DC Universe Online Dated, Priced

It's your chance to design a superhero and save the world. But are you willing to pay to do it?

Well, perhaps if the game is good enough... DC Universe Online has been in beta mode for a little while - it's open to PlayStation Plus members - and now, we have a release date: it's January 11, 2011 for North America and January 14, 2011 for the UK. You will create your own superhero or villain and choose a mentor; one of the many recognizable names in the DC world will coach you from the start. That could be anyone from Superman to the Joker. The game will boast the standard price tag ($49.99 for PC, $59.99 for PS3) and it does come with a free 30-day subscription but of course, you'll probably want to play longer.

If so, you have the option of paying $15/month or $199 for a lifetime subscription (13 months worth). Now, PC players may be used to this but console gamers aren't; when IGN mentioned this to the game's Director, Chris Cao, this was the response:

"A little over a decade ago, people questioned subscription fees on a PC. They'd never played an MMO before and they weren't sure why they'd pay monthly to play it. Then they stepped into those first worlds, lived online, and came to realize that the experience was worth the expense. The same thing is going to happen on the PS3. People are always willing to pay for good games, especially when they continue to grow and change. We've made a great game in DCUO and we're going to keep adding to it with each and every update."

Well, that's the typical argument for the cost of playing an MMO: it's like nothing else. And that much is true but the question is, are you going to be one of those willing to shell out to experience the broad MMORPG experience?

hmm think i will play the beta and then skip this one. no way i will pay for this game. all that money could be spent on waaay better AAA titles comin out. any single one of them will be money better spent than on this. by the end you could have several games in place of this one. no thanks. after that huge 15 gb dl taking 6 hours on my ps3 i lost interest after an hour of it. i will try it again i guess but no way will they get that kind of money from me.

if it were marvel i may be more interested, but dc is ehh.

Ok I have to admit I played a bit of City of Heroes back in the day but my wife was waaay more into that. I watched her play countless hours, so much that I feel like I did all that playing as well. It was cool back then, kinda isolated since Im use to being on the console and talking to people instead of just typing to talk. (Even though it did come out in 2004 and chat wasnt THAT big yet.)

I play this game with my wife on a regular right now and it does improve on everything I experienced in COH but GEEZ I dont think we're gonna be able to do the $15 a month. Just....dont think I would play it THAT much to warrant $15 a month when I have MANY other games I can play for free online. Sorry DC.

Game is badass though, so if you a plus member, go grab it while ya can!

I tried CoH back in the days wnd while the character creation were totally awsome the game never did it for me.

I'm still stuck on CoH...for some reason, I keep creating toons that I've already created and playing with them. It's like my drug. And if DCUO is any good, I'll probably stop giving NCSoft my money and go to this.

Expensive, not worth it. If I pay near full retail for the game, I sure don't expect to pay the equivalent of a full PSN release every month for the privilege of continuing to play.

If you buy the lifetime subscription this costs you $259.99. $260 for a game!? Holy crap, and people accused Sony of over pricing. I know that there is an ongoing server commitment, but still, if games like Gran Turismo and Burnout paradise can sell for $60 and include free online, this seems a bit steep, even if they have to provision more servers.

I agree highlander... I dont think the superhero world holds as much ground as say a game like wow to spend $200 on a lifetime subscription either...

If the game was more like 5-10 dollars a month it might be worth it. Lol free is even better. Seriously though ive said from the start i dont think i can justify paying to play a game after i have bought it.

Okay, I don't understand the comment about a lifetime subscription if it only lasts 13 months. I hope I'm reading that wrongly. Second, Highlander, you mention people calling Sony price gougers? You do realise that this is being published by SCEOnline? So, this is Sony's doing.

If you buy the lifetime subscription, you have to keep your fingers crossed that the game has a longer lifetime than APB.

I doubt I would ever do it, but I can see the justification for paying a subscription fee for a Fantasy MMO. I don't see what extra content could justify it for a DC superhero game.

Holy cow $200 for life time? that's outragous!! I highly doubt people are goin gto pay $200 for a game!! usually console games don't do monthly fees. This game doesn't look worth leaving your ps3 on all day for!!!

I've been loving the beta since it launched for Plus subscribers and since last nights update, it runs and looks better than ever before. I'd give them my money now if I could, they've done such a great job listening to the fans and getting things done. That's why I pay.

I didn't realise that it would be out so soon. It's decent enough timing, but if I want a game to sink MILLIONS of hours into, I'll get LBP2 a week later, and play for free. Word is that the beta is quite good, which should be somewhat indicative of the final product, but worth an extra $15/month... We'll see.

I know I am going against the grain here, but I think the lifetime fee is brilliant. Think about it. Most special/collectors edition games nowadays run you atleast 99-150. And that's just one game, that doesn't need any server upkeeping and regulation. So 200 for a final fee and not have to worry about future costs is psychologically relieving. And through the perspective and passion of an online gamer, this idea is really nice. Most hard core/casual gamers wouldn't really appreciate this idea because there's a million other games they would rather spend their income on. So really, its down to preference, anticipation, and funding. Would you rather knock out the fee sooner than later. Or let it co-concurr with other finances you may have monthly. Great article Ben, keep it up. Also Psx Fam, do any of you have the Move? How fun is it, and are you getting the KZ3 gun for it?

Think of the Move like a penis for your PS3. Not everyone has one or wants one, but they are fun to play with.

You can play with it by yourself and have fun, but it's more fun to whip it out and show it off to your friends, that way everyone can play with it....umm...yeah, that's all I'm going to say about that....

I tried out the beta and it wasn't enough to convince me to pay to play online. It may be enough for other users/gamers though and that's always a great thing for PS3. I'd like to see DC Universe Online supported and complimented. I've never been into these types of games...having it be about comic book heroes was the only selling point that drew me in. Hopefully the more advent MMORPG gamers love it and they find this game to be awesome.

The beta is good and will make the game better once they work or any kinks but subscription based games were never appealing to me. What they should do is implement a trail period. That being the hook. Those who determine that they cannot live without the game will subscribe.

Personally I would think that rather than gouging $60 for a 1 month trial of a game, they'd be better offering the retail game with a 1 month subscription for the cost of a month of playing time. They're charging so much for the subscription, that the $60 sticker on the retail disc is adding insult to injury. If you're going to charge through the nose for the subscription, at least have the decency to cut players a little slack on the retail price of the game.

I only buy a game every 4 months or so. This one game would completely eat up my entire gaming budget. Nope, can't justify that.

Sorry, but I just can't stomach the idea of paying full price for a game, and then having to pay more every month just so I can play it. I don't do it on PC either. If you want a monthly subscription fee then the initial game should be free, or at least much cheaper than full retail price of a normal (pay once and play as much as I damn well want) game

Tried the beta but it needs a little more work before I commit to it. Played City of Heroes/Villains for a few years, and this has the potential to be just as, if not more, fun then those were. I'm not a really big DC Comics fan, but if it's worth it later on, I'll try it. In the meantime, if I really need to play a superhero MMO, I'll play Champions Online since it's going free to play in a few months.

hmm I think most people fail to realise that wow goes for $15p/m and that if u played it for 2yrs is almost double the price of the $200 lifetime sub. Honestly I love RPG's and while I hate paying to play, I do wish more developers would opt-in for a one time sub. like this because I would rather pay that then pay monthly knowing down the road I will end up paying more. It's all about offering versatility and it's about time RPG's do this cause free to play and pay to play just ain't cutting it.

That said everyone is different some will not want to pay. I know but this game is really good and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with the get, but not fully on board yet the game def has it's issues thats for sure as me for I'm on the wait and see list.

Will many people buy this ? Possibly those that love PC gaming and want it on thier console. A lot of people from here sound like they wont be buying it. I don't think I am going to buy it. I had hopes for this but now after realising it's for only 13 months. I have got better things to spend my money on.

World Of Warcraft has been established for ages and if I wanted to I would sure pay to play that on a decent high end spec PC.

May consider if it comes down in price.

Frankly, no, I won't pay the price. Not to play this, and it's hard to imagine even my very favorite games being worth $15 every month forever. Show me an MMO without a monthly fee and I'll listen. But there are just far too many games to play to possibly justify investing so much money and, as a result, time into any one game. Not interested.

Would I pay for a *good* mmorpg? Hell yeah I've been doing so for years already, back during my PC days. And I've missed the mmo feeling ever since I converted to PS3-gaming.
Cause you don't *need* another game when you got a good mmorpg. It's got everything: Socializing, cooperative play, pvp, action, exploration, adventure, quick play, hour long tweakings, the lot.

However, it doesn't look like this will be the mmo that will take my "ps-mmo-virginity". Still I wish it everything good, hoping that other concepts will follow.

Excellent comment. I've loved the beta so far (despite the freezing) and since last night's patch update I've fallen in love all over again. There are two things one needs to be in order to truly appreciate this game: An RPG/MMO fan, and a DC Comics fan. It's a pretty intense feeling hanging out and receiving missions from actual DC characters you've always loved.

I'm also really digging the action. I played Final Fantasy XI for years, and a little bit of WoW here and there and this is just different enough for me.

This is definately on my radar too. I simply *loved* the first kotors (yes both of them!), only thing missing was the mmo element. If they manage to keep the flavor of the single player games and transform it into a mmo, it will be one of the mmorpgs of the century!

I liked the beta playing solo. Once I got outside with everyone the game kept freezing everytime I would get in with a crowd of people...And yes I have a very good connection, the servers just sucked. Oh and sometimes I would be in a Que with 100 people before I could even get into the game.

Uh just so everyone knows... If your not a plus subscriber and want in on thia beta gamespot is giving away beta codes. Mines already downloading and its huge like 14,000 mb huge. O well. Anyways im not a fan of the site, but all u have to do is register with their site (i used my alternate email, hah). Its quick n simple, then just follow their link on the home page to recieve a ps3 key. Btw not sure how many they r giving out or how long it lasts...

knew that months ago!
cant believe this is FINALLY coming out, i mean was this not one of the first games announced for the ps3?
speaking of this what ever happened to the agency?
i remember it being revealed years ago, there was suppose to be dedicated servers where PC and ps3 gamers could play together but we have not heard boo since!
sony loves announcing games than saying nothing about them for 5 years dont they?

I wanted to want this game. Not because I like MMORPGS (I don't), and not because I'm a huge comic nerd (I am), but because of the artists that worked on this game. Jim Lee did all the design work for every DC character that appears in the game, and his then studio (WildStorm, which was just closed for business recently) with Carlos D'Anda and others doing the scenery and whatnot to give the entire game a uniform feel and vibe.

This wouldn't be the first time I bought a video game to support a comic artist whose work I enjoy. Carlos D'Anda did all the character design work for Batman: Arkham Asylum, and his illustrations of such were used in the character profiles. AA just turned out to be a really awesome Batman game.

But those prices... no thanks. I even told Jim Lee such via Twitter not too long ago. Maybe if the disc was only 29.99, double maybe if it matched the PC price, as there's no reason the console version should be ten dollars more. But monthly fees and me agree with me about as much as my stomach and really bad Mexican food after six or seven shots of vodka.

Once nobody buys it for PS3 due to the price, I bet they lower the monthly rate.

Depends on how it does on the other platforms. Judging from other mmorpg releases it actually is a bigger chance they pull the plug of the entire project than that they lower the price.
Running mmorpg servers is *expensive*, not to mention the cost of development after the game is released. I hope you guys realize that in a mmorpg new content is added continuously during the games entire lifespan, it's not something released and forgotten after a couple of bug patches...

@Beamboom: There is plenty of other games that don't charge a monthly fee and survive off of microtransactions and expansions. Guild Wars, D&DO, LotR, and many others.

I think if they went the same route they would have a lot more people buying it.

There are. We also got that Icelandic space mmo that I can't recall the name of right now... And Second Life I guess could count too.
I've not played all of them, not by far, but I've played the mentioned icelandic game and guild wars, and while I must admit they do have their charm I don't think they offer even remotely the same variety and even depth as the "traditionally charged" mmorpg's do.
Based on those two games I think it was very apparent who was charging a monthly fee and who was not, and personally I found the monthly fees to be more than worth it.

Really did not like this game, but alot of people seem to like it. Guess these same people have no clue what a real MMORPG even is.
Save your money for quality folks.

Theses developers have lost it.This game is not going to sell well. I was set on buying it but for extra fees forget it,theres just no way.There going to have to lower all kind of prices soon after it gets in stores...Mark My Words saler bins really fast. Bunch Of Idiots.
