Silent Hill: Downpour Details Begin To Rain Down
Next month's Game Informer will feature a ton of big games, including the new Silent Hill.
And based on recent scans taken from the magazine, Hell Descent has compiled a list of baseline details for all the survival/horror aficionados. Remember, this is in development at newcomer Vatra studios but while they want to implement their own style, they also want to stick to the classic formula. It seems player choice/freedom will be prominent, as "obvious and subtle gameplay choices affect the story," and as you might've guessed from the title - Silent Hill: Downpour - water plays an integral role in the adventure. Here are a few more elements taken from the scans:
- The ability to look over your shoulder and knock down objects to slow enemies returns from Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
- Puzzle difficulty returns
- No weapon inventory
- Combat is similar to the classic titles, but with an Origins-like limited weapon durability
- Damage is indicated by bloody clothes
- Boss battles contain Quick-Time-Events
- Weapon specific paths return from Silent Hill: Homecoming
- The map is very large
- About 10 hour campaign
- Multiple side-quests
We're excited to see how this one turns out, primarily because we're long overdue for a top-quality Silent Hill console iteration. We're also hoping to hear about a release date, and let's not forget that Dead Space has sort of given the genre a big kick in the ass this generation. Resident Evil isn't the only competition out there, anymore...

Weapon paths is like the only cool thing Homecoming did.
Looking good, I actually have faith in Downpour. The foggy atmosphere looks great, very Silent Hill 1-ish.

And I hope they come with the fright. DS had its moments, and I loved the psychological angle it took. I kind of wish that they had found a way to draw the player more into Isaac's frame of mind, but just having it as it was with the mind**** affecting the character, and giving the player jump-scares was alright. This should turn out to be a good blend between the two.
Peace.

In no way am i expecting this to come close to matching the series pinnacle point in SH2 or my personal fave Silent Hill, SH3. Hell, i don't think any fan is. I just hope it can recapture that classic SH essence that has been absent in recent SH titles. The departure of hospitals & schools could very well mean no more filthy nurses to clobber, which will certainly feel odd for an SH game. But it will pass.
& although i can't see any SH lead character matching Heather of James Sunderland i do still hope they make the new fellow someone you will actually feel sympathy for.
It would make my day if Pyramid Head made an appearance, not just some quick hello-goodbye bs, i want this tripod headed butcher back completely. It won't happen but i can dream. I would also love to see Akira Yamaoka composing the soundtrack, again wishful thinking but a man can ponder.
Anyway, enough wishes. Here's hoping this entry is a step back in the right direction for the series. The casket for this series is still (unbelievably) open, but if this entry fails i can see the coffin being nailed for good.
Diseased fingers crossed that this succeeds. I am hesitant but quietly confident.

So to see PH again, we'd need to bring James back!

Still, i like my SH games acting scared vulnerable characters, not armed-to-the-teeth soldiers. There is no sense of fear in that approach if you ask me.

did not really scare me, but always had me uncomfortable expecting something to leap at me.
i hope they do remove the armored tanked up feel though, that completley spoils the horror genre!
tis why i was so disappointed in dead space 2.
the whole point of a horror game is to make the player feel like a small fish in a big pond, make them see a enemy and say HOLY SH*T HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO KILL THAT!
or just see it, than RUN!
like how RE made you feel when you saw the executioner, or the chainsaw guy.
if your character is a souped up armory, than that completley destroys the feel because your going to have no problems killing the chainsaw guy.
cough RE5.
i guess though im going to have to get use to this new "horror style" because it looks like were not going back to the good old small fish in big pond ways.
:(

I thought horror is suppose to make the player feel weak and helpless.
Like No Name said, it's suppose to make gamers go "How the heck do I kill that?" or "Holy crap, I can't run into that guy here"
Not make them go "Whoa a huge guy with axe, I'll load him up with my shotgun!!"

Its like letting hyandai make Lamborghini's, they'll never be able to get even close.
I mean the graphics in SH3 are better than some PS3 games the facial animation is amazing it even looks better than Homecoming and thats what SH is all about to make its world feel alot scarier.
SH is all about getting up close and personal with all the characters and having realistic facial animation makes it alot more believable.
From what I can see Downpore looks like it has horrible graphics.
As long as someone outside of Japan is making SH it will never be the same!!

It IS still Silent Hill, just with a sh!t haircut. But by all means give it a go considering you tackled the other games. But don't expect anything as epic as SH, SH2 or SH3. There ain't any of that in Homecoming, friend.

It's an absolute atrocity....None of them, again, understood the essence of the Hill.
It'll never be the same again and it sums up this generation well, it's more motivated by greed then it is innovation etc, etc.

I can not imagine that absolute genius director of SH 1 and 2 who explained his art with such passion on that fantastic making of DVD that came with SH 2 upon release, and how he feels about others butchering it now.
The worst part is that Konami not only took the Hill away from them (as they refused to milk it), but disbanded Team Silent, one of the most talented teams in gaming along with Team Ico. They only had the chance to make one other game outside of the genre busting SH series and that was the way ahead of it's time, blueprint for many games to come and again genre busting Shadow Of Memories/Destiny.
Imagine what Team Silent could of done had they been allowed freedom and not men in suits forcing them to change a new creation (The Room) into yet another Silent Hill that they didn't want to do.

That making of feature with SH2 is one of the best i've seen. Theres actually a similar one to SH3 online which is worth finding.
I've been looking online compairing Homecomings graphics to SH3 and SH3 is actually superior! I hope they get it together, i rarely complain about graphics, but to have a game in the same series made previously graphic superior is pretty bad. The thing is the first screenshots of Homecoming looked graphically impressive, but they were eventually downgraded, clearly seen on the protagonist, does anyone know the reason for this

Yeah, since 2005. They didn't want to make anymore Silent Hill games after 3 and wanted to work on new lP's which only happened once.
Silent Hill 4: The Room was their 2nd attempt at a new lP, but Konami forced them to make it another Silent Hill, that's why the game felt uneven. Team Silent were replaced not long after with the rights to Silent Hill being passed on to western studios.

Yup, you can just tell by the well written plot and bizare atmosphere of the game. Shadow Of Memories is one of my fave games of all time and gave me feelings i haven't felt anywhere else in gaming. You're right about the graphics on SH3 too, they always use to push the limits to achieve their vision. This is why i'm so pissed at the fact they are no more as a team.
A few members of Team Silent now work for Sony at Japan Studio and have established a new team called Team Siren and have made the Siren games. They're missing a lot of ingredients that made Team Silent games timeless, perhaps due to the rest of the team being MIA, but it still says something that Siren is the last of it's kind and was a new take on survival horror, unachieved elsewhere without going into different genres.
Ah well. What can ya do.

Scince a brand new developer is working on it I can't hold Homecoming as a reason to not look forward to this. I hope Vatra studios can pull this off.
* Puzzle difficulty returns - Thank god!
* Combat is similar to the classic titles, but with an Origins-like limited weapon durability - It seems they know what Double Helix messed up on.
* Weapon specific paths return from Silent Hill: Homecoming - Only thing that was nice about Homecoming.
* The map is very large - Always good to hear.
* About 10 hour campaign - That's pretty long for a Silent Hill game, Hopefully it doesn't overstay it's welcome.
