Play.com Reporting Incredible PS3 Pre-Orders
More good news for the Sony camp regarding pre-order figures for the European PlayStation 3 launch. Earlier in the week we brought you some words from Woolworths' chief of games on how remarkable the demand for the PS3 is. Well, online retailer Play.com is expressing those very same sentiments. GamesIndustry.Biz spoke to Gian Luzio, who is the Head of Games for Play.com, and he said that the PS3 was "the most pre-ordered console yet" for the retailer.
Play.com estimates that they've received six-times the amount of PS3 pre-orders, as opposed to Xbox 360 pre-orders, and 15 times over the Nintendo Wii. For a console that's considerably more expensive than both, that's a pretty staggering number. It goes to show the immense loyalty that Europeans have for Sony...a little mind-boggling on how loyal they seem to be, really.
Play.com is offering a really nice PS3 bundle that will come packed with: MotorStorm, Resistance, and Genji, all for GBP 524.99. While Play couldn't satisfy day-one delivery of every pre-order taken for the X360 or Wii, they're promising different for the PS3. "We have taken the necessary steps to ensure that customers will only be able to pre-order the system up until Play's allocation has been reached." Luzio also said that he was satisfied with Sony's handling of the supply situation.
Furthermore, Luzio believes that Blu-Ray will also fuel sales of the console, and in turn help Play.com's business. He cites recently released figures from SoundScan showing that Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD by 2:1 in one case, [and then nearly 3:1 in another]. Technology, Luzio believes, is what will help the PS3 sell: "In addition to the games and movie growth we expect to see a large increase in the sales of 1080p TVs to make full use of the PS3's superior resolution."
