PSXE Poll Update: God Of War III The GotY Favorite

While Gran Turismo 5 and Red Dead Redemption gave leader Heavy Rain a run for its money last week, the second phase of the 2010 Reader's Choice Game of the Year wasn't anywhere near as close.

Granted, it may not have had the same amount of competition - depending on how you look at it - but nevertheless, God of War III ran away with the majority of the votes this past week. It hardly comes as any surprise, as many sources will say Sony Santa Monica's epic, nearly flawless action extravaganza is the front-runner for the year's most prestigious award. Based on the past few weeks, it seems GoWIII and Heavy Rain will duke it out for the final prize, but we wouldn't be surprised to see either Red Dead Redemption or Gran Turismo 5 make a late push. In rounding out the top 10 for the finals, we've got Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Final Fantasy XIII and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Will any of them have a chance against the elite of the elite?

As for us, we haven't decided on the GotY winner. It's very possible that Arnold and I will have a mighty long discussion/argument...it just ain't easy this year. In our eyes, there are three (or perhaps four) that deserve to be in the conversation and because they're all so very different from one another, the decision will not come easily. As usual, our awards will go live on either January 1 or January 2, and we'll have all the award categories from previous years, and maybe a few new ones as well...

Every once in a while an article is attributed to John Sheppard. The common belief here is that these articles are actually written by Ben, logged in uner another account or something, since the voice seems very similar and neither Ben nor Arnold ever talks about John as a real person.

True or untrue, it's a running joke which World (among others) frequently makes. Lawless even makes the same reference as I did below (and did so first, but I didn't read his until after I made my joke).

Heavy Rain gets my vote. I can't seem to put my finger on why this game stands out so much to me, but I do remember feelings coming over me that I hadn't felt in a long time. Although it's mature rated it reminded me of the fun I had with video games as a kid. I guess I felt like I finally got a game that was age appropriate for me.

GT5 is good, but not GOTY material. It has many flaws and stupid issues which really hold the game back.

* Drive of the track... you can't their is a invisible wall.
* You can't save your car settings, very frustrating
* You can't fastforward B-Spec... as entertaining as watching grass grow.
* The loading times really get on your nerves.
* No Leaderboards
* No incentive for on-line racing
* No on-line matchmaking

It really get's to you sometimes.

Your first points were addressed by Pontiac. If you know how to drive all is fine. There are no invisible walls, there is a road however.

The online part is fine, functions well, rarely any lag, and the rules are very easy to set. Leaderboards and stuff like that are minor issues which will be added as free patches.

Invalid complaints.

Who the hell complains about 15-30sec loading?

I imagine you never played ps1 and ps2.

Difficult choice, but I went for GoWIII, it really is a testament of what can be done when exclusives are made for a target platform. GT5 still needs some refinements and tweaks as far as I can tell, but it will get there as expected. GOTY in 2011?

same here, GOWIII was good, but I just feel it failed to surpass the precedent set by the other two in their time. HR was an experience that was transcendental.

I'm voting for HR because it represents a philosophy / direction I want to see rewarded.

Even if the other games were better or more fun, even if I would enjoy them more, HR is an attempt to evolve the medium.

As awesome as some of those games are, some of them that made the final list make me sad.

Heavy rain wins my vote. Most enjoyable, creative, different, amazing experience of the year without a doubt in my mind.

Heavy Rain by a hairline. God of War III was fantastic, but failed to capture that feeling of freshness for me.

Also, you mention yourself and Arnold. What about John? That there is proof that he doesn't exist!

I'm going with RDR. I did love Heavy Rain but RDR just got so much more support from the devs than HR did. I mean they cancel the extra DLC so Move would work with it.

As for GoWIII that everybody seems to pick is something I don't get. I mean I did enjoy the game but that was about it. There wasn't anything new to the series except for a lot prettier graphics. The game frustrated me in many parts that when I beat it I was glad to be done with it and traded it off.

vga awards sucked this time.
Heavy Rain is such a unique experience that none other game will give you ever.You really are the characters.You will feel the tension while playing this game and it has sooo much replay value.The game is difficult i tell u.
Oscar worthy story,Fantastic Experience.

I haven't played the full game, but the demo was IMO one of the best this year. Way better than the GOW or Dante's demos that came out around the same time.

I would pick it up on the cheap if I didn't have such a huge backlog.

this proves whats wrong with the industry.
GOW3 was nothing but a technical marvel, a tech demo.
tech demos do not make good games, let along GOTY games!
GOW3 was exactly like the avatar, amazing, beautiful, the best FX ever in a movie, freaking technically amazing.... but boring as bat sh*t!
i remember reading a interview from david yesterday, speaking about the lessons he has learned and the evolution of the industry and one thing he said is people, reviewers, gamers, everyone is so heffed up on graphics there starting to loose the gameplay, the thing that makes the games!
bad gameplay = bad game no matter how amazing the graphics are, they could be so good they would make GOW3 look like a NES game but that does not change the fact its a bad game.
thats why games these days are no where near as good as the games of yesteryear, games use to be made for fun now there made to show off how good things can look.
give me a fun crap looking game over a boring fantastic looking game any day of the week!

You know what was gameplay of 8-bit yesteryears? Pixel counting, thumb-gnawing trial and error, inert pattern memorization, implemented with the most sluggish and stripped down controls.

In fact, console games were a shadow of what was available in the arcades at the time. Not just in terms of graphics, but in terms of gameplay. Gameplay had to be redone and stripped down to work with fewer controls on the home console version, which often was just a cash-in on an existing franchise, so kids were still going to the arcades spending hundreds of dollars on quarter-eaters.

I hear what you mean about GOW3 being more of a technical feat than a revolution in gameplay, but to deny that we've seen some the very best in gaming this generation is to be flat-out ungrateful and inexperienced.

The GOWIII gameplay was phenomenal. The combo's you could pull off and the ease to play are nothing more then great and you could tell they thought about the controls. Anybody can pick up the controller and get the basics of GOWIII very quickly.

Saying that gameplay of GOWIII was bad, is just a plain lie.

@Bjorn: The game may have been fun but the gameplay was just outdated. GoWIII was basically a pretty button smasher. Don't take me the wrong way cause I did buy the game(new) and I thought it was pretty good but it didn't feel like anything new.

i did not say the gameplay in GOW3 was bad, its that its so repetitive it gets boring.
your constantly doing the same crap, fighting the same enemies, and theres so much back tracking its honestly one of the most repetitive games i have ever played!
GOW1 and 2 had a real sense of acomplishment and of evolution, you constantly felt like you were achieving something and you constantly felt like you were evolving in the story and as a character.
in GOW3 you get none of that, you feel like your roaming around in circles for 10+ hours!
if i had a penny for every time i said wasent i just here? i would be the richest man in the world by now!
also GOW 1 and 2 were really brutal and unforgiving which added a depth to the game, especially the first, it had so many death traps, something GOW3 has none of.
GOW3 was more of a button masher than the others too, its kinda not especially if your playing on titan but you can just spam square and constantly dodge.
theres no tactics, no thought required, just hit square than dodge rinse and repeat.
not to mention the story, which really has never been that strong but it was by far the worst in GOW3.
everything besides the graphics were a disappointment in GOW3!
actually, no even they were.
when GOW3 was announced stig promised us it would be running in full HD 60FPS, not only is it not native 1080P its not 60FPS either!
GOW3 was a tech demo, nothing more!

The REAL game of the year for 2010 is Mass Effect 2. I am happy that EA has put in a lot of work for a solid PS3 port.
I agree God of War III had some great moments, but it wasn't as good as its predecessors. Heavy Rain was truly original. Battlefield Bad Company 2 was clearly the FPS of the year.
Haven't gotten to Red Dead Redemption yet. I will though.

God of Rain? Heavy War? Imagine if these two could be fused. A story of epic proportions with a mature setting. Moral choices. Unique elements. Both titles were missing some things of which the other provided. God of War needed a more engaging story, or just more story. Heavy Rain needed.... Well.. I guess it needed more sales. But some have told me that the pace was somewhat slow. To me it was perfect.

Forgot to mention.. After several minutes of staring at the poll. I went with Heavy Rain. I Loved GOW3 but Rain was mature, intelligent and engrossing. This evolution should definitely be rewarded. It is a step into the direction of what my ideal game would be.

Like most the other people here, I've had hard time choosing between GoWIII and Heavy Rain... But Heavy Rain... Heavy Rain touched the bottom of my heart. I yet have to play more games that make me so emotionally connected to the main characters.

Hopefully I don't get the "O" button above my head after Kratos reads this. :P

Tough one between God Of War 3 and Heavy Rain. BC2 is a good game too but on a slightly lesser par than these.
GT5 while I like it. I preferred Heavy Rain and God Of War 3, so looks like I am making a choice between HR and GOW.

I forgot Red Dead Redemption, again this was good but GOW and HR have it slightly beat again just but this is only my opinion.

Went with God of War III. I like Red Dead Redemption, haven't played the rest but Heavy Rain, and I really disliked that game on so many levels.
