Final Fantasy XIII: Seasons Spotted

Update: NowGamer has updated the story, and it turns out Square-Enix claims the release schedule information was "inaccurate." However, they didn't clarify what "inaccurate" means...does that mean "Seasons" doesn't exist, or does it mean it's an incorrect name for another title...?

Original Story:

Square-Enix may have a very large - and very mysterious - project in the works, but figuring it out is like trying to connect the dots...and some of the dots are invisible.

Just to recap: last week, sources spotted a European trademark listing for Final Fantasy Type-O. Back in October, Square-Enix spoke a bit about the missing content in Final Fantasy XIII and hinted at the possibility of a FFXIII sequel. Lastly, Tetsuya Nomura sent around an e-mail to Square-Enix Ultimate members, saying "she must not be forgotten," referencing FFXIII's protagonist, Lightning. Now, the name Final Fantasy XIII: Seasons has popped up on the UK release schedule for 2011. Supposedly, it's due out some time this year along with the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and the new Dissidia for the PSP. The other PSP title in development, Final Fantasy XIII Agito is not on the list, so Seasons might just be the official retail title for the project. But if it isn't...we have questions. A lot of questions. They couldn't possibly produce FFXIII-2 this quickly, could they?

Well, not unless they were planning on it all along, which seems highly unlikely. It's just another guessing game until S-E confirms something.

I actually think they could do a game like that really good with Lightning. SHe could summon Eidolens in real-time while kicking butt with her gun-blade etc. If handled right, It'd be cool. I'd play it.

It could be 'Final Fantasy XIII-2' for the PSP. They managed to pop out 'Final Fantasy Dissidia 2' and a port of 'Final Fantasy IV' and its sequel with updated 2D sprites and new cutscenes so I think they'll announce this too. Let's hope this one is actually enjoyable unlike XIII.

@Underdog15 - I supposed it's personal preferences. Personally, I hated Final Fantasy XIII. I thought it was one of the worst games I've ever played. I love Final Fantasy I - XII (well, some of them I only like) and plenty of spin-offs but this one was just awful.

But maybe they'll fix everything I hated in the first one with the sequel (if it is a sequel). Sadly, I'm not holding my breath.

Nope. Not being melo-dramatic at all. I honestly think it's one of the worst games I've ever played. The story was incoherent, the characters were annoying and uninteresting, the gameplay was dul as hell (walk down corridor, fight, cutscene, rinse and repeat), the battle system was broken, the music was generic and stale, the dialogue is excruciatingly horrible, etc. The ONLY thing I liked was the graphics. Everything else was awful. Definitely on my top 10 worst games ever played.

I really hope Versus XIII will fix this massive disappointment. Since that moronic director of XIII is not attached in any way and Nomura has a good record, I think Versus XIII will be awesome.

I honestly meant what I said. It's always nicer when people respond by backing up their thoughts as opposed to resorting to insults or snide remarks or responding with ultimatums.

A lot of those are opinions, but the fact you hit on is that it IS just corridor, fight, corrido, fight, corridor, cutscene... That much bothered me.

I take issue with your opinion on the music though, I thought it was great, had it stuck in my head a lot. And the Jazz for Sahz was sweet.

If this is another piece of software they are milking this so hard. Ill be honest i passed on ff13 and although some say its good, its been obvious it wasnt final fantasy good. With that said SE needs to do something big for the fans and franchise and stop milking this!

This isn't going to be like the FF VII third person game they did with Vincent is it? I think it was called Dirge of Cerberus.

Although I think at this point, Anything with a FF badge on it is a bargain bin purchase unless S-E smartens up.

I actually did not mind the gameplay of DoC, but the story was just dreadful. The best bit about DoC was expolring the Highwind in new-age graphics.

Well, the highwind was actually unusable after meteorfall due to it having been mako-powered. The new ship in DoC was the Sierra (or Shera, don't remember). I don't remember if it is supposed to be steam powered, coal powered, or if it was built post-oil refining.

The "On the Way to a Smile" stories describe a bit about what Cid and Shera did (with a little help from Barret eventually) to build the Shera. I remember reading about them finding oil, but struggling to harness and refine it into power. They could work a steam engine, but they couldn't generate enough power for the airship at the time.

Anyways, whatever power they used, the Sierra (or Shera, I can't remember... Cid built a couple ships after meteorfall. His staff was Rockettown folks) was the ship we explore in DoC.

(Sorry, I didn't mean to upstage anyone. I'm just a bit of an FF nerd.)

EDIT: I just remembered Barret took a temporary job protecting a convoy that was powered by coal. It was land transit, and I remember reading that the workers were working their butts off hardcore for minimal speed. So I doubt the airship was coal powered.

There's a lot of reference to people being unused to such work due to living such carefree lives due to mako energy. Now that people stopped using it, there's lots of interesting commentary on the pursuit of happiness and where it got their society in the end.

Ah right cool, i have not played it since the release, But thinking of it now the one in DoC and AC did look different to the Highwind. Nevertheless still the best bit in the game.

Oh yeah, for sure. Everything else was cramped. And I guess the corridors were a bit cramped too, but that section made you feel really freed! The mood certainly lifted!

Why not?

I'm not familiar with whatever Wii iterations came out, but FFXIII was great. I mean, you can argue it's no good for an FF, but it's still worth a play. PSP FF's have been a blast from the improved FFT, to Crisis Core, to Dissidia.

I mean, it's been a while since we've had anything truly awe-inspiring on a console, but buying an FF still isn't a bad investment. It just isn't as valuable as they have been in the past, depending on your point of view.

I do sympathize with you, though. I wish it was a 9+ title.

Quite the mind f-BOGGLEr, I hope it's not a sequel, becuase with a name like that i'm not convinced so far. in all honesty i find the whole'Fabula Nova Crystallis' series link daft. Just Call Versus FFXV or is it to much or trial game to be considered a proper title?

I don't think it'll be the renamed version of Agito, because that would go against the grain with the naming of FFVersusXIII. A wee bit backwards it would be.

A sequel to FFXIII is a distinct possibility, but what if it is a PS3 exclusive version, with some of the cut content put back into the game to completely fill up the disc, and a more traditional FF battle system to go with it? A rather awesome re-release don't ya think?

It better not be a title for DLC, one thing i have to give FFXIII credit for is that it has not attempted to cash-in on the DLC unlike pretty much every other game series nowadays.

Seasons will be DLC that gives us an in depth look at Lightning, and Type 0 will be a portable title for 3DS.

I'm glad they are saying Versus will be out this year but it's difficult to believe. It should all come into focus at the SE event on January 18th and then we can all go back to being disappointed :)

Hey, I have nothing to lose, so I'll wait until I can make any decisions. I hope it'll be something to look forward to, but I'm not holding my breath. At this point, SE has lost an longtime fan (of the series). Until they can produce a competent IP that'll deliver RPG for the main course, I'm really not paying attention.

hopefully they changed there mind and decided to release it.
