CNN's Top 10 For 2010: Heavy Rain Nabs Top Spot

While nobody in the industry is going to call CNN a top source for hardcore gamers, it's undeniable that a great many people will see their Top 10 list.

Therefore, it's kinda cool that Quantic Dream's masterpiece, Heavy Rain, sits at #1 in the 10 Best Video Games of 2010 lineup. The highly accomplished and singular interactive drama impressed a great many people...especially those with attention spans longer than that of a gnat. It's also interesting to note that Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption - a game we certainly appreciate - came in at #2 and God of War III made an appearance at #8. It isn't a bad list, in truth, as many of the year's best are found there, although you can bet many will find the inclusion of Call of Duty: Black Ops to be your default mainstream selection that doesn't necessarily take reviews and analysis into account. Also, one other thing: FIFA Soccer 11 is #7 and although that may seem strange to a lot of you, from what Arnold tells me, it's deserving of that slot. For consumers who aren't too checked out on the best of the best, it's a fair assembly of quality.

We think Gran Turismo 5 should be on there but most simply aren't qualified to judge that game in the first place, and there's not enough love going 'round for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 or Vanquish, but that's okay. Our awards are coming soon...

That seems like a pretty solid list they have. I think this list would be a fairly decent representation of the best to the non-gaming world that watches CNN.
The only issue I have is the complete lack of a certain racing game and the inclusion of a very popular cash cow.

Heavy Rain at the top of that list is a worthy number 1.

I have been playing Red Dead Redemption a lot lately, trying to get through it... the more I play it the more I am enjoying it... It really does ooze quality in every aspect of its digital self. It deserves a high reading...

GoWIII I would have expected to be higher on the list, that position is odd considering its production values and what they managed to squeeze out of the PS3...

Q!

Although my personal list would be quite different, it's hard for me to complain about any list that places 'Heavy Rain' in the top spot. A position it is wholly deserving of, in my opinion.

I'm glad that CNN got someone who really knows games to make this list. It seems like a solid list. All great games on there.

I wouldn't say I'm qualified to review gran turismo but I certainly appreciate the quality.
I was surprised at how my parents (who hate games) were having great fun racing with their own cars and although I normally skip sims and prefer racers like motorstorm I will definitely purchase GT5
And I'm glad a ps3 exclusive got the top spot

Good news for all around the board for a couple of reasons.

One, Heavy Rain is a new genre defining experience, and two, Heavy Rain is a PS3 exclusive.

I agree with you Ben as well. GOW3 deserves to be higher then #8.

I finally got ans finished heavy rain and it is quite tge experience. Ive never gotten that experience from a game before. Its genre defining and i hope it paves the way for more similiar titles cus that was epic. Needless to say i cant wait fr quantic dreams next project.

And GOW 3 should be number 2 or 3. Thats tough cus quality wise its better than RDR but overall they both are amazing thats tough.

Glad to see Heavy Rain getting some deserved attention despite not being an FPS. I fear GT5 will go under appreciated and Vanquish may have it's flaws but it is for top 10 material.

On topic: I agree with this post. Heavy Rain has been the most surprisingly entertaining game for me so far this gen. No other game so far has pulled me in with a story as engaging as that one.

Off topic: It official that PC players have won the battle to be the first to unlock the fifth map in Battlefield Bad Company 2: Vietnam. For those that didn't know, each platform was competing against each other to see who would be the first to do it. The first platform to do 69 million team actions won. PC gamers unlocked it with more than double the console totals combined.

...that's because PC gamers only have one or two genres to play.

Now...

I wonder how many people on the PC side of things actually paid for their copy of Battlefield?

And could it be that teamwork is more prevalent in PC shooters. In the experiences I've had in the past with console online shooters, it seems that it's more about the man and not the team. MAG may be different though.

Doesn't really answer my question. To be honest, something tells me that the PC has more players on it's version of Battlefield due to COD's impact on the consoles.

No different than console gaming. You have to upgrade your console to the new one every few years also to keep up with the new technology. Same goes with any technology no matter what it is. You want the better stuff. Better upgrade. My current PC is 4 years old and the only upgrade I've put in is a video card and a power supply since the last one burned out. It can still play the newest games that are out there without a hitch. Buy a good one to start with and your upgrade costs are drastically cut. But this argument is pointless. We're all free to play on whatever platforms we desire. I choose to play on all of them so I can get the best of everything. Except Xbox. I'll never stoop down to that level.

It's just like the mainstream media to pretend to know what they're talking about when it comes to games. Unless of course they're listed in no particular order.

Nice to see a PS3 exclusive get some recognition from the mainstream, casual crowd.

Arnold is right. FIFA 11 is the pinnacle of video game Soccer. A fantastic game in its own right, but I imagine it'll only appeal to those interested in the subject.

Wow... I wasn't expecting that. But then, CNN is a widespread news source, rather than games-centric, and must be harder for M$ to pay off. Seeing Heavy Rain recognised like this makes me feel a little gooey inside.
Peace.

Also, can't fault them for the rest of the list. All high quality, and acclaimed games.

Agree with the majority that this is quite a good list. Probably a reflection on how (most) gamers have matured into “an experience” as opposed to simply finding a gun and shooting everything you see on screen.
I’m a bit surprised to be honest that FIFA 11 was the one sports title that got onto the list. I think NBA 2K11 with the re-introduction of Michael Jordan is a much better play … but I guess that’s just my own personal opinion? … as unimportant as it is.
As for Gran Turismo 5? … I love the game but think it became its own worst enemy with the constant delays!
Great to see also that Rockstar can still make quality games without “Grand Theft” in the title! … very much looking forward to The Agent.

I kinda hope Heavy Rain nabs the top spot here at PSXE too. It's just a whole level above everything else. Cage and crew should be proud, they've made a lifetime fan out of me. GOWIII was fun, RDR is safe, but Heavy Rain was fresh and created a feeling I've never had in a game before.

In the poll Heavy Rain and GOW3 were close for a while but RDR surged and Heavy Rain dropped toward it's level, leaving GOW3 in first by about 10 percent ahead of Heavy Rain in second and RDR a percent or two behind.

better than something id expect from something quite mainstream like CNN.
but very good to see a deserving title at top of the list. and im unaware of CNNs reputation as how maintstream they are when it comes to gaming. but with black ops being 6 on the list, ill take it as not too bad.

At least CNN made mention of games like GT5 in their editorial. Good list, especially with Heavy Rain taking top spot. More awareness more support and more fans to the PS3!
