Hefty Gran Turismo 5 Update Arrives
When Kazunori Yamauchi said Polyphony Digital would continue to support Gran Turismo 5, he really wasn't kidding.
Update version 1.05 for the masterful racer has arrived and it clocks in at a super-hefty 608MB. Why? Because, as GTPlanet reports, the upgrade offers a ton of improvements and alterations. GT Mode now has Seasonal Events, where you can "participate in official online events from the Polyphony Digital team," there's the Online Collector's Dealership, Online Race Rewards and Experience, Improved Rewards (rewards for A-Spec and B-Spec races have been increased for a limited time), and the ability to set the Race Information Display. In terms of a stability upgrade, the team has "made improvements to the [Log] within [GT Mode]-[Community] section, in order to make its operation more stable." GT5 is a driving simulator and deserving of constant tweaks, as one would constantly tweak a race car. It takes a few laps before you really get it running well, but the core mechanic is what matters...and when it comes to realistic physics, there's nothing better.
So next time you log in, prepare to wait a bit as the update downloads. If you're a hardcore racer, it's worth the wait.

This game must've been rushed..ironic considering the delays but rewards for online race's should be in there already.
Also, "GT Mode now has Seasonal Events, where you can "participate in official online events from the Polyphony Digital team" is this just like GT5P?

Sorry when you write on the PS3's on-screen keyboard, you think about stuff while your writing, & because its so slow you forget what you were thinking about XD
I meant sony 'rushed' the game out, & PD probably only accepted because of the prospect of patches. Because they'res stuff that should've being in the game all along...like leaderboards.
I've saw the cock-pits & honesty I couldn't stop saying "Oh my god.. Oh my god..HOW!? HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?"...when Kaz said these cars were built to last he was being for real.

Sony and PD have a huge brand to protect. If people become discontented with it, it can ruin a great future for PD. You just need one "bad" game, and your future could be in jeopardy. Sony and PD have no choice but satisfy the masses...
I continue to watch the refinements. There will be more patches and my timing of picking it up GT5 mid next year I think is perfect, not to mention the price of the original disk would come down a tad as well. I am in no rush at all, plenty of other stuff to get on with.
Until this latest patch, I always felt GT5 was still in Beta... but I have to admit, with every patch it is getting better and better :)
Hoping to enjoy playing the beast in the next couple of months.

The later GT Time Trial demo was to show the "new" physics engine. From what I have read, seen (plenty of video footage on YouTube in HD + the "now playing" series on Gamespot) and heard, I can see the differences between GT HD, Prologue, GT Time Trial and the full release.
Obviously the game is bigger with more cars, but the "flaws" previously present are still, to some extent, part of the main release of the game.
In GT5, the "flaws" people speak seem to be a mix of visual glitches and gameplay/navigation/online issues - some worst than others, but non so terrible that the game cannot be enjoyed... as we know it can, and many people are in fact loving it.
As for the visual glitches we know of the low polygon car models (for the non premium models) and some bad 3D model stitching. My friend at work has it and he complains about it on a daily basis. Other "flaws" extend to the online lobby and the grind it takes to get anywhere.
So what we are seeing is PD trying to fix this mix of "flaws", both technically and also from a gameplay/navigation/online perspective.
This latest patch it seems will go some way to address some of the issues. We will see what more they do to add the final coat of polish to the title.
As stated, by mid next year, we won't be having this conversation as the game will be ready for its real release.

I never have understood how or why people claim to be experts or knowledgeable about any given subject when it's painfully obvious that they have only gone by 2nd and third hand experiences.
Oh, so you (Qubex) have played GTHD, GT5P, and GTTT? Good. That means nothing when speaking of GT5 since so much has changed.
GT5 is not perfect. However, when it comes to driving, it nearly is, and last time I checked, Gran Turismo was all about the driving.

OK look, let's boil this down to the nub of the issue. Is GT5 perfect? No, are there things that could be better? yes, could that be said of every game, even Uncharted 2? Yes. Are there any visual issues that break or ruin the game? No. Are there any game breaking issues at all? No. Are there minor user interface tweaks that could make things better? Yes. Are there improvements to online that would be welcome? Yes.
Seriously, GT5 gets a lot of criticism for things that on any other game would not be a source of criticism. This thread is a great illustration of much of that.
So, let's look at the issues raised. Shadows, there are some jagged looking shadows, but it's a small visual element in an otherwise extremely good game. Smoke/spray clouds do not blend well when the car is in-front of the cloud, otherwise, the effects are pretty well done. OK, the blending is a visual issue, but it's no worse than the shadowing, and to be honest, it's just a minor visual flaw.
I'm aware of no navigation issues, the main menu feels a little thrown together, but the recent addition of the online dealership and seasonal events were seamless. Navigating the menus is not difficult, and everything is organized just as it has been in the past. can it be cleaned up? Probably, but it's not terrible, and not a distraction.
Online. Yes, at launch the online was a problem because they completely under-estimated the demand for online play. It has got better, and continues to get better. leaderboards and such are re-appearing as they are added for the Seasonal events such as the GT Academy. They look and function just as those in Prologue did.
Some of the standard cars were clearly sourced from lower resolution sources, and it shows, other than that, most cars in the standard line up look fine, I don't honestly see how this can be a real issue for anyone, the biggest issue is not being able to take these cars into the full photo mode, granted they would look less good, but even so, it would be nice.
3D model stitching issues? First I've heard of it.
As for the grind, if you played GT3 or GT4, then this should be familiar, and to be honest, it's no where near as bad as it was in those games. In fact there are several events that are relatively short and easy wins that generate a decent amount of credits each time making grinding relatively pain free. But come on, any game where you save credits to buy in game items has some level of grinding. I'm level 20 and the only real grinding I've done was to obtain and tune the heck out of an E-type Jaguar which I then gifted to my wife in-game. I think that this is an example of mountains being made of mole-hills.
Actually, I think that all of this is mountains being made of mole-hills. By all means recognize flaws, but put them into perspective and context for heaven's sake. The biggest 'flaw' in the game is actually the fully custom transmission not being fully custom, even though the game manual and help say it is. Other than that, everything else is non-consequential.
Qubex, I've played GT2, GT3, GT4, GTHD, GGT5Prologue, GT Time Trial, and now GT5. I can honestly say that I find your comments to be overblown with respect to GT5. Truly and honestly, GT5 is the best driving of all of them, and although the menus in Prologue were slick by comparison, everything else is the same or better. Until you play the game, your criticisms will ring hollow.

Admittedly, I never said the game is "bad", I know its good, and I know it has the best simulation engine on any platform - I owned GT2 on PSX.
It still doesn't mean PD should be so easily forgiven for a release I honestly think was rushed through. If Sony did not put pressure on them I feel you would have gotten this game Holidays 2011 and not 2010. It needed a few more months of polish that is all.
I think the whole community is just glad they are going about fixing whatever needs fixing... enough noise was made about it... if they didn't or showed arrogance they would have begun destroying this great I.P. Gamers would have just started to lose confidence in future GT iterations.

I don't know whether that is even close to what happened with GT5, but I do know that the core of the game is extremely good and solid, and the user interface is what lets some things down.
I was one of those calling on PD to just get on and release the game, I was impatient to play. So I can hardly turn around now and blast them for releasing it too early (I don't think that they did). Like you though, I am glad that they are still working on the game and adding/refining things. GT5 is such a big game, there are so many features and aspects to the game. As such, that means there are many ways in which the game may be improved, despite it already being the best GT I've played.
Honestly, I think that when you play it, you will be extremely pleased. Many of your worries will melt away as the game warms your heart in so many other ways that you won't worry about some things in the same way as you may be now.

* “[Seasonal Events] have been added to the upper left side of the [GT Mode] – [GT Life] screen. From here you can participate in official online events from the Polyphony Digital team.
In these events, all participants race under the same regulations, and if you complete the event you will win rewards and experience. In Time Trials and Drift Trials, compete on the leader boards with players around the world.
* An [Online Dealership] has been added to the left center of the [GT Mode]-[GT Life] screen. In here you will find popular and rare used cars. You might just come across that one car you’ve always been looking for, that you haven’t been able to find in the [Used Car Dealer]
* Online Race Rewards and Experience
When you complete a race in the [Open Lobby] or [My Lounge], you will now gain rewards and experience points.
Therefore if you are focused more on playing online, you’ll still be able to gain rewards and levels that you need to progress in [GT Life].
* Driving Distance and Number of Wins in Online Races
The driving distance and the number of wins you achieve when you complete a race in [Open Lobby] or [My Lounge] will now affect your stats in [Profile] and the [Garage].
Here again the results from your online play will c*mulate within [GT Life].
* Improved Rewards
The rewards for winning races in both A-Spec and B-Spec in [GT Mode]-[GT Life] have been increased for a limited time only. (This applies until the end of January 2011)
This is a great chance for those who were previously having difficulties getting ahead in the game, due to a lack of funds for tuning and purchasing required cars.
* Race Information Display
[Race Information Display] is now available in [Start]-[Quick Options]. (You can also see this in [Race Display] in [Options]).
* Save Data Backup
You can now copy and restore your save data. For details, please refer to the in-game [Manual].
* Personal BGM (Menu)
From [Options]-[Hardware]-[Audio], it is now possible to set the [Personal BGM] (Menu)]. (This can also be accessed from the [Music Library] within [GT Mode]).
* Car Name Change
The official name of “Red Bull X1″ has been changed to “Red Bull X2010″.
* Integration with the Website
The main features within [GT Mode]-[Community] can now also be accessed through the “gran-turismo.com” official website.
* [Important Note:]
* We have made improvements to the [Log] within [GT Mode]- [Community] section, in order to make its operation more stable. Please note that the information that was here before the update has been reset.”

The suspension is more of an art, and it can be difficult to determine the best settings because sometimes your best sits on a knife edge between horrid and uncontrollable.
The thing that I have the worst time with is the limited slip differential. More than once I have had a car with a powerful engine, but have not been able to find a setting on the LSD that allows the power to be tamed.

Clearly the game's finished, the extra features are extra things that make the game better.
Right out of the box without patches the game is the best racer (sim) there is, there's no argument against that.
With that cemented, adding extra content is only a good thing.

Only in the West do you hear people whine about extra content.

Scarecrow is clearly confused, and his cheap shot at the West is unwarranted. GT5 is not getting "extra content". "Extra content" would be cars, tracks and challenges. What GT5 is getting, as the article clearly points out, is "improvements and alterations". In other words, Polyphony released the game one way, and now a few weeks later, they're changing things around because it was lacking in many obvious areas.

The patch came with the "Seasonal Events" which has several new A-Spec races located in there which in turn will change on a monthly basis.
Scarecrow is right in a sense though, the US (yes, I am a proud American) does whine over a heck of a lot of issues. Problem is, jaggies (for example) are excused in games like COD, but nitpicked until the end in GT5.
The American media is hypocritical, and it's not that hard to see.

With regard to GT5 and the recent patch, It's definitely improvements and enhancements, and a few additional elements such as the seasonal events and online dealership. The thing is that a game as big as this can't ever be perfect, it will always be possible to improve it in some fashion. *Some* of the things included are, as you say, common sense fixes, others are enhancements and improvements targeted at things that players have clearly been sensitive to. It's one of those things where I'm not sure it's fair to criticize a developer for supporting a game with improvements and enhancements. On one hand you could say that the patch includes things that should have been there from day 1, so the dev didn't do a good job. On the other hand, you could say that the developer released the game and is refining it based on user feedback, and it's great that the developer is so responsive to player views.

a month ago they were swearing blue demanding the game be released, and now there swearing blue because the games not perfect.
in hindsight they should of delayed this till next year, theres heaps of things that should of been in there, and other things that need to be polished up.
the wait is whats hurt GT5 the most, if it came out after 3 years of development everyone would of shat themselves because of the amount of work done in such a small time line.
but 6 years?
i dunno, i just cant see 6 years of work in GT5.

The fact remains that it's the most complete racing game on the market. Easily outstrips the competition in content, and overall quality is second to none.

it most certainly is, theres no other game that offers so many different comps to participate in but thats half the problem.
they spend all there time adding in karts, nascar, rally that they ran out of time to polish the dam thing!
better to have 1 glasses of purified water than 1000 glasses of muddied water.
PD should of just given us A spec and licenses and thats it, than maybe add extra stuff as DLC or for GT6.
but no they had to cram it all into GT5 and because of that the quality has suffered.
quality over quantity!
the standard cars for instance, they look like cardboard cut outs from GT4 for crying out loud!
that is unacceptable, 6 years in development and 800 of the 1000 cars look like a freaking ps2 game!
as i said before if this came out after 3 or 4 years of development people would be shocked and really impressed.
but 6, sorry but i dont see 6 years worth of work here.

When the load times to leave back the race selection menu's so to just to get back into the same race are so long it makes you wonder why not one person at PD thought of just putting a restart option it from the start, why force gamers an unnecessary wait of a couple of minutes!
Yes it is patched now but why did it need to be in a patch, remember their are people who will buy this game without any internet connection so they are stuck with the game on the disc.
Though I love this game, and would probably re-buy it, even with it's faults, that does not mean I am going to put on GT tinted glasses and let it and all it's faults have an easy ride, as so many others have.
