a big profit.

It's a milestone in gaming if you ask me.

Can you share these new ideas and new genres that are present in RDR? Great game, but not the Holy Grail you're making it out to be. How is RDR more of a milestone then, say, having a half Muslim, half Christian main character set in the 1200s in a time when guns pretty much dominate the video game world? Seems like more of a risk and departure from the norm to me. Especially, since there have been games like RDR (not equally executed gameplay wise, but equal in narrative) before it. And there was nothing like Assassin's Creed when it launched. But every man has something that tickles his fancy, so, you're alright.

The one game my dad can't wait for is GTA V. He loved GTA IV to death and it was one of the few games he had played twice through. He'd love to see Niko come back. For him, Niko is one of the the best and most memorable characters he has ever had the joy of playing as. xD

Well that aside, when is GTA V supposed to come out? Is 2011 most likely? :o

Anyone hear about ol dude from Cypress Hill suing Rockstar because he said San Andreas was a depiction of his life, since he had an interview with Rockstar a year beforehand?

Just crazy!!!

2K makes great basketball games and DID make great football games, but their baseball games haven't measured up since (at least) the Dreamcast days.

I think it's because they keep sticking Yankees on the cover; how could it not suck? ;)

I know Rockstar dosen't like to put it that way, but they did have a GTA this year, set in the old west.

And it was the best GTA game to date, hands down!

Red Dead Redemption is a technical masterpiece, it is one game that truly warrants it's price tag, and for me is equal game of the year with Mass Effect 2. But imo big props goes to Rockstar's attempts at DLC. Undead Nightmare & Stories From Liberty City are the benchmark for DLC imo. True value for money.

"free-roaming eww" ...is this guy retarded or something? Free roaming is great. In my opinion GTAVC, GTASA,GTA4 were all masterpieces. The only complaint I could honestly make about a GTA game is the Camera. You have to fight the camera as it moves on its own far to much. Especially when using vehicles of any type. It became unbearable in the ballad of gay tony. Try flying a plane in or shooting from a moving vehicle in GTA4 or TBOGT its damn near impossible. The camera mechanics are horrible. Aside from that the GTA games are off the charts.
