Rumor: Metal Gear Solid HD Trilogy Sneaking To PS3

Sure, the old Final Fantasy games would look incredible in high definition, but don't forget about the other awesome franchise: Metal Gear Solid.

HD overhauls are a big deal this generation and it seems Konami is preparing to bring MGS classics from past generations into the high-res limelight. According to "insider whispers" heard by the UK's Official PlayStation Magazine, Snake is "in the facelift queue," and the "first three" MGS titles will be remade in HD. We have no other details at this time - is it physical or digital product? - but the rumor is still quite encouraging. So far, we've only had one MGS in HD, and that was the 2008 Kojima masterpiece, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Wouldn't it be great to have the original title, Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater as HD versions in our libraries? It also might give newcomers to the series another reason to explore the classics, although we wonder if high-definition could make the first MGS appealing to younger gamers. Anything on the original PlayStation might have to be entirely overhauled from the ground up...you know, like that FFVII remake they're working on at Square-Enix.

Anyway, we'll let you know if and when this gets confirmed. We'll also be interested to learn all about Kojima's new mysterious project...

If by "fresh and original" you mean "derivative and regressive," then yes, you're on to something. No offense man, but not only was FF XIII impossibly boring, it was practically a mimic in its fidelity to previously existing JRPG cliches. All the BAD cliches, mind you -- why they didn't choose to seize on the GOOD elements of JRPGs is an ongoing source of conversation around these parts and elsewhere.

It's about friggin' time already!!! I hope they port 'Twin Snakes' though instead of the original. Nothing against the original. It's better than 'Twin Snakes' but it just wouldn't translate well to HD. Gamecube and PS2 games work much better. I would definitely pick up the original on the Playstation Store if they did port 'Twin Snakes'.

Mmmmm, all three MGS games in 1080p, 60fps with anti-aliasing and trophy support (about time one MGS game has trophies). Now Konami needs to get started on a 'Zone of the Enders' collection.

I'm sorry but if towns were actually impossible in HD then everthing else that SE put on screen would be impossible. polygons are polygons. Graphics are graphics. Synching the player's action to a treasure chest reacting and opening is no different then synching a player's character's action to and opening door to a shop...owned by a merchant you can speak to......yes IN A TOWN.

I want. So bad.

I'm kinda hoping that it's a complete package, though. I hope it's MGS1 with all the VR missions, MGS2 Substance, and MGS3 Subsistence (but not the cut down version from the triple pack that came out a handful of years ago). I also hope it has some extra stuff for MGS4, like trophy support and a few other knick knacks.

I think it'd be pretty cool if they didn't change anything about the games, but somehow managed to re-skin them using MGS4's game engine. But it isn't necessary, at least for me. I played all three games before MGS4 came out and was able to lose myself in them just as good as I did with their original releases.

Doing a full blown MGS1 remake in HD wouldn't be too complicated. Let's not forget what happens in chapter 4 of MGS4. I won't spoil it. But half of Konami's work has already been done simply thanks to that. :)

All that's left is to drop in the A.I and model the bosses. Bam. If they do a simple HD remake, I'd prefer they used Twin Snakes assets (visually superior), but the dialogue and voice overs from the original PSOne game.

After playing MGS4 I decided to go back and try playing one of the older ones, I just couldn't get used to the mechanics of the game. When crawling you could only see like 1 foot in front of you unless you went into first person mode, but then you couldn't move forward, so, I just couldn't get into it.

However this is really great news for those of you who can do that, plus it just shines light on a great PS3 exclusive.

Agreed. After playing Splinter Cell, MGS always seemed like really clunky stealth gaming (which is NOT to say that the games weren't great for other reasons).

The only way I'd re-buy these games is if they retrofitted the MGS3: Subsistence controls/camera to all three games. Hell, I bought MGS3 twice already.

Nice news, but not sure I'll need this or not. Honestly, I just played through MGS3 Subsistence about 18 months ago -- used component cables for my trusty ol' PS2 (ultra boxy, original version ;)and even bought a new, silver DualShock2 for the occasion. Looked and played like a dream on my 1080P Bravia XBR4. No doubt an HD version would drop jaws, but I'm still super impressed with the original version of this game, all these years later.

MGS2, meanwhile, is pretty darn lousy. Far and away the weakest game in the series. No need to play through that one again, HD or otherwise.

The original game was groundbreaking, but when's the last time you played it? It's so... small. You can plow through it in a few hours time. I'd be interested to see how they adopt that one for this collection. If they find a way to make it compelling and fresh, then I'd take a serious look at this collection. For now, I'm happy with my original copies of the games.

Hi:

Well, MGS3 - Subsistence doesn't have 16:9 or Progressive Scan. I REALLY want that features (1080p native.. remember is a PS2 Game. Why not?) BUT, having a Remake with an improved Engine (no "Loading times", useless installs, low res textures) with HD (720p or 1080p NATIVE) is a MUST for Me.

Hi:

Metal Gear Solid 3 - Subsistence, a Remake for PS3 or PS4 (Launch Date) could be the MAXIMUM LEVEL experience.
