Uncharted Movie Director Denies Currently Known "Facts"

And here I was thinking it was tough to discern fact from fiction in the world of video game reporting. Apparently, in the film realm, nothing is true until it actually happens.

Either that, or everyone just wants to keep things under wraps for now. Tough to say. But as many of you know, it was reported by the L.A. Times that the upcoming movie based on Uncharted: Drake's Fortune would boast a "family dynamic" and Mark Wahlberg as the lead actor. Both were hit or miss amongst fans of the game but now it appears that in fact, none of this has been confirmed. In speaking to Joystiq, Naughty Dog director Justin Richmond says the film's director, David O. Russell, denied the Times' report:

"First of all, all that stuff was denied by David O. Russell. He actually called us up and was like, 'I don't know what these guys are talking about.'"

He also went on to say that Wahlberg wasn't confirmed to play Nathan Drake and it's all just "Hollywood gossip." So does this mean the overwhelming favorite of the Uncharted followers, Nathan Fillion, is still a possibility...? Well, given Russell's apparent search for serious star power for this project, probably not. As for the plot point involving Drake's family, that wasn't really popular, either.

Okay, so maybe scratch all that. Or maybe not. Maybe Russell just doesn't want to talk about it yet. Who knows?

Serious star power or not, I still want to see Nathan Fillion in the role as Drake.

I mean, how else does one get to be a star-power unless they're ever given the chance to be all they can be?

And especially in the role that's exactly that "perfect fit" for him!!!!

I agree with HighOnFire on Jeff Bridges playing the part of Sully!

I'm watching the Netflix movie "Men who stare at goats" right now and in it, Jeff Bridges(minus the pony tail) could be the splitting image of Sully.

campbell goes well as a sidekick in burn notice and jeff bridges did great as the screw over friend in iron man

Its a shame but you may have provided the best option. I recently stated that I would Love to see a God of War movie. I immediately got a reply of NO from a commentor.

Great movies can be made out of our game franchises! There is no doubt in my mind that it CAN be done. Question is... Once all is said and done and we fade to black...Will Hollywood create a Great movie?

Yeah they can be done right, but unfortunately Hollywood isn't going to make those movies the way their suppose to be. I mean we all know @ this point that the are never gonna really follow storyline of the video-game down to the T they're always gonna try to throw in they're own plot twists & turns & that's were the movies usually turnout not to be so good.

Maybe the early info was released to gauge public views of the project. Maybe they actually care and pulled a Sucker Punch and are making changes accordingly.

Who am I kidding, this is Hollywood! They will produce the movie they think will make the most money! Audience be damned!

Seriously, maybe its a good thing that nothing is concrete. Marky wasn't on my radar for this whatsoever but he may have been able to pull it off. It was definitely a gamble. Now its anyones guess who will fill the Uncharted shoes.

Everything about this film must be meticulously done, it isn't just to cater to us fans either. It has to be good, and both those ideas were bad. I hope the director feels a ton of pressure by ND to get things right. This is a no fail situation.

Movies past and present have proven that it doesn't need star power to be successful. Just saw Dr. Horrible recently for the first time and Fillion looked so much like Drake (if a tad chubbier.) Producers should see it and his other films just so they can see that is he Drake and not Wahlberg or Cruise or, heaven forbid, Matthew Mconaughey like it was rumored at one point. If they want to add more star power, why not add some major stars surrounding him? It's been done before. I think Harrison Ford should play Sully for example. He's the right age and always came off as a retired version of Indiana Jones or Han Solo.

On the money. Uncharted is best experienced as a game because that's they way it was introduced. You can't take a familiar character and then remake him for a new movie. The unfamiliar won't notice, but we will. I used to watch Transformers in the 80's and I can accuartely say...the Michael Bay movies are disrespectful. Hope Michael Bay doesn't try to make an Uncharted movie. It will have a great musical score, but terrible plot and characters. Oh how I hate these kiddy Transformer movies with unfamiliar, but familiar Robots.

If Nathan Fillion is the best fit to play Nathan Drake then a petition needs to be started. At first I was like "Cool, Mark Wahlberg" but then I was like "hell no, not Mark Wahlberg". The Uncharted video game series already gives us a stellar cinematic experience. We need a film that's going to be at par if not better than what the video game franchise has already delivered. From the start though, I was totally against the family themed story.

Lets hope they do a good job when the time comes.

Well, that's a relief. Maybe they aren't intent on murdering what has quickly become one of my favourite franchises. Although, I'd still prefer to see it as a spin-off to the games, rather than adaption. That way if people become interested in playing it based off what they've seen they don't have to get the same story twice.

Also, most straight adaptions are just plain bad. Case in point: Every Harry Potter movie up to the sixth. Give us something new.

Honestly if Wahlburg gets the role as nathan drake i'll defently won't watch it who the heck wants marky mark and the funky bunch singer in a great game movie make? I surely don't. If Leslie Neilsen was still alive he would of played a great Sully. RIP Leslie!
