Could 2011 Become The Greatest Gaming Year Ever?

2010 was another great year but at this rate, 2011 may end up rivaling 1998 and 2001 as one of the most groundbreaking, memorable 365-day spans in the industry's history.

Although everyone is expecting Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception to rule all (and that's very likely), the list of unbelievable titles slated for 2011 is enough to make one drool. The list just keeps growing and in all honesty, it's tough to keep a firm handle on all the potentially fantastic games in the hopper for next year: inFamous 2 should be another addictive action blast, Batman: Arkham City looks downright amazing, Resistance 3 and Killzone 3 might dominate the FPS genre, L.A. Noire is immensely intriguing, Gears of War 3 should be the grittiest bit of bad-assery yet, Dead Space 2 is primed to terrorize us again (and leave a huge smile on our faces in the process), LittleBigPlanet 2 is just another step in creative freedom and innovation, The Last Guardian might be an artistic achievement of epic proportions, Twisted Metal just screams pure, unadulterated entertainment, Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3 are atop the heap for role-playing fans, and of course, you can expect the next Call of Duty to bring in the dedicated crowds.

And that's hardly the complete list. I'm sure I missed plenty. The Devil May Cry reboot comes to mind as something we all might adore (provided Ninja Theory does everything right), and if there's a God in heaven, Final Fantasy Versus XIII will release in 2011 and single-handedly redeem Square-Enix. And what about the long, long wait that is finally over...Duke Nukem Forever? And Diablo III? And Max Payne 3? Rage? Crysis 2? Deus Ex: Human Revolution? The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim? SSX: Deadly Descents? Journey? Metal Gear Solid: Rising? ...where's the end? 'jaw drops'

It is very possible but 2007 & 2001 for me were massive years.

Mass Effect 3 & Uncharted 3 alone however is surely going to make 2011 one of the best years. If Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown gets a console release next year then 2011 will be my personal fave year for gaming.

Wow, didn't think there were any VF fans here. I signed a VF5:FS petition over a year ago, and we still don't have it. Heck, PS3 users still don't have VF5 online. VF and me have never been able to have a long lasting relationship. VF wouldn't ever come to my local arcades. VF had limited console exposure for the first 3 entries. And VF5 appears to have sold like poo poo on PS3/360.

Temjin. I think i've lost count of the amount of visits to VFDC & petitions i've signed in the hope of SEGA releasing VF5FS to consoles, even when Virtua Fighter 5R became obsolete i've been hopeful for a VF5FS. Since it was trademarked for consoles a few months back i do think we will see it eventually unless the Final Showdown subtitle belongs to a different SEGA title altogether.

The trademark thing makes it hopeful. I'd like to see it. Though, I don't know if I can take on another fighter. I have my work cut out for me while holding my own online with T6. I always feel like I don't dedicate enough time to it as it is, and spreading myself out to another probably wouldn't make things any better. Right now I'm averaging only a little over half of my ranked fights online.
I just don't want to see a stalwart fighter, like VF, become obsolete as gaming continues to modernize. Upset jRPG fans seem to be an indicator of what happens when a genre really starts loosing ground.

@Temjin,

I utterly reject your thesis that gaming is 'modernizing' and some games and game genre somehow become obsolete.

This isn't like talkies vs silent movies, or color vs black and white movies. Video games are a form of art - IMHO, and as such, it is what it is. I would agree that there is a great deal of growth and evolution in certain genre of game, although, I would definitely have to say that the mega popular first shooter genre really hasn't developed much in the last 5-6 years. There has been some incremental improvement in the online play, and visual improvement that is a natural consequence of hardware advances. But modernization implies wholesale change from one form to another.

You mentioned JRPGs so let's look at that genre. What constitutes modernization of that genre? Switching from hand drawn sprites to 3D character models? third person 3D roaming through towns/environments vs an isometric view or a top down view? real time battle instead of turn based? Guns instead of swords? Swearing instead of discussion?

Seriously though, what form does modernization take that it can somehow leave a particular genre of game obsolete? Perhaps out of fashion, perhaps niche market, but that doesn't make it obsolete. A Porsche isn't obsolete, it's a niche market luxury car.

I'm seeking to understand what you mean, because on the surface of it saying that certain genre become obsolete while gaming modernizes - and then directly mentioning JRPGs - seems to be to be slightly provocative. I think that certain genre can become obsolete in the same way that silent movies gave way to talkies. Text based adventures just wouldn't sell today, they truly are obsolete, and might get by purely on nostalgia, but nostalgia has a very short life.

So, please clarify what you mean by gaming modernizing and how you think a gaming genre can become obsolete.

hehe, whoa, Highlander. What I meant by that was jRPG fans have been real concerned how their genre has been struggling to stay true to it's form over the years and, also, be consistent in quality in this modernizing(altering the genre format to match consumer trends) market.

Unlike fighting games, gamers who enjoy VF5, Tekken, DOA, and SC have had the same formulaic approach for over a decade now with plenty of them landing this gen. And even 2D fans are rejoicing because 2D fighters are making a big come back (SF4, MK, MvsC and Blazblue) I don't have to worry if the next SC or Tekken 7 will be re-invented-- I'm sure FF fans are holding their breath for what FF15 will become. It'd be sad to see Sega try to re-invigorate the VF series by changing it into a game that plays more like a UFC/MMA game.
Sorry for the ambiguity there on my part with the previous post. Hopefully that clears things up.

I also think budget plays a big factor in this as well. A quality fighting game is much cheaper to produce than a quality jRPG

Wishing the best for FF Versus XIII, I know Killzone 3, Resistance 3, and Uncharted 3 will do very well.

L.A. Noire is going to own as well.

Now speaking of Rockstar, whatever happened to Agent? Are we ever going to hear word about that? Maybe next E3 hopefully? I'm quite interested.

And I'm hoping FF Versus XIII does bring back Square Enix from wherever they are. But if it does...I wish Nomura sama just leaves and starts his own thing like Sakaguchi.

OH!!! and don't forget Yakuza 4 and Valkyria Chronicles 3! SEGA is still in the game.

Jeese I feel bad for SEGA's Sonic, wonder if he'll ever make a comeback.

Well, pretty much every year of gaming has given us at least 1 memorable title. With the exception of Uncharted, 2007 was a very slow gaming year for me. I bought my PS3 in 2006 (at the end, obviously), yet I found myself spending most of my time with PS2 titles and a few PC games.

I'm not disputing some people loving 2007, I just personally don't see an overwhelming appeal for that year since for me, I spent most of my time replaying games from the previous genre.

2010 is pathetic, but maybe it's because Sony is focusing on Move.
2011 will be that awesome.
List of must buys:
1) KZ3
2) LBP2
3) MVC3
4) Crysis 2
5) Tom Clancy's GRFS
6) UC3
7) Disgaea 4
8) Bulletstorm
9) Gears 3
10) ICO Collection
11) RAGE

My list of interested but still not confirmed to buy:
1) Twisted Metal
2) The Last Guardian
3) Dead Space 2
4) inFAMOUS 2
5) Resistance 3
6) Shift 2
7) F3AR
8) SOCOM 4
9) Batman
10) MGS Rising

For DmC I'm both interested and worried for it because it's Ninja Theory style and Unreal Engine. They make great game but DMC-styled I'm not sure, though Heavenly Sword gives me hope but I'm not holding my breath.
The trailer showed "Dante" shooting his guns real slow. And if it gets a 2011, then it probably will get "The Buggiest Game Award".
They had 3 years with Enslaved and look what happened.

I don't know where have I read it somewhere that Square Enix saying Versus XIII won't make it in 2011.

There are zombies in Yakuza: Of the End, not Yakuza 4. Yakuza 4 will still be a pretty traditional Yakuza game...and this time more JAPANESE considering they're having hostess bars! YES YES YES!! ^_^ (I mean in the US version particularly)

As for why there are zombies in Yakuza: Of the End...I guess it was sort of a "Yea let's just put in zombies and check out the turnout of this."

Spinoff game like Yakuza Kenzan. Yakuza 4 its a 2010 game, Yakuza of the End still isn't released on Japan.

Hope we finally get a decent Zombie game, Dead Rising 2 was crap..funny how the first game was hyped in the 360 when was exclusive.

Don't forget Bioshock Infinite, those guys need to school Ninja Theory on how to use Unreal effectively.

I'm gonna have to be careful to keep my day one purchases to as minimum a number as possible for the wallet. Look at all those exclusives!

For me 1998/1999 stand as the best years for gaming. 2011's challenging that, but still, 1998 and 1999 were outrageous.

RE2, SH, GT, Zelda OOT, MGS1, Banjo Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot 3, etc. For 1999 you got FFVIII, GT2, Thousand Arms, Crash Team Racing, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Legend of Dragoon, Xenogears, Vagrant Story, Ape Escape, Medal of Honor, etc.

Only one discrepency, though. Xenogears (at least on my box art and main menu) was released in 1997. Still though... the end of the 90's as a whole were the best years of gaming ever. And it's not even disappointing if it never gets topped. It was just that epic.

It's not true every year, but generally speaking I really do think each year was better than the last. The craft of making games is improving at a remarkable speed, and that was absolutely true this year as well. I mean think about it -- Mass Effect 2 (believe me, PS3-only players, this one was a godsend for sci-fi lovers like me, and you'll find that out for yourself early next year), Red Dead Redemption, God of War 3, Black Ops, Dragon Quest IX... the list goes on and on. Absolutely awesome games across a ton of genres. Red Dead and ME2, in particular, I think portend an absolutely incredible future for games -- top notch stories, great voice acting, believable characters coupled with great gameplay mechanics for a wholly immersive experience. If we keep on seeing these sorts of incredible strides forward in scripting, character development, etc., we could be in for some amazing stuff in the very near future.

Which is to say yes, 2011 is looking mighty fine indeed :)

but not ever, ps3 games, hell ps2 games cant ever compete with ps1 games!
gone are the days where games were made to entertain people, to tell a story.
now there made as a tech demo, nothing more!
that is why 2011 cant be, nor can the future be the best year of gaming ever.
unless, of course that changes and developers start putting gameplay and fun factor before graphics.

Hey there, Mr Negativity. You might be right. The games of next year may not all be as good as they could be, but you must remember that gaming has evolved from the days of the PS1. Back then, it was about fun, but now it is more about engaging the player, and that is usually done through better stories, and more immersive experiences.

Take Deus Ex for example. The focus is obviously not on fun, but offering the player any number of ways to play the game, regardless of their personal preference. Skyrim is about giving us a huge world, and a near endless list of quests, and asking us to do them, and make our own fun along the way. Dead Space is designed to frighten us, and let us come up with inventive ways to make the Necromorphs suffer.

The world has changed, and we must adapt to that. There is no point in living in the past, and dreaming that things could go back to the way they were. That world, that happiness is gone, and I will never know it again.
Peace.

EDIT: Sorry about the off-topic.

but why cant we have both?
why cant we have a game thats immersive and fun?
why cant we have a technological masterpiece like GOW3 and a fun game like just cause 2 all rolled into one?
thats what i want, but thats never going to happen.
as i always say give me a fun but ugly game like just cause 2 over a boring repetitive but beautiful game like GOW3.
why cant we have the cake, and eat it too?
im sick of just staring at it.

It simply isn't about the fun anymore. Not in most cases. Nintendo are really the only ones bucking that trend, as many Wii games focus entirely on the old school fun. A quick thought: perhaps these games do not come across to us as being fun because we have feel as though we've already played them many times. They no longer have the freshness. Another possibility is that only certain genres really lend themselves to it.

It is so rare that we get the opportunity to eat the cake. Perhaps motion control is really the only way to have both?
Peace.

maybe thats why the wii is kicking the royal sh*t out of the ps3 and 360?
games can be played 50 times, and still be fun.
ive finished resistance 1, all R&C games, all PoP games, all uncharted games, infamous, heavy rain, all mario games, all gears games, all donkey kong games, duke games, doom games, DMC games, ect ect more times than i could count but i still have as much fun playing them now that i did when i first did.
i just finished playing heavy rain again with my move controller and had more fun than i did the first time because of my move controller.
ive finished infamous and R&C ACIT over 10 times but thats not stopping me from going back and starting again.
i just started infamous yesterday and am loving it!
reminds me why its one of my favorite new IPs.

of all the games in the list, I will only get The Last Guardian which is on the top of all, followed by Uncharted 3. FFv13 is a maybe and that is it for me, never up to FPSs, or anything using First Person views...

Oh bloody hell. I'm going to need to learn how to freeze time if I want to even think about playing most of the titles I plan to buy next year.

It most certainly could become the greatest year for gaming yet, but I think the possibilities of next year are also worth mentioning. PSP2 announcement/release. 3DS release, the continued pressure of motion gaming to become a more 'core' way of playing. Not to mention what new games may be announced to be released in 2012 and beyond, such as Insomniac's EA project, Sony Santa Monica's next one, the officially official reveal of Sly 4, Guerilla's next project, the next Fallout, Hitman, and everyone's favourite heartbreaker, the fabled FFVII remake.

One thing that disturbs me slightly though, is that almost all of the games mentioned in the article are sequels to existing IPs. A startling lack of new stories and concepts. What's up with that?
Peace.

The amount of games launching in 2011 is insane. I don't think I've ever seen such a crowded year of gaming. Like, ever-ever.
I wan't KZ3 for sure come Feb.
I may have to sit out on MK... I want it, but I don't.
Infamous 2 is a lock. Same with Uncharted 3 and Mass Effect 3.
I'm really hopeful for Deus Ex and Skyrim.
Dragon Age 2 has a stylishness to it now that I find appealing.
I expect NG3 to launch--day one game for me =)
And those are just most of the top tier for me. There's many more I want to see.
Man, I better get saving.. there's no time or money to waste on anything less than the best this year.

I second that. Except Dirt 2 was a car-length ahead of Dirt 1. I expect the same for 3

Oh man... there's no way I'm going to get through a fraction of all those great games. 2011 is going to have to be a very picky year for me as my time + money factor (which is directly proportional to my gaming + fun factor) will be in short supply.

I think I'm just going to have to hold out for The Last Guardian. If I can get only one new game in 2011, that's it. I'm anticipating some lost sleep over Team ICO's latest :D

All these games look fantastic as I am a PS3 gamer first. But the one game I am highly anticipating is The Witcher 2 Assassin of Kings!! I do hope it comes out on the PS3! However it is looking like a PC only release. Should be good though.

Jawk, I am going to only buy 2 or 3 games as day one purchases... I will wait 6 months for the rest and get em cheap...

Patience is a virtue...

Day one buys for me will be KZ3, Uncharted 3 and L.A. Noire.

Mass Effect 2, LPB2 and others (including GT5) I will pick up as used titles if they are about. I still need to pick up Heavy Rain and GoWIII.

So I have a backlog of stuff, but I will pick them up in time... no rush on my side...

Since I'm a collector(& don't do MP mode), here's how I usually wind up buying my games.

I buy the few that are on my "Must have" list soon after they come out.

For the ones on my "want" list, I'll wait a while for their price drops.

For the one's that are only on my "need" list(collection purposes only), I just wait till they're in the under $10 bargain bins. And I only buy the sports titles needed when they've dropped down to $2.99 or under.

OH BTW, for the few games I believe will be given GOTY by different sites and/or publications, then I'll wait out those games till their GOTY version releases. That way I get all DLC(that I would have never bought) included on the cheap(like I did recently did with LBP & Fallout 3).

And for the old games on different consoles, I usually work deals out with the various Mom & Pop retro games stores, and they give me a decent discount on my total if I buy 10-20 games or more at a time(which is almost all of the time).

For the most deserving developers I like to try and pick up their games on day one.

My day one's for 2011 will probably be Killzone 3, inFamous 2, Uncharted 3, The Last Guardian, Batman Arkhem City, LIttleBigPlanet 2 and ICO/SotC Collection. The rest I can wait.

Maybe I'll pick up FFvXIII(if the game isn't compromised by going multiplat), Rage and L.A. Noire too.

Oooh, and Ni No Kuni is a definite day one if it comes out 2011.

Oh, Forgot to add to my last post....

That I also do a lot of those "Buy 2, get 1 free" deals for those games I want that haven't dropped in price even 6+ months later on.

Jawk, that is actually a good list... you laser focused onto the best ones I think. I may look at going with your list... Its just a question of resources and to purchase things over time... I actually want to savour this generation and cherry pick games I have missed as I go along... enjoy them like a fine wine over time...

Just think of how GT5 will develop and how long it will take to complete properly... I multi year play through. But some of the Sony classic exclusives will also be very affordable next year at half the usual price...

2011 will now be known as the empty wallet year! I'll be buying way to many amazing games for money to stay put in it.

Resistance 3-check
UC 3-double double check
LBP 2-check check
Last Guardian-Oh hell ya check
Killzone 3-Woohoo check

and the list continues to grow :)
