Mortal Kombat Brutalizes Store Shelves On April 19

It's a reboot and an attempt to "reestablish the brand," and it's less than three months off.

It has been announced that Mortal Kombat will launch for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on April 19. The last entry was the surprisingly Teen-rated Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, which wasn't a bad game at all, but the newest installment is designed specifically to bring back the MK cache. ...that rhymes, you know. Much of the roster will feature our old favorites and remember that the PS3 version will boast the God of War, Kratos. Based on everything we've seen and heard thus far, it really seems as if Mortal Kombat will be fantastic for the long-time hardcore fans. Maybe it'll do for the MK franchise what Street Fighter IV did for Capcom's ailing series. These days, reboots are a big deal, and that's because as the veteran gamers get older and see new experiences around every corner, they sorta miss the games they loved as youngsters.

And when their favorite franchises either disappear or change into something unrecognizable, the developer and publisher suffer some definite backlash. ...hi, Square-Enix.

sounds like its gonna be a good game. i will wait for reviews on it but i do want to play it. i dont know if i would buy it as i dont play many fighting games. none of my friends do either so it would be hard to talk them into it. but maybe if this MK kicks enough ass it might be easier. cant wait to see a kratos fatality

I saw the cover art reveal for both the PS3 and 360 version and a normal guy would go for the PS3 version when the cover on it says "Exclusive content play as Kratos" and also a "3D" logo.

As a true Street Fighter fan who saw how Street Fighter IV literally revived the series and the GENRE I'm happy to see the Mortal Kombat 9 will do the same.

The competition those two series had in the SNES years was legendary. I can't wait to get MK9 and get into the more mature and deadly world of MK.

well 4 didn't really revive street fighter because it was never really dead. I mean I hear lots of people say that every mortal kombat after 3 sucked, yet I have never heard anyone ever say anything bad about a street fighter game. 4 didn't revive street fighter it just gave it a long time coming sequel

It did bring a series back into the realm of 3D properly though, that one 3D Street Fighter was trash.

Strange that SF flourishes as a 2d fighter. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and now 3 (will soon) prevail as 2d fighters. Also strange that MK was in it's prime as a 2D fighter. Just sayin...

i preferred it how deception was.
that had everything, a chess game, tetris, the konquest mode, and the 3 style fighting was the best addition to MK ever!
i would of much preferred a deception 2.
or even a shaolin monks 2, thats by far my most played game ever!
finished it like 50 times!
i was ready to fly to netherealm studios when i found out they had a similar game staring scorpion and sub zero but canned it.
ed, how could you do this to me?????????
hope they decide to do that after this, would be freaking sweet!

As far as fighting games go this year, Arcana Hearts 3 is where it's at. That is some crazy sh!t! Bizarre characters, seizure inducing combos & Japanese weirdness at it's best. I suggest all fans of Blazblue & Guilty Gear get hold of it by all means.

& where the hell is my Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown already SEGA!?

On MK, i've never been too big on it but may give this a look.

On my b-day... Hmm that could be a more than welcome gift! Can't wait for this one. I have yet to purchase a fighting game for my PS3, this will be my first after passing on SF4 and tekken. Being a MK fan the wait will hopefully be worth it.

On another MK note, I really hope that trailer that buzzed around for a while becomes a reality for a new movie reboot as well.

Anybody remember Mortal Friday? And then I think there was a brief delay that turned it into Mortal Tuesday. I stayed home fake sick from school to play MKII on my SNES all day.

Such good times.

"Maybe it'll do for the MK franchise what Street Fighter IV did for Capcom's ailing series."

Street Fighter was never an ailing franchise, but then again I guess you never been to an arcade to gauge the fact that the game still popular and still played alot despite the influx of VF and Tekken machines that proliferate the acade floors. To further add Arcadia Magazine(japanese arcade-centric magazine) still ranks SFIII as being a money maker for Capcom despite till this day.

"These days, reboots are a big deal, and that's because as the veteran gamers get older and see new experiences around every corner, they sorta miss the games they loved as youngsters."

Reboots have nothing to with reconnecing older gamers, but has everything to do with playing it safe and cranking out sequels.

Anyhow the whole rush by developers to reboot a certain frachise just demonstrate that the industry is running out creative ideas which is quite sad.

Uh or a reboot would give gamers the franchises back they once loved. I've been dreaming of a new Twisted Metal game for who knows how long. I dont care they are calling it a reboot because i want it! I have for awhile! Finally they listened. Just the same goes for people screaming they wanted MK to go back to its roots. Sometimes its just the case of the developer listening to the fans.

You can say what you want as to what the motives behind rebooting a franchise is, but Id put money on it that jaffe would tell you otherwise in regards to eat, sleep, play' new TM title.

You actually believe this? Well is Namco disagrees with you and agrees me when explaining why they are rebooting the Ace Combat franchise:

OverBerg, of course fighting games well be "meh". I mean this just how the average console-centeric thinks hence why I find it ridiculous for developers like Namco, SEGA, Capcom, Arc Systems to continue releasing on them consoles.
