Sledgehammer Working On "Next Call Of Duty Game"

For a while, we've known multiple Call of Duty titles have been in development, and one rumor pegged Sledgehammer Games as one of the developers.

Activision hasn't made anything official just yet but most figure we're getting Modern Warfare 3 from Infinity Ward later this year. However, it now seems clear Sledgehammer is indeed working on a CoD entry of their own: according to a new job listing for Sledgehammer Games, the new studio is definitely cranking on something fresh for the CoD franchise. The job listing is for a Community Manager, and asks if applicants would "like the chance to build and drive the studio community management effort for Sledgehammer and the next Call of Duty game." Well, that's pretty clear. So does this mean we get MW3 and some sort of CoD spin-off or sub-franchise this year? For the record, Sledgehammer was actually created by Activision back in 2009; it's headed up by Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, both of whom worked on the original Dead Space for EA. So while the name may sound new to you, Sledgehammer has seasoned veterans in-house.

It's probably too much to hope that whatever they're working on will be a significant departure from the series - you know, something different - but even so, we'll be interested to hear the official announcement.

If it isn't anything different then I'll gladly pass..Have to take the wait and see approach..Yet even then if it comes out this year, I'll be too busy trying to juggle Killzone 3, Resistance 3, Uncharted 3, and InFamous 2 as far as shooters are concerned. Not to mention the time that will still be spent playing MK...so many games so little time...

Are you serious? It's a fantastic series. All you haters don't make any sense. I have played all CoD games and enjoyed every one. They all offer close quarter MP that allows leveling and configuration. The human vs human combat is exciting and very skill oriented. You want vehicles then there is BFBC2. The configurations allow you to augment your character with different game changing skills. There are also perks that give you bonuses. Why all the hate, seriously. Who cares if it's released every year as long as it's fun. I have been playing Black Ops for 2 months now and prestiged once. Sounds like a game that was worth my money. The SP is very good as well. A company comes out with an outstanding product and makes barge loads of money so people just start hating. Do you have Blizzard too for creating Diablo, StarCraft and WoW? I honestly don't understand any of you.

That makes sense, if that is the case. I am not saying everyone needs to like CoD. I am just saying that there are a ton of people that love it and for me it's been a highlight of my year in gaming. Best part is that I have actually improved so that I could actually prestige this time for the first time. I didn't in MW2. Anyway, hope they keep raising the bar.

I get that its a good game, but there are many good games out there that don't get a fraction of the publicity, hype, sales, ect. that any of the CoD's have gotten this gen.

The only thing I can compare it to is the movie Titanic, and all the hoopla over it when it came out in theaters. Sure, it was a good movie, but I don't think it deserved the sales and praise it got.

I agree with Guernica and toss Avatar into the mix. Dances with Wolves where the Indians are blue people = overrated.

If CoD didn't have that name attached to it the scores would tank and the sales would be the same as any shooter. It's just annoying that a good game is touted as the greatest game when there is so much better quality stuff out there more deserving.

It's a good series, but its hype and popularity overshadows other greats, which is why most people here don't like it. Also, it keeps on doing what it does and +1 for each succeeding iteration, not +10 like other sequels.

I play CoD:BO on free time I have in between.

I play GT5 and MAG on planned sessions.

It's great on its own merit, but there are also other good games out there.

The thing with CoD is that..well..they haven't provided anything new. It's comparable to Madden. Same game with a roster update. CoD is the same game online since CoD MW. They haven't changed anything just give you a new story and change the perks for online play.

It is that reason that I feel a lot of people stay away from it. Also it fails to do what some of the best FPS' out there do. You have Killzone which streams all game modes selected on one map and you play'em all in one sitting.

Take MAG. It encourages you to work as a team to complete the objective. Where as CoD is pretty much Rambo central if you're not in a clan or playing with friends.

I understand why people like CoD, it is a very polished game, but I personally find the content repetitive and the single player campaign a little too short to enjoy. Modern Warfare 2 is one example of CoD being a disappointment. Black Ops certainly improved things tho, so credit is due there.

But what I don't understand is why people keep buying the same game year after year when they know they're just getting the same thing, just with a few shallow differences in appearance and maybe half a dozen new guns?

The gameplay hasn't changed since Modern Warfare, the graphics have only had a mild improvement, only big difference is storyline in single player and different map types and guns to suit the time period the game takes place.

I got CoD 4 on PC and I thought it was brilliant. It really was at the time. Modern Warfare 2 I got on PS3 for split screen multiplayer and Black Ops I got on 360 for online multiplayer with friends. Now I have a CoD game on each medium, I really don't see the need for anymore.

Wish me luck convincing my friends to stick to Black Ops or MW2 though, cos if they update this year, I may well be forced to update as well. I'm actually hoping CoD hype wears off so I don't have to keep buying the damn thing every year just to play with friends.

A contrary thought.... Activision would be foolish to disrupt the recipe that has brought them back to back (MW2 & Black Ops)unparalleled blockbuster hits. There may be 30 or 40 people on this site who say the COD games are more of the same, garbage, poor quality etc. However, based on the games record sales and warm reception from the general public its pretty much a no brainer that the franchise is special.

To make it simple in an analogy, 5,000 people are sour on it and 5,000,000 are sweet on it. Who you gonna go with? At this point it would be foolish to bet against Antivision oops I meant Activision and the COD franchise. Give em their props and move on.

You actually couldn't be more wrong about the "haters" on this site and especially about cod, I for one crave innovation the very thing that franchise lacks in spades. There is nothing golden about the franchise, they found the perfect game to tap into the casual gamer market. I have quite a few people on my friends list that only play madden and cod, they are what I call the typical "bro" gamer. You may enjoy the simplistic mundane average shooter very year but we or I don't.

The way how Activision advertise CoD, people won't get tired of it anytime soon.
There's a reason why for the 2nd year in a row CoD set a new record for sales.
CoD is not the best game but it's a good game nonetheless.
Black Ops gets an 8.8 on PSXE, that's already saying something.

However, it's only a matter of time before the fans get tired of it, but at least a few more years, probably 5 or 6.
And Activision is just gonna speed up the process if they have 4 studios working on CoD then that means 4 CoD in 2 years.

No, Antivision is using 3 separate development houses to make all of their COD's now, so who knows when the next one will release.

(until they can find another baker's dozen teams to give us a COD bi-monthly).

Black Ops was my first Cod game and I reckon' my last, it had a fun campaign and I still enjoy playing multiplayer with my friends, but I just don't have the money to get any multiplats this year.

So, Sledgehammer, Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and possibly Raven Software. All cranking away on CoD. I suppose it gives a chance of raising the bar in terms of gameplay and graphics with such a potentially long dev time. I see them forming some spin-offs though. T-arch and IW will continue to do the main games, while the other two will do spin-offs. Future Warfare, Ghost, Civil War. Who knows?

And whatever happened to this supposedly being an adventure game?

I'm getting peer pressure to buy Black Ops cuz my friend is obsessed with the zombie stuff. I'd get it so we could play if it cost what it was worth, but crap Activision really keeps their prices high don't they?

Here is an approximation of the CoD gamer because we actually had this conversation recently while on the phone:

Him: "What you up to?"
Me: "Gaming, but I'm not getting anywhere cause I can't really concentrate."
Him: "That's why I like CoD, you don't have to think at all, just shoot sh*t."

And that my friends is the CoD gamer. So, his birthday is coming up and I bought him Bad Company 2 :)

I just don't get it...listen I thoroughly enjoyed COD4 and MW2 but BO is just not as smooth or fun to play..this franchise is going to get hurt bigtime if they think they can keep blowing games out like nothing...instead of sucking the money out of everyone they should have taken a game like MW2 and supported it for a long time by releasing new map packs adding functionality etc...like I said I am a fan but at the end of the day there ain't much difference between all three offerings when you are playing online...

MW2 ended it with me, and just got worse when I played it my self.
I loved COD4MW, I don't know what went wrong. They just just realized that they threw out the same game but with a few... improvements(?) and people bought it like crazy, so they just kept throwing out pretty much the same game and for some reason people are still buying it.

All good things come to an end, and this is overdue. I have fond memories of the first couple of games, even fond memories of Activision, but that was then, this is now. I say screw them, their high prices and schemes of conning the public out of more money.
Gamers should treat their warez with the same contempt as they have for their own customers.

Too much action, not enough substance. No character development. Almost all major war periods have been covered except Korea, actually, that was covered briefly in Black Ops.

So really, apart from multiplayer, this franchise has no where to go but down.

I see Modern Warfare 3 selling on name alone, then being traded for $2 as people go back to Black Ops, MW2 or Battlefield 3.

BTW, I loved Bad Company 2. Not technically as polished or sharp, but the gameplay had so much more depth and variety than all the CoD games rolled into 1.

There's talk of it going future, so CoD: Halo, which would vanish off store shelves, or my personal favourite idea CoD: Civil War. Now that would take some making for it to be a great game. Even WW1 would make for a nice change. Slower rate of fire, and slower reload speed would necessitate a greater deal of strategy. Sure, it would take out some of the, oh so fun, perks, but I think just to see something like that would be great.

Seriously doubt that, if people are stupid enough to buy it at it's inflated price and pay for piss poor map pack expansions, why would they suddenly see sense and not be stupid enough to pay for online?

Honestly I don't think the fad will disappear unless another FPS creeps into the market to take its place. I honestly can't agree with people here who don't see the appeal of the COD franchise though. I mean not even based on sale numbers but simply the addictive online portion. It's a fun way to pass the time with buddies. However, I wish the developers would at least try to update certain lacking features the multiplayer so brilliantly parades. One would be host disconnection, another lies in matchmaking, maybe even some iffy kills and that is pretty much my beef with the game.

It's fun! COD BO's single player was actually really good. The story was there and it seemed as if Treyarch put some thought into it. I suggest those who haven't played it give it a chance! It wasn't the longest story but it certainly was entertaining. I do believe they can expand upon certain aspects of the gameplay that have left unchecked for a while but for the most part, it's a great game.

I've realized though what separates a great game from a flawless game is the passion put into making the game. Naughty Dog and the Uncharted franchise is simply amazing because they have talent and they care about the fans and the games they create. Activision seems pretty cold and 'fixed' in terms of their overseeing and expectations of their developers which probably leads to a pretty tense and cold atmosphere. Despite this theory though, I think Treyarch and Infinity Ward are definitely talented studios. They just need to broaden their horizons a bit more.

isent that the MMO that was rumored ages ago?
meh, could not care less about COD until IW come back.
but than half the studio has swapped ships to EA so there pretty much in pieces too.
COD as a brand name is stronger than ever, but as a innovator to this industry its in shambles!
MW2 was ok, probably one of the best shooters i have played this gen.
BO was ok, but i can only see the series going downhill from here.
so, how long will it take before the market gets saturated by it and people get sick of it?
like what has happened with GH.
i give it another year, less if antivision decide to put IW and another studio on making 2 other COD games like rumors are saying.
like a yearly iteration was not enough, now were going to have several!?

activision should stop making more call of duty's and fix the ones they have made. they can do this by making downloadable campaign missions, adding new maps and guns to multiplayer, and fixing all the problems with the game. instead of buying a new game, improve your current one.

I found on this website http://callofdutyghost.com/source-confirms-developers-for-call-of-duty-ghost-modern-warfare-3-30 that a source confirmed Sledgehammer Games were developing Call of Duty Ghost game and Activision would be working on Modern Warfare 3. I am looking more forward to MW3, and hopefully it does come out this year and they can do COD Ghost in 2012.

Number 4's pripyat mission was balls-tighteningly fantastic. But the franchise has really seemed to lose all of it's spark for me lately... More of the same sh*t annually.

When GT gave Uncharted 2 virtually ALL possible awards only to give MW2 GOTY I was bewildered to say the least.
