Xenogears, Vagrant Story Slated To Become PS1 Classics
The PlayStation Store is now home to tons of fantastic PS1 classics, and role-playing fans have been quite satisfied with current offerings.
But they're about to become even happier, as a new list of games rated by the ESRB continue to prove that the PS1 was indeed an RPG juggernaut. Whenever the ESRB re-rates old games and lists the PS3 and PSP as intended platforms, we usually know the score before the official announcement arrives. According to Examiner.com, several notable titles are on the way to digital reincarnation:
- Arc the Lad III
- Legend of Mana
- R4: Ridge Racer Type 4
- Threads of Fate
- Vagrant Story
- Xenogears
Obviously, the most notable are those last two, arguably two of the greatest RPGs to grace any platform ever. It's a tad depressing as it only further illustrates just how awesome Squaresoft really was, and just how far Square-Enix has fallen, but we'll try not to think about that. Instead, we prefer to think of it this way: some of the greatest games ever will soon be available to a new, wider audience.
And for the record, while I was the RPG king in those days, I regret to say I never played Xenogears. Not being a fan of the mech/sci-fi setting and preferring my Final Fantasy, Suikoden, and Wild ARMs games, I stupidly passed on it. Maybe if there's a lull next year I can give it a try...

I got Vagrant Story on the Aussie PSN about 9 months ago. Great game. Graphics are pretty old school, and the first closed dungeon basement area got old pretty quick, but the game really would've been great for its time. Great story too.
I really am quite surprised it hasn't hit the US PSN yet, I really am!!! You guys are in for a treat.
Also, is Xenogears worth getting? what kind of game is it?

I also never got a crack at R4. I like the RR series a lot and I remember R4 being praised as one of the best arcade racers on PSX, way back when. I think it even runs at 60fps.. a rare feat for most games back then (outside of fighters).

As for Vagrant Story, I've been sitting idly waiting for it to come to the PSN and wouldn't you know it, here it comes. Thats awesome. This is one I've never got the chance to play so I'm ready.
But really, where are we going to find time to play all these games. Classic PS1 games and kickass PS3 games on the horizon. God forbid PS2 and Dreamcast games hit PSN soon.

The only reason I haven't is excessive back log.
edit: Was the sale for PS Plus only? That would explain why I overlooked it.

Speaking of Sqaure Enix's decline, when do you supposed was the turning point? Seemed like they started off well enough. Dragon Quest VIII is one of my favorite JRPG's to date. I expected great things from them then they just seemed to fade away. Was it when Wada became CEO?

My quest is to buy all the ps1 games I can get my hands on (and that I actually like of course).
This is really nice, will finally own Xenogears. Have Vagrant Story.

Unfortunately, it was released the same year FFVII was, and it lived in it's shadow as a new IP. How many of you can find the Tifa poster in Xenogears!?! ;)
And Ben.... the MOMENT you get a lull, you need to start playing this title. In fact, just throw it on your PSP's memory card and play it every time you need to take a long trip the the john.

Work well with FFT so we'll see, must say I've been waiting for this to come.
Now all I need is Chrono Cross on PSN and should be pretty satisfied.
I mean if there are no Turn based RPGs anymore. the only way is to go back and play the ones from golden years again.
