DC Universe Online An Apparent Hit
It has often been a subject of conversation: will the MMORPG genre fare well on consoles?
Well, thus far, it seems massively multiplayer entertainment will work out just fine on the PlayStation 3. The recently released DC Universe Online, despite boasting the standard pay-to-play formula found with most MMOs, appears to be in high demand. In fact, Sony Online Entertainment has apologized for the lack of supply. SOE President John Smedley made two encouraging Tweets:
"More units of DCUO are otw [on the way] to retail. The game is sold out in a lot of stores. Sorry. More coming asap"
"We are hitting very high usage on our servers and are working on adding capacity. Sorry for any short downtime while we are doing that."
So yeah, it's selling and people are playing; enough people to force SOE to start enhancing the server capacity. Remember, they were hoping for a big response to the game because apparently, the budget was very, very large...as in, $50 million large. Therefore, if they say the title is performing above expectations, it must be doing quite well in the market.
So, are you planning to be part of the MMO crowd on the PS3? Do you have an interest in being a superhero amidst other superheroes?

Even though today the servers have been on and off all day with all the server enhancements, the game is so good I'm happy to wait patiently.
I'm with you, I'd love to see where the game is at in 6 months, let alone a couple years. Color me extremely excited.

However if the baby MMO syndrome doesn't bother you, than by all means get it. Some of the most fun I've had in a while.
Also if you've play previous MMO's before you might not like this as it is somewhat different. But to me it's that difference that makes DCUO all the better.

World,
Judging from the beta, you could easily reach level max (and presumably finish the main story missions for one character) in the free month, so you could play it like a single-player game. Oh, and we're talking at least 30 hours of play and you can finish most missions without other players.

The battles. Once you start using up your skill points to unlock new attacks, depending on what weapon you go with, the combat is basically: Tap square, hold square, hold a few more times, then press triangle for a finisher. Just made that move up but you do a lot of that. Plus a lot of super powers and iconic powers you get to use by holding L2 or R2 to activate a quick-book of abilities, then you press a face button to use one.
Not sure if I can advertise this here, but I'm gonna go for it just in case anyone at all is interested in more info about this game. On my site www.robertchapman.ca I've wrote a bunch of posts on the game if you're interested in reading about the details.

I was sold on the game concept but I will never pay a $15 monthly fee to play something. I can spend that money on better things.

this is one of the biggest games to hit the ps3, i mean its been in freaking development since they announced the system!
o, and not to mention ITS FREAKING DC!!!!!!!!!!!
so you would think they would of been prepared for this?
oh sony, cant you have one smooth launch?
come on, we dont need another GT5 fiasco!!!!!
whoevers running sony at the moment seriously needs to get kicked out, and replaced with someone a little more responsible!
security issues, leaks of almost everything they release, unorganized releases, insufficient resources.
cant get any worse for them!
eh, i said it once, twice, and ill say it again.
they have no one but themselves too blame!
they love shooting themselves in the foot!

They are hardly shooting themselves in the foot, at least not this particular time (referring to the problematic launch of the PS3).
This is just a minor speed bump. They were just erring on the side of caution. And why shouldn't they? Yes it's true that it's DC. But it's also true that the announcement of the monthly fee disappointed a lot of people. There was really no way of knowing for sure how things would go for this game.
Having said that I am very glad that things seem to be going quite well.

Especially how many server cluster instances they should make available at launch is extremely difficult to predict. Cause you definately do *not* want empty clusters at launch, that's a kiss of death.

KZ2,R2,MGS, socom, every single exclusive i have played has been completley f*cked online!
KZ2 had the 5021 errors, kicking me out of every single game i joined for a good 8 months after release!
R2 had so many glitches, it made it seem like a beta!
MGS online lagged like i was still on freaking dial up!
the less said about confrontation the better.

I meant no one around here on this website. And I am well aware that Sony isn't perfect. I have openly acknowledged the mistakes they made with regard to the launch of the PS3 for example.
And I would much rather be consistently positive as opposed to being what amounts to little more than a pathologically rude troll like some people I'm aware of.

but that said, after the first month, thats when it will be come interesting. we are all playing for free right now, so what will happen when we have to pay?!
im still on the fence, but im starting to REALLY like my main character. if they can bring us more goodies, stable servers (more servers for the EU would be nice)..even join us all up across regions and formats, then that's worth my money.
but im glad i am impatient and that I couldnt sit around waiting for ME2 to drop and picked this up, because it is an improvement over the Beta, and if they continue to make this grow then as I said before.. its probably worth anyone's time if they're in to this sort of thing.

I'd like to see how the other PS3 MMOs fare when they release. The Agency, Free Realms, FFXIV and Everquest 3. This could simply be experimentation by gamers that are typically based on consoles. Or uninformed people could be buying into it thinking that it is single player (I know it has MULTIPLAYER ONLY on the box, but... well, this is people that I'm talking about.).
Peace.

But on topic, I'm strangely addicted to this game. I was never into MMO's prior to this, but DCUO just sucked me in.

I really enjoyed the beta for this. I'd buy it in a heartbeat if I had the time to stay commited to it. Unfortunately, I do not. Still, though, it's a lot of fun and if people out there can afford the monthly fees and put in enough time to make it worthy, I highly recommend it.

How "deep" is this game in regards of typical, traditional RPG content? I see there is a skill point system, but does it offer a wide variety of options, or is it pretty much "cookie cutter"? And are there any "trade skills" (abilities to alter/create items)?
My impression from just watching the videos is that this is a rather lightweight, "action only" mmo? Is this wrong, and if so, how?

Also they're not kidding when they say that they're hitting high capacities within their servers.... every time I log in most of the servers are always full. You often get bumped into the login queue lol. Aside from that there has been a lot of down time lately due to high population. I think they need to add two more servers...it's that serious. In fact within like three days or so they added 4 more (two for each platform).
When I went to buy this game I had to check like 5 different stores LITERALLY. All the GS' where sold out and Walmart's customer service was ass so I walked out. I also checked the mall and they too had nothing. It took me going to BB to actually find one. They had only three left.
Just glad I did make the purchase. Can't wait to see how this game evolves within 6 months.
Also if there isn't one already, for those of you on DCUO, we should make a psxe league, that'd be pretty cool. My toon is the same name as my SN here. Happy gaming!
