Fillion "Excited" To See Wahlberg As Nathan Drake

More than a few sources are reporting that Mark Wahlberg is indeed confirmed to play Nathan Drake in the upcoming film adaptation of Naughty Dog's award-winning Uncharted series.

It was supposedly confirmed by the L.A. Times last year but then, director David O. Russell denied the report. So we were all a little confused for a while. But sources are once again announcing Wahlberg as the leading man for the upcoming film, and most industry insiders consider it a done deal. That includes Nathan Fillion, the actor many Uncharted fans had hoped would land the role. Obviously, Russell (who works with Wahlberg a lot) wanted a big-name star for Drake and perhaps Fillion didn't qualify, but the "Firefly" and "Serenity" actor isn't bitter. In fact, he supports the choice; check out his latest Twitter update:

"Just watched The Other Guys, and honestly excited to see Wahlberg in Drake's Fortune. He's got mad skills."

You have to respect that. And although we insist Fillion is the perfect fit - that guy is Nathan Drake - we'll be interested to see how Wahlberg handles the role. And it's nice to see professionals acting like professionals, at the very least. While we're at it, we'd like to add that "Firefly" never got enough of a chance; that was a great series, and one that suffered from crappy time slots. "Serenity" was great, too.

While I like Wahlberg, I think Fillion's acting (opinion based on watching castle) fits Nathan Drake perfectly.

Thats quite gracious of him, and Wahlberg does have skills, even with comedy, but no I can't see him EVER pulling off Drake's manner of behaving and joking and timing. That characteristic brow furrow Wahlberg uses with every one liner will just come off weak.

Hey World, what character is that in your avatar pic? It's a good pic. Kinda looks like a sci fi Parasite Eve but with a Final Fantasy twist.

It's just Lightning, but the background lighting makes her hair look blond and most of it is behind her so she looks kinda like Aya Brea. Maybe I'll swap it out for a similar one where you can tell easier.

World, This article right here is why I don't want Wahlberg doing any more video game movies. He won't even be aware of drakes manner of behaving, joking, or timing. He won't play Uncharted at all, everything he knows about drake will come from a script.

I couldn't agree more, World.

I like Marky-Mark, but just feel that Nathan Fillion is a better fit for the role.

That said, because it's Wahlberg starring in the film, I have far less of a desire to want to even see the movie.

Disappointed. Very disappointed.

Not that Wahlburg is bad or anything, I actually really like him and his films. It's just Fillion was perfect, he was what the fans wanted, and it's not always actors who sell a movie, clever advertising and constant advertising along with excellent review scores and word of mouth can sell a movie. Look at The King's Speech, every session sold out for over 2 weeks straight and it's hardly been advertised. Popularity spread by word of mouth and review scores saying it's a brilliant film.

I reckon placing Fillion in the role would have helped the film do well, simply through great acting really engaging the audience. I just hope Wahlburg can play the character as flawlessly as Fillion may have.

And I could shake Fillion's hand right now, after that last Tweet. He's taking it really well considering he really wnted the role and was trying to draw support for it. Remember his "Rise ye Castillions and Brown Coats" quote? I'm sure there's some disappointment in there, but Fillion is hiding it very well.

That's what bugs me. Often times a movie is destroyed by attaching big names to it. Nevermind the ability of Mark, certain films just shouldn't hinge on someone else's career and fans.

Look at Jurassic Park, they used a few actors that were great but not huge star power and that's what made it work. Harrison Ford as Ian Malcom and Bruce Willis as Dr. Grant would have messed the spotlight up hardcore.

LOL!!!

Love the Jurassic Park reference! Very true.

Well, look at District 9. That had no famous actors in it at all!!! And it's still one of my favourite films!

I think the director and producer of the Uncharted film are going for a big blockbuster Hollywood flick, one that makes money off star power and places talent second.

I often think about this, and I reckon creating a side by side screen audition of Wahlburg and Fillion playing Drake would be a great idea!

I don't doubt Wahlburg's acting talent, but when there's an actor who literally personifies Drake perfectly, the producers have to at least acknowledge it. I think what annoys us fans the most is that Fillion is being brushed off so easily, not even being given a chance. If he was at least acknowledged, given an audition, AND THEN Wahlburg was offered the part cos of his skill and star power combined, then I would understand.

Agreed. Lost opportunity.

As I said above, a screen audition for both actors couldn't of hurt. Might allow the producers and director to see what the film could be like with both, but it seems star power trumps all.

Wahlberg should sit on his millions, turn this down and say "I'm not doing this unless the fans overwhelmingly want me to. I refuse to be the guy who wrecks a beloved game series."

I would fly over to L.A. tomorrow and give Wahlburg a hug if did something like that. :D

Not sure if he acts like Nathan, but he sure doesn't look like Drake. I like Walberg. I never knew he was a rapper until someone told me a few years back. I just thought he was a very good actor. I'm glad he's playing Drake, but he also doesn't look like Drake. From some of his previous roles, the man looks like he can play one hell of a Drake.

Blame FOX. They ruined so many great opportunities back in 2002 - 2006. Firefly and Arrested Development were great shows that were unfairly terminated to make way for reality programs and trashy mindless crud.

... and the football as well. Live games kept messing with the timing schedules. Such a shame.

And thank God they did.

The Uncharted movie is gonna suck so badly, don't matter who is gonna play who. Hollywood will destroy Drake and burn him to the ground. Then there will be a point in the movie where you will think "This can't possible go any lower" then that is the point where they will sh*t on his remains.

RIP Uncharted.

I must agree with some of you out there.

Those who say that the Uncharted film shouldn't be happening are quite right. The video games are entertaining enough, and the content shouldn't be transferred to another medium unless Naughty Dog or Nolan North are at the helm.

If people are missing out on a great story simply because it's on a different medium, then they should pick up that medium and check it out.

First it was books, then comics, then movies, now video games. Video games can do so much more than tv and film. Inception was a nice breath of fresh air, a completely original concept made FOR film.

Uncharted was made to be an excellent video game. Unless the film is over 2 and a half hours long, the director and producers can't possibly capture the excellence of the video game.

Or better yet, don't call it Uncharted, make it your own creation and simply say in interviews that Uncharted and Indiana Jones were an inspiration towards this film. Mark Wahlburg can play Dominic Polo, great great great grandson of Marco Polo. His love interest is Helen Fuller, journalist and extreme sports enthusiast.

Sadly, Hollywood can't come up with their own ideas so they just steal others, names, personalities and all, and completely destroy the excellence of the orginal content by tying itself to it.

I'll try to keep my hopes up, until I hear that those 'details' that were leaked last year is indeed the direction in which they plan to take the film... Then I shall despair.

Saying that, Firefly really is the best example to check out. For those who don't know, just check out this video and see for yourself if you think Fillion suits Drake's character.

Keep an eye out for the 1:26 mark and you'll see a perfect Nathan Drake performance.

Well, regardless of the casting I'm keeping my expectations low. That way if the movie turns out half way decent, I won't be disappointed.

Wahlberg is a fine actor with a lot of experience and I'm sure with the right direction and preparation he can pull off the role. But there's no doubt in my mind that Fillion is better suited for it. He wouldn't even have to 'act' so much as just play the role, this is exactly the kind of character he does best.

Oh well, wait and see. But after Max Payne... lets not get our hopes up again.

This movie will fail! It will make money because it is Uncharted. But the acting and casting will make it a soulless journey. I compare this missed opportunity to Alec Baldwin playing Jack Ryan in The Hunt for Red October and then Harrison Ford being cast for Patriot Games. Jack Ryan is Alec Baldwin and he played the character perfectly. I am a huge Harrison Ford fan but he failed in that movie. The continuity was missing. Wahlberg IS NOT Nathan Drake, period. Firefly did not have good ratings, not even by Fox's standards at the time.

Forcing Joss to cobble together an episode over the weekend instead of showing the unbelieveably awesome pilot as the first episode likely didn't help, though, so Fox can take credit for the poor ratings.

Of course, most shows would kill for those numbers now, but ratings have declined greatly in the intervening years.
